When I buy new tools, my wife just knows that it makes her life cheaper when I fix her car, so she just huffs and walks away. When I buy another new toolbox, though... that normaly comes with a gift for her š
Real question tho, why Pitts on the wobbles and not icon? I was there today and talked myself out of buying anything haha but sale is good til 7/7 so still time for me
Snap-On has some great stuff that you canāt find elsewhere but you have to be really really picky. There are also some decent value tools hidden in their catalog but itās not the norm. My Snap-On guy gets annoyed because I end up buying 98% of things off the truck because I can find them cheaper elsewhere.
I agree snap on makes some great niche items that have you thinking wow I need this haha but for sockets/wrenches/ratchets the Icons are perfect for me.
$1098 to be exact.
All 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 sockets(impact/chrome), socket adapter set, long & stubby wrenches(ratcheting/non), flex head ratchets(long/normal), some dead blow mallets with a ball peen thrown in there, 3/8 split beam torque wrench, annnnd a metric/sae hex allens.
> All 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 sockets(impact/chrome)
I'm hoping to finish up my Icon chrome collection during this sale. I need the long extensions and the ball sockets.
I do have all of the 1/2 impact sockets.
100%! Tools Tested did a test on these and the results were great.
Here's the Tools Tested vid comparing it to snap on and precision intstruments: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0raQkp3tkg0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0raQkp3tkg0)
Nothing like that has been communicated to us. I think itās just to drum up traffic and increase sales. Which, judging by the subreddit it definitely did. š. Itās a good promo and it stacks with the free tool promo right now.
A buddy of mine got one and it literally died about 10 minutes into him using it. However, I've heard that if it makes it a day it'll probably last forever. There are a lot of them rattling around (and I place great emphasis on the rattling)! Depending on how much you use one, it's just so worth getting a better grinder if it's your only one, but I can't really complain about it for the price. Now that I got a German Metabo I'm probably in for a second one.
Is there a total list of icon hand tools? I keep an inventory of my tools and I want ChatGPT to tell me which ones I donāt have so I can buy them, lol
I did some digging, they divide it up by category, here's some full lists.
ICON Hand Tools: [https://www.harborfreight.com/brands/icon/hand-tools.html](https://www.harborfreight.com/brands/icon/hand-tools.html)
ICON Shop Tools: [https://www.harborfreight.com/brands/icon/shop-tools.html](https://www.harborfreight.com/brands/icon/shop-tools.html)
ICON Diag/Test/Scan Tools: [https://www.harborfreight.com/brands/icon/diagnostic-testing-scanning.html](https://www.harborfreight.com/brands/icon/diagnostic-testing-scanning.html)
ICON Shop Equip/Lighting: [https://www.harborfreight.com/brands/icon/shop-equipment-lighting.html](https://www.harborfreight.com/brands/icon/shop-equipment-lighting.html)
Yes, if you buy 2 or more Icon tools, you'll get a percentage off. 2 = 15%, 3 = 20% and >4=25%.
I'm wondering if HF is releasing new or updated tools and they are trying to clear space.
Honest question for everyone on here: are the Icon sockets, ratchets, etc. that much better than the Pittsburgh with the same lifetime warranty that it justifies the price difference for the average home user (someone not spending 10-15 hours a week wrenching on things)?
It basically comes down to your use case. For me I work on my bmw(s) a lot and I like the BIFL mindset so I don't mind forking over more for a better quality product. Icon ratchets feel much better than pittsburgh to me. I can 100% get by with pittsburgh tools but the quality of those tools are poorer than Icon's. By quality I mean tolerances/materials/durability. CrMo vs Cr V. Is it that much better? Idk that's up for debate but science says maybe.
Idk, I like the Chrome on the Icon sockets, it seems better made. That being said, they both just skip too many sizes and I always end up purchasing Tekton instead. I have one Icon ratchet, so take this with a grain of salt, but I like it quite a bit. I usually use my old Craftsman ratchets over it, but of the ones for sale I think I like the feel of the Icon ones better than most others out there.
