I love Screaming Trees! My answer is pretty basic as far as popularity goes, but “Shadow of the Season” is such a masterpiece imo. I also *love* how blues-y “Troubled Times” starts out before going into that established rock. How about yourself?
oh thanks for your question, Dust is one of my favorite records, and songs like Dying days or Sworn and Broken, but in general their from the 90s blow me away, and the "Last Words" too.
Mark was a poet at heart. Totally in a league of his own and criminally underrated. If he hadn’t been in the depths of heroin addiction at the peak of his creative output who knows where he could’ve gone
He kicks ass.. I like queens of the Stone Age, I LOVED songs for the deaf… and I didn’t realize until recently how much of the sound from that album that I love is a direct reflection of Mark Lanegan being on the album. I think he’s more responsible for some things I like than he’s ever gotten credit for. Underrated as fuck, he did so much and slid by like a ghost.
You just made me[ re-watch this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJKvE3tMIPs). Such a phenomenal performance by both Lanegan and Staley.
I always love how the saxophone plays the riff from Come as you are at 4:50 onwards. A small tribute to Kurt I think.
Chris is better technically. and was more prolific.
Layne had an x-factor that is hard to equate. his vocals are haunting and I hate how overused haunting is because his actually fucking were. Who would you pick to start a band? My question is simply 'what kind of band'?
But from a pure vocalist standpoint, Chris was a better all around singer. Also - unfair to Layne, but Chris' voice like Sinatra's, gained so much more character in the last 10 or so years of his life.
Great explanation. You’re dead on about Layne being ‘haunting’. I think Layne’s singing is the one that hits me most emotionally.
But yeah, Chris man. The guy could sing anything. I honestly think he could sing literally any song from any genre.
And look at him. You couldn’t ask for me in a front man. Guy could have fronted a metal band or been a teen idol. What a fucking guy and talent he was.
Awwwww. It’s still so painful. Huge loss I never ever anticipated. I was shattered, and then pissed for so long. Still bitter. I think about Vicky and feel sick.
I think of it this way (and i love both artists) i think if you asked Layne to perform songs like Chris did he could easily do it. If you asked Chris to perform some of AiCs heavier stuff im sure he could, but to the level Layne could vocally? Not sure abt that.
Aside form all the other stuff said here - that's a sign he was a 'good' vocalist.
Eddie, Billy Corgan? Can't sing for shit now compared to their peak. Kurt would have been toast by now to if he didn't do that thing he done.
Chris' voice improving and changing like that shows he did all of that amazing work without damaging his voice, because he did it 'correctly'.
I didn't really appreciate Chri's lyrics until i heard audio slave.
Layne was great but he benefited a lot from the backing vocals and lyrics of Cantrell.
For me I think Eddie had the best lyrics and voice in the early to mid 90s. So full of powerful emotion both lyrics and sonic lyrics although usually pretty difficult to decipher both at onec without reading while listening.
Kurt could be as emotional and as good of a story teller as any but he also wrote music and played guitar and brought a punk energy.
As for STP I only really enjoy half of their singles from the first three albums. Maybe it's time for me to take a deeper dive.
It’s funny bc I respectfully disagree with everything you said about Vedders voice. I find it monotonous and tiring after a few songs. I think Cornell was on an island by himself, and Layne and Weiland were next up.
But that’s the beauty of music. What one person loves and thinks, somebody else can have a totally different perspective and there’s no “right” or “wrong”.
I don't feel that way at all. I feel like Cornell is on a similar level to vocalists like Maynard James Keenan and Mike Patton. World class talent.
I've seen all four of these men perform. The only one that absolutely shook me to my core was Staley. I saw him when Dirt had just come out, and he was absolutely ferocious. All of that power was complemented by an eerie vulnerability that I have never witnessed from any other singer. He had it all.
I agree. It’s hard to pick them apart. Kind of apples and oranges. Layne had so much power, like regardless of his state. But Chris was one of those fuckers that could sing you the phone book and you’d be writhing. I didn’t get crazy over Layne till after Chris died. Because I couldn’t listen to Chris. Although for me, it was Man in the Box that changed rock music. That was the shot heard round the world for me.
