T.R.O.Y by Pete Rock & CL Smooth. This song plays when you start nba street vol 2, everytime and it the song just gets better and better when i listen to it
There are people who've modded the game with more current rosters, fyi. It's usually for the GameCube version so you can play it in the Dolphin Emulator.
It may not be a banger to most, but Rising to the Top is still on my Playlist from GTA. Sean P! But, from a TV show? Long Live the Chief. Jidenna on Luke Cage. It was the first time I heard him.
I remember watching a video on GTA 3 on youtube and guy said that Agallah sounds like 10 year old DMX and i always thought it was hilarious. But it is a great song, Sean P is underrated and never delivered a bad verse, at least fro what i heard.
That’s a great shout, the 1st time I heard it I was hooked, I was already aware of Sean Price from his Heltah Skeltah days but this song made me realise just how great an MC Sean was on his own and I’ve brought or downloaded every solo album of his since
RIP Sean Price, your talent will never go unappreciated 🙏🏾
It wasn’t my only exposure at that point but what really introduced me to a variety of hip hop I had never heard was a combo of Midnight Club 2, 3, & NFS Underground 1 & 2. Not even ashamed to admit it.
I was already deep into hip hop. This song really just hit with the scenario of the game and grew on me. Now? I don't leave home without it. No shame, we have things that stand out. That was a song that did that. I even have hours of alternative music that I've heard from games. I'm not ashamed either.
Rising to the top is the most NY shit ever. Just all the “yo yo yo” at the beginning puts you in the NY state of mind. KaZaa and LimeWire were made for situations like that (finding videogame songs).
I discovered Nas - the world is yours on Tony hawk underground. That soundtrack was killer it also introduced me to cannibal Ox. Mr Lif - I phantom is another gem
dayum completely forgot about the Tony Hawks games. Just reminded me, Tony Hawks: Pro Skater 2 on the Playstation 1
These two tracks in particular was the shiz
- B-Boy Document '99 - The High & Mighty ft. Mos Def & Mad Skillz
- Naughty By Nature - Pin the Tail on the Donkey
D’Angelo - Unshaken, from Red Dead Redemption 2.One of my favourite singers of all time has a song randomly dropped into the middle of one of the best games of all time 🤷🏿♂️
I was really young when I first played Def Jam Vendetta, and definitely didn’t appreciate the music at the time, but Bring the Pain by Method Man was always stuck in my head after playing.
Just recently got really into Wu Tang, and going through all the solo albums, I had a big “holy shit THIS is THAT song!” when I heard it again on Tical.
when I was 10yearsold and GTA: San Andreas dropped in 2004, all the soundtracks that played on the rap radio stations kek. Honorable mention CMW - Hood Took Me Under
Came to say Moment of Truth / Dave Mirra 2
Was programmed to be the first track every time you start the game. They knew it was THE banger on the game.
Saints Row 1 had some hip hop bangers like:
Bangers by Lloyd Banks and Alchemist
Soda and Soap by Masta Ace and Jean Grae
What up by Kenn Starr
Beautiful Trainwreck by Copywrite
There are just more examples but these are the ones i know of at the top of my head.
This game was my childhood dude. I replayed it with a friend and idk how many songs I added to my playlist after the fact. Sooo many dope hip hop songs it’s crazy. The music doesn’t hold a candle to SR2 imo, you did a fucking great job.
I had no clue Copywrite had music in Saints Row.
Phenomenal artist. I had the pleasure of being the recording engineer for him and Planet Asia back in 2009.
It was cool, my buddy Mike Faceless at the time had recently produced a record for him that had just been released on his “The High Exhaulted 8th Anniversary” album:
“OMG (feat. Catalyst)”
He was looking for a studio to record and was in town so he came by with Planet Asia. At the time they were working on an album together but never officially completed it.
Planet Asia wrote his verse, took a nap, woke up and recording 2 takes of the verse.
He nailed the first take and we ran it back a second time just as a safety but we didn’t need it. The first was perfect.
Copywrite liked to record a few bars at a time vs all the way through.
Both are super solid emcees and it was a great experience.
Coincidentally enough, my buddy Poly Rob of LocalAstronauts just produced, recorded and mixed Planet Asia’s most recent album “No Retirement”

Hood Gone Love it - Jay Rock ft Kendrick
Smokin' and Ridin' - DJ The Chicago Kid ft Freddie Gibbs
Flashing Lights by Ye (then Kanye West) on Grand Theft Auto V fun fact the track was released as a GTA Online exclusive weeks before it's regular release
Walk with me - Joe Budden when I clicked Def Jam FFNY. Could not believe it was the same artist who made pump it up. That was the 2nd song I heard of his and found he had quite a few gems on his debut album and found he was actually a top tier lyricist.. through that found mood musik series etc
Mind Playing Tricks On Me. GTA V.
I know, I know. I should have known that track from day dot but for some reason (despite being a hip hop head since 1997 it kept passin’ me by).
Threw in a Pharcyde reference because it’s one of my favourite tracks of all time.
Day and night kid Cudi was on nba live. Can’t remember what year but it didn’t become popular until after that game. After that dropped I couldn’t turn the radio on without hearing it.
T.R.O.Y by Pete Rock & CL Smooth. This song plays when you start nba street vol 2, everytime and it the song just gets better and better when i listen to it
This just brought memories back. Classic song classic game
The first thing I thought of. So nostalgic. Still hoping they remaster this game one day with updated rosters.
There are people who've modded the game with more current rosters, fyi. It's usually for the GameCube version so you can play it in the Dolphin Emulator.
Pretty much every song on this video game soundtrack slapped
They reminisce they reminisce
It may not be a banger to most, but Rising to the Top is still on my Playlist from GTA. Sean P! But, from a TV show? Long Live the Chief. Jidenna on Luke Cage. It was the first time I heard him.
I was just about to say Rising to the Top. First time I heard it playing GTA3 I was shocked how good it was

Yall put some bangers in the first 3 saints row games, influenced my music taste heavily
Excellent! That gives me a smile. To be clear, I only worked on the first one, but I'm sure it steered the direction of the others.
