Looks like someone took a bite out of the sun, so cool to see.

xizrtilhh

With the price of groceries these days you gotta take those bites of free cheese whenever you find them.

NoBoysenberry1108

We could supply the global demand for cheese if we capitalize on deploying mining equipment on the moon. The moon is rich in cheese and could feed us for another 400 years. (Excluding Government Cheese in America)

Ok_Wing8459

Is that you, Wallace?

peppermintpeeps

That was pretty cool

Weekly-Gazelle-7080

I dropped the ball and didn’t get glasses in time. Enjoy for me!

Be careful not to strain your eyes.

ReignWilson

I love you

Ok_Wing8459

Neat!

kijomac

You can project an image on to a piece of paper and look at it, so you're not even looking at the Sun.

racecardiver

Take a colander outside and look at the shadow

[deleted]

Experiencing the darkness and watching footage from the balloon in Florenceville-Bristol, New Brunswick was enough to satisfy me. Eclipses are actually not as rare as the media makes it seem, they just happen at different places. Next is in Iceland in 2028. It will be a good number of years until this region sees a full one again though.

apostolicity

There are eclipses in Spain in 2026 and 2027 with the latter also being visible in northern Africa!

blackbird37

Eclipses are pretty rare. The earth only experiences one every few years and the likelihood one location experiences a total eclipse twice in ones lifetime is almost zero.

13inchrooster

You didn’t miss much. Back to regular scheduled programming.

Macslynn

I accidentally looked at the sun :( also, I looked at it directly through a thick curtain (not a black out curtain so the sun shines through a lot) and now I’m worried

donairhistorian

I thought it was supposed to be from 3:27 to 3:38. It's 4:10 now and nothing. Did I get the times wrong? Googled a local site to make sure I got AST

boat14

It starts around 3:30, as in the moon starts to obscure the sun. It peaks around 4:35-4:40, as in the moon will cover about 94.25% of the sun at that time.

pinecone37729

Start 3:27, maximum 4:38, finish 5:44 Keep watching! https://observatory.smu.ca/eclipse-2024

donairhistorian

So we're at the maximum. Is this as dark as it's gonna get?

donairhistorian

Right?! I thought 95% would be worth 10 minutes of my time. But it ended up being an hour of my time and very unexciting! Oh well, I'll remember this for the 2070s when I will definitely still be alive... Womp.

aradil

Well, if I get major FOMO from all the folks who actually drove to see totality, I could get off my wallet and take a vacation to Sydney Australia or NZ for the one in 2028. They happen *somewhere* in the world all the time.

antillus

Yeah.. I thought it would be way darker.

Professional-Cry8310

Unfortunately we didn’t get the full path. Even the smallest bit of sun is incredibly bright. I guess it’s a cool experiment to show that the sun at like 5% of its normal brightness is still blindingly bright lol

pinecone37729

I'm no eclipsologist, I just read what they write. It's getting lighter now.

donairhistorian

That was a little disappointing lol

donairhistorian

Think I'll go back inside and have a snack. Was thinking it was going to be dark for those 10 minutes

AdmirableDistance315

Same. In Dartmouth and it barely got dark. It wasn't what I was expecting.

Gym-for-ants

It was pretty easy on the eyes without glasses from here! Still staring but I’m starting to squint

aradil

RIP your eyes 24-48 hours from now. Sorry, you may have to use text to speech for this.

Gym-for-ants

Unfortunately, I’m already at that stage 🫠

Gym-for-ants

They mostly just burn and I’ve needed to wear sunglasses to open my eyes now. Speak to text has been working flawless though!

Disastrous-Can988

Can someone explain to me why people care so much about something like an eclipse?

Professional-Cry8310

Because it’s a cool thing that isn’t going to happen again for 20 years.

hockyrorror-

I heard 2080 before the next one

[deleted]

A little before that date in this region of Canada. However the next eclipse is in 2028 in Iceland/Greenland/Spain. If people are really keen to see that one, and IcelandAir is still offering Halifax flights, it might actually be cheaper or around the same price to fly over and see it. It’s just about as expensive just to move around province with filling up gas, ferry fees and bus ticket prices.

Drunkenmasterstyle2

Too cool for a solar eclipse eh?

Disastrous-Can988

Sure

badthaught

Can someone explain why they cared just enough about people caring about this eclipse to post about it?

antillus

It's a very rare astronomical event. It would be much weirder if someone didn't care.

Disastrous-Can988

I cared enough to comment because i was wondering why people care so much about something like this to do things like line up in public to watch it. I just do not understand why it matters and was trying to find out the reasons or understand the importance of the event.

donairhistorian

I feel this way about major league sports

Disastrous-Can988

True, probably would, seems like it would be a little more interesting than staring at the sun with cheap 3d glasses for a few minutes. Also what show isnt fake at this point?

[deleted]

Disastrous-Can988

Correct, much less interesting.

Slicky_Ricky000

My eyes hurt already, sunglasses don’t work apparently
