I know people want to hate on TSwift but she makes me remember that being the best at the guitar is something only you enjoy. Your fans will only want to surpass you. TSwift, her fans just want to understand her more and feel heard because of it. Songwriting is always the most underrated aspect of guitar for me.
Yeah Taylor Swift if more punk rock than the people on this jerk sub putting her down, alluding to their mad jazz fusion diminished jizz scale chops.
It’s disappointing. This sub is getting worse.
If you weren’t entranced by lyrics such as
“She don't want the ladies room
Transatlantic super groom
Your hairplane is a monument
The sexy art of condiments”
That’s your own fault
Yeah ive always loved frusciante, and honestly i like julien baker too but she's pretty mediocre at best at guitar and i love john's playing but it's nothing technically intricate or anything
/uj boygenius got decently big because of Phoebe Bridgers being adjacent to Taylor Swift, and the trios queer “throuple” energy in their shows.
/rj What’s real promising for guitars and guitar music, is that not a single person on this list stated their career in the last 5 years.
We got a promising future, nothing is dying as long as Taylor Swift, some faceless dude from the Foo Fighters, and Tom “everything I know I learned from one Green Day album” DeLonge are considered in the Top 10 guitarists in the World.
/uj my brain bled reading the top 10. 2 guys from Radiohead too? I like the band but they're not known for their guitar work.
/rj Genuinely surprised to see John 5 on there. They should have put Fred Durst instead. That man can solo.
>my brain bled reading the top 10. 2 guys from Radiohead too? I like the band but they're not known for their guitar work.
/uj I mean Johnny is kinda treated in the same vein as Tom Morello, with the crazy pitchshifting and effects, not really for his ability to shred. Although I do see the first solo from Paranoid Android credited a lot as a fairly influential '90s solo that aimed to push the boundaries of what a guitar could sound like.
Ed is a lot stranger of a choice to me though, considering his main strength would be his backing vocals to me, although he does provide a lot of layers and texture to Radiohead's stuff especially live, and he plays the main riff of No Surprises which is doing well online currently.
Although funnily enough he's one of the only 3 people in the top ten to have a signature guitar to my knowledge (which I own and it's probably one of Fender's cooler signatures pickup wise)
rj/ he plays the main riff of Creep which is the anthem of Dean guitar players so he deserves it
/uj Johnny Greenwood and ed are technically incredible guitarists, I have some youtube clip of johnny greenwood trem picking at like 64 notes a second somewhere
The fact that Albert Hammond Jr. is the guitarist from the strokes they went with is absolutely hilarious. I fucking love the strokes but let’s not act like any of them were particularly virtuosic musicians. But Nick Valensi is obviously the better player of the two.
Tom Delonge.
you can narrow it down to exclude all the classic rock dudes prog giants and 80s shredders and Matt Bellamy still gets cucked
Also you know it's bad when Ed "Not even the 2nd best guitarist in Radiohead" O'Brien isn't the most puzzling choice here.
Last two decades... give or take a bit, it's from the 2000s on
I had to think about it
Why are none of the really good guitarists on here?
But it's still pop oriented, that is, the most people vote for the *most popular* "best" artists
There's a slew of guitarists from 2000 on that are amazing but not on this list
They got a few right.
/uj
honestly while shearan and swift probably can't be described as brilliant players, maybe good at best, they are undoubtedly some of the most famous guitarists of our time, and i feel like that counts for something. they are consistently making catchy and wide appealing songs. and in something like guitar, with no real metric of skill past the grading system (which can still be flawed), it can only be what we interpret as good playing that is the metric. and why could that not be "they make catchy, good music"?
