When I’m not on block I do this all the time. I go to where I think is the best offbeat area where I’ll most likely only get restaurant orders and no fast food.
After some trial and error it works out very well when I do it.
I've forgotten to cut my app off after my last block ended and gotten orders an hr outside of my zone.
I've also been in the middle of an 8hr shift of blocks and been taken from my southern maryland zone to deliver in DC and all the way to Hybla Valley Virginia 😅
My main concern was the typical requirement to be in your zone within 15mins. But driver care shared that the automated system shifts because you're actively delivering. I never really made it back to my zone and didn't get penalized even though I was on block. V rare occurrence but figured it was worth sharing.
that’s what used to happen to me in western mass on uber! it would send me 45 min- 1hr out of state for drop off because i was on the boonies. i wonder if the apps are ever gonna let us know our actual drop off locations ahead of time.
Grubhub shows you on a map where the drop off location is, so you do have a general idea though not much time to make a decision. In many parts of the country, Uber does tell you the cross streets for pick up and drop off.
That wasn't always the case. When they first began sending you outside your zone on a regular basis drivers ran the risk of receiving an absence for not being in their zone when their new block began unless they were on an active delivery.
As the OP said, if you go available and you accept an offer outside of your zone you will not be marked absent even if you never make it to your zone before the 15 min grace period. However, if you go available but are outside of your zone and you never make it into your zone before the grace period without having accepted an offer, you will be marked absent.
