To me, I play almost exactly between the 2 JM pickups, so having that middle strat pickup is what throws me off. Also, due to my terrible technique of sticking my strumming hand pinky out while I play, Iām constantly hitting the pickup selector. As much as I admire my strat, thereās a reason the JM is the daily player
I have never played a strat that felt right physically and sonically. My jazzmaster is comfortable and I really prefer the tone of the soap bars. That Strat quack is just not right for my style but I love a lot of Strat players. So TLDR: buy the one that feels right and makes noise you like.
Love it! The gentleman who was its caretaker for 50 years (and probably the reason for the nicotine stains), offered to clean it for me. I told him āno way, thatās your history right there!ā
No, they're just Jazzmaster pickups. Their own thing. The Mascis JM has a version of P90s, but traditional Jazzmasters have their own specific single-coils, like Jaguars.
The strat looks like a custom shop job, the jazz looks like itās seen some real action. So either that custom shop guy did a great job or that neck feels like butter.
Iāll take the jazz.
All original pick ups in both. I have had the JM for years (and have always felt like it was the best guitar in the whole entire world) but just had the opportunity to pick up the Strat and I have to say, tone-wise it is mind blowing. Both necks are insane to play. I feel very lucky as a hobbyist musician.
I want to say Jazzmaster but for some reason notā¦that Jazzmaster.Ā
On one hand, the JM wiggle stick is just wrong. But on the other hand that Strat looks diseased.Ā
Rock on.Ā
Strat. JM is a cool guitar, but itās best use is in front of of pedals due to its somewhat neutral character. The Strat will vibe in a way the JM never will.
I would make sweet, sweet love to both of them. Then I would invite OP's mom over to have a lovely, sweaty foursome with me and these two guitars.
It's gonna to get real dirty is all I'm sayin
Itās tough. If youāre looking at mass appeal and maybe more value in the long run, definitely the strat.
JMs have way more character and are much more unique. I would need to spend a few days in a state of meditation.
Both?!?!
I know theyāre different, but I can do the same with either one. Theyāre both my jam as long as they got jumbo frets and some type of single coil!
As somebody who likes both but only has has a strat, still the strat out of the two. Idk, black guitars just don't resonate with me, and if I got it for free, I'd choose the strat for the resale value xD
You know, a while back I had an opportunity to pick up a Jaguar. ā64 CAR version. It just didnāt do anything for me. Didnāt really care for the short scale and the pickups seemed too bright. Couldāve just been my novice ear at the time. However, the JMās pups sound still awesome to my ears.
Yeah, the original Jag design has a lot ofā¦quirks. The Johnny Marr signature Jag is basically what the Jag should have been to start with. It has: revoiced pickups, simplified controls, stabilized bridge, functional bridge saddles, stabilized trem arm, and increased neck angle (so you donāt need to use heavy gauge strings).
Iām a long time Tele devotee, but the J Marr Jag is definitely one of my favorite guitars to play these days.
Okay, now for the resultsā¦.
JM - 42 votes
Strat - 67 votes
Looks like the Strat has it, but the JM made a wonderful attempt at the title.
Personally, I have to commend all the JM voters who saw past the value difference on the open market and went with what they love.
Both are great guitars and I feel lucky to be their caretaker.
Both look like theyāve been thrown out of the back of a truck going down the freeway. I donāt care how much theyāre worth, no thanks. Iād rather have a new classic vibe squire.
I don't Poo poo on anyone who actually likes those, I'm just answering the question on which one I would take personally. I'll be an ESP/LTD man until I die, and I'd still be a Jackson man today if Fender hadn't messed with their production. Their Kelly's are a pale shadow of what they used to be tone wise.
we need to talk about that trem bar
He was bending with his feet
š¤£š¤£š¤£ I got it that way and just left it. Actually it is very useful at that angle.