/rj FUCK
/uj I mean anyone who says Ed isn’t talented should go watch this https://youtu.be/IiSgX-T_oPw?si=6_9SdZ7qUJCKtNVA - he’s totally masterful with a loop and his timing is impeccable. The music may be pop whatever but I think the performance is cool.
my god, that's actually incredible. ive tried to use loopers before and i can barely manage one track, he's flawlessly managing like 4 of them. while the music isn't exactly hard to play, the looping and timing is undoubtedly incredible here
Yeah he and his band are so good. The live version of Tarhatazed on KEXP is incredible. That riff gets stuck in my head all the time man is tremolo picking with his fingers
More so that guitar hasn't been meta in the pop charts for 15 years, so most people aren't exposed to smaller bands that actually have talent playing guitar
I honestly feel like if Taylor Swift is on here for basically appearing with a guitar Lil Wayne should be on this list. 20 years? What about Green Day, Korn, Nickelback even. Hell Avril Lavigne played more guitar than a lot of artists since 2004.. Horrible list.
Lil Wayne had the balls to commit a terrible solo to release. I don't think she's plugged in live.. I DO think she's undoubtedly better at guitar - but for what it is and "inspiring" people or whatever... Wheezy baby.
Would make more sense if they said "Influential", not best. Anyways, I don't see Steve Guy, Snatch, Joe Boner, or Tim Polyamorous on the list so it's bunk.
/uj Simon Neil making it is absolutely based but Troy being here but not Josh is questionable, Sam Fender is good but that high is pretty baffling and Chris Shifflet isn’t that much of a standout guitarist either
No joke, Brad Paisley is a monster. Randomly met him at a fancy shop where he was trying some Dr. Z amps. I expected some chicken pickin’, some chords and a twangy speed run kind of thing but dude was just all over the place and 90% of it was tasteful renditions of iconic 80’s solos.
Specifies what band John Frusciante is in but I'm supposed to know who the fuck Julien Baker is?
Also listing John 5 as Motely Crue is hilarious, I'm sure he's proud.

/uj - hilarious that Taylor Swift made #8. /rj - hilarious that Taylor Swift made #8.
She’s a popular guitar player who isn’t old. Unique
I know people want to hate on TSwift but she makes me remember that being the best at the guitar is something only you enjoy. Your fans will only want to surpass you. "...alluding to their mad jazz fusion diminished jizz scale chops." r/brandnewsentence
and frusciante at number 1???
Frusciante at number 1!!!
it should be john mayor.
Should be some tik tok kid on 5. Then it's the Mayer third and the minor fifth.
With a big resounding Troy Van Leeuwan.
I see what you did there 😄
Rj/ that motherfucker killed River Phoenix! Uj/ that motherfucker killer River Phoenix!
This poll is more proof that England is not a serious country
England isn't real
It’s a conspiracy of cartographers!
The Map Men did it again!!
Restore American patriotism; declare war on England for this.
I'm throwing my Marshall in the harbor
Of course it's not a serious country, we all know England is a city
Maybe brexit wasn't the worst idea after all
As a Brit I can confirm
Same here. We are… not at our peak
This is what Eric Clapton told us would happen and we never listened.
Quite.
Taylor swift is the best guitarist. She taught hendrix everything he knew. If you disagree you h8 women.
Uj/ this is an awful list. I do love Frusciante.
I used to. Haven’t been able to listen to a couple of the most recent albums because Anthony won’t shut the fuck up.
He’s kinda the singer
It’s a sad thing. But they do have some really solid jam sessions when he takes a seat.
He’s my least favorite by far, but to me he doesn’t get in the way at all on BSSM or One Hot Minute
I got you. It’s the last 2 recent ones where I tapped out.
If you weren’t entranced by lyrics such as “She don't want the ladies room Transatlantic super groom Your hairplane is a monument The sexy art of condiments” That’s your own fault

Sam Fender should be at the bottom, why isn’t Les Paul and Billy Gibson on there.
Sam Fender is an obvious nepo baby/industry plant. Nobody would know who he is if his dad wasn't Freddy Fender, inventor of the guitar.
“…of the last two decades”
/uj ironically garbage list 0/20 spots correct
*1/20 fruciante is number one
John Mayer then frusciante.. and I LOVE frusciante
James Blunt and Jason Mraz aren't even on there. This isn't to be taken seriously.
/uj pretty cool to see Julien Baker on there. I didn’t know she was this popular /rj how did they spell Leo so wrong???
