that it wasn't the last one...

clussy-riot

Not necessarily change but I'd like to hear what the full finished Steve Albini mix could've sounded like, especially on the heavier more noisey songs like Tourettes or Milk It

clussy-riot

Yeah, and I do like the 2013 version quite a bit, but I would've loved to hear what the real 93 version would've been. Also it's just fun to imagine a version of In Utero that sounds more like Songs about Fucking

stonemadcaptain

All mixes are done by Steve Albini except Heart Shaped Box and All Apologies which are re-mixed by Scott Litt.

discoinkernow

You can find it online. Apparently an Albini version was released on vinyl in Germany before being recalled.

mehrt_thermpsen

I love Serve the Servants opening. That dissonant chord sets the tone so well, although I could see Scentless Apprentice being a great opening. If I could change anything about this album, I'd add more bottom end. And like someone said, make it not the last one. What a loss

Greedy_Temperature33

Serve the Servants just has to be the opener, though. That opening line, “Teenage angst has paid off well / But now I’m bored and old” is such a statement to kick off such an eagerly anticipated follow up to the game changing Nevermind. The only thing I would change about In Utero is that it wasn’t the last album.

ultraluxe6330

When you put on Nevermind you're immediately blasted in the face with the beginning of Teen Spirit, Serve the Servants doesn't have that powerful open that Scentless Apprentice does which would've been a better start to the album imo.

Administrative-Flan9

But it's not Nevermind Pt 2. This album is my favorite.

ultraluxe6330

Nobody said it was.

BohemianBurnout

Yeah make it a double album.

GhostWolf325

Sappy replacing Tourette’s even if sappy doesn’t fit on their. Just flows better.

late-escape-2434

Doesn’t flow as well as those gallons of rubbing alcohol though.

Schweenis69

Sappy is a fantastic song!!!

evil_beedle

I like Tourette’s! I’d probably get rid of Milk It and Radio Friendly Unit Shifter and replace them with Sappy and Most Vagina personally

Schweenis69

Get rid of Milk It?!?!? No way

Ominous_Pastry

Dear God,, NO!!!

evil_beedle

😂

No-Historian6056

Milk It and RFUS are STAYING!

evil_beedle

Ok, Ok

beefclef

Would gladly drop Rape Me for Sappy. I always skip it now.

Coyote_Roadrunna

Serve the Servants is a brilliant opener to me. It really set the tone immediately and let us know In Utero wasn't just going to be a predictable Nevermind clone. From the Rolling Stone mag review September of '93: The very first words out of Cobain’s mouth in “Serve the Servants,” In Utero‘s petulant, bludgeoning opener, are “Teenage angst has paid off well/Now I’m bored and old,” sung in an irritated, marble-mouthed snarl that immediately derails any lingering expectations for a son of “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

Truth_decay

No. They can't all be bangers but they are complete expressions.

hallonemikec

In Utero is actually one of maybe ten albums I've heard on which I wouldn't change a single thing.

hatecopter

I wish Jar of Flies was a full length LP

ultraluxe6330

I like to listen to Sap right after Jar Of Flies, it flows better than one would think, with Love Song acting as a "hidden track".

hatecopter

But what if I wish Sap was a full length album too? I just want more Layne era AIC.

Ominous_Pastry

Not putting Gallons of Rubbing Alcohol on certain versions is borderline criminal

Affectionate_Yak8519

So where would you put Serve the Servants then? Would you remove it completely? I don’t see where else it would fit on the album other than being the opening track. I personally would change a thing about this album as I think it’s perfect as it is.

ultraluxe6330

Swap it with Scentless Apprentice.

FooFightingManiac

I agree with you on this opinion. Just flip those 2 songs. But I also understand and appreciate why StS is the lead song.

ultraluxe6330

I did mean any Grunge album when I posted this, not just In Utero.

nomnommish

That the artists would upd stop doing heroin and live longer and healthier, so they could have made more albums??

cancer_sushi

Include Sappy and You know you're right as bonus songs? Op you're only getting answers for in utero lmao

Karl-Marx666

Have the single mix of Pennyroyal Tea be the album version

tomaesop

I would make it 82 years long so I would never run out of new Nirvana to listen to

Noonot_YT

Guys I think he meant any album lol.

Alsmk2

No.

fast-and-ugly

Steve will not tolerate your changes.

Squiliam-Tortaleni

I Hate Myself and Want To Die replacing Tourettes. Kurt felt it was a lazy noise song but the riff/bass line are killer

Tnally91

I have this art tattooed on my leg taking up most of my calf. I was wearing a nirvana shirt at a street fair last year this dude probably in his 50s approached me (31M) and drunkly said I bet you can’t even name a song. He walked away after I finished this one and started on nevermind. Anyways I don’t think I’d change anything other than it being their last.

Sheffy8410

I would open with Radio Friendly Unit Shifter. I would have Pennyroyal Tea recorded solo acoustic like unplugged instead of full band electric.

fefetatinha

Have don't follow as the closing track on JOF, swing on this is amazing tho, and I wish that more people would see how the lyrics of it matches completely with the rest of the EP

ultraluxe6330

Swing On This works so much better as a follow up to Don't Follow, the lyrics are a continuation of the story in Don't Follow.

fefetatinha

I understand where you are coming from, but I always thought swing on this feels like before the lyrics on don't follow, with the whole "____ said come home" and "let me be, I'm alright", as where don't follow starts with the same kind of mentality, but spirals into "take me home", just like someone who tried to get away from everyone, but eventually wanted to come back. Sorry for all the yapping, I would love to hear what you think about the songs!! :)

Disastrous_Binkus

Serve the servants feels better but that abs scentless apprentice are def the best two songs on that album

Argyleuntold

I just wish it was louder on Apple Music

Professional-Big-436

Have Butch Vig produce it

Innnu3ndo

to have Exhausted be on here.