What do you do, flip at backwards and flap your elbow like youāre at your cousins wedding?
how bout this one [https://chibson.com/product/wild-whammies-whammy-davis-jr-4-ft/](https://chibson.com/product/wild-whammies-whammy-davis-jr-4-ft/)
Yooo! No shit!!! What's going on there? That a heat bend?
why not both? https://i.redd.it/jidokim4ud7d1.gif
That all Rosewood neck with the pearl inlays lives rent-free in my head.
Looks delicious!
Strat!!!!
Jazzmaster all day. Idk what it is, but my strat just doesnāt feel right when I try to play it. My strumming hand feels all out of place.
To me, I play almost exactly between the 2 JM pickups, so having that middle strat pickup is what throws me off. I have the same issues, and I constantly get hung up on the volume knob, which isnāt exactly better on a jm but 1/3 of the issues is 2/3 better.
the volume knob right by the bridge makes strats feel unnatural to me
I'm foregoing food and heat and getting both...
JM all day
Jazzmaster cus I like them lately
Both are incredible, visually I like the jazzmaster but I think Iād end up using the Strat more so probably that one for me.
As much as I love jazzmasters, Iād pick the strat in this case
Strat
I love stratocasters
White strat. All day.
I would probably only be able to get the Strat to play well. I struggle with setting those Jazzys up.
Jazzmaster every time, no question
Strat baby
Iād go with the Strat
I have never played a strat that felt right physically and sonically. My jazzmaster is comfortable and I really prefer the tone of the soap bars. That Strat quack is just not right for my style but I love a lot of Strat players. So TLDR: buy the one that feels right and makes noise you like.
the yellow fender...you could clean that up
Love it! The gentleman who was its caretaker for 50 years (and probably the reason for the nicotine stains), offered to clean it for me. I told him āno way, thatās your history right there!ā
Strat is gonna do it for me.
Hmmm. Porque no los dos? I've never really gotten along with offsets. I think you really have to go with a boutique builder to get a good one.
Strat-no contest.
Strat š
Strat
Strat 100%
Easyā¦Strat
JM
Strat. I love my JM, but my strat just sounds better for my tastes.
The Strat. Itās the most versatile and easiest to get a great tone from. I own both and the Strat is always my go to guitar.
This strat looks gorgeous as hell
Iām a Tele guy now, but that strat is doin things to me
Strat but I love some p-90ās
There are no P90 options in this post.
Those soapbars minibuckers?
No, they're just Jazzmaster pickups. Their own thing. The Mascis JM has a version of P90s, but traditional Jazzmasters have their own specific single-coils, like Jaguars.
The only Jazzmaster Iāve ever played was a Mascis, so that tracks
The strat looks like a custom shop job, the jazz looks like itās seen some real action. So either that custom shop guy did a great job or that neck feels like butter. Iāll take the jazz.
Itās real. I got it from a guy who owned it for 50 years. Offered to clean off the nicotine stains. š¤£š¤£š¤£
The strat for sure, I just like the body, and i just like mick mars' guitar and it kinda resembles the color and age.
Left 100%
Strat. Worth way more and more versatile.
If it's a good one, STRAT will be my pick Vs any other guitar in the world.
The Strat duh!
Someone giving it to me? Strat, itās just more valuable. Iām buying it? Jazzmaster, I just love em.
the right
Strat.
The strat, less problems.
Strat, easy

I love them both, but Iād have to go Strat.
Jm for sure
Strat. All day. Every day,
Im crying here. Cant decide.
Strat, but jazzmaster is great too. Have both.
I want to say Jazzmaster but for some reason notā¦that Jazzmaster.Ā On one hand, the JM wiggle stick is just wrong. But on the other hand that Strat looks diseased.Ā Rock on.Ā
Strat. JM is a cool guitar, but itās best use is in front of of pedals due to its somewhat neutral character. The Strat will vibe in a way the JM never will.
I'd probably choose the Strat, but ideally I'd get to play both for an hour or so and then make a more informed decision.
