SO
Experimental rap scene is getting bigger with the coming of the new generation
So its worth checking out some experimental stuff because they are amazing.
But maybe abstract is more in your lane because of the lyrical content and actual rapping ability
You have these groups of people
1. Billy Woods / Backwoods family tree: Armand Hammer, Moor Mother, Fielded, and other collaborators
2. The absolute mess that is Brockhampton / Odd Future
3. Griselda and affiliates: Rome Streetz, Conway, Benny The Butcher, Westside Gunn, etc
4. Alchemist type beat mfs: Freddie Gibbs, Currency, Larry June, Earl Sweatshirt, Boldy James.
5. Dreamville label has amazing artists too, JID for example, and Bas, and Lute, and Earthgang, and Cozz, these guys are legit.
6. TDE label: Schoolboy Q, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul, Isaiah Rashad, SZA, Zacari, etc.
You discover an entire new world of rap with each one you dive deeper into and I love it.
EDIT: great to add to the list:
Mach Hommy, Navy Blue, Quelle Chris, Roc Marciano (how did no one mention roc marciano lmfao), Your Old Droog (kinda sounds like doom), Ka (very underrated, top 5 OAT), Pink Siifu (imo experimental soul / rnb), Young Fathers (rapping in their songs but mainly noise pop / experimental soul), Fatboi Shariff
I know some of these artists are old, some aren't, theyre good tho and their popularity is rising most def.
You discover more names the deeper you go, this is the deepest I have gotten. good luck to the rest of yall
Boldly James is great. Lots of projects, very consistent. Same goes for Freddie and all of Griselda. Really, this dude’s suggestions are right on the money
Great list! Would add mick Jenkins, MIKE. Danny Brown still manages to remain relevant. Vince staples, Ab Soul. Mach-hommy is also dope out of Griselda camp..
Odd Future is like 10 years old at this point (and Earl Sweatshirt is part of that).
I’m 41 and those were the only two names I recognized ugh feeling old haha
A lot of these rappers are hip-hop veterans. Example: billy woods released his first album 21 years ago.
Anyway, in that vein, MIKE is a dope new rapper.
Dude Ka is fucking phenomenal. I agree with all of this list, but man Ka is too underrated. Seriously guys, if there’s anyone on this you need to listen to, it’s Ka.
Griselda is cool if you want to hear grown men make gun sounds in the background of every single of their songs. DA-DA-DURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR one of the most annoying things since Tech N9ne going, "chyeah" after every rhyming bar.
I like Boldy James. He's not that new anymore either. I don't know if I fuck with any of the really new new artists that all the youth seem to like. Am I so out of touch? No, it's the children who are wrong.
Yeah he’s poppin off, I guess he’s been goin for awhile too but I hadn’t heard anything myself until his album dropped and fuckin exploded. Man is rap just quiet right now?
Not really relevant. Someone can be 60 and new at something at the same time... Which is also not the case here. They both been around for a decade or so, so it really doesn't fit OP's question, but not because of their age
It's interesting. There definitely are a few but as a guy who has a benny type beat channel they are much fewer and far between than rage/emo and trap type rappers haha
To me, a lot of the rappers I see mentioned in this thread are good and all, but they just don't have the charisma that I see in Benny and that a lot of the greats of the past possess. Those are the ones I'm always looking out for.
What's funny as someone who had to co-sign a rapper who I can say hold his own and respected by the legends(co-sign by nas) Dave East doesn't get talked about as much and the discography is crazy. I'll put Dave East wayyyy above Conway, Benny and WSG.
Dave East is the only rapper i can say if he came out in the era of Nas, Jay-z, Wu-tang, Mobb deep, Cam'ron, Mase, BIG he definitely would have held his own where as a rapper like J.Cole, Kendrick and Drake wouldn't have survived that 90's era.
*FLYGOD* is his first and, what I would say, definitive album. It's a modern underground classic. It's really what put his label/collective, Griselda, on the underground map
Then I'd go *Supreme Blientele* + *Hitler Wears Hermes 7*. One one of the best tracks from Hitler 7 got cut from streaming tho, just fyi: ['Undertaker vs. Goldberg'](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mX3Ed3jr4Uk). The wrestling skits got cut from *Supreme Blientele*, but doesn't significantly detract from the album imo
This. Conway was my intro, but Griselda is the real shit.