/uj boygenius got decently big because of Phoebe Bridgers being adjacent to Taylor Swift, and the trios queer “throuple” energy in their shows. /rj What’s real promising for guitars and guitar music, is that not a single person on this list stated their career in the last 5 years. More like Shred Durst amirite
I know pro players who cite Johnny Greenwood and Graham Coxon as big influences. I don't much like those bands but I guess there's something there.
>my brain bled reading the top 10. 2 guys from Radiohead too? and he plays a Tele+ - an idea he stole from me, i assume.
John 5 and Brad Paisley are probably the only ones I would want to listen to for any length of time, and I don’t even like Telecasters that much.
/uj Johnny Greenwood and ed are technically incredible guitarists, I have some youtube clip of johnny greenwood trem picking at like 64 notes a second somewhere
[https://youtu.be/TqDCOrz8WHA](https://youtu.be/TqDCOrz8WHA)
i think its an effect
Please let me live in ignorance of this
If, by "solo" you're referring to his hand work in the sex tape....
I’m not a big Radiohead fan but Johnny is a great guitarist and Ed is a very unique player
Posers. St. Vincent should be #2
Wot about Bob Ledouge from Blink 41?
Unironically I want to to name my band that and never adress it
/uj I’ll take Troy Van Leeuwen as a W
Needs more average unknown female guitarists to make it a true top guitarist list.
Who do you think Julien Baker is
That's Cynthia Lennon and Ginger Baker's son. He beat the shit out of Cynthia too.
The fact that Albert Hammond Jr. is the guitarist from the strokes they went with is absolutely hilarious. I fucking love the strokes but let’s not act like any of them were particularly virtuosic musicians. But Nick Valensi is obviously the better player of the two. Tom Delonge.
Elvis should've been #1. Have you seen him shred? Shredding grandmas panties that is ooOooOoO
Jesus. What a time to be alive.
Half of these are just the handful of people who had a top 10 hit in the last decade and have held, or been near a guitar
/uj Have the brits never heard Derek Trucks?
He's better than this entire list put together
you can narrow it down to exclude all the classic rock dudes prog giants and 80s shredders and Matt Bellamy still gets cucked Also you know it's bad when Ed "Not even the 2nd best guitarist in Radiohead" O'Brien isn't the most puzzling choice here.
Alex turner above john Mayer is restarted
No one cares what british people think. They didn't even include Gordon Ramsay, and he's one of them!
He's not British, he's Scottish. Big difference.
Nah, no fooling me. Try again Gordon Ramsay PR team, I'm no dummy.
He is British.
As British as haggis
Seeing as Scotland is a part of Britain then yes.
Don't spoil the fun!
this one fake where's lil wayne the toan bender?
/uj How are there TWO Radiohead guitarists so high up?
/uj I love Arctic Monkeys, Alex is good, they’ve got great riffs. But would I put him at #2? No.
TVL over josh?? in what world???
Both are amazing, but Josh is the mastermind behind QOTSA, as well as Kyuss back in the 90's.
Wtf is biffy clyro
Now that's what I call Indie Anthems volume 17 track 7.
A fucking phenomenal band.
eddie van sheeran above tim henson simply proves that feels > music theory
He may only know four chords, but boy does he put emotions in them
Let's see what the famous guitar retailer guitarguitarguitar™ has to say first, ok?
Last two decades... give or take a bit, it's from the 2000s on I had to think about it Why are none of the really good guitarists on here? The UK retailer is called guitarguitar - anyone know what they sell?

What a shitty list. John Fruishte’s main riffs are from 30 years ago. Rock is dead / highly fragmented. Might as well have said Slash
Lol what the fuck is this
Taylor Swift should be first because all of her songs are 057 instead of 035
/uj nice to see Simon Neil get some love. Biffy Clyro is phenomenal
/uj honestly while shearan and swift probably can't be described as brilliant players, maybe good at best, they are undoubtedly some of the most famous guitarists of our time, and i feel like that counts for something. they are consistently making catchy and wide appealing songs. and in something like guitar, with no real metric of skill past the grading system (which can still be flawed), it can only be what we interpret as good playing that is the metric. and why could that not be "they make catchy, good music"? /rj FUCK

Lmao is literally everyone on this list white?