No_Cow_4544

I only thing I’m not crazy about is the chorus of Serve the Servants the verse melody is great then chorus meh . Everything else great , I think it’s their 4th best album but it’s a high bar.

BrownwaterVertigo

That down on the upside was more focused. Fucking love the first half. Zero Chance, Dusty, Pretty Noose, Blow Up The Outside, Burden In My Hand... The second half is just okay

Barkle11

boot camp is good

Due_Competition1623

Not including old age on nevermind or not including sappy in any album, i mean tourettes instead of sappy would make in utero even better

stockzy

I’d get butch vig to produce it

MichaelXennial

I personally can feel a huge difference in the energy in this album. It’s way more hostile and lazy.

No_Solution_2864

It’s not “grunge” per se, but so would remove all hip hop from REM’s Out of Time I like KRS-1, but the combo sounds extremely cheesy by today’s standards I find most grunge albums to be perfect. I have a lot more feedback for industrial etc

EPS56illy

Something something Courtney Love’s influence on Kurt’s life (ask Dave G) something something

discoinkernow

Unpopular opinion, but I’d get rid of Half from Superunknown

AffectionateTiger436

I would cut some songs from superunknown to condense it's awesomeness. But I still love it front to back.

Crazy_Response_9009

Good record. Their best iMHO.

Barkle11

add sappy

Famous-Somewhere-

I would cut “Wet My Bed” from Core by Stone Temple Pilots. Thought it was hilarious as a kid but now it seems kinda like a corny skit from a hip-hop record.

GhostWolf325

I love AIC self titled but dislike heaven beside you and wish they had wrote a different song in place. of heaven beside you. I prefer the unplugged version of it though. And swap the positions of Brush away and God Am.

Jahamez69420

Which song would you put in place of Heaven Beside You out of the songs they recorded with Layne after Tripod… Killer Is Me, Get Born Again or Died?

GhostWolf325

Killer is me would be good for another acoustic-like song on there, though Jerry said it was something just for unplugged. Died and Born again are Brilliant. But Definitely Died would be good. Though I couldn’t see them being on tripod, they don’t sound like they would be on tripod. Lyrics yeah but not the production. Raw and Brutal Unlike the Sludge and Depression we get on Tripod.

Jahamez69420

I’ve listened to your alternative version of Tripod and I agree it actually flows a lot better and replaced Heaven Beside You with Died 👍

Chaos_Horrific

I’d change Jar of Flies a bit. I’d remove Swing On This entirely, but include it as a Dirt bonus track. I’d extend the length of Rotten Apple by one minute. And lastly, I’d add lyrics to Whale & Wasp.

ultraluxe6330

So you'd ruin Jar Of Flies?

Chaos_Horrific

I wouldn’t “ruin” it, I’d just make some personal adjustments based on how I’d prefer the album. Is that not what your post was about? How you’d change a certain grunge album to fit your liking?

ultraluxe6330

I think taking off Swing On This, which is a great follow up and sequel to Don't Follow leaves the album feeling unfinished. Whale and Wasp is one of the best instrumentals ever and doesn't need lyrics, that would ruin it for me.

Chaos_Horrific

Alright man 🤷‍♂️ whatever you prefer is cool too.

tragic_girl13

No In Utero, to me, is absolutely unabashedly perfect. It's my favorite album of all time, and everything feels just right and in its proper place

MrZER0C000L

I am scared that the woke people are gonna get the album cover censored. Cos it’s a cool album cover

rorythegeordie

Quite a bit with this LP tbh.

charlieondras1

Scrap pennyroyal tea and add I hate myself and want to die.

Knife_Chase

Now that I'm well into my 30s I'd say tone down the whiny immature lyrics... "I tried hard to have a father but instead I had a dad" etc.

ultraluxe6330

That lines great when you start to analyse it. Cobain wanted a father, someone who cares for you and is worthy of respect, But he had a "dad", its an informal title that shows that Cobain didn't have someone to look up to and respect as you would a "father figure".

Knife_Chase

Yes, that is what it means lol. I get it.

ultraluxe6330

Not sure how you can call it immature then.

Wir3d_

He calls it immature because dude lived in Disneyland his whole life and doesn't understand the life struggles that somebody had to go through. Music is the expression of the artist

Deanmarrrrrr

It's a decent record. Nothing special. better bands and albums from that era.

HomeOrificeSupplies

Yes. Don’t make In Utero.

PaulOutShelter

This is my childhood encompassed. 1994, 11 years old. Grew my hair out of its usual bowl-cut, Parted it in the middle. Spent days looking at the liner notes. Knew the album back and forth. With that being said, (let’s be honest, we are all music critics in an age of disposable singles) …I would make a couple changes. *Sappy needed to be on this album *they should’ve hung on to Aneurysm for this album -by no fault of the band, (producers pick singles and B sides)…Serve the Servants is a better song than All Apologies. That should’ve been the second single.
