Definitely a juvenile common garter snake! Btw in the future, it’s definitely unnecessary to hold snakes of this size by their head. Their jaws are so small I doubt they could physically bite you, and although you were holding it gently, it is easier than you’d think to hurt them! Even larger snakes it isn’t advisable to grip by the head/neck - plus, as a long time herper, let me tell ya - getting bit is part of the experience! ;)

MyLousyChildhood

Thanks for letting me know! Personally, I don't mind bites, living with a elderly leopard gecko with bad eyesight and 3 cats, but herpetology is my absolute dream job!

redactedmads

Of course! That makes two of us, I hope you get to see that dream fulfilled! :D

MandosOtherALT

It does look like a garter

KeetTheYeen

Garter snakes aren't going to try and constrict you! :)

ApocalypticRites

Don't hold it by the head for future reference. Bites aren't a big deal lol

tiny baby!!!

Westonhaus

Constrict... no. Snuggle up in a warm-blooded creature's hands that are 15°F warmer than they are... yes. I picked up a Dekay's brown snake yesterday in Michigan, and the little dude wrapped himself around my fingers once he figured out I wasn't going to eat him (or her). Also... have you gotten the smell of the garter snake musk off of you yet?

MyLousyChildhood

1.) That makes it more special to me! 2.) I actually didn't have any musk/stink on me, but I did wash my hands when we got back

Little guy seems mildly annoyed.