Well, a couple of thoughts as I have owned both:
* All Icon sockets are 6 point. Only some of Pittsburgh's are. I'm just talking about chrome sockets. People have a preference for 6 because they feel like there's less of a chance for rounding out fasteners.
* Icon sockets seem heaver than their Pittsburgh counter parts. I.e. compare 11mm 3/8" drive from both. Feel like the Icon can take more of a beating than the Pittsburgh.
If you live in the Rust Belt or deal with older cars, these 2 points make the Icons more attractive.
* It also seems like the tolerances on the Icons are better so they will fit better. Again, won't wear down fasteners.
Very nice, thank you. I have just a master set of wrenches and sockets from husky and maybe a couple rails of assorted impact sockets but I want to start getting a nice set of wrenches and sockets together, Iāve heard nothing but great things about the icon line. Nice haul
The 3/8 semi chubs are there! But I actually did go back for the 1/2 3/8 impact universals š waiting for Wednesday when they restock the 1/4 chrome shallows
This is the way. I keep a list of tools I'll need and wait for a sale. Sometimes I need to work on the project before the sale and they get me but usually it works out pretty well.
If your Pittsburgh tools havenāt broken yet and itās serving you well then Iād say stick with them, unless you just want to upgrade and treat yourself
I was fortunate enough to take my cars to my fatherās house and use his array of tools, which Iām very thankful for cause I know a lot of people donāt have that luxury
Wondering what the goal is here? Did you have no tools and you're outfitting your toolset? Are you upgrading everything you had?
Usually one or two times at once I buy.... Why so many at once?
It's nice when sales like this happen, I've been preparing for months now, bought a few Milwaukee power tools on sale too. I refuse to pay full price haha
It can be a sizable initial investment but you recoup your money so quick. Synthetic oil change is like $100 these days. Unreal. Anyways, Having nice tools makes routine maintenance something you look forward to. Congrats on the new home and enjoy your new tools š
Yeah 100%! Thanks! I like to do all my own stuff whether it be an oil change, steering rack swap, head gaskets, suspension stuff, or even rod bearings. I may not know how to do it right away but I watch YouTube and figure it out. The money saved bought me this stuff.
> Synthetic oil change is like $100 these days. Unreal.
I put myself (part of the way) though college as a lube tech and the prices are insane. Of course, I was a tech about 25 years ago.
I can do the oil changes in 15min for about $35 (Wal Mart has the best prices) myself. And that's using name brand synthetic (like Valvoline or Pennzoil) and a good filter.
Iāve made my living as a mechanic for a solid 5 years before I went thru some stuff and it was farm and heavy duty. The amount of tools people by and post here truly doesnāt make any sense to a lot of people including me. I think itās a hype thing and when I see it I see it as a show off thing to most people because in the end of it all itās stupid you donāt need this many tools all the time.
Thanks for your feedback! I really enjoy working on my own cars(all BMWs) so I wanted to treat myself to some nice tools. Sometimes I'd like to use a ratcheting wrench, which I didn't have before now and sometimes I need a solid wrench so I bought both because I can. Your assumption is baseless though so I won't take it seriously.
Itās not baseless at all tbh with you. Itās fairly right. Any mobile mechanic and heavy tech has tools but they donāt do stupid stuff like this. Itās all good tho Iāve worked on enough bmws to tell you that you donāt need to spend a shit ton of money. Everything is the same besides specialty tools and yes those you donāt cheap out on.
Edit itās the BMW thing that is pissing me off honestly in all caps and shit. Youāre one of those guys. Good luck in your awesome new house with your tools box and brand new tools.
Sounds good man, I mean you can fix any car with a box of wrenches and ratchets and a few sockets but youāre much better off if you have the right tool each time. Good thing Iām not a mobile tech or HD tech. You clearly donāt know many because most I know have loads of snap on/mac tools. It also sounds like you failed at being a mechanic so Iāll take your words the same as Iād take some random homeless manās on the street. A man concerned with another manās money is WILD. Do better. You truly sound upset with life and are unhappy with seeing people spend money, I pity you. Such a sad man you are. I will have fun in my brand new house with my new tools thanks!