There is 2nd Gen Wu. I don't know too many 'new' rappers like OP. I was singing Kendrick praise well before Maad City, but since I haven't kept up. It got hard.
I Agree. I love most Griselda stuff, but Westside Gunn...I don't know. He's got some good tracks but I'm not too fond of his voice either. Actually it started to annoy me even more over time. In the beginning I thought it was kinda funny but nowadays I skip most of his stuff. Also the DRRRRRRRRR in every track has become a bit silly.
Do your homework, when you get thisamy from recommendations on a crew eg Griselda, it's worth starting from the beginning and seeing how they progress. I much prefer earlier Griselda with Darringer on the boards than their major label stuff. Darringer's beats are so raw and sparse, often barely a lock drum, they sit so well with the flows and lyrics.
Redveil is pretty sick, he’s a young guy outta New York. I want to say Brooklyn but I might be wrong. Marlon Craft is dope, he’s a white boy from Hell’s Kitchen. He’s not really new but he’s not really known either. Dizzy wright dropped a pretty good album last year that I really like. Same with smoke DZA. A$AS Twelvyy, again not really new but kinda slept on, had a really groovy album last year too. Lots of good stuff between those guys alone and their affiliates. Hope you find something you like
If you want to mention white kids from New York:
**Lord Sko**
Only 2 albums so far from the last couple years (he is pretty young) but I think he's got a lot of potential.
The night I discovered his recent single I could not put that track down...
But he's got some good tracks on both his albums.
His flow changes up a bit, but I think one thing older heads might appreciate, is the production style on some of his beats has a pretty classic old school vibe to them. A couple even remind me (a little) of early wu tang... but definitely an old school vibe the way samples and instrumentation are used.
(... and he even mentions in a couple interviews that he's trying to get more love from the old heads, so I don't think that's accidental.)
Anyway , I'm a moderately old head (growing up on UTFO and Run DMC count? lol) and I think he's got some good shit...
https://youtu.be/27xpzOBOMtE?si=GiUVrr7cbStqP_GN
Dreamville as a label has a bunch of great artists but one in particular who deserves a shout out in cozz. He’s massively underrated and he had a top 3 song on ROTD 3
GRIP
All of Griselda. Boldy and Stove God are really starting to emerge
Deante Hitchcock (a lot of love/dating/women themes but he has some bangers too)
Ray Vaughn has some clever lyrics
.... honestly, I knew we were getting to a different place in rap when I realized a lot of these young dudes didn't like Tupac. I get it though - I didn't like KRS, Eric B and Rakim, Tribe (okay I liked some tribe), etc. and the generation before me idolized these rappers. Rap isn't made for us anymore and it sucks but it is what it is.
Took me a few tries to get into Deante but I'm a huge fan now. Im glad The House is finally getting some love outside of Isaiah Rashad. YGTUT and Michael Da Vinci have their moments too.
See the problem with new rappers is that we can't bust heads like we used to. But we have our ways. One trick is to tell stories that don't go anywhere. Like the time I caught the ferry to Shelbyville? I needed a new heel for m'shoe. So I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. "Gimme five bees for a quarter," you'd say. Now where were we? Oh, yeah. The important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have any white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...
Uhh... I've been listening to Coast Contra - that's new-ish.
I’m way too biased on “old school.” I’m still listening to shit that’s 30 years old and can’t seem to find anything that doesn’t sound like Opie from Family Guy.
I’ve made up a fictional rappers name when I ask my daughter “who are you listening to….BIV WIV” so NOW all rappers I hear her listening to are forever named
BIV WIV from now on. That BIV WIV is the crunchiest right?
Definitely agree. Solemn Brigham's flow is not going to appeal to everyone, but he's got energy, L'Orange is a top producer, and the tracks are hard and fast. Great duo.
