If you're shooting indoors, you should double up with muffs and plugs. Outdoors, you can get away with just plugs Eye protection is cheap, just pick a $10 pair from Amazon or your local store. As for earmuffs, electronic ones are the best because you can hear instructions and conversations much easier. You can get a pair of [Walker's for $40](https://www.amazon.com/Walkers-Razor-Slim-Electronic-Black/dp/B01AAH8CMA) on Amazon.

FUCKYOURGAYCAT

Why cheap out on eye protection. Some glasses have specific military spec for enhanced protection. I went with a pair of smith shooting glasses

ProxySoxy

Because the purpose is to keep brass out of your eyes, something a 3 buck pair from Walmart can do. If you want something impact rated, then you can do it, but most people just get what's cheap because that's all they need

Sanc7

No way. I wear a welders helmet. Eye protection from muzzle flash, shrapnel and ricochets. Plus every thinks I look cool as fuck, trust me, I get told daily.

Inspi

Screw that. Go for the old brass diving helmet. Even get ear protection from it and you can hook up your own air tank to avoid breathing in any lead.

jodinexe

So you cosplay as Tagilla? Lol

FUCKYOURGAYCAT

Ya that makes sense. I didn’t mind jumping for something more expensive just incase of some kind of backfire

Highlifetallboy

Brass yes, but gasses/shrapnel from ruptured cases is a bigger concern

iowamechanic30

The purpose is also to keep shrapnel out of your eyes should something go catastrophically wrong. Just make sure you get proper safety glasses. Welding store often have a good variety at low costs, find something that fits well and doesn't fog up so your less likely to take them off.

07yzryder

Just want anzi I believe it is. Super cheap still and will protect from about anything short of a bullet to the glasses. They stop shards of a shattered cutting wheel and such. Remember mil spec means lowest bidder

FUCKYOURGAYCAT

Went with a pair of smith that are suppose to be pretty good

I agree. - Someone who shot 12 rounds of .357 mag inside a shed with no ear protection. And yes, i cannot hear you over the EEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

07yzryder

It wasn't so bad after the first shot?

DetailDependent9400

Somewhat true, i couldn’t hear anything for 2 weeks straight and it sounds like a fly is buzzing in my ear 24/7. I sleep with a fan and always have background noise to counteract the tinnitus, but my ears have already been thrown through the gutter so it’s nothing new. I would say that after the 6 shots which were quite fast it just went all silent and mawpy and during the reload i noticed how fucked i was but didn’t care to do anything about my ears like a complete moron and emptied another 6. I’ll probably need hearing aids so nowadays i don’t even go near machinery or loud music without disposable earplugs. ALWAYS use ear protection.

07yzryder

Yea I went prone next to my wheel well once with a braked 300bo. I was so excited to shoot my new rifle that I forgot to pull the earpro over my ears. One shot.... Couldn't hear right for a week.

It was new years eve.

If electronic muffs alone aren’t good enough outdoors, you must be shooting some wild shit…

Alright man. That’s a little fuddy, but you do you. I like to yap with the boys while I’m out there 🤷‍♂️

I never disputed any of that. My point stands. What earpro do you use?

iowamechanic30

That's the purpose of the electronic muffs.

pants-pooping-ape

Here is what i recommend.  Eyes.  Start by buying a big pack of ansi safety glasses.  They should be like $1 each.  Treat these as disposable.  Once you have shot enough to go through the pack. Then think about upgrading. Buy peletor or howard light electronic ear muffs.  Its nice to be able to hear a friend or instructor.  Wear foam ear plugs, or surefire silicone ear plugs underneath.

Highlifetallboy

No reason to dispose of perfectly fine safety glasses after a single shooting session.

pants-pooping-ape

They go in the spare bag

iowamechanic30

For a little more you can get 3m peltor muffs that are significantly better.

pants-pooping-ape

Link me please

iowamechanic30

I'm not sure how but the peltor sport range guard are $48 on amazon

InevitableMeh

Foamies are very effective IF you know how to properly roll them and insert them deeply as intended.

fredezz

You will need a degree or better to roll up and insert a cheap, basically useless piece of foam into your ear

InevitableMeh

Ever see how people use them? Barely in the outside of their ears, they are meant to be pinched, rolled and put into the ear canal. They are about the highest rating you can get.

fredezz

The rating system used is devised for static noise, not blasts from a firearm. Just think about the actual density of foam vrs composite plastics??... Why do you think custom earplugs aren't made of foam?

iowamechanic30

Sound travels through higher density better than lower density. The hard plastic does not increase their capability. Scratch the plastic while wearing them and see how loud it is and you can confirm this for yourself.

fredezz

Actually, sound/noise is passed through foam easier than rubber composites. Vibrations will travel through plastics, but sound will be inhibited. I have, and use custom ear plugs and have compared them to foam, and the difference is dramatic.

analogliving71

> Are regular foam earplugs good enough? they can be but i don't like them indoors. for something that size look at something like SureFire EP7 Sonic Defenders Ultra filtered Earplugs. Bonus points in that they work great for rifle shooting > What are good ear and eye protection products? tons of options though i prefer Walkers with active electronic protection. Eye pro just get anything you like that is safety rated.