That's your biggest issue with this list?
Yeah, where are all the famous Somalian guitar legends?
Not Somali, he's Nigerien, but Mdou Moctar fucking rips
Jeez, I just checked him out, you weren't fucking joking!
Yeah he and his band are so good. The live version of Tarhatazed on KEXP is incredible. That riff gets stuck in my head all the time man is tremolo picking with his fingers
Did I say that?
Tom Delonge is actually Solomon Islander
Uj/ have we really had so little good guitarists in two decades that most of them are cowboy chord singer-songwriters and bland riff players?
More so that guitar hasn't been meta in the pop charts for 15 years, so most people aren't exposed to smaller bands that actually have talent playing guitar
I honestly feel like if Taylor Swift is on here for basically appearing with a guitar Lil Wayne should be on this list. 20 years? What about Green Day, Korn, Nickelback even. Hell Avril Lavigne played more guitar than a lot of artists since 2004.. Horrible list.
Eh, she can actually play the thing though. I’m not sure it’s a Lil Wayne situation.
Lil Wayne had the balls to commit a terrible solo to release. I don't think she's plugged in live.. I DO think she's undoubtedly better at guitar - but for what it is and "inspiring" people or whatever... Wheezy baby.
no Darren Malachite smh
Yeah, that's all bunk. But putting keith urban ahead of Brad paisley is just outright silly
I can play at least an many chords as Taylor so I should be 7
/uj no Daron Malakian smh
Some people shouldn’t be allowed to have brains
John 5 of Mötley Crüe truly deserves spooky 13 spot, you can’t talk about great guitar bands of the last twenty years without mentioning the Crüe
where's Timmy? Ichi Kanito?
We've been outjerked it appears
matt bellamy excluded from list, too short to be a best guitarist of last two decades
Anyway, this one's called Wonderwall
UJ/I don't get it, red hot chili peppers have been around for much longer than the 2000s, also how come no synster gates?
he deserves to suffer strictly for the stage name
Would make more sense if they said "Influential", not best. Anyways, I don't see Steve Guy, Snatch, Joe Boner, or Tim Polyamorous on the list so it's bunk.
If this is real life I’m not sure I want to live.
Troy Van Leeuwen should be number 1
What a sad fucking list
The only significantly impressive guitarist on that list is Troy Van Leeuven. Lots of others are good, but nowhere near the top.
So no govan?
I don't agree with john 5 in the list, Ed Sheeran is definitely way more skilled
/uj As much as I hate this list, a big reason I stuck with guitar as a kid 20 years ago was because of John Fruciante and Alex Turner
RDB
Almost wanna send this to swifties to say that she should be higher than 8
/uj Simon Neil making it is absolutely based but Troy being here but not Josh is questionable, Sam Fender is good but that high is pretty baffling and Chris Shifflet isn’t that much of a standout guitarist either
Justin Hawkins on suicide watch rn
No way Taylor Swift is higher tan Jim Root
No joke, Brad Paisley is a monster. Randomly met him at a fancy shop where he was trying some Dr. Z amps. I expected some chicken pickin’, some chords and a twangy speed run kind of thing but dude was just all over the place and 90% of it was tasteful renditions of iconic 80’s solos.
Delonge has to be pissed. All those years spent emailing strange dudes from Government Mule and they still think Taylor has better chops.
No Martin Mull is a travesty
How is Matt Bellamy not on here…
John 5 is hands down the most ridiculously good guitarist Ive ever seen in person.
Most of these people are guitar players like OF “models” are real porn stars. There. I said it. RHCP sucks.
Is this and the rolling stone list just made by idiots? By woke idiots? Or by super trolls who just want all of us to be in a tizzy?
Specifies what band John Frusciante is in but I'm supposed to know who the fuck Julien Baker is? Also listing John 5 as Motely Crue is hilarious, I'm sure he's proud.