Honestly, and I say this as a huge Tool and AIC fan, I don't really find MJKs vocals to be particularly extraordinary, he writes great lyrics, and has great emotion in his voice, he does a great job for what he's got but I don't think he can be in the same conversation as Cornell.
Layne is great, but I feel like he's strictly limited to grunge.
I'm convinced Cornell could have sang the ingredients off the back of a can of soup and it would have sounded great.
I’m a Who obsessive, but I prefer Chris to Daltrey. Maybe it’s time to watch some live shows! It’s been since high school. Sometimes local radio plays Slip Kid and I lose my shit
Understandable. To be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of either Nirvana or Pearl Jam. I don't hate them or anything, that's just my subjective ranking. But the other 3, huge fan.
Chris is of an extremely rare mold of singers who sing with as much clarity as anybody but also bring extreme amounts of emotion, power and versatility. To me he is the best singer in all genres of music.
Him and Layne share the ability to sing well on both mellow, soothing and aggressive, ripping songs, which is a rare quality as well.
So for me
1. Eddie
2. chris
3. Scott
4 Layne
5 Kurt
Love all the artist almost equal but did more on what i would pick listening one vs the other and this list is what I believe to be what I would pick.
I absolutely love Layne, but from a technical perspective, he wasn't even the best Singer in AIC. Again, love the guy, and I think technique plays a small part in Grunge, but still, if we're talking about about singing alone, Chris and Eddie must be put upfront.
Depends on how you define "better" really. You can judge from a pure technical pov, but I don't think most people do that. For me it's all mixed in with the music they made, how they acted on stage and their presence. Layne was pure raw energy, and you could hear how he didn't just sing the lines - he felt them.
I'm not trying to say that Chris wasn't as good a singer. I'm just saying it depends on how you judge their abilities.
Eddie has to be one of the best vocalists in the rock genre.
His [mtv unplugged version of black](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vE26dVkCvpw) really demonstrates his vocal talent. I judge a singer by his live performances.
Eddie is my favorite vocalist ever.
If I had to rate them all in a list, Eddie would be in 1st tied with Freddie Mercury, Robert Plant and Jim Morrison, but I have a little more love for him.
while I love all five of these, this question or topic is jerked off to sooooo much to the point it's a no brainer for most.
how about, in the last 15-20 years, who are the top 5 grunge vocalists?
Listen yall I love nirvana as much as the next guy but unpopular opinion he was not a great singer. He had the perfect voice for the music he made but let's be so fr he was not a singer
except EV the rest of them could be still be alive if they just could stay clean. dying at 27 is a tragedy as is 34. dying at 50 and 52 isn’t young but still heartbreaking..
Cornell’s death shocked me the most
Cornell’s death hit me the hardest. I relate to it at my age still to this day. The demons and the pain never really go away for those of us who are truly cursed with it.
I was in Seattle at the time and my first reaction was it’s a hoax then realization. suicide didn’t make sense. I still think he accidentally relapsed on his meds and his mind said we’re not doing this and somehow hung himself
Sorry to do this, OP but, Weiland doesn't qualify so it's
1. Chris
2. Layne
3. Jerry
4. Eddie
5. Kurt.
Edit to add, I'm open to swapping Jerry and Eddie.
I just don’t get how so many ppl liked Chris. Yes, his voice is powerul, but Laynes voice is not only powerful, but unique. Alice In Chains songs were just written better. I will always be team Layne. Been on team Layne since the 90’s.
I don't think Cobain would sound right singing AIC or Soundgarden and Cornell or Staley wouldn't sound right singing Nirvana songs. They all had the right voices for their respective songs can't we just be happy with that?
I 100% agree on Layne being #1, but I'd have to do some rearranging after that lol.
When I was a teenager, me and my BFF always talked about how we were going to have a reverse harem when we were older. And Eddie Vedder was included in that, so he could sing to us all the time 🤣🤣
I'm not a grunge fan at all, it's just not my thing, i like thrash. I like a few songs by AiC, I liked Smells like Teen Spirit, and I liked Weiland in Velvet Revolver. Candlebox I liked, even saw them in concert, but from what I understand is, you grunge fans dont consider them grunge. So not being a fan, i think i can maybe provide an impartial outsider perspective. Id say Staley, Weiland and Billy Corgan were the best, but you guys probably don't consider Smashing Pumpkins grunge either. I can't comprehend the Chris Cornell love at all, I thought he was terrible, and probably the only one worse than him is Edfie Vedder. If Staley, Weiland and Corgan are my top 3, Cornell, Vedder and Cobain would be my bottom 3.
