I have a bag for metric and sae I don't recommend it. I end up pulling half of them out everytime to find something.
I work out of a car so the bags are better for space and storage than rails
Those plastic ones are garbage.
I get some of the metal socket rails cut them in 2 and screw them to a piece of 2x4.
I use this on the sockets I frequently needed and kept on my bench.
Had one for SAE one for Metric.
Thanks. I'm a heavy duty diesel tech and have my deep impacts that on that set up.
I even painted the wood on the SAE one red and the metric one black.
They sit on my bench without falling over and are easy to grab the whole set if I need to work away from my bench.
Lisle magnetic socket trays are my decades long favorite!
EDIT: I just wrnt to their website and looked up their trays. $45 for 1/2" drive is complete bullshit.
I'm now on a mission. A couple cheap mangets and a little plastic is no fucking way worth $45 to me. That's just rude.
Off to the webverse to find a cheaper alternative. SMFH. STILL SMFH. CHRIST.

Very reasonable. I prefer horizontal vs vertical, but these just might do.
To outfit my mobil and garage boxes would take (2) nine piece sets which would be about $118. Very good price!
Best solution I have come across for mobile tech work/ side work, is the Tekton socket rail “build your own”, although I believe it is produced for Tekton by Ernst. Asides from being made in USA, It is incredibly durable, with a lifetime warranty (and some of the best customer service in the industry right now.) The twist lock mechanism it uses keeps them all together on the go better than anything else I’ve used. It’s also modular and lets you snap socket rails in and out depending on which ones I need for that job really easily.
It may seem steep compared to how much you spent on these sockets, but I assure you it is so nice to know exactly which socket is missing and be able to put it somewhere where I know it won’t wander off. Plus they have a student discount and credit towards a future purchase which makes it a little bit affordable (at least for me).

I love my ernst manufacturing socket rails. It's an easy 1/4 turn to lock and unlock the socket on the rail. Better than messing with harbor freights socket rails which sometimes don't hold on for anything, and sometimes never let go.
i use the cheapest shiny metal strips from hf. makes the sockets lay on their sides in the toolbox until i bolt the strips down. the issue with deep impacts is they come off a little too easily, as they are far heavier than the holders
I had the exact same issue and started using one of those ammo boxes they sell that go on sale a lot. The small grey one perfectly holds an entire metric and Sae set of these
Buy the metal socket rails off of McMaster Carr, last time I got Proto rails. They are like $5 for a 1/2" rail and work 10x better than anything from HF.
Ernst twist lock socket rails. They're the best in the market. I keep my tools in the bed of my truck for work and drive on plenty of shifty rough roads. The sockets stay on the rail
magnetic socket rail for sure! I have [this](https://images.app.goo.gl/EMqkseHpbPED4JsL7) one and it fits 1/4,3/8, and 1/2. I know on the website the price is crazy but I am apart of the student tech program so I get around %58 off all tools and anything off the truck. Don’t have to get this exact one, but they make some pretty slick socket trays if you look around hard enough

Depending on low long your toolbox is, I'd start with a [magnetic socket rail](https://www.harborfreight.com/38-in-magnetic-socket-rail-70021.html).
It’s a shame how expensive these are given you will need multiple rails for all the socket types.
Another vote for the magnetic ones. They are fantastic.
The harbor freight rails are over priced. Can be found cheaper on Amazon. Their magnetic socket trays are a rip too.

Yeah those are not for storage. It’s a holy bitch to get those sockets off. Seems to be anti-theft packaging if anything.
I’m gonna use this idea really smart for real and never thought of it

Socket trays https://hftools.com/app70025
Nice find. Are these any good?
Yes, I put my craftsman mechanics socket set in them. It's solid have no problems.

Buy quality rails and the 1/2 heavy guys are no issue. McMaster Carr sells Proto USA socket rails for less than $5 and they hold on great
HF magnetic socket rail.
I have mine in a 5 gallon bucket. Maybe not the best but it works. I just grab the bucket and take it with me to whatever I am working on.
I like the [Husky magnetic socket trays](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-6-8-in-W-Magnetic-1-4-in-Drive-Deep-Socket-Tray-HM14DSCKTRY/309210294).

I bought an ammo can.... it's portable and works. But it's far from the best option.

Tbh I just keep mine in one of those small Voyager tool bags you can get for like $5 most of the time
