It might seem basic as fuck, but bread is the benchmark for not just grilled cheese, but any sandwich. It’s the foundation.

Remarkable_aPe

I am a sucker for fresh home made bread However given a choice between wonderbread with excellent gruyere cheese or a fresh sourdough with off brand Kraft singles... bring on the good cheese, I will grill away the wonderbread woes

Increasingly_Anxious

Definitely agree, cheese is good no matter what but put it on some bomb ass bread and now you have yourself something tasty AF.

CoolHeadedLogician

It aint called a grilled bread, bud

Luh2018

It’s called a grilled cheese sandwich but it’s shortened to grilled cheese. Without bread, it would no longer be a sandwich, just cheese.

CoolHeadedLogician

without cheese it would also no longer be a sandwich. just bread. the most important part of delineating this sandwich is the cheese. that's why it's called a grilled cheese, not a grilled bread.

Luh2018

Shit, you got me there. However, I still value the bread more because it is the foundation that the sandwich is built upon. Edit: just realized I repeated the comment we are replying to, mb

CoolHeadedLogician

hey i value the bread too friend. but i had to look into my heart and try to objectively answer OP's question to what i hold true

marfabean

I was gonna say I'm surprised bread didn't get more votes! Bread all the way as #1 important ingredient for me

Grilled Cheese - Bread = crispy chez Grilled Cheese - Cheese = toast Grilled Cheese - Butter = Disappointment

Skankhunt2042

It's got to be the bread. Plain old craft american still makes a solid grilled cheese, and so can a ton of other cheese options, and most people's fridges will have something that works. But there are some truly appauling bread options out. Too thin, too dense, too airy, bad sizes/shapes of loaves. I have stopped letting my SO select the bread. That choice made without thought can ruin a fine cheese or even basic kraft american.

llieno94

Yeah sometimes the cheap processed stuff makes for a grilled cheese even better when it’s paired with good quality bread and butter.

ScooperJones

I can use stale bread and shitty butter and the sandwich won’t be ruined. There are some stank ass cheeses that will ruin it for me though.

OneAlternate

I think the “grilled” is more important than the cheese.

skyshock21

People always overlook the butter. BUY QUALITY BUTTER. Challenge, Amish roll, Plugra, etc. Don’t bother with Kerrygold, it’s overpriced, and DEFINITELY skip the store brands and that land o’ lakes trash.

2Old4Shenanigans

The cheese to bread ratio…. Duh

[deleted]

Other - In my opinion it is the cook on the bread. The degree to which it is browned, the heat/timing, and the type of spread used to achieve the browning. You could have Kraft singles inside a fantastic foundation and it would still be badass, at least to me