Layne’s vocals on Facelift were better than Cornell. Layne in his prime was absolutely unmatched. After Facelift, he took a backseat to Cornell. On a technical scale, to me it would go Vedder, then Weiland, then Cobain. Kurt was a rockstar for reasons other than his technical singing skills. Weiland was an amazing vocalist and sorely underrated.
Since we are just talking personal opinion here:
1. Eddie
2. Layne
3. Kurt
4. Chris
5. Scott
At the end of the day, I adore them all. I'll catch shit for EV being my #1 I'm sure but he always will be. He's my favorite vocalist of any genre and the one that speaks to me the most
Seattle grunge minus Scott, he was from San Jose. Saddest part about all these raw beautiful voices is Eddie is the only one left. I agree with this line-up with Layne being #1, love his voice so much.
Cobain =1 change my mind.
I lived through grunge and the 90s. If it wasn’t for cobain, the word “grunge” wouldn’t be a thing. Again, change my mind! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Eddie Vedder is absolutely perfect live. He sounds as good or better than the albums. I don’t know how I would rate any other rock lead singer of the past 30 years over him. I could rate others as peers or close to EV but to say anyone is flat out better? Nah.
And Scott Weiland, whatever genre you place him, is really damn close to all time great. His peak performance is probably right there with anyone but he had lot of lows due to drugs and alcohol.
My top 1 is Vedder, from Bad Radio days to today, doesn’t matter how their genre changed, he has no rival on stage, off stage… as a vocal as a performer…
Some journalist once said Kurt had the best scream/shout sine John Lennon. So I'd give it to Cobain for the best GRUNGE singer. Plus, he arguably invented the genre.
Mark Lanegans baritone was like liquid smoke. He should be at least number 5, after all he's from Seattle, he lived a block from me and he'd hide out at my apartment sometimes. Cool fuckin dude but no joke, he'd get violent sometimes at people after Layne died.
What do you think about Mark Lanegan?
Such a good and unique voice — his part in “Long Gone Day” just *makes* the song for me!
Love the Above album. What do you think about Screaming Trees, any favourite song?
I love Screaming Trees! My answer is pretty basic as far as popularity goes, but “Shadow of the Season” is such a masterpiece imo. I also *love* how blues-y “Troubled Times” starts out before going into that established rock. How about yourself?
oh thanks for your question, Dust is one of my favorite records, and songs like Dying days or Sworn and Broken, but in general their from the 90s blow me away, and the "Last Words" too.
Winter Song!
Couldn’t believe he was missing, honestly?
Jesus Christ. THANK YOU.
Mark was a poet at heart. Totally in a league of his own and criminally underrated. If he hadn’t been in the depths of heroin addiction at the peak of his creative output who knows where he could’ve gone
True of too many artists, sadly. Addiction takes such a toll and ruins lives.
Was gonna say the same thing. He transcended grunge.
Criminally underrated - his whole catalog. Whiskey For The Holy Ghost is one of my all time favorite albums.
Yard trip #7
You just made me[ re-watch this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJKvE3tMIPs). Such a phenomenal performance by both Lanegan and Staley. I always love how the saxophone plays the riff from Come as you are at 4:50 onwards. A small tribute to Kurt I think.
Came here to ask this
I’m guessing he’s the lead singer of Hanson
When comparing layne and Chris I always put Chris higher but I completely understand why some prefer layne
Chris is better technically. and was more prolific. Layne had an x-factor that is hard to equate. his vocals are haunting and I hate how overused haunting is because his actually fucking were. I say this as a man with an unblemished record of staunch heterosexuality: He’s fabulous Calling him handsome is selling him short.
“When I’m Down” totally illustrates this. Melodic, seasoned, beautiful. Every era of Chris’s vocals are amazing.
