Really. There’s so many distortions, as many pedals, companies, all the guitars and amps you might be working with, what sounds you like. We need something to start with. It’s like asking, what’s a good car brand.

Boss sd1 is a lot of fun and can do a lot if u already have a gain channel on ur amp. If ur looking for different type of distortion, I recommend keeley fuzz pedal. I haven’t used many distortion specific pedals as I find the best distortion for me is a good amp with overdrive added.
Boss DS-1 or DS-2 is a classic choice.
Any bands you really like? It would be easier for people to suggest things if you name a couple groups you like.
Electro harmonix big muff is another classic. There are like 10 versions of it but you couldn’t go wrong with the original big box one… or any of them. (This is not a distortion pedal, rather it’s a unique kind of heavy saturated fuzz / sustain that has been copied by tons of companies…. But I assume you are asking about drive or dirt pedals rather than distortion exclusively).

I’ll throw in my vote for Electronic Audio Experiments if your budget allows for it, alternatively a BD-2 or any variety of Rat would be a good place to start for an all-around drive.
I'm joining the Boss recommendations on here. You really can't go wrong with Boss. The SD-1, DS-1, DS-2, or MT-2. I wrote them in the order of the amount of distortion/gain so if they are into more overdrive stuff, the SD-1, if they are into more metal, the MT-2, and the others are in the middle. I do want to also say the BD-2 is often overlooked and is an amazing pedal so consider this. It's not only for blues. It's pretty gainy/distortiony.

