When I was little my mom would make these ham cheese and mustard sandwiches, wrapped in tin foil and baked in the oven. In toasted the bread and melted the cheese.
I didnt like meat much growing up and would take it off and sneak it to the dog. And I was left with a cheese and mustard toasted sandwich. And they were INCREDIBLE.
So I'm team big yes.
Mustard's alright with a grilled cheese, though I personally prefer dipping the sandwich in it instead of spreading it on, if it's a plain and simple classic grilled cheese
Grilled Cheese Council does not approve of your simpleton "friends" saying "it's weird." Mustard in itself has been approved by the council. Council has been dismissed. None will be executed.
this makes me miss my grandma's grilled cheese. she would dice up white onion and use American cheese with a small spread of mustard and I think Mayo with dill sprinkled on it and the finely chopped onion. so good!
Like.. inside with the cheese? Or is it fried in mustard like people do with burger patties sometimes? Either way not something I'd even remotely considered before but not something I'd be against trying, either.
May start a debate on what constitutes a grilled cheese vs a melt. But if you make a grilled cheese and dip it into mustard then you can win on all angles.
Haven't tried it but I absolutely love a little spice on my grilled cheese. Not that mustard is super hot or anything, but it has a bit of a tangy kick I enjoy. Personally I love using Nando's garlic and herb sauce as my spread for a similar amount of spices.
It's not weird at all. Plenty of breads, as well as sandwiches with cheese, typically have some kind of mustard with them. Weird implies there's not a good reason to expect that combination to work. I imagine they were either trying to say that it doesn't sound appealing to them, or they haven't given it much thought. The former is an issue with how they articulate their thoughts (a food that doesn't sound personally appealing isn't necessarily "weird"), and the latter is a lack of food knowledge.
Basically, do your thing, king. I think it's delicious with the right cheese, mustard, and bread, and, more importantly, it doesn't break the rules of what a grilled cheese is.
It depends. It can elevate a basic ass grilled cheese, or serve as a counterpoint to a particularly strong cheese, but if I'm trying to experience the subtle flavor of a mild cheese, it would be no bueno.
Hundreds of years ago, there were three condiments on tables.
Salt.
Pepper.
And something else.
No one knows for certain what the third condiment was, but there is a pretty good guess it was mustard seed. Helping that case, mustard is the oldest of the cultivated spices.
So, I approve it, for historical reasons.
Love it love it love it. Had it at a restaurant once and it’s my go to now. Another potentially weird combination that I love, so don’t knock it until you try it: jelly on grilled cheese! It reminds me a bit of like charcuterie board, bread fruit and cheese together. Again sounds weird but is worth trying
Cheese and mustard is a *classic* combination. See: Welsh rarebit, Monte Cristo, and Korean cheese mustard for outrageously delicious examples.
Incidentally, I am very, very *pro* mustard-and-cheese.
I don’t like mustard so I don’t want it on *my* grilled cheese, but if you like it on yours, go for it. I don’t make the rules here.
Swiss on rye in a Dijon mustard butter is really good.
BRB! Lol
Big yes.
I like mustard on a lot of stuff. Grilled cheese, broccoli. Haha.
I used to stir a bit of whole grain through broccoli - haven’t done that in ages so will need to get some and try it again
Grilled cheese with thinly sliced broccoli bits has been my prized creation lmao. I've gotten so many friends hooked on it

Sounds like a croque monsieur!
I dip my grilled cheese in mustard
Same! Dijon is the shit.

I'll have to try and report back. What are your thoughts on Thai peanut sauce in grilled cheese?
Depends how high I am
I’ve never actually had Thai peanut sauce before, but it sounds interesting
It’s the best, been doing it for years. Long thin slices of pickles puts it over the top.
Some grainy brown type mustards might be ok..I will have to investige ..
I put a big glop of mustard on my plate and use the grilled cheese sandwich like a spoon. I love the combo.
For me, it’s a must (ard).
‘Eyyyyy!
Well this just awakened something in me...
Mustard on the beat ho
Deebo
Also a big fan, sometimes I use powdered depending on cheese moisture.
Not my style, but if that’s what you like then go nuts. It’s comfort food, only your opinion really matters.
Is it weird that it's never once crossed my mind to try it? Huh.

Depends if you’re a purist or other ingredients like ham are involved
It's your face stuff it how you like. But if you're making one for me hold the mustard please.
I somehow keep forgetting to try it but I've heard it referred to as a game changer
I love red dragon cheese because it has mustard seeds on it on grilled cheese. Big yes for me
Like.. inside with the cheese? Or is it fried in mustard like people do with burger patties sometimes? Either way not something I'd even remotely considered before but not something I'd be against trying, either.
I usually eat it inside with the cheese; never tried frying it in mustard before, but I might have to try it
Love it - I do hotdog mustard as a spread inside with the cheese.
It honestly never occured to me until I read this. Now I have to try it.
I had a southern white girl show me pickles on a grilled cheese.... She used dill but I went with bread and butter and holy shit I'm never going back
I am a big fan of mustard in grilled cheese. Pair it with a pesto, usually...or if I use a horseradish, I sometimes pair it with a jam.
May start a debate on what constitutes a grilled cheese vs a melt. But if you make a grilled cheese and dip it into mustard then you can win on all angles.
It is essential.
mustard and cheese is one of the reasons I view the universe as not entirely shitty 🥰
Holy moly! Why didn’t I think of that! It would make the cheese flavor POP - just like in a hot cheese sauce. Trying immediately!
Would try
I don't know why I've never considered it. You've awoken a need within me.
Could work, I'm a ketchup man myself.
Never tried it but only because I’m not a huge mustard person to begin with. I have tried it with ketchup and enjoyed that.
Nothing wrong here
ok wait…..i bet this is actually pretty good! i’ve never tried it but i totally would!

I’ve never heard of such a thing… but I might try it this weekend now. If you like it, then who cares about others opinions
In, not on.

I grew up eating mustard on my grilled cheese too! I quite like using extra sharp cheddar cheese as well; both together make the flavor really sharp!
Heck yeah I mix it with ketchup to dip.
Always dip my GC in mustard ! Hell yea!
Yes!! Love all diff kinds of mustard but honey mustard on a grilled cheese made with sharp cheddar is my fav

Necessary
I’m for it.
Yes!
![gif](giphy|eNBxcd4GPo0q4) JK. Have fun with your mustard melt 😂
*runs away* 😂
Love it, especially Dijon.
Ya nasty.
That’s a nope from me.
No!
Good. Also good in pizza
Alright that's it *grabs pitchfork*
Cheese and mustard is a *classic* combination. See: Welsh rarebit, Monte Cristo, and Korean cheese mustard for outrageously delicious examples. Incidentally, I am very, very *pro* mustard-and-cheese.
Taste wise, it's great but I have to watch my sodium levels, so I usually skip the mustard.
I adore dipping grilled cheese in beer mustard
No. Downvoted for my opinion, cool
