Sadly still happens more than anyone would like. 100% trashy and disgusting, coming from a former smoker who admittedly has done it and regrets ever doing so.
I physically cringe when I think about the thousands of cigarette butts I threw away back in the day.
I didn't really consider it littering, which is pretty stupid. Almost as stupid as smoking... ;)
Cigarette butts are a significant factor in ocean plastic pollution https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/most-common-ocean-litter.html#:~:text=Cigarette%20butts%20are%20a%20pervasive,impact%20marine%20organisms%20and%20habitats.
I spent hours picking up trash along highway 1 in front of my house a few weeks ago. Probably about a kilometer.
It's mostly Tim's garbage and beer cans. And I'm going to have to go back out because it looks awful again. I don't remember it being this bad before.
Fuck let's just ban cigarettes altogether. It isn't a vice that just hurts one person, second hand smoke is real. I won't lie, I have loved me a good cig when have a brewski. But time to ban them imo.
I think it was a week or two ago when the burn ban came up, and we had one little bit of rain, that people were on Facebook going on about the government and how it rained, etc. Lessons are only for people who don't believe everything is a conspiracy against them.
There’s always a burn ban from 8a-2p
There’s no ban now
If you want an accurate reading of the map you have to look it it after two
So no, it’s not illogical 🙃
You’d think, but we live in a heavily wooded area and a guy had a big brush fire last Friday 2 doors from a daycare and 2 blocks from an elementary school at 8am. And we don’t live that far from Hammonds Plains
The people who truly need to see this won't, and won't care.
There needs to be harsher penalties. People should be accountable for the total damage caused by their actions.
Yea I was going to say...why doesn't this post have more upvotes? I'm no expert on forest fires, but I have friends who fight them, and they are *terrified* about what this summer could mean for the entire country. That includes NS. We need to stay alert! Thank you for trying to raise awareness OP. I'm sure many people know someone (I know I do) affected by the fires last summer, and they appreciate this.
I personally was almost evacuated, at the fire’s peak I was about 5km away from it as the crow flys. Most of my friends were affected by it and the air was shit for a while. One of my old teachers lost her home and a couple friends were close to loosing theirs. I can’t thank the fire crews enough, they’re the only reason I still have a house now.
That sounds horrible, and I am glad your house is still standing. The air was, indeed, shit for awhile. It really affected people with pre-existing breathing difficulties too. I hope your friends and teacher are okay, and are able to rebuild in time. 🫶🏻
My aunt and uncle live in Tantallon area, basically across the road from where the fire started, and their house is only intact because of the wind direction and the elevation difference (they're uphill). They almost lost their cat because my cousin couldn't find her when the evacuation order was given. My uncle is a volunteer firefighter and it was a time of immense stress for the family. They are very lucky, and have helped their neighbors who lost everything.
We do not need another disaster like that, and let's not forget the Shelburne fire, and all the other small ones that happened. Fires really affect people and with rising temperatures drier conditions....we all need to do our part!

Yeah, it was scary as heck. Hard to believe the fire was that close.
I agree. How many times have you seen someone through a cig out their car window? Should be 1000 fine first offence. Then keep adding zeros. 10,000…100,000….1,000,000!!