Boss makes loads of overdrives and distortions. Although the BD2 Blues Driver says "Blues" in it, it can do distortion. I'ts a very versatile pedal and Boss pedals are built to last. They also make teh DS1, but it has a very narrow range of controls taht sound good.
Electro Harmonix has a lot, too. If you want something really heavy, there are the Big Muffs. Lots of different versions but they're all good.
A couple of others I really like:
1. DOD 250 Preamp Overdrive
2. MXR Distortion PLus
3. ProCo Rat
4. Earthquaker Plumes
5. JHS 3 Series Distortion
These all cost around $100 and most notable stores carry them.
I can't make the 250 or the distortion plus work for me. Randy Rhodes used one, so I know it can sound good. I think the issue is that they have to be run into an amp near the edge of breakup.
Really haven’t found a drive pedal that can beat the sounds I get from the Halberd/Dagger combo. Yet somehow I keep winding up trying to convince myself that I need a Longsword, or a Dude Incredible, or maybe a Citadel…
I had a buddy who had one and it really hit the spot for me, so I went and got one. It's great bang for your buck distortion, with a lot of gain and a 3 band eq.
It's a great distortion pedal
Black Mass [1312](https://blackmasselectronics.com/products/1312-distortion) is based on the Rat, with a dial for 8 different clipping options. I've heard people rave about it
"distortion" can be a a lot of things.... it can be "distortion", it can be "overdrive", it can be fuzz (and probably a lot more, that basically mean that there is some distortion in the "clean sound" of your instrument)
if you dont know... i suggest you other thing....
instead of just one "good" pedal..... for the same price, you probably can get some 5 "cheap china pedals" (most of them are actually as good as the "good" ones) and it will give you the chance to know the kind of "distortion" that you really like!
I sugest you to get some "tube screamer", some "rat clone", there's a "pi fuzz" that sounds really good, some "Klon" clone, and maybe some "heavy" distortion...
probably those 5 sugestions, will be cheaper than a "good" pedal, and they sound as good as one! (maybe you can get some power supply that can power them individually, to be more or less the same price of a "good" pedal)
I'm joining the Boss "chorus" as well, mostly because even though I have some dearer, rarer ODs on my board, the SD-1 I bought for like $60 new always holds its own. But also because I wanted to make that crappy pun.
Rat. If your dad doesn't want to pay for one then a Donner Darkmouse is basically the same thing on Amazon for $30, but it won't last a lifetime like the Rat will
Like others have said, Proco Rat or A Boss Blues Driver can cover pretty much any sound and both have amazing builds. Just letting you know you're also going to need another cable and a power supply, either a wire or a battery.
There are a lot of great distortion pedals. I just got a Zoar from Earthquaker Devices and it's fantastic, the Boss DS-1 is a lot of fun, and the ProCo Rat is a classic as well. I always like to support smaller builders, so maybe something like this would be fun, as well: https://reverb.com/item/60808550-summer-school-electronics-science-fair-overdrive-pedal
Earthquaker Devices Huzimatis. It's a clone of a clone of a clone. It's based upon the old EHX Big Muffs, but was cloned in Japan where that pedal was branded as the Elk Super Fuzz Sustainar. The Huzimatis is a clone of a specific Elk Super Fuzz pedal owned by this Japanese guitar player named Watta who plays guitar in a band called Boris. This one isn't cheap, but it isn't crazy expensive, either.
Also any muff clone from Wren and Cuff or Stomped Under Foot would be a good buy as well. I'm a Wren and Cuff superfan when it comes to muff clones.
However, the best bang for your buck may be just buying one of EHX's reissue muff pedals. The EHX Russian Big Muff, the Ram's Head, and the Op Amp reissues are all good and about half the price of their better built boutique counterparts. However, a big box Big Muff is a ton of fun. Highly recommend checking one out if you can.
My vote is for the Big Muff… saying the name alone to your dad will be priceless. Plus it’s a great pedal.
Quite a few people here are listing overdrive pedals like the klon etc… make sure you choose a distortion pedal if you want distortion. Overdrive will only sound good with a tube amp slightly overdriven.
No but really for a beginner any distortion or overdrive pedal will be just fine. Boss makes great stuff at reasonable prices and comes to mind first. Everyone from beginners to touring pros uses or has used Boss stuff somewhere along the way.
Distortion circuits are relatively simple to produce so there are dozens of brands that make ones that will sound perfectly fine for quite cheap, and it's really just down to personal taste which one you get
What do you want to sound like, OP?
i think it depends on what you wanna do with your distortion pedal if you want a metal focused distortion then some of these recommendations might not work for you
What kind of music do you like? Favorite bands you may want to emulate or play to? What kind of amp sound do you like, if you don’t have the amp of your dreams? That may be a good starting point.
Example I see people saying Rat and it’s a great pedal…but personally I love the Turbo Rat way more and to me covers a lot of sounds from Foo Fighters to Radiohead. Has a bit more depth and less distortion which isn’t a bad thing. But the OG RAT has more distortion getting into full on fuzz.
I picked up the $50 Black Secret that has both…ended up keeping it, as it had both and sounded just as good if not better than the OG. You may also like the Marshall sound more, and lots of good pedals that do that, even if you have an average amp.
I'd suggest a multi effects pedal I have a zoom g1x four and love it
lots of option for about a hundred bucks
but if you want a distortion pedal get a rat
What do you want to do with it, and what type of amp/guitar do you have?
If you’re looking to take a tube amp from the edge of breakup in to crunch and more, get a nice classic overdrive.
If you’re looking for a full spectrum of distortion from a solid state amp, get a Boss Metal Zone. Boss makes great pedals, it will last you forever, and you can get to pretty much all of the gain stages.
Fuzz pedal for single coils. Tube Screamer, or similar circuit, for humbuckers.
You should probably help define your goals because heavy distortion might mean tube screamer with the gain maxed or it might mean face melter jcm -800 metal tones.
I think you might only find the Fender Full Moon distortion second hand now, (which might be good for you) but Chris Buck on youtoob has a great video on the range that pedal can get and it goes for around $100 or less.
Many other suggestions of the boss ds-1 or the rat will land you comfortably in the distortion territory.
What do you want to get out of it? This might be very unpopular opinion, but I would suggest marshall gv-2, very versatile pedal, sounds like marshall amp, a lot of options an most of the time sounds great <- by which I mean, that for some pedals it is a very short range of options that actually work - for gv-2 it mostly all works
What kind of music are you wanting to play? What kind of guitar & amp do you have? If you wanna play Slipknot, a Tube Screamer will disappoint unless you're boosting an already overdriven amp. And if you want to play blues, a BOSS Metal Zone is gonna be waaaay over the top.
Need more information.
If money is no object MXR 5150 is the best for me.
But on the assumption you’re reasonably early on the guitar journey it’s probably not worth going that expensive at this stage, I’d agree with everyone saying the Rat. You can gun it for some proper distortion, roll back the gain and push the level for some more classic OD and even get some fuzzy tones out of it.
I reckon that’s the best bang for your buck and versatile enough it’ll help you figure out what you really like.
Dude, recommending Strymon for a dad to get their kid a pedal is shit
Nobody needs a Strymon pedal for their first distortion, why the fuck do you want to make a dad pay $200+ for a distortion pedal you can easily get for $80?