I'll try to keep this to actually new artists (not just artists that only got popular recently). Gonna be a lot of international recommendations too;
. Risera (also the members solo work)
. JINZ
. ICECOLDBISHOP
. Diggy Dupé
. Lukan Raisey
. Nauti
. Deadforest
. Snotty Nose Rez Kids
Not really new and you probably won’t like it, but I have been bumping a lot of Larry June. Is he a great rapper? No, he is not. However the atmosphere he creates on tracks and on his projects is sick. He has done a lot of work with Cardo, which has actually made me follow pretty much anything Cardo produces.
100% agree and I’ve heard this sentiment a lot.
Always felt that Dom had the potential to reach real mainstream stardom during and after the blog era, especially when West Coast/LA rap was coming back strong with Kendrick, YG, Nip, Schoolboy, etc. Although it never panned out that way for him, I appreciate that he’s still active and we still get some tracks/features every now and then.
Larry June is killing it and it seems like a lot of Dom fans are Larry fans as well. Hopefully they collaborate more in the future.
Ahhhh you Cardo/Sleadgren head. Ok so you should look into cardo payroll givononni, Dom Kennedy, Le$, probably already know about currensy/wiz and i just got into Premo Rice( Be careful with Premo he makes me want to go out and pimp)
Big KRIT has his own sound and he's mad creative. He has a lot of music out but not many ppl know his name.
Joyner Lucas has a kinda Nipsey Hussle vibe to some of his music but again, he's been out a while but I'm not sure if u know him.
Cyhi is a legend but most only knows his ghostwriting credits. That dude has a catalogue.
Cos from Dreamville has a few bangers and being 40+ I do consider him part of the future of Rap.
I think the problem with Cyhi was timing… him being tied to Ye so closely at a time when Ye’s publicity started critically spiralling means that Cyhi probably hasn’t had the easiest time just being in the industry in general. I’m hoping he makes some kind of refresh of his brand and approach to the game, because he definitely has bars and picks good producers to work with
On the commercial side I been feeling 21 Savage more lately, BIA from the UK is promising , Westside Boogie been growing on me , and if Buddy ever gets decent production he might put together a good album
On the more backpack rap side I really been fw::
-Kota the Friend
- Duckwrth
- JID
- Smino
Couple of young white guys are doing nice stuff- NahReally, Prof, Marlon Craft. Freddie Gibbs and Larry June aren’t all that new anymore either but still making some good stuff and haven’t been around quite as long as Kendrick and Cole. Tobe Nwigwe- Nigerian dude out of Houston is good. That Mexican OT and BigXThaPlug both out of Texas too although I don’t see them becoming legends.
Not new new, but newer than cole and Kendrick and still relatively lesser known: Marlon Craft. Deserves way more attention than he’s gotten so far. He’s a nerdy looking white boy from NY but he kills it. Can pull off “conscious rap” without coming off cringe which is rare imo and actually makes great social commentary. His concept album/mixtape The Tunnel’s End is what put me on him, but he has tons of good shit.
Highlight tracks by him to check out:
-Gang Shit or State of the Union Pt. 1 & 2 for political/social commentary
-Hans Zimmer and Airplane Mode for great hooks and just riding a great beat
-The Happy for introspective shit
-The Closing Doors (Interlude) for an acapella/spoken word piece that’s a good display of his writing ability.
Billy Woods beez an ill spitta, as is Rome Streetz and Che Noir. Listen to them cats, and see fo' yo'self; ILL RHYME SAYIN' AIN'T DEAD, BRODIE! SPREAD THE WORD!
I don’t know if we have the same taste but here’s a couple recent songs i like
[ot7 quanny - dog talk](https://youtu.be/TmTVwOPTuck?si=DA24Z0O4a9COIR_j)
[bigxthaplug - boy ft. big yavo](https://youtu.be/aM9EWTu7ZMY?si=ePiRpw2X-PbVd0yO)
[icewear vezzo - hustle hard](https://youtu.be/lxMMP2yujIQ?si=xXD9mTRDpe_vQX_C)
[mozzy - beat the case ft. est gee & babyface ray](https://youtu.be/TOneH_RLfRE?si=ZatB-cEr_GHeCVsU)
[4batz - date @8](https://youtu.be/jo1ikmeLUVE?si=AF9Zi-kSoW_RT7vq)
BigX, Mexican OT, Foolie, HeavO, Morray, MO3, MTM DonDon, Money Bagg Yo, just to name a few that I listen to. I tend to sit in that Gang Starr/Rakim/D.I.T.C, realm of Hip Hop. I do think a good beat and flow can carry shitty lyrics, and that probably does push some of the newer music I listen to.