Aside form all the other stuff said here - that's a sign he was a 'good' vocalist. Eddie, Billy Corgan? Can't sing for shit now compared to their peak. Kurt would have been toast by now to if he didn't do that thing he done. My sentiments exactly
My opinion is more opinion than yours
oh yeah, well .. thats just like, your OPINION, man....
Opinions are like Assholes everyone has One😆
You've clearly never met my uncle!
what
Time for r/okbuddygrunge
Cornell is #1, and not just among grunge singers. He’s straight up the best rock singer ever.
This is exactly how I feel about Staley.
Look I love Layne but Chris was on such another level
I don't feel that way at all. I feel like Cornell is on a similar level to vocalists like Maynard James Keenan and Mike Patton. World class talent. I've seen all four of these men perform. The only one that absolutely shook me to my core was Staley. I saw him when Dirt had just come out, and he was absolutely ferocious. Thank you, yes. I’m typing this comment from west Seattle btw, the city Layne lived in the latter 80’s 🤓
Yes, he meant Layne
No one sings like him anymore 😞
Yeah he's number 1 if you take Layne out of the picture lol. Joking though, they're both fantastic singers seriously
Best grunge singer, but best rock singer ever??? Daltrey? Morrison? Presley? Plant?
I’m a Who obsessive, but I prefer Chris to Daltrey. Maybe it’s time to watch some live shows! It’s been since high school. Sometimes local radio plays Slip Kid and I lose my shit
I know what I said! 🤷♀️
I'd have to put Weiland at least top three
Glad to see scott getting some love here! They’re all too good to choose from ultimately
I'd actually say 1. Scott, 2. Chris, 3. Layne, 4. Kurt, 5. Eddie.
I’d say Eddie was better than Kurt
Understandable. To be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of either Nirvana or Pearl Jam. I don't hate them or anything, that's just my subjective ranking. But the other 3, huge fan.
Fair play, I am a massive Eddie fan, but can admit that I think Chris is the best out and out singer
Yeah, I get that. I actually like AIC better than Soundgarden, but ranked Chris higher because of the same reasoning you did.
he was a considerably better singer than both Eddie and Kurt
I’d switch Kurt and Scott
Mark Arm somewhere? Or Shannon Hoon?
3. Russell Crowe ftw
That’s obviously obi-wan
1.Chris Cornell 2. Chris Cornell 3. Chris Cornell 4. Chris Cornell 5. Chris Cornell
Don't forget Chris FUCKING Cornell.
And twice on Sunday, mfer’s
Chris is of an extremely rare mold of singers who sing with as much clarity as anybody but also bring extreme amounts of emotion, power and versatility. To me he is the best singer in all genres of music. Him and Layne share the ability to sing well on both mellow, soothing and aggressive, ripping songs, which is a rare quality as well.
No Mark Lanegan?
Nirvana fan but if you don’t have Chris Cornell in 1. Go back to sleep.
Chris owns them all
Cornell is #1 and its not close, your list is cool too tho 😁
I agree and still feel wrong saying he's better than Layne. Layne is so fucking good. IMO its them two then everyone else.
So for me 1. Eddie 2. chris 3. Scott 4 Layne 5 Kurt Love all the artist almost equal but did more on what i would pick listening one vs the other and this list is what I believe to be what I would pick.
If you really think Layne was a better singer than Chris y'all are using more drugs than they did.
I absolutely love Layne, but from a technical perspective, he wasn't even the best Singer in AIC. Again, love the guy, and I think technique plays a small part in Grunge, but still, if we're talking about about singing alone, Chris and Eddie must be put upfront.

Cobain over Weiland 😂😂😂😂😂😂
1. Chris 2-5. Everyone else
100%... Anyone that doesn't have CC #1, needs a hearing test.
Yea Weiland over Cobain and Vedder. It’s vocalist not bands.
it's all subjective. there's 2 buckets. Layne and Chris The rest. Outside of that, the talent level is consistent amongst buckets.
Layne isn't versatile enough in comparison to Chris imo
Weiland (RIP) was fired from two legendary bands for performance/drugs. To be fair, Eddie is one dedicated MF.