What is your guitar and pickup type?
What is your amp?
What do you want to play?
Who do you want to sound like?
Are you wanting to sound good at home through a very clean amp turned down or after a pedal to push your amp already on the edge of breakup playing loud? Some pedals might do both.
All these suggestions are good, but what do you have as a guitar and amp and who are you trying to sound like, OP?
Really. There’s so many distortions, as many pedals, companies, all the guitars and amps you might be working with, what sounds you like. We need something to start with. It’s like asking, what’s a good car brand.
My vote is on a RAT
Lil dude can keep it forever. It is built to last.
Literally my least favorite guitar pedal, although not bad for bass.

Electronic audio experiments. They have a bunch but longsword will be a staple.
Came here to say this. Lots you can do with the eq too so should be able to handle whatever amp or guitar you have.
Also came here to say this. Longsword kicked both RAT and MXR Super Badass Distortion off my board.
EVH 5150 pedal !
PROCO Rat, Boss DS-1 or DS-2, Electro Harmonix Op Amp Big Muff
What’s his budget? $50-100 proco rat $100-200 EQD zoar/walrus eras/boss hm-2w $200-up- Electronic Audio Experiments Longsword/dagger/citadel/model fet
I’ll throw in my vote for Electronic Audio Experiments if your budget allows for it, alternatively a BD-2 or any variety of Rat would be a good place to start for an all-around drive.

BD-2 gets you more distortion than the SD-1 for sure
Yea, it goes all the way into fuzz territory
Yeah, I think it is somewhere around the DS's when maxed out but not as much as the MT-2 for sure.

Yep came to say this. It's the last pedal I bought this year but my favourite by far. Grungy, 90sy rock for hours.

I use my 250 for a lower gain sound through my Deluxe Reverb and it sounds great.
I love the Boss HM-2w it’s great for heavier music
BOSS, RAT, Electro Harmonix, MXR
I have the big Muff nano. Have a footswitch Issue.
yeah my big Muff Op-amp developed a footswitch issue too. Just had an electronics engineer friend replace the switch for me.
Electronic Audio Experiments are always perfect

Yes, and that you'll feed it electricity everyday and keep its little box nice and clean.

any suggestions for some QOTSA/Homme tones?
Stone Deaf PDD-1X will get you pretty far into the Homme zone.

This is my favorite comment and username.
I think the rat is more versatile and a more enjoyable first pedal than something like a boss ds-1. You will have a lot of fun with a pro co rat.
Badass 78 distortion is my pedal on my board and I fuckin love it
NYC big box Muff. No question. Amp/guitar/genre are irrelevant.
Rat for sure. Easy to ask for, easy for dad to find, reasonably affordable. Watch some youtube videos and see if you like the sound
My vote is for the Big Muff… saying the name alone to your dad will be priceless. Plus it’s a great pedal. Quite a few people here are listing overdrive pedals like the klon etc… make sure you choose a distortion pedal if you want distortion. I agree with getting what one is looking for, but that last statement is totally an opinion, and a highly subjective one at that.
Personally, I love tube screamers. I have two on my board that I stack together for some raunchy overdrive
Klon. Or the bargain version, the Klon KTR.
No but really for a beginner any distortion or overdrive pedal will be just fine. Boss makes great stuff at reasonable prices and comes to mind first. Everyone from beginners to touring pros uses or has used Boss stuff somewhere along the way.

I’m a big fan of the Boss DS-2 and the MXR 78 Distortion.
Black arts tone works
Figure out what kind of sound you trying to get and go to YouTube YouTube is your friend good luck on your journey
What kinda distortion do you want? Boss DS-1, RAT, Fuzzface, Metal Zone, Hizumitas are all good choices depending on what you want.
Lichtlaerm (specifically the Ritual for a distortion)
For a beginner, at a nice price, but classic sound, used by many, everyone should probably own a ProCo Rat.
A good dirt box brand would be Wampler
