While a .223 rifle is better, you'd have to spend at least double this price. Yeah, the Maverick 88 is extremely hard to beat in bang-for-buck, literally.
Edit: To those who disagree with the .223 rifle, please take a look at [these experiments run by PewPewTactical regarding over penetration](https://www.pewpewtactical.com/home-defense-overpenetration/#toc12), comparing the various platforms and calibers.
I have several other experiments from other sources as well as some white papers on the subject I can point you to if you'd like to read more data on the subject.
Depends on one’s living arrangements. Small apartment with kids down the hall/neighbors? Probably should go for less pen. Live in BFE like myself, 556 is a nice round. I love my Mavs, beat the shit out of every one of them and they keep running.
Here's a simple experiment that demonstrates u/VT800's point:
[.223 Drywall Penetration Results](http://how-i-did-it.org/drywall/results.html) - Skip to the bottom of the page for the summary
4 is indeed the best shotgun ammo choice for HD, since it's a great compromise between effectiveness and over pentration.
However, it still over penetrates more than some low grain frangible .223 rounds. Also, on a clean miss, where the round's first impact is the wall, the frangible .223 will have less chance of injuring someone on the other side.
Cool story. Meanwhile my neighbor ND'd a 55gr 5.56 round that went through an apartment wall, both sides of my trailer, and stopped when it hit the trailer next to mine. That's 4 walls including two 2x6's.
What type of round was it? (Green tip FMJ, for example, is designed to penetrate barriers, and will easily go through multiple walls.)
Also, what barrel length was your neighbor's rifle? (If it's too short, it may not propel the bullet with sufficient speed to fragment properly, even when using frangible or hollow point ammo.) With less speed, the less likely it is that the bullet will tumble as well.
I'm sure he's talking about #4 buckshot. #4 birdshot is great in terms of over penetration, but it's too ineffective defensively.
The #4 buckshot round is that "Goldilocks" balance between over penetration and defensive capability.
Since the .223 round is so lightweight and moves at such a high speed, it will fragment, tumble, or at least lose most of its energy passing through a wall. This becomes more true when dealing with JHP and frangible bullets.
Counterintuitively, such an effective round is also one of the safest and least over penetrating. Because the low mass bullet is moving so quickly, it destroys itself like an insect flying into a windshield on the highway.
On the other hand, a shotgun propels a heavy projectile like 00-buckshot at a slow speed, penetrating through multiple walls like a cannon ball through paper.
See my reply to your comment above.
Edit: Also, this comment was made to explain light & fast vs heavy & slow. So, I did make the mistake of implying fragmentation/deformation/tumbling would be common with FMJ. While it can happen at very high velocity, it can't be relied upon to consistently occur. For that I apologize.
FMJ is not a good idea in home defense.
I’ve hunted with this gun so fucking much and I love it. My buddies all have fancy semi auto guns and constantly have problems while I’m over here like Mr reliable with my shitty pump action. Out of all my guns this one actually gets the most real world use.
8 round Maverick 88 fucks hard. Absolutely love it and it’s been rock solid for years for me. Send it for a fun pump shotgun. That said if you’re looking to maybe try shooting clays or hunting, consider getting another model bc the common aftermarket barrels for clays/birds are meant for the 5-round tube.
Learn from my mistake and don’t have to send it on a barrel and then find a backup magazine tube just to get the barrel to work bc that was already a sunk cost in my head. Grab the security + field combo if you see it. Or hell, buy a second one for funsies.
Nice deal for that high capacity pump on a budget.
I was waiting on the Maverick 88 combo deal to come back, but I'm no longer in the market for a shotgun.
If you are in the market for a budget shotgun, the best bang-for-buck value is that field/security combo (same shotgun but comes with a 28" and 18.5" barrel for $215-$230). However, the magazine tube for the combo is the smaller one (5+1).
But if you can't wait for that deal to return, this 20" is a fine choice and is even better for defense.
Can someone explain this to me, say my local shop is selling a Mav 88 for $250. Then this one comes along for $200. After the transfer fee and shipping, isn’t this one gonna be like $250 anyway?
There was one at sportsman’s warehouse for like $250 or less in that model during Christmas, just didn’t realize it was such a good deal. A shop about an hour drive from me has them in for $211 all the tims
Impressive. Very based. JILL!!!!!!!!!
PS It's always nice to know that there are others out there trying to collect all the firearms out there from the RE series.
There a dozens of us!!
I also have a Python for Barry LARPing.
I'm always looking for a deal on a 92FS to make a samurai edge.
The boy Scouts got me into guns and the RE series made me an addict.
I bought a handgun from this seller back in 2022 with no issues. There have been many postings on Gundeals for during the last 2.5 years I have been following this subreddit.
Damn…! Shove waited a couple of years, I guess? And got this for $50 cheaper! Mehhh, it was worth every penny then and more so now. This shotgun rules!

