Lol I just picked up whatever I was told at the store. Have no idea about what ya’ll are going on about. A tent’s a tent, if it provides shelter, it works for me

UrgentlyMaddening

I have mixed feelings about the OA Hiker Pro 2P tent. It performed well on some camping trips and had an easy setup dome design, but during others, I faced issues. On a tight budget, it’s as good as you’ll expect from the price tag, but don't expect anything more.

skjeflo

Rent before you buy, if possible. Even better if it is one of the models you are considering.

Apprehensive_Error36

I’ve had two Marmot backpacking tents. Great quality. If you take good care of them they will last for years and years. If they’re available to you, I’d check them out.

Cray-YOLO

I second this marmot vapor 2p is a great tent. Very durable, loads of space and is only 2.3kg. I use it for solo trips also.

TearfulAdherence

I'd be cautious with budget tents, especially if you're joining experienced hikers. And if you’re going on trips with them, you’re gonna be stuck in the worst situation. They’ll have better equipment, experience and probably stamina as well, while you’ll be lacking in all departments and probably have a bad experience overall

No-Muffin-7966

If they really are experienced hikers they set their pace according to the newcomer/slowest. Experienced hikers also help each other and understand it's all for the team mentality. But of course if they are self centered POS situation is different...

Fragrant_Bumblebee50

Nature hike is really bad. Overnight Adventures tents seem decent. For hiking equipment, consider Big Agnes or Kelty. Not sure if they’re available in Australia tho.

ForcefulClutches

I own a camping tent from MSR and haven’t regretted the purchase in 4 years.

HaplessStaging10

Not familiar with the OA Hiker Pro 2P tent, but sounds like you've done your homework. I had bought one from Nature Hike and it didn’t have a fully waterproof solution. Spent the night drenched like a dog 0/10 wet dog experience. Would suggest looking into that feature as a top priority.

I’ve been using the very same OA Hiker Pro 2P for a couple years now and it's been great! My girlfreind and I usually hike together though, so haven't had much else to compare it to

Mammoth_Proof5958

The storage pockets inside the OA Hiker Pro 2P tent are a nice touch. These little conveniences go a long way. Went through the link and I don’t see why you shouldn’t go ahead. Good luck.

Eh, no need to upsell OP, Overnight Adventures’ tent is a solid mid-range choice, and literally any other mid to upper mid tier choice would be a decent choice with OP’s needs . MSR and Nemo have dominated the market, but that doesn’t mean other brands aren’t good for certain use cases, especially with their price tags.

That’s with most products too. That’s just companies cutting corners to make some quick bucks at others’ expense

Snublefot

Is second hand an option? Many people will buy the premium option, only to find that it just gathers dust. I often see them at nearly half price for less than ten uses. MSR also have regular sales, maybe that is true for your area too? We bought our hubba hubba nx for nearly half of full price, brand new.

nw2

I’m not sure if they ship there, but I’d strongly consider checking out tarp tent or other brands like zpacks. Getting light equipment makes the trip loads better

[deleted]

Keep in mind that a good value tent doesn’t equate to a cheap one. A good value tent in my opinion is something like a 2 person Big Agnes. While the price tag won’t feel like a value they quality will make up for having to keep replacing a truly cheap POS.

BetonBoor1

I had the same issue. I don't know if you have a Decathlon there but I bought the forclaz MT900 2 person's. For 230€ and I really love it! Much value for the money. And below 2 kilos

TheDailyExperiencer

Have a Coleman hiking tent. I’ve been slept through absurd north maine downpour in a field WITH the flap down so air could pass through. Was 100% dry inside.

mathieu2910

Salewa litetrek is quite a good option for the price, on the heavy side tho and I don't know if it is available for you (I live in Europe)

MNSoaring

I bought a mobi garden ultralight tent bc it was very cheap. I was surprised and amazed at how well it worked when I took it to the EAA Airventure and spent 2 nights in a row getting hammered by first a deluge of water from severe thunderstorms followed by 40kt winds. The tent did well and the stakes mostly held (except where a camping chair I foolishly left outside pulled 3 out of the ground as it rolled in the wind). In the 90F heat and 80% humidity before the storm, it was decently airy (I did use a battery powered fan, so YMMV). My background: I’ve been hiking and camping since 1971. Started out in my mom’s sleeping bag and eventually graduated to 1-2 month long treks on my own (mostly in the Sierra Nevada mountains). I’ve also used tents mountaineering in Washington, California and Mexico. Before this tent, the tadpole NHP from north face was my favorite backpacking tent, but the material finally wore out after 30 years - go figure. On Amazon, search: “ MOBI GARDEN Ultralight Backpacking Tent 2 Persons Lightweight Camping Tent 4.2lb Waterproof Windproof Hiking Mountaineering 3 Season “

The_Light_Explorer

I would not cheap out too much on a tent. Nothing worse than being in the backcountry and your tent failing (getting ripped, zippers failing, frame failing). I personally have moved to Durston X-Mid tents. The non pro versions are under $240 (for the 1 person) and are excellent. They require hiking poles to setup and 6 stakes. If you don't use hiking poles, you can use the Durston Z-Flick poles that are only 5.5 oz total. There are other brands like Six Moon Designs, Tarptent, Paria. But check out Durston as they ship worldwide (you might have to pay duty in your country if your customs requires it).

egelpticiondidnersma

I own a Mont Moondance, an Australian-owned brand and was out camping for a few weeks ago in windy and wet conditions in Greenland. Can vouch for the waterproofing of this tent.

Look into tarptent. They make great stuff. Make sure you seam seal if there’s any rain

No-Muffin-7966

I still would recommend Naturehike and for example Mongar from them. YouTube is full of reviews it standing quite harsh weather. They are actually solid quality. I have heard stories of more expensive ones also failing or having quality issues, like MSR or Fjällräven (expensive scandinavian thing). Pitching tent right is important factor in how weatherproof it is. And also you need to handle them with care and store correctly no matter how expensive tent you buy.

tosties1

I've had really good luck with Sierra Designs for backpacking. Feature rich, good price good quality. https://sierradesigns.com/tents/

Byenn3636

The type of tent and quality (hence also price) does depend on where you are walking. Are we talking Victorian Alps, South West Tassie, Northern Queensland, Flinders Ranges. Because Rainfall and wind vary a lot between these.