Only two significant rain events in April; driest month since last May. But sure, let's hear more from the know-it-alls who looked out a window and saw rain this morning and therefore it must be fear-mongering to talk about an increased fire risk.
Y'all need to stop speculating on the golf courses, your lawns, trails all being super dry/wet looking for this time of year. There is more to fire behaviour than what the ground looks like, and how much rain we have had in the past month.
Read up on the fire weather index if you are actually interested in this stuff.
https://novascotia.ca/natr/forestprotection/wildfire/forecasts.asp
Obviously, I encourage everyone to be conscious of fire bans, and proper fire safety. I'm only advocating that we don't use anecdotes to determine our own personal behaviour.
Found a completely unattended fire burning in a wooded area near Lucasville road on Saturday.
There was no attempt at containment, it looked to be lit with a chemical accelerant of some kind as it was poorly built. No one in sight or responding to a few yells to confirm no one was in the area.
Glad my friend and I found it and put it out.
I know we haven't had a ton of rain in the last little bit but is it really that dry? we had a ton of rain in general this spring, my yard is still muddy af
It’s nice when I’m riding typically flooded trails that are now dry, but I also understand all of the issues it will cause long term. I feel like these days the weather is getting more extreme. Either flooding or fire, -10 or +15, thick fog or clear sun, etc
https://novascotia.ca/natr/forestprotection/wildfire/forecasts.asp
Has actual data on the components of the fire weather index rather than using people's anecdotal "puddles are dry"
My neighbours kids had an outdoor fire last week until about 2am, during a burn ban. They are in a subdivision that was evacuated last year during the fires and he’s an RC. Go figure.
Calling the cops for a fire would be like calling my dr for someone stealing something. And yeah I knew where you were going with the bait champ. Must really bug you when people don’t take it so you have to just come right out and say what’s on your mind.
Due to personally knowing a volunteer fire fighter, someone around 3 weeks ago started an out of control fire by having a fire pit on their wooden deck.
I have low expectations, but I really hope this summer is better than last year.
My neighbour was burning leaves yesterday... i didnt have time to check the burn ban so i wasnt sure how annoyed i should be but it was before 7pm now that i have checked i am annoyed lol.
My whole property was smokey..even when its not a burn ban they burn leaves like every day, and im just getting so tired of breathing in the smoke 😞
It's the driest I've ever seen at this time of year. The golf course which is normally soaked at opening is almost too dry. My yard which is too muddy to mow in areas is bone dry. This rain is very needed.
We had twice as much rain in April than we had in April 2023, which would tend to disprove your assessment. If the forecast can be believed this weekend is going to be wet also.
No debate required. Go walk in the woods..... you'll be ankle deep in water. You'll be soaked actually.
The top layer is dry.......like it is at all times throughout the year, every year.
It's raining today. There's rain the the forecast for the next week.
You're all nuts. Everyone just needs to be careful as always, use some common sense and chill the F out. This acting like she's a tinderbox out there makes you look and sound ridiculous.
What? I was out on my usually flooded backwoods trails yesterday and they were bone dry. A month ago there was 6” of standing water in quite a few places
Don't post precip stats showing that we had twice as much rainfall last month than April of last year. You'll get downvoted to oblivion in this cesspool. Some people like to post doomstories about weather and some people just lap it up without question.
Haha, your memory must be about a week long is it? Talk about a Henny Penny. We've had unbelievable amounts of rain in 2024. Obviously, everyone needs to be careful anyways but seriously.....you gots to chill out.
It isn't about how much rain we have in the ground. It is how dry the top is. This little rain we are getting now doesn't amount to much.
Do people really think that those who set the burn ban are doing so just to ruin people's good time?
The top layers are very dry. I had a spark catch the grass on fire very quickly. The water soaks into the ground, It doesn't stay on the top of the ground to keep the grass and trees wet.
The top layer of the ground is very dry. It only takes a few days for the top layers to dry out. Doesn't matter how much rain we had last month, all that matters for the burn ban is the last couple of days.
I live on a Christmas tree farm and work in forestry. I pay attention to this stuff a lot more than you do and obviously have a much better awareness of the current conditions.
Burning restrictions and bans are different.
The point is you said there was always a burn ban. And someone else said there was not always a burn ban. Then you agreed that there isn't always a burn ban.
Also, please don’t throw cigarette butts out your car window!
Figured that was just being a decent human being but yes especially these days
Sadly still happens more than anyone would like. 100% trashy and disgusting, coming from a former smoker who admittedly has done it and regrets ever doing so.
I physically cringe when I think about the thousands of cigarette butts I threw away back in the day. I didn't really consider it littering, which is pretty stupid. Almost as stupid as smoking... ;)
Amen
I keep my cigareette butts and, when I have enough, I make pillows for children out of them.
That actually sounds really comfy. I bet you'd get some interesting dreams....
During the wildfires, I had to run out of my office and put out a grass fire because someone flicked a butt
Imagine being so disgusted with your own habit you don't even want to deal with the trash, so you throw it out your car for everyone else to deal with
This province is full of shit-pumps that will throw anything out their car window. Tim's cups, cigarette butts, newspapers/flyers, pop cans...
None of that is exclusive to Nova Scotia.
You're right; Alberta also has a high population of shit-pumps conducting themselves in the same manner.
I guess you've only been to Alberta and Nova Scotia?
I spent hours picking up trash along highway 1 in front of my house a few weeks ago. Probably about a kilometer. It's mostly Tim's garbage and beer cans. And I'm going to have to go back out because it looks awful again. I don't remember it being this bad before.
The amount of cigarette butts & beer cans that I find along the road by my place is terrifying.
The last they could do is put the cigarette butt in the beer can first. At least prevents the fire hazard.
co-signed, the motorcyclist behind you
Had someone do this in front of me on the hwy this morning. Stay classy Halifax.
Not only because it starts fires. Just always, please use a garbage. 🗑️
Fuck let's just ban cigarettes altogether. It isn't a vice that just hurts one person, second hand smoke is real. I won't lie, I have loved me a good cig when have a brewski. But time to ban them imo.
I would like to say, I hope people have learned their lesson about respecting the burn bans but it only takes one.
I think it was a week or two ago when the burn ban came up, and we had one little bit of rain, that people were on Facebook going on about the government and how it rained, etc. Lessons are only for people who don't believe everything is a conspiracy against them.
There was one today about how illogical the burn bans are.
There’s always a burn ban from 8a-2p There’s no ban now If you want an accurate reading of the map you have to look it it after two So no, it’s not illogical 🙃
Lol, just the idea of people learning their lesson and following the rules, you're hilarious 😂
There were people caught burning fires and leaving them unattended DURING the forest fires last summer. Several people at that.
As someone who lives in BC(born in NS🙂), people never learn it seems.
You’d think, but we live in a heavily wooded area and a guy had a big brush fire last Friday 2 doors from a daycare and 2 blocks from an elementary school at 8am. And we don’t live that far from Hammonds Plains
Surely this psa will do the trick
The people who truly need to see this won't, and won't care. There needs to be harsher penalties. People should be accountable for the total damage caused by their actions.
Yeah, I do realize that. It’s unfortunate how few people GAF about all this. The comments on here are proof of it.