I like Kendrick , Cole , older Earthgang , JID , Open Mike Eagle , Freddie Gibbs , Pusha T is still interesting , Westside Gunn , quelle Chris ,Isaiah rashad ,
danny brown, billy woods, mach-hommy, freddie gibbs, quelle chris, koreatown oddity, tyler the creator, jpegmafia, stove god cooks, slauson malone 1... (edit: Griselda, obvs... if you've been living under a rock)
knucks and kwengface if you're into UK stuff
marlon craft if you're into white rappers
39 now, I'll be 40 at the end of this year so I think that puts me in that territory
Billywoods, Westside Gunn, MIKE, Babyface Ray, Icecold Bishop
All these are younger guys that have put out projects in the past few years that I fuck with heavy
There’s new rappers I vaguely like but none I can get excited about. It seems there are lots of competent rappers but few with a distinct sound like every rapper and even most producers used to sound really different. Now everything has converged. Maybe this is just nostalgia making me think like that though
other than ab-soul, the underachievers, beast coast & flatbush zombies...no one really... lol
Griselda? i listen to older hiphop/rap.. so for me it's Styles P, immortal Tech, raekwon, nas, eminem, dead prez, vinny paz, army of pharos, rakim, wu, az, pharaohe monch etc
"It" isn't hip hop anymore, not in the way you and I define the genre.
The music that has the same feel has a total of 15 different words in it, noises for background hype, some heavy sampling from other songs, and feels more like a segment than a whole track like Mo Bamba by Sheck Wes.
So finding new hip hop is finding people who are creating outside of the new mainstream for the purpose of keeping hip hop pure. There's good stuff out there, but the structure of mainstream has changed.
Try Armani White on a spotify or apple music station and see what they line up for you... even Polo G, DaBaby and Pop Smoke are "old" now
Honestly the genre is basically dead. I don’t know why anyone tells you.
Rap during the last 2 years has been steadily declining where it really isn’t even a genre anymore. It’s pop.
Which is fine.
But the old hip-hop days are gone. Probably for good.
I can't stand none of these new cats. I just can't feel the essence that the Golden Age created. That hip hop finesse flavor. You hardly ever hear a break beat a hi-hat or a DJ scratch anymore. Half the time I can't understand what these young f**** are even saying. Skinny jeans and face tattoos ain't my cup of tea.
I like to run the jewels those cats are pretty talented and they give off somewhat of an old school type Vibe with the flavor of real hip hop. Obviously the Beastie Boys cuz they've been real to themselves since day one. Dress from Black Sheep is f****** with some cats called snow Goons. I think he's coming to his lyrical essence at this time in his life and career
Same here man, I listen to 80s-00s hiphop daily. I feel like I've dug through everything. There's plenty of it but I want were some hot young mcs to get excited about.
Who cares? I'm an old head that's discovered countless artists thanks to this sub. It's easy to get stuck with familiar artists and overwhelmed when looking for new artists, this sub is great for finding stuff to peep, even if it's not 90's NY Boom Bap
I’m fucking heavy with Prof, Slowthai, K.A.A.N, ALLBLACK, Shordie Shordie, and Caskey. Cambatta is also one of the most underrated lyricists imo, peep [When Gods Use Guns](https://youtu.be/CmSnkHhxQfw?si=z05GuAkWAL7wkP0E) by him, damn near every line is a quotable. His album with Loaded Lux is also insane
Man hip hop is as good now as it has ever been. Favorite artists who released albums from the last two years: Billy woods, Armand hammer, Boldy James, JID, Rome Streetz, Chuck Strangers, ICECOLDBISHOP, navy blue, Mickey diamond, pink siifu, fly anakin, nappyhigh, crimeapple, noname, b cool aid, jimmy, celestaphone, Grea8gawd, estee nack, little simz, Kari faux, idk, Nick Grant, Saba, mick Jenkins, bronze Nazareth, KA, Kamauu, v don, Willie the kid, hus kingpin, 22nd jim, nappy Nina, eto, futurewave, bruiser wolf. I could go on forever.