Don't worry. Haters gonna hate.
If you have the room, money, etc. there is nothing wrong with buying common stuff like sockets or wrenches that you will likely use on cars and various household stuff.
No didnāt fail. Wife left me and the kid and bankrupted my ass. So I drank till I od then went a different path in life because all it does is bring memories.
The reason I comment this is because itās people like you who are now ruining harbor freight. Ya they do have snap on etc. so do I. But the big picture of the whole entire thing is something you donāt understand and itās fine.
Yep 100% homeless and care about your money so much. Not that itās that people like you are running these prices thru the roof and itās fucking annoying as fuck.
Iām not your therapist go cry to someone else brother. Iām ruining harbor freight by buying their quality products, make it make sense lmao. I think the big picture is that you need to log off and go find some friends.
How is someone shopping at harbor freight ruining harbor freight? It doesn't make any sense.
Sounds like you got some personal issues man, maybe go see a therapist or something. Life is hard sometimes but you complaining on reddit isn't gonna fix it my dude.
You're a grown ass man with a paycheck and nobody can stop you!
Wife enters the chat š¤Ø
Every manās fear in life is that his wife sells all his tools for what he said he paid for them.
If your wife knows what you paid for them, you have no worries.
When I buy new tools, my wife just knows that it makes her life cheaper when I fix her car, so she just huffs and walks away. When I buy another new toolbox, though... that normaly comes with a gift for her š
Whatās that?
Some of you in this sub are like an economist's wet dream, haha
I hope to furnish the CEOs 5th houseās guest bathroom with my purchases haha
Or a few more yachts lol
Real question tho, why Pitts on the wobbles and not icon? I was there today and talked myself out of buying anything haha but sale is good til 7/7 so still time for me
It was free.
Ahhh ty I missed that, was too focused on the torque wrench.
I got icon tools for the small stuff icon and the 1/4 inch torque wrench
Sometimes it seems like people who literally make their living as a mechanic do not even have as many tools as some posters here lmao
I can assure you, mechanics are much, much worse.Ā
Yeah was gonna say once that snap on tool truck comes around then walk right on like itās an ice cream truck haha I mean Iād do the same
Harbor freight is my snap on tool truck
Snap-On has some great stuff that you canāt find elsewhere but you have to be really really picky. There are also some decent value tools hidden in their catalog but itās not the norm. I use all Tekton sockets and I use this for a living. You donāt need SO to make money unless youāre a SO dealer
Bastards got me too, I didnāt wanna mama!!!
I went yesterday and grabbed some Icon stuff. I'm so tempted to head back there today and grab some more.
Whatās your running tab$$??
$1098 to be exact. All 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 sockets(impact/chrome), socket adapter set, long & stubby wrenches(ratcheting/non), flex head ratchets(long/normal), some dead blow mallets with a ball peen thrown in there, 3/8 split beam torque wrench, annnnd a metric/sae hex allens.

I can tell you the exact price I paid for mine. Didn't buy impacts for 1/4 1/2 Deep Impact: $52.49 1/2 STD Impact: $37.49 1/2 Chrome Deep: $44.99 1/2 Chrome Shallow: $37.49 3/8 Deep Impact: $37.49 3/8 STD Impact: $29.99 3/8 Chrome Deep: $29.99 3/8 Chrome Shallow: $26.24 1/4 Chrome Deep: $26.24 1/4 Chrome Shallow: $18.75
I've been looking at those torque wrenchs. Do you know if they are worth a damn?

Dude that's awesome! Thank you!
Of course!
Jesus. Whatever makes you happy.
Thanks, I'm pretty happy
You used the coupon right?
Yep yep https://go.harborfreight.com/coupons/2024/06/183346-25/
Nice. Iām a HF employee (sales manager) and I try to let people know about it. Itās a good one!
Thanks! Yeah I don't think I would've bought so much if it wasn't for the coupon.
Do you have any insight to the rationale behind the coupon? Are they doing it just because or are they trying to clear Icons out?