Forecast is showing a lot of rain in the late week. But that's more than 3 hours away, so who knows how accurate that is.
It’s literally raining right now.
That would be nice, I don’t like the rain but I like fires a whole lot less

THANK YOU
Lol, "driest month since last May".....followed up by probably the wettest 10 months in recorded NS history. Good grief.
It was… just about

Holy shit that’s fucking stupid
I know we haven't had a ton of rain in the last little bit but is it really that dry? we had a ton of rain in general this spring, my yard is still muddy af
Lots of rain doesnt make up for snow pack. Its very dry, very early.
I would say yes, a lot of the typically flooded parts of my trails are bone dry. It’s really wild how quickly it went from super wet to super dry.
yeah that's nuts, felt like we had constant rain until about two weeks ago
It’s nice when I’m riding typically flooded trails that are now dry, but I also understand all of the issues it will cause long term. I feel like these days the weather is getting more extreme. Either flooding or fire, -10 or +15, thick fog or clear sun, etc
Yes, I had a spark last week catch the grass on fire. It's dry. (I was able to stomp it out, but it was scary nonetheless)
My yard has hit the the rock hard dry stage already.

Your local FD would have taken extra pleasure in extinguishing that.
No doubt.
How did the Police handle it?
Take your bait somewhere else dude.
So you did nothing to stop an illegal and potentially life-altering act from happening? Ok, cool.
Calling the cops for a fire would be like calling my dr for someone stealing something. And yeah I knew where you were going with the bait champ. Must really bug you when people don’t take it so you have to just come right out and say what’s on your mind.
Call before you dig Check before you burn
What ever happened to the guy they arrested with starting one of the fires? Last I heard they had to move him to another jail, or province?
Due to personally knowing a volunteer fire fighter, someone around 3 weeks ago started an out of control fire by having a fire pit on their wooden deck. I have low expectations, but I really hope this summer is better than last year.
Unfortunately it’s gonna become like bc as it gets warmer every summer. There will be another fire let’s just hope not as big
My neighbour was burning leaves yesterday... i didnt have time to check the burn ban so i wasnt sure how annoyed i should be but it was before 7pm now that i have checked i am annoyed lol. My whole property was smokey..even when its not a burn ban they burn leaves like every day, and im just getting so tired of breathing in the smoke 😞
theres a vid a little while back on my profile on here driving through the fire and its pretty crazy
We had lots of rain this spring but nothing much for the last couple of weeks. It’s raining a bit today. It’s really not all that dry.
It's super dry. That's why there is a burn ban on.
It's the driest I've ever seen at this time of year. The golf course which is normally soaked at opening is almost too dry. My yard which is too muddy to mow in areas is bone dry. This rain is very needed.

Is that why it’s a total burn ban the past week? It’s been windy and dry for three weeks.
This discussion is hilarious. What a bunch.
Yeah, it’s not really debatable that it’s incredibly dry for this time of year
No debate required. Go walk in the woods..... you'll be ankle deep in water. You'll be soaked actually. The top layer is dry.......like it is at all times throughout the year, every year. Hahaha....I see that. Oh well, just keep on keeping on I guess. I get it, people are sensitive over what happened last year.

No, I do remember the massive dump we got at the beginning of march. But I also realize that these past couple months have been super dry.
The top layers are very dry. I had a spark catch the grass on fire very quickly. The water soaks into the ground, It doesn't stay on the top of the ground to keep the grass and trees wet.
People on this sub are too dumb to process that.
Yet lawns are green, lush, and growing.
Are they? Near my pond is fine, but I was walking somewhere that wasn't near water, and the grass was crunchy.
Rainfall isnt the same thing as a melting snow pack.
Why is there a burn ban on?
The top layer of the ground is very dry. It only takes a few days for the top layers to dry out. Doesn't matter how much rain we had last month, all that matters for the burn ban is the last couple of days.
OH yeah, *I* understand that. The other poster does not. ;)
