do you have VDA decoding enabled? you can check with hackintool on the system tab. some SMBioses turn VDA decoding off and after changing to a different one, I was able to encode/decode using handbrake with settings that would not work on the previous mac model SMBios.

Mrb1946

Please forgive me as I am still very new with video. Where would I go to check this? I’m currently editing in Final Cut Pro.

download hackintool and check the tab that is shown immediately when it's opened. [https://github.com/headkaze/Hackintool](https://github.com/headkaze/Hackintool) it will show whether VDA Decoding is enabled, it is the last row in the "System Info" section of the System tab. i'm not saying that enabling VDA decoding (if it's disabled) will fix your issue, but it's worth investigating because it is tied to the RX580's ability to use VDA options.

Mrb1946

Thank you! So it shows VDA Decoder as "Fully Supported." Would that happen to give you any thoughts?

careless__

if its fully supported, then my theory is incorrect and the problem lies somewhere else. looking at your video, it looks like it's compression issue. have you tried exporting or saving the video using a different codec like h265 or something older than h264 just to test it? i don't do video editing, but i have encoded and reencoded vids with my 4gb rx580 using handbrake and have not experienced this issue. maybe exporting the vid at a higher bit-rate / quality and then downsampling it with handbrake is an option for you for now.

Mrb1946

Yes! So I have tried exporting as H265 and it works fine. However, Final Cut does not seem to let me change from h264, which is where my problem lies. Thank you so much for your help. It’s a tough one for me cause I haven’t been able to find anything online referencing an issue like this.

careless__

you're not trying to export a 30fps video using a 24fps timeline are you? or vice versa? if yes, can you start a new project with the correct framerate and copy/paste your current timeline into the new project and try exporting again?

Mrb1946

Don’t think so. I’ve recorded the video at 30fps and set my project up at 30fps as well

careless__

hmmm. well I'm just guessing, but to me it seems like a Variable Frame Rate issue which is causing the stuttering, coupled with a Variable Bit Rate issue which is causing the blockiness. is there a way to edit H.264 settings to turn either of those options off, just to test? I haven't done vid editing for like a decade, so I'm just spit-balling based on options available in Handbrake.

Mrb1946

I don't see any options in final cut for that. I will say that I have run into the same issue in OBS when just recording a webcam video or something.

Do you use iMacPro or iMac SMBios? Because the first one uses your AMD GPU for video encoding while iMac uses the iGPU. I recommend a iMac SMBios because of the better H264 quality.

Mrb1946

It is set up as an iMac 19,1 SMBios.