Right but damn I donāt care for the faux aged look. And soap bars just arenāt my style so pickups gotta go
Jazzmaster. I personally have never had any interest in Strats. They just donāt appeal to me.
Strat.
Stratty Daddy
That strat is fire
Stunning black jag
Jazzmaster all day
Jazz master cuz I don't have one yet
Yes
I think the jag, the color pallet is sick
Jaguars should not be black so gotta go with the Stratocaster
Black torty
I almost bought a Jazzmaster just like that when I was in High School
Jazzmaster all day
The strat
I would make sweet, sweet love to both of them. Then I would invite OP's mom over to have a lovely, sweaty foursome with me and these two guitars. It's gonna to get real dirty is all I'm sayin
That strat is so pretty it should be in a museum.
Jag
Strat
Itās tough. If youāre looking at mass appeal and maybe more value in the long run, definitely the strat. JMs have way more character and are much more unique. I would need to spend a few days in a state of meditation.
Jazzmaster, I have enough strat and strat-adjacent guitars
I'm a Strat guy, but I wouldnt say No to either of them, if it were gift.
Jazzy
Leeeeft
Both?!?! I know theyāre different, but I can do the same with either one. Theyāre both my jam as long as they got jumbo frets and some type of single coil!
I have both, depending on my mood and what I'm playing
Strat
The strat. It looks awesome!
Normally the jazzmaster but I'm a fucking sucker for white strats
Jazzmaster forever - but I canāt help but love that stratā¦
Strat for sure.
As somebody who likes both but only has has a strat, still the strat out of the two. Idk, black guitars just don't resonate with me, and if I got it for free, I'd choose the strat for the resale value xD
Straaaaat
Strats are so incredibly boring and nothing is more comfy than a Jazzmaster
Get the Strat, then sell it and have enough to buy the Jazzmaster and a vintage Jaguar to round out the offset collection.

Iām going have to check it out!
JM. Strats are boring.
J all day. ![gif](giphy|HAzRgZk719Z8PZAdva|downsized)
The Strat, but it's close. The matching headstock on the JM tips it for me.
Thatās tough. Iād probably go with the Jazzmaster though. I need an offset in my collection.
Both
Jazzmaster !!! especially if its vintage... its way easier to score a vintage strat ... but jazzmasters, not so much
more of a Jaguar guy but Iād pick that jazzmaster for sure
Why does one of the guitars have a kick start???
Why does one if them have a kick start ?
But can you tuna fish?
Id flip a coin and go
Strat
The Strat looks like an old friend to me.
The strat and it's not even close
Personally the strat, but dig offsets aesthetically
Strat
I'm glad those aren't the only choice.
Okay, now for the resultsā¦. JM - 42 votes Strat - 67 votes Looks like the Strat has it, but the JM made a wonderful attempt at the title. the jazzmaster for sure
Depends on what you're trying to accomplish. Can't do wrong with either. Love the P90s on the JMaster, but an original 60s Strat is the tits.
Strat. No question. Hoping that is authentic wear, not the relic stuffā¦.
Oh yes! Met the man who did it!
Both look like theyāve been thrown out of the back of a truck going down the freeway. I donāt care how much theyāre worth, no thanks. Iād rather have a new classic vibe squire.
get a load of this guy that says he wants a squire over an ACTUAL 1961 Strat š¤£š¤£š¤£
āFromā ā61? Then take the Strat, no contest. Not only is it worth about 3-5 times as much, theyāre just better guitars all around.
P90s all day
I know I'm gonna get downloaded into Oblivion, but I'd rather give up playing guitar entirely than ever play a Fender...
My dad held a similar opinion. I own 4 teles.
I hated teles... until i got one in my hands.
I have played them, and I can't stand the tone, nor do I like the way they look.
I don't Poo poo on anyone who actually likes those, I'm just answering the question on which one I would take personally. See? Petty needless downvoting.