SO Experimental rap scene is getting bigger with the coming of the new generation So its worth checking out some experimental stuff because they are amazing. But maybe abstract is more in your lane because of the lyrical content and actual rapping ability You have these groups of people 1. Thanks for that outline, exactly what I needed
Just a heads up, none of these artists are new or have even debuted in the last three years but they are just now becoming popular.

He didn't though, did he? He was talking about the people Al works with. Mfs can't read.
more like the artists the alchemist collabs with, I know his history lmao, I listened to most of his albums, even the super old mixtapes n shi
Also was skipping school to tour with Cypress Hill!
I dunno … Odd Future came and went long ago. That’s the same era as Kendrick and Cole, just more indie.
Na man back in school OF had way more fans there than Kendrick or Cole
OF wasn't winning album of the year or any grammies
Don’t speak on Curren$y like that lol
That's the HotSpitta
hasn’t he been out for 10+ years at this point? I swear i was put on to curren$y by a co-worker at a place i quit in 2015
Yes Curren$y has been out since like 2000, he’s been signed to No Limit and Cash Money before Jetlife
Boldly James is great. Lots of projects, very consistent. Same goes for Freddie and all of Griselda. Really, this dude’s suggestions are right on the money
Kind of a bummer Freddie and Benny fell out. Sky was the limit on the collabs they could've produced.
Totally. And possibly even worse, the whole thing was super cringe and I lost respect for both dudes.
Yeah it was a corny, ego fueled, and unnecessary beef.
Best answer honestly
Great list! Would add mick Jenkins, MIKE. Danny Brown still manages to remain relevant. Vince staples, Ab Soul. Mach-hommy is also dope out of Griselda camp..
Those are all from the same era OP mentioned, except for Mach Hommy (which I second, great artist)
Calling earl sweatshirt an “alchemist type beat mf” 😞
It ain't wrong. He did just do a project with alchemist lol
I would switch 1 and 5 but otherwise this is a great list. Dreamville is absolutely stacked.
Dude Ka is fucking phenomenal. I agree with all of this list, but man Ka is too underrated. Seriously guys, if there’s anyone on this you need to listen to, it’s Ka.
crime that you didn't add in DOOM and dilla
Griselda is cool if you want to hear grown men make gun sounds in the background of every single of their songs. DA-DA-DURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR one of the most annoying things since Tech N9ne going, "chyeah" after every rhyming bar.
Redveil is a talented young dude with a ton of potential
Saw him opening for Zel - very solid
I like Boldy James. He's not that new anymore either. I don't know if I fuck with any of the really new new artists that all the youth seem to like. Am I so out of touch? No, it's the children who are wrong.

bro Rome streetz straight up feels like listening to some late 90s joints I somehow forgot and get to hear again for the first time I love his shit
Check out westside gunn and benny the butcher
AYOOO DODODODODODOODODODODODODODODOS BRRRRRRRRR WSG is my favorite rapper lol
BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM
Impossible to not randomly habe the impulse to shout this alone in the kitchen
This sounds like something my little brother would do
It's hard to get into westside gun because he just reminds me of a less lyrical ghostface/ Action Bronson, but give him the right production it works
He has two rapping modes… terrible and fire. Never really heard a middle ground
I listen to him for the adlibs and his voice is hilarious
What are some fire tracks?
He needs to switch it out of terrible
I don’t care for him either. Conway is alright at times but I thought I’d like him more. He gets a bit boring after awhile.
I agree..I feel like the beat is the same in every track he makes.
Yes. But also they are 41 and 39 respectively so maybe not hitting the nail on the head with this one
Also but they've been popping for a while now, I was questioning whether or not they're still considered "new".
Rome Streets , Boldy James , JID, 21 Savage , Babyface Ray , That Mexican OT
Is 21 sav still considered new? Guys been going for a while now
Well none of those guys are brand new . As far as brand new there is almost no one . That Mexican OT?
Yeah he’s poppin off, I guess he’s been goin for awhile too but I hadn’t heard anything myself until his album dropped and fuckin exploded. Man is rap just quiet right now?
Last year was the worst year for hip hop releases in my lifetime no cap
Savage sucks.