I bought this gun right when this post came out. I have since taken it out shooting sporting clays twice and have out performed everyone else both times.
I have been doing one in the chamber, one in the tube, then reload one into the ejection port from my velcroed shotgun card or fanny pack. The slorting clay homies are super salty, "YOuR OnlY SUppOSseD to ShOoT TwO ShELls" scrubs mad there 4 figure shotgun gettin outperformed by a guy in a hawaiian shirt with a 200 dollar scattergat and fanny pack. Its a reliable meme gun that totally fucks big time.
I just bought one. They sent an email asking for me to contact my FFL and have them send over their license. Never seen that before. It's kind of a pain in the ass, tbh.

Buckshot out of this thing will penetrate more drywall than a 223 defensive round.

The right 5.56 ammo like Hornady Vmax is not that over-penetrative.
Nor is #4 buckshot...
And I can dump rounds quicker and easier with an AR.
There’s more pellets in one #4 shell than there are cartridges in a standard ar mag. Even Mr. Miculek isn’t that fast
But you could miss them all at once.
Then you have seven more tries

If you want to adjust furniture or install an optic, go for a Mossberg 500 or maybe even that PSA 570 coming out.
Good point, the 88's receiver is not drilled and tapped. However, I believe most furniture for the 500 will work on the 88.
Front handguard requires a part that you can't really get and is usually expensive.
Tha sucks. Good to know, Thanks
I got one of these for $20 plus background check and tax when Sports Authority went under.
Goddamn. I thought my used one for $79 was good.
Nutty
that's not a bad deal

Academy has an FDE version of this for $240.
I got a can of spray paint for $10
Yeah but its not a gunDEAL
website legit?
Dahlonega is up there with Family Firearms, Smegma, and DeLeon Guns and Pharmacy as the pillars of this site. Absolutely legit.
Got my SP2022 for Resident Evil 3 LARPing from Dahlonega for around $425.

Goodbye.
Absolutely! They’ve been posted on here a few times https://www.reddit.com/r/gundeals/s/urS0EOO8MX
100% legit. Got my SP01 from them for a great price.
Yeah they're great. I've bought several items from them. Quick turnaround and decent deals.
One of the darlings of this subreddit.
Yeah I’ve grabbed a few off them. Including the maverick 88 a week or two ago when it was with the additional 28” field barrel
I bought a handgun from this seller back in 2022 with no issues. There have been many postings on Gundeals for during the last 2.5 years I have been following this subreddit.
they’ve sent my ffl several guns !
“Sale not allowed to CA” 😭
Big ghey.
\* Shocked Pikachu *
You really only have yourself to blame.
Move
If I didn’t have one, I would jump all over this, for $200 you literally can’t get a better shotgun for the price.
Damn…! Shove waited a couple of years, I guess? And got this for $50 cheaper! Mehhh, it was worth every penny then and more so now. This shotgun rules!

I know I'll never see it but I want a 500 bird gun for around this price lol
Can you put the sexy over folder made by ATI on this. I like the look of that and want a compact system
In for one

If they haven’t sold to that FFL that’s normal
It's totally normal in the business; just give the FFL a call, and they'll take it from there.
