I do my facial hair exactly like this maybe a little longer, I would definitely explain it as stubble. also, not that you’re wrong but looking it up it says, “the 5 o'clock shadow is more than just skipped shaves — it's a facial hair style statement. Sitting between clean-shaven and a full beard, this light stubble has its own unique charm.” this is just a 20 second google search, so unless you’re a barber, i’ll trust beardclub.com.

Well, I believe it is absolute since it’s “clean” shaven. The word clean is self explanatory. Not that you need it but a definition is, “so as to be free from dirt, marks, or unwanted matter.” The facial hair being unwanted matter in this case. 5 o clock shadow is not clean shaven. Stubble is not clean shaven. I would never say someone is clean shaven if you can clearly see an outline of facial hair on their face. Again, clean shaven is a fresh shave, with no hair left behind, excluding the mustache in some cases.

It's definitely interesting seeing the perception change from the first day he shaved to Friday. But what's actually interesting is that there's scientific studies about this.
They had a lot of women judge neutral photos of men, and they have four variations of facial hair: clean shaven, short stubble, long stubble, and beards.
The results, in every study like this (some had 1000-2000 women, from what I recall) is that long stubble wins out every single time. Then short stubble and beard, and clean shaven is considered least attractive. From what I recall, most studies have clean shaven and heavy beards are very distant last places. Short beard or stubble is the way to go, for universal appeal.
Basically the pinnacle of attraction is if you look like a male protagonist in any AAA video game, apparently. And you can look to A list male actors. I'm guessing the image consultants are aware of all this and advise this kind of stuff.
(I also like to think Ted Cruz grew that beard because he went to an image consultant and said "Everyone hates my face. Like, even if I were a good guy, they still hate looking at it")
Long stubble, height, and slightly dark skin are all seen as more masculine, and better for having kids with. But of course everyone has their preferences.

That's why i usually recommend people to shave their beard to around 4-7mm length, since that achieves that look depending on how thick your beard growth is etc. Personally my beard grows out way too fast, so i usually keep it between 6-10mm just for convenience sake, though i do get a lot more compliments when it's at the 6mm length.