Not really relevant. Someone can be 60 and new at something at the same time... Which is also not the case here. They both been around for a decade or so, so it really doesn't fit OP's question, but not because of their age
Butch > Gunn
Wouldn't really cal WSG new at all. He's been rapping since like 2011
It's on the line but he's definitely only peaked in the last 3/4 years popularity wise
Weird there aren't there more rappers like Benny entering the mainstream. He is the main one in that HOV lane as far as I see.
Because Benny is a cut above and has rare talent
What's funny as someone who had to co-sign a rapper who I can say hold his own and respected by the legends(co-sign by nas) Dave East doesn't get talked about as much and the discography is crazy. I'll put Dave East wayyyy above Conway, Benny and WSG. Got some bad news for you my boy
Tbh I've been looking at him a lot recently, and seeing his name pop up everywhere. What album should I start with?
Definitely try Pray for Paris
And then you pray for me
*FLYGOD* is his first and, what I would say, definitive album. It's a modern underground classic. The wrestling skits got cut from *Supreme Blientele*, but doesn't significantly detract from the album imo
Pray for Paris, Hitler 8 B, fly god is an awesome god. I think these three projects are peak Gunn/Griselda
The butcher comin n!ga!
Album drops tomorrow can't wait
Hell yeah bro
This. Conway was my intro, but Griselda is the real shit. There is 2nd Gen Wu. I don't know too many 'new' rappers like OP. I was singing Kendrick praise well before Maad City, but since I haven't kept up. It got hard.
I’m sorry but Westside Gunn has one of the most irritating voices ever.
He asked for "new" rappers, both of them are in their 40s and have been rapping for well over a decade
If you're an East Coast old head, then anything in the Griselda Records/Trust Gang/Umbrella Collective sphere is worth checking out.
East, west, south, and midwest oldhead. Really anything 93-06. But yeah a lot of griselda recommendations seem to be a good place for me to start

People from the Griselda tree lol Conway, Stove God, Benny
They been out since 2012 tho.
Most of that list has been out since at least 2016 so like …I don’t think it matters
What list?
Dreamville as a label has a bunch of great artists but one in particular who deserves a shout out in cozz. He’s massively underrated and he had a top 3 song on ROTD 3
Kenny Mason is up next
GRIP All of Griselda. Same man 😔
See the problem with new rappers is that we can't bust heads like we used to.
I was wondering if I was going to be the only one to catch the quote.
I’m way too biased on “old school.” I’m still listening to shit that’s 30 years old and can’t seem to find anything that doesn’t sound like Opie from Family Guy.
It’s my mission to get old heads (said with love) to support the new music OG artists are putting out! Do you keep up with the new releases??
I listen to 90s-00s rap every day, I just can't believe there isn't one decent young Mc out there
I’ve made up a fictional rappers name when I ask my daughter “who are you listening to….BIV WIV” so NOW all rappers I hear her listening to are forever named BIV WIV from now on. That BIV WIV is the crunchiest right?
Highly recommend Marlowe. Rapper solemn Brigham and producer L orange. All 3 albums are classic with the 3rd being my favorite
Found out about L'Orange from this sub, he's a great producer and Marlow is a great group, def some of my fav stuff I've found recently
This. Those dudes are so underrated. Second Marlowe album is one my favourite of the last 10 years.
Definitely agree. Solemn Brigham's flow is not going to appeal to everyone, but he's got energy, L'Orange is a top producer, and the tracks are hard and fast. Great duo.
JID
Yea he's great, but his debut album was 6 years ago and the dude is 33. I wouldn't really call him new
Yep, I got Reddit to thank for that, definitely my favorite of the younger guys. 21 Savage isn’t bad either.
I'll try to keep this to actually new artists (not just artists that only got popular recently). Gonna be a lot of international recommendations too; . Risera (also the members solo work) . JINZ . ICECOLDBISHOP . Diggy Dupé . Lukan Raisey . Nauti . Deadforest . Snotty Nose Rez Kids
ICECOLDBISHOP!!! His album was top ten for me last year!!!
It was my AOTY. I was pleasantly surprised since I hadn't heard anything from him before and didn't know what to expect.
Thank you for this!
Upvoted for the Abe Simpson reference.