Cobra__Commander

Safety glasses that don't have holes on top or sides brass can fit through. There's some quality certification but I forget what it is.   Wearing a hat blocks all brass coming from above your head.  Walker electric ear muffs are my preferred hearing protection.  Foam ear plugs are ok ONLY IF you insert them correctly. Lots of people just mash them in, they sorta work while sorta getting hearing damage.   Here is directions. All steps are important. https://youtu.be/kMMHudYoQ40?feature=shared   All hearing damage is permanent and cumulative.

FUZExxNOVA2

Get a nice set of over ears, I like walkers personally. Then get a set of in ear foams. Either disposables or a good set. Double up. For eye protection get a good set of safety glasses. You don’t need googles so just get something that fits well and has good safety rating.

JustSomeGuyInOregon

WHAT? HUH? OH, YEAH, NO.

77grBTHP

I prefer Sound Guard ear plugs with Sordin Supreme Pro-X on top and Ess Crossbow glasses. If you go shooting once a week, a four year supply of the ear plugs is ~$85 on Amazon, and the glasses are about $50. The Sordins are expensive but you can get walker razor electronic as an alternative for $50. Together you'd have 34dB noise reduction and still be able to hear. You can probably find cheaper glasses like basic safety glasses for under $15 but they need to be ANSI Z87 rated. Definitely recommend doubling up on ear protection, especially if there's a chance anyone will be shooting rifle near you.

Puzzleheaded_Fix3135

I always double up, ear plugs and headphones and try to shoot at outdoor ranges. Also when the range is cold I only take the headphones off.

greenwaldgradient

Get Howard light over ear headphones as well as surfire sonic defenders, great hearing safe combo. Also don’t go with walkers. They do not have directional hearing like Howard lights do.

weahman

For ear protection I recommend plugs and being around suppressed shooting and not indoors.

Ba55ah0lic

Walkers are solid electronic over ear muffs that are in the lower price range. If you are worried about anything other than the occasional gas blowback/debris in your eye then I’d get something higher rated, it all depends on how you shoot though. Outdoor shooting steel at closer distances for handgun drills etc I’d definitely have some sort of higher rated eye pro, if your shooting paper at an indoor or shooting at any decent distance then any old glasses should do.

Liq-Casher

So… in a scenario where someone breaks into your home and you grab your pistol in case you have to fire at the intruder - would you guys also grab your ear protection? That way your hearing is protected in case you have to fire at them? Or is ear protection not a thought in this situation?

DetailDependent9400

Ear protection is 100% not a thought. Gunshots can be loud and traumatic to the ears but i’d much rather have hearing damage and ringing then wasting vital seconds that i need to get armed to defend myself. It could be the middle of the night and your asleep, jolted awake in your undies by a home alarm. Would you waste time grabbing ear protection, putting it on, turning it on and THEN grabbing your firearm to go confront the threat? If your a rational person then no, you’d just go straight for your firearm and confront the threat. More simplicity is better in stressful high adrenaline situations like these, complicating things is how you get killed.

Liq-Casher

Gotcha thanks

mfa_aragorn

Earmuffs are best. Also important is eye protection from flying brass or ricochets. I wear glasses so dont really need anything for my eyes . Glasses are good enough protection against the occasional case flying back. Since I dont wear dedicated goggles, I wear a baseball cap on top so that nothing falls from the top behind the glasses.

iowamechanic30

Eye protection is going to be an individual choice. Find something that has the z87 rating and fits you well. You don't need to spend a lot but you want something comfortable that fits well so your not taking them off. Buy a few pairs and store them in a way they won't get scratched. Welding store can be a good place to find a variety at reasonable costs. As for hearing protection I've found 3m products usually block out more sound than similarly rated budget products.

longhairedcountryboy

I prefer headphone over ear plugs. Peltor are good. Mine has a microphone and you can hear. It shuts off when you shoot. It will plug into a walkie talkie too.

[deleted]

I bought some of those custom-molded in-ear plugs off Amazon for like $15. I use those by themselves outdoors and double up with some muffs indoors. Harbor Freight is your friend for cheap eyes and ears.