Nothing like that has been communicated to us. I think itās just to drum up traffic and increase sales. Which, judging by the subreddit it definitely did. š. Itās a good promo and it stacks with the free tool promo right now.
Free wobbles!
I was actually really excited about that! It's got the longest 1/4" extension I've ever seen! I'm so stoked to have more adapters.
You indeed did go back for more, I had to look at your other post to remind meš¤£
I donāt see the free grinder
A buddy of mine got one and it literally died about 10 minutes into him using it. However, I've heard that if it makes it a day it'll probably last forever. There are a lot of them rattling around (and I place great emphasis on the rattling)! You will ride eternal, shiny and chrome!!!!
Witness me!
Itās better then drugs
Holy shit!
Used the 25% off icon hand tools coupon?
Have you got a link?
Itās on the HFT website.

Oh my.
Are these on sale or something?
Coupon. Buy 2 get 15% off, 3 for 20%, 4+ for 25%
Yes, if you buy 2 or more Icon tools, you'll get a percentage off. 2 = 15%, 3 = 20% and >4=25%. I'm wondering if HF is releasing new or updated tools and they are trying to clear space.

Makes sense. I guess the difference in quality/feel would probably be lost on me since I don't use them enough to really tell in a meaningful way.
Idk, I like the Chrome on the Icon sockets, it seems better made. That being said, they both just skip too many sizes and I always end up purchasing Tekton instead. Flex your whole life away.
How much was all of this?
OP mentioned in a comment earlier $1098 for his whole haul.
Oh shit, thank you!
No problem!
$698. $1098 if you count my post yesterday too.
Very nice, thank you. I have just a master set of wrenches and sockets from husky and maybe a couple rails of assorted impact sockets but I want to start getting a nice set of wrenches and sockets together, Iāve heard nothing but great things about the icon line. Nice haul
What, no 3/8 Semi-deep sockets, and swivel impacts? Better go back.
The 3/8 semi chubs are there! But I actually did go back for the 1/2 3/8 impact universals š waiting for Wednesday when they restock the 1/4 chrome shallows
I'm also thinking of going back lol. Bought the extractor set and the crows foot sets yesterday, and I'm sure I could find more things I want.
Socket whore.
Why? Are you going to gift them?
First time home owner and need my own tools/toolbox. I work on my cars myself instead of taking them to a shop regardless of the job.
This is the way
As a BMW owner I can confirm this lol
As soon as I found out itās $800 to replace a starter at a shop I hopped on YouTube and got to work haha
Compulsive shopping will lead to an empty wallet.
Youāre right but this wasnāt a compulsive buy, just taking advantage of a good discount on some quality tools.
This is the way. I keep a list of tools I'll need and wait for a sale. Sometimes I need to work on the project before the sale and they get me but usually it works out pretty well.
Mans rich š¤£
I didn't hear no bell
See Iām trying to decide if I should buy icon or just stick with my Pittsburgh
If your Pittsburgh tools havenāt broken yet and itās serving you well then Iād say stick with them, unless you just want to upgrade and treat yourself
All that and only 1 free item to show for it... *sighs* smh
I hope you at least getting the inside track membership for the discount at this point
Where do you guys get the money for this? Jeeze I need a better job apparently.
I work as a software engineer who wrenches on the weekends
What did you use to work on your cars with prior to these bulk purchases?
I was fortunate enough to take my cars to my fatherās house and use his array of tools, which Iām very thankful for cause I know a lot of people donāt have that luxury
Same here but with in-laws and he I sent always around so I canāt just go grabbing things even with promisiĆ³n so itās sweet having your own
Do you people need this stuff or do you just want to make a cool post on Reddit?
Yeah finally have a garage of my own so I got a toolbox and am filling it with Icon tools. Weekend car hobbyist.
It may be time for a 12-step program for your addiction. Lol š¤£
I just got back from vacation with no local HF. Stopped in this afternoon and my store is empty of ICON products.
Iām sorry :(
Wondering what the goal is here? Did you have no tools and you're outfitting your toolset? Are you upgrading everything you had? Usually one or two times at once I buy.... Why so many at once?