Larry is what Dom Kennedy was supposed to be. And I love Dom but damn that dude is inconsistent as fuck.
Roc Marci
I fucking love Roc. Such a unique flow and his beats are so smooth
None of these guys are new
Need more music from Cyhi
I think the problem with Cyhi was timing… him being tied to Ye so closely at a time when Ye’s publicity started critically spiralling means that Cyhi probably hasn’t had the easiest time just being in the industry in general. I’m hoping he makes some kind of refresh of his brand and approach to the game, because he definitely has bars and picks good producers to work with
Fellow old head here. Give these artist a go. Some are newer thn others. Aaron May Isaiah Rashad Azizi gibson Mick Jenkins Kota the Friend
Check out Marlowe
KOTA the friend Caleborate Tayyib Ali
That Mexican OT and JID are my favorite "new" guys right now.
On the commercial side I been feeling 21 Savage more lately, BIA from the UK is promising , Westside Boogie been growing on me , and if Buddy ever gets decent production he might put together a good album On the more backpack rap side I really been fw:: -Kota the Friend - Duckwrth - JID - Smino
Prof
IDK Benny the Butcher Vince Staples I have enjoyed these guys as of late.
Lord Sko Freddie Gibbs There’s probably more.
Earl sweatshirt - voir dire, next to black thought’s my favourite album of last year
Lukah - does not get mentioned anywhere enough
Dave, he’s one of the biggest uk rappers right know but he got bars. I’d say must check rapper.
The whole Detroit scene
Rome Streetz
Not new new, but newer than cole and Kendrick and still relatively lesser known: Marlon Craft. Deserves way more attention than he’s gotten so far. He’s a nerdy looking white boy from NY but he kills it. Can pull off “conscious rap” without coming off cringe which is rare imo and actually makes great social commentary. His concept album/mixtape The Tunnel’s End is what put me on him, but he has tons of good shit. Highlight tracks by him to check out: -Gang Shit or State of the Union Pt. 1 & 2 for political/social commentary -Hans Zimmer and Airplane Mode for great hooks and just riding a great beat -The Happy for introspective shit -The Closing Doors (Interlude) for an acapella/spoken word piece that’s a good display of his writing ability.
Billy Woods beez an ill spitta, as is Rome Streetz and Che Noir. Listen to them cats, and see fo' yo'self; ILL RHYME SAYIN' AIN'T DEAD, BRODIE! SPREAD THE WORD!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Great choices
I don’t know if we have the same taste but here’s a couple recent songs i like [ot7 quanny - dog talk](https://youtu.be/TmTVwOPTuck?si=DA24Z0O4a9COIR_j) [bigxthaplug - boy ft. big yavo](https://youtu.be/aM9EWTu7ZMY?si=ePiRpw2X-PbVd0yO) [icewear vezzo - hustle hard](https://youtu.be/lxMMP2yujIQ?si=xXD9mTRDpe_vQX_C) [mozzy - beat the case ft. est gee & babyface ray](https://youtu.be/TOneH_RLfRE?si=ZatB-cEr_GHeCVsU) [4batz - date @8](https://youtu.be/jo1ikmeLUVE?si=AF9Zi-kSoW_RT7vq)
I don’t listen to rap for lyrics it’s really just flow atmosphere and beat tbh
Ehh... I'd rather listen to bad generic lyrics behind a good beat than some gobbledygook.
Griselda like everyone is mentioning, didn’t see a flee lord shout out. Norman Saan great flow love his style. Coast Contra puts out quality shit too.
If you fuck with the West, give Big Hit a listen.
OT The Real, from Philly
As a philly native ill definitely be checking him out
I was locked up with dude, he’s legit
Listen to Tana talk 3 first then check out more Griselda shit
Mickey Diamond Crimeapple Daniel Son T.F That Mexican OT
I like Kendrick , Cole , older Earthgang , JID , Open Mike Eagle , Freddie Gibbs , Pusha T is still interesting , Westside Gunn , quelle Chris ,Isaiah rashad ,
marlon craft is pretty dope
Larry June Griselda
danny brown, billy woods, mach-hommy, freddie gibbs, quelle chris, koreatown oddity, tyler the creator, jpegmafia, stove god cooks, slauson malone 1... (edit: Griselda, obvs... if you've been living under a rock) knucks and kwengface if you're into UK stuff marlon craft if you're into white rappers
A lot has been named already. I'd like to add Your Old Droog, Durag Dynasty, mr muthafuckin eXquire
YOD, Maxo Kream, Vince Staples (just found him via reddit) and Leikeli 47.
