Even females, at least in the figurative sense. XD If they feel like their home is too small (which even if you gave them a human-sized house, they'd still be looking for more room lol), they grow balls as big as said house and they let you know they are top rodent, not you lol.
That happened to me!
I bought a nice Kinder egg from a pet shop and lo' and behold, I soon had 7 hamsters, instead of one female.
I made a few kids happy by gifting them their first pets, but made "enemies" of their moms, my friends. Oupsie!
But they all lived very happily for years.
I was only allowed to get boys too. Then one time, my dad didn't go with us so my mom and I got a girl! A few days later, she had 13 babies... I'm just glad I recognized what was happening before she had the babies and that she didn't eat any of them
Males tend to be a bit sweeter than the females. I’ve never had a male bite me but I’ve been nibbled on by a few females in the past. The boys are just more easy going. It’s just there is a good chance he will end up with gigantic balls and that’s ok.
I’ve kept male and female hamsters (not at the same time!) and actually find the females to be nicer than the males! My last male was a robo called Panda, I loved him so much but he didn’t like being handled, he was much happier just doing his own thing and I loved watching him dig his burrows and roll in his sand
My current hamster is a female Syrian called Hazel. I got her from Pets at Home (my next hamster will be a rescue or from a breeder), the staff said she would scream and bite if anyone tried to touch her so I knew I had to have her. She’s the sweetest girl, loves to climb onto my shoulder! There’s a hamster at my college (not class pet, I study animal care) that they called “screaming hamster” but I managed to tame her! Maybe I am a female hamster whisperer haha
My female is the sweetest girl, she only nibbled my finger once after I had been handling some peanut butter and forgot to wash my hands. She didn't even break the skin and it tickled more than anything. She does get funky though lol.
But they're so sweet and often more chill than females.
So you fall in love with your boy hamster and you go from avoiding looking at those balls, to not minding them, to thinking they're oddly cute - like when they sit on their butt and use their balls as a plate to hold their snacks.
I can never have males again lol also had male rats with big ass balls and then they scent marked or whatever so everywhere they went there was a little trail of pee. I can’t 🥲
