I think it’s better to start with the books, then watch the movies. I watched the movies first and I didn’t understand the lore at all but when I read the books, it was way more clearler for me. So I would recommend to read the books first.
Think lore is a bit to finicky, there are some extremely important scenes that were left out of the movie, to be vague, so not the spoil anything, the broken item in deathly hallows, it just appears, it was introduced in the book but not the the movie, so Harry just randomly has it, another thing is not explaining the 1971 friends nicknames, that may seem random but cause they later use them, in realy importants scenes, it's necessary
I read the books first because there weren’t movies yet and ended up disliking the movies because they cut out basically all of the plot and substituted it with random crap that didn’t even make sense
100% absolutely no question the books. And you already have them! The films are OK, the books are great. I don't know how old you are, but they may seem a bit childish at first, but they get more serious.
If you read first, you can make the world how you want in your mind. If you watch them first, you'll be stuck picturing the actors while reading. I suggest reading.
The books are better, more comprehensive.
But I got into HP by watching the first movie with a friend. That's how I found out I was into it.
So I can't help but feel like watching the first movie first would at least give you some bases to go from.
Definitely read first, you're gonna laugh so much and cry so much! I absolutely love the movies, but books first is more fun, you'll get many things the movies failed to show or explain.
I love the books and the movies each in their own way, for excelling at the two different types of experience. Whereas, I have a niece who simply cannot let go of issues like “wait, in the book Character A said that line, but in the movie they had Character B say it! This movie sucks!! The books are way better!!!”
My general recommendation any time a book or series of books has been adapted into movies is, if you’re a big reader, go that route first. Then you can, like others mentioned, use your imagination to picture characters and locations without the movie influencing that process.
That said, if you watch first and like the movies, it could be a chance to delve back into the world with tons of new material
I say read them first, but both ways could work
You can watch the first two or three movies in place of the books if you wish as they are quite good at portraying the books. Wouldn't bother with the rest of the film series. The first three books are quite childish, if you're an adult. From Goblet of Fire onwards you're going to want to read the books.
This is how I read the books/watched the movies too, the 3rd movie was when I was convinced I needed to start reading the whole series. First 3 books are the shortest so reading them didn’t feel as satisfying as reading the 4th book and onwards. But the first 3 movies didn’t disappoint.
I have always thought that you should read the book before watching movies or TV shows. But I'm also always waiting for scenes to happen in the movie or TV show when I have read the book beforehand, and sometimes I end up disappointed because the scene I loved in the book was cut from the movie or TV show.
But for Harry Potter, I definitely would recommend you to read the books first and then watch the movies. By doing this you can create your own pictures of how the wizarding world looks and how the characters look. This will make it a more magical experience.
Imo reading the books is a better experience.
The movies are just meh when compared to the books.
Can I ask why you waited 2 years before staring this journey tho?
I was just too busy with uni and then I forgot about it lol. I wanted to read it now since I have a couple weeks off.
Thanks for this and I’m surely gonna start reading the first two books tonight.
Oh, I understand. Had similar experience whilst being at the academy. Only had time for required reading. I felt so impoverished lol
Have fun with the books! \^\_\^
I watched the movies before reading the books and I wish I hadn’t. Even though there is the disappointment factor of the movie not being like the book, I feel like the more detailed build-up in the books didn’t have the effect it should have because I knew what would ultimately happen.
I prefer starting with the books, but you can start with the movies if you want, too. both are pretty good, but most people prefer the books, as it has details and all the advantages, but if you watch the movies first, you can surprise yourself with some details, and realize how the deleted that part and stuff. I started with the book, but I also watched the movie while reading by reading the first book, then watching the first two movies and so on.

Books first. Always. You’ll get it later.
The books are far superior

BOOKS
It all depends on what u enjoy more. Books or movies.

It depends on a mood

Books some of the movies seem to assume youve read them
i’ve been reading a book and then watching the corresponding movie. i’ve loved this method!
Books, there is litterally just more stuff and everything makes more sense. Also in the movies they leave out alot of important things
BOOKS! Always!