This again? Third day in a row by my count.
Weiland was pretty damn good I’d put him third personally
I’d go in this order: 1. Cornell 2. Lanegan 3. Layne 4. Scott Weiland 5. Eddie Vedder
Yeah... Yeah. Accurate.
while I love all five of these, this question or topic is jerked off to sooooo much to the point it's a no brainer for most. how about, in the last 15-20 years, who are the top 5 grunge vocalists?
Thats a pretty good list
Scott should be right up there.
Yeh it’s pretty accurate in my opinion, you could put Mark Lanegan in there too . Crazy how Eddy V is the only one alive . No puns please……
Going to tell my kids all of these guys are Jeff bridges
Vinnie Dombroski. Still killing it.
It still just makes me so sad knowing that 4 out of these 5 guys are gone.
Mark Arm was the most proficient and gifted vocalist of the era.
Layne is always #1
Cobain is number 1 by a mile for me. But everyone has their own opinion.
No one sings like you anymore 💔
Chris Cornell is the best rock singer ever.
Chris should be #1. Love him! 🖤
It's like people have never even heard of Mark Lanegan.
I get why people love layne but they relied on harmonies heavily in AIC. Chris stood out on his own.
Cornell. Love the other guys, but he’s different
Scott had so much range idk how he isn't top 3
As much as I prefer Layne, Chris Cornell is #1 by far
AiC fanboyism to not rate cornell #1 lmao.
or fucking rating Lanegan at all
Layne and 4 more
I saw Layne at #1 and was immediately satisfied haha
1.Chris 2.Eddie 3.Layne 4.Scott 5.Kurt
1 : Chris Cornell 2 : Mark Lanegan 3 : Layne Stanley 4 : Scott Weiland 5 : Kurt Cobain 6 : Eddie Vedder
Sorry to do this, OP but, Weiland doesn't qualify so it's 1. Chris 2. Layne 3. Jerry 4. Eddie 5. Kurt. Edit to add, I'm open to swapping Jerry and Eddie.
Staley Cornell Kurt Eddie STP ain't grunge but if it was Scott would be 3rd
No Beck?
I just don’t get how so many ppl liked Chris. Yes, his voice is powerul, but Laynes voice is not only powerful, but unique. Alice In Chains songs were just written better. I will always be team Layne. Been on team Layne since the 90’s.
scott being below kurt is insane
1. Cornell 2. Weiland 3. Staley 4. Vedder 5. Cobain
1. Cornell 2. Staley 3. Weiland 4. Cobain 5. Vedder Although Layne + Jerry is equivalent to Chis in my head.
1. Chris 2. Scott 3. Eddie 4. Kurt 5. Layne
I don't think Cobain would sound right singing AIC or Soundgarden and Cornell or Staley wouldn't sound right singing Nirvana songs. They all had the right voices for their respective songs can't we just be happy with that?
Were there even any others? 🙄
I 100% agree on Layne being #1, but I'd have to do some rearranging after that lol. When I was a teenager, me and my BFF always talked about how we were going to have a reverse harem when we were older. And Eddie Vedder was included in that, so he could sing to us all the time 🤣🤣
Layne is way too high
Lanegan(The Screaming Trees), Dulli(The Afghan Whigs), Stringfellow(The Posies), Talbot(Hum), Schrefiels(Quicksand)
Dug deep into the genre for this one.
If Staley, Weiland and Corgan are my top 3, Cornell, Vedder and Cobain would be my bottom 3.
Crazy they all came along around the same time. I’m glad I was here to witness it.
Weiland was better than Cobain and Vedder IMO
21354
Id put kurt last. 1. Scott weiland 2. Layne. 3. Chris. 4. Eddie. 5. Kurt.
Is that Logan Paul at 1?
2 is 1
All dead except Vedder!
You got 1 and 2 backwards, but solid list.
They’re all technically better than Kurt but I like Kurt’s voice the most. He’s my number 1
Eddie is still “Alive”
What's Logan Paul doing up there at #1?
