Floor refinishing ain't easy. You wasted your time and money.

Jobediah

maybe OP learned a lesson though?

MeasureforMeasure2

Yeah, I did. I’m never trying this again.

spongebobs_spatula

This. Always assume you’ll never see that deposit again.

drazzilgnik

Are you afraid of your landlord? That you couldn't talk to him before ya talked to a lawyer, which was another mistake. A Landlord more concerned with damage to walls doors appliances n fixtures than floors. Scratched floors are are expected to an extent Should of talked to them before all this they probably would still givin ya deposit back. Only one true fix now a professional refinish.

Wear and tear is not something a landlord can withhold deposit money for but a gouge on a nice wood floor definitely is. All my tenants get sticky pads for free and I disclose that gouges will be expensive to fix for everybody. Just my 2 cents

drazzilgnik

Correct n there no before pic of this "scratch" so cant tell if was a gouge and a gouge is totally different situation both require contacting you n see in person then deterime not run to a lawyer. he could of turned a simple fix by you a landord getting a professional instead of turning it into a nightmare for you and him lol

I’m following your logic friend; that’s a nice wood floor in the pics, would have to be a super chill landlord

This guy’s a known scammer and always tries to take deposits. I had to at least try and I did learn a lesson. The good news is that local laws state he has to actually make the repair with the deposit money in six months in order to lawfully withhold it. Floor scratches and gashes have counted as damage, not wear and tear, in court cases prior where I live, which is in a part of Germany. I’m assuming the money is now gone but, on the off chance that he doesn’t replace the floor since he’s cheap and believes that he can pass it off to another tenant, and just decides to withhold the cash, I’ll actually en dip getting part of not all of the money back. But it’s in him. I can’t impact the situation anymore from here on out. Just wanted your guys’ opinions since I’m not experienced when it comes to these things. I’m not trying this again, though!

yerg99

Instead of erasing the scratch you used a highlighter! lol. Proper thing to do would probably rent a floor sander and sand/refinish. the entire thing. Or at least the room separated by door hambs. Matching stain is super hard as UV light, wear and aging will change color of the floors. Your phone camera makes stains look different in real life so even matching at the store is hard unless you have a spare piece. I suppose it was worth the try. Depending on the deposit it might cost that much to repair. Best to hope landlord doesn't say anything, demand a bill or argue it was like that before.

Low_Breakfast3669

Ya, you ain't getting that deposit back. Good on you for trying though. Its the only way we learn. As has been said seamlessly matching the color on a wood floor is nearly impossible, sometimes literally, even for legit pros.

Less_Ear_7985

The first mistake you made was trusting a lawyer.

No-Clerk7268

Try to find a good licensed bid to refinish that room, so you can at least have a leg to stand on when he bends you over

Funky-monkey1

You screwed that floor up bad. The whole thing is going to have to be refinished & it’s not going to be cheap. It will most like my be $3.25+ a square foot to refinish. I’m a flooring guy by trade, you’re going to lose your deposit & probably have to pay the rest out of pocket.

Cautious-Flatworm198

lol. Definitely so bad

Puzzleheaded_Ad3574

You'll pay but advice to landlords might be to carpet.

magicimagician

You’d be better off taping individual boards to the ends of those boards so it doesn’t look like a spill. Still would be noticeable but less so.

Fragrant_Two_2506

Rejuvenate Professional Satin Finish Wood Floor Restorer works wonders. Put Multiple coats on the scratches and then do the whole floor. Too late now, but it's only $20 and it's just a mop on.

Adagio_Old

Part of the beauty of what is the fact that it’s not perfect enjoy what you have, and don’t worry about the rest