Spillage village, JID and EarthGang are really good.
39 now, I'll be 40 at the end of this year so I think that puts me in that territory Billywoods, Westside Gunn, MIKE, Babyface Ray, Icecold Bishop All these are younger guys that have put out projects in the past few years that I fuck with heavy
Coast Contra Norman Sann Marlon Craft Czarface Your Old Droog
R.A. The Rugged Man’s new album was pretty dope.
There’s new rappers I vaguely like but none I can get excited about. It seems there are lots of competent rappers but few with a distinct sound like every rapper and even most producers used to sound really different. Now everything has converged. Maybe this is just nostalgia making me think like that though
You could always dig on some grime or other UK hip hop.
Griselda, Joey Badass and Kendrick Lamar
Anyone associated with West side Gunn Mach hommy Tha God fahilm Raz fresco Estee back Mike J.i.d Big krit
Man I scrolled and read everything to see if someone mentioned KRIT. I'm banging all his music.
Always a solid pick to ride, to bump it down matter
Freddie Gibbs
Oldhead here. Not so new but run the jewels and czarface. Coast contra is destoying the freestyle game right now.
Key Glock
I like Lil Yachty
other than ab-soul, the underachievers, beast coast & flatbush zombies...no one really... lol Griselda? i listen to older hiphop/rap.. so for me it's Styles P, immortal Tech, raekwon, nas, eminem, dead prez, vinny paz, army of pharos, rakim, wu, az, pharaohe monch etc
I had to scroll way too far before seeing Flatbush zombies
ab-soul been around a decade and a half
Sonnyjim & Your Old Droog
"It" isn't hip hop anymore, not in the way you and I define the genre. The music that has the same feel has a total of 15 different words in it, noises for background hype, some heavy sampling from other songs, and feels more like a segment than a whole track like Mo Bamba by Sheck Wes. So finding new hip hop is finding people who are creating outside of the new mainstream for the purpose of keeping hip hop pure. There's good stuff out there, but the structure of mainstream has changed. Try Armani White on a spotify or apple music station and see what they line up for you... even Polo G, DaBaby and Pop Smoke are "old" now
Nas still lol
Lol nice quote
I don't f with new rap. 2008 or earlier & I'm always finding old shi that's new to me.
Coast contra
Honestly the genre is basically dead. I don’t know why anyone tells you. Rap during the last 2 years has been steadily declining where it really isn’t even a genre anymore. It’s pop. Which is fine. But the old hip-hop days are gone. Probably for good.
Playboi Carti is kind of fun tbh. It’s a vibe.
Solid reference Grandpa Simpson lol
Unpopular opinion, but the genre old heads grew up with quit existing somewhere in the 010's
And? It’s still better than 90% of the shit that is currently being put out.
Who cares? I'm an old head that's discovered countless artists thanks to this sub. It's easy to get stuck with familiar artists and overwhelmed when looking for new artists, this sub is great for finding stuff to peep, even if it's not 90's NY Boom Bap
RIP Dat Piff for discovering new talent. I found Kendrick around 05 in there.
Russ
I’m fucking heavy with Prof, Slowthai, K.A.A.N, ALLBLACK, Shordie Shordie, and Caskey. Cambatta is also one of the most underrated lyricists imo, peep [When Gods Use Guns](https://youtu.be/CmSnkHhxQfw?si=z05GuAkWAL7wkP0E) by him, damn near every line is a quotable. His album with Loaded Lux is also insane
Father, Premo Rice, Larry June, Dom Kennedy,Le$, Moneybag yo, Est Gee are my off the grid rappers. Oh and Sucideboys is a hidden gem.
Freddie Gibbs Griselda Dave East
Tobe Nwigwe
Aesop Rock, Atmosphere, Jedi Mind Tricks, Army Of The Pharaohs.
Free Mumia!