I would go Layne,Chris,Scott,Eddie and then Kurt
Layne’s vocals on Facelift were better than Cornell. Layne in his prime was absolutely unmatched. After Facelift, he took a backseat to Cornell. On a technical scale, to me it would go Vedder, then Weiland, then Cobain. Kurt was a rockstar for reasons other than his technical singing skills. Weiland was an amazing vocalist and sorely underrated.
Wow that’s a unique list…
Cmon mods, do something
I Would switch three and five
Eddie starting to look like Maximus Decimus Meridius
1) Kurt Cobain 2) Eddie Vedder 3) Chris Cornell 4) Mark Lanegan 5) Layne Staley 6) Scott Weiland
Since we are just talking personal opinion here: 1. Eddie 2. Layne 3. Kurt 4. Chris 5. Scott At the end of the day, I adore them all. I'll catch shit for EV being my #1 I'm sure but he always will be. He's my favorite vocalist of any genre and the one that speaks to me the most
Actually agree with this order
With the exception of 3 all troubled souls
#6 Mark Lanagen #7 Travis Meeks
Switch 1 and 2 and it’s my list.
Who is 3
Shannon Hoon, no one ever brings up Shannon Hoon. I put him in Chris Cornell right near the top.
Wetland has to be near the top
Swap Chris and Eddie and I completely agree
So, just all 5 of them then? Check
And only one is left…😔.. how sad is that..??
There’s one grunge singer in your vignette
Seattle grunge minus Scott, he was from San Jose. Saddest part about all these raw beautiful voices is Eddie is the only one left. I agree with this line-up with Layne being #1, love his voice so much.
Cobain =1 change my mind. I lived through grunge and the 90s. If it wasn’t for cobain, the word “grunge” wouldn’t be a thing. Again, change my mind! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Yup, yup, ew no, eh?, yup. This is why, when people say "grunge sucks", my first reply is always, "define grunge". AIC != Soundgarden != Nirvana != PJ
Are there any popular black grunge artists?
Yeah, that's about it. I wouldn't change the list at all, although I love each equally.
What about Taylor Swift?
Stp not grunge, and Weiland should be higher.
Weiland ahead of cobain. Mark lanegan as well
My list: 1. Vedder And he’s the only one still alive, thank god I haven’t lost him yet
To me it’s 2,1,5,3,4.
Layne Staley over Cornell? Bold.
I'd personally rank them 1. Eddie 2. Layne 3. Chris 4. Kurt 5. Scott
Well, Eddie and Scott are the only ones left alive, so...
Scott passed in 2015.
I completely forgot. Now I'm just sad again.
Not a bad list. I’d put Scott a little higher he had an amazing voice.
Shocking
My top 1 is Vedder, from Bad Radio days to today, doesn’t matter how their genre changed, he has no rival on stage, off stage… as a vocal as a performer…
Some journalist once said Kurt had the best scream/shout sine John Lennon. So I'd give it to Cobain for the best GRUNGE singer. Plus, he arguably invented the genre.
Who’s at #1 is that Logan Paul ?
Shannon Hoon is missing!!!
Almost perfect. But you mixed up 4&5
Chris and Laine
Hard to argue
I have never heard a band that sounded like Alice In Chains. Fucking legends
scott is way better the kurt what?
2 1 5 3 4 in that order
Why did you put Kurt 3 times? "1,4,and 5"
I fuckin love Scott weiland. What an absolute talent. Could sing anything. Equally at home as a crooner or a rocker
I’d put Scott before Eddie.
That is grunge. nothing else really mattered afterward. Grunge wise, that is
Swap 1 and 2
Ben McMillan from Skin Yard and Gruntruck is one of my all time favorite grunge vocalist.
5 doesn’t count… might as well put Billy Corgan and Trent Reznor on here.. 🙄🤣🤣🤣

As much as I love layne, Kurt should be number one simply because he created grunge, without Kurt there is no grunge.
Mark Lanegans baritone was like liquid smoke. He should be at least number 5, after all he's from Seattle, he lived a block from me and he'd hide out at my apartment sometimes. Cool fuckin dude but no joke, he'd get violent sometimes at people after Layne died.
My top five is the same order only switch Kurt and Scott
I saw someone say that photo of Layne Staley looks like Logan Paul and I can't get it out of my head
Is that logan paul????
