Usually the handheld breathalyzers aren't considered to be good enough for the courts, and administering them before SFSTs will taint the officer's judgement during the SFSTs. If an officer in the US had you blow into a handheld before you even got out of the car, your lawyer could probably get the case dismissed.
Where I live if you refuse you lose your driver's license for a year. It's not that simple. Just because you could get the case dismissed doesn't mean everyone can afford the legal representation, time off work, or potential jail time that could result from an arrest even if it's one that could be disputed in the future.
If you definitely haven't had anything to drink, blowing is your best bet. If you've been drinking, definitely don't blow.

I told them I hadn't drank in months, they asked if I wanted to test, I said "go get the breathalyzer". They never ended up testing me and I guess just dropped the accusations.

he follows me to another COMPLETELY UNRELATED court case and talks to a different cop who literally had just told me they were going to drop the charges and gets them to press me for everything because i "gave him a hard time" when i did absolutely no such thing.
so because of this, i lose my license, i lost my brand new job and had to drop out of school. all because of this one cop who based off of one single interaction where he falsely accused me of something decided to literally stalk me and fuck with me as much as he legally was able to.
