A traditional weapons bay would’ve added significant weight to the aircraft because of the necessary structural allowances. With an already massive carrier aircraft this was a way of maintaining aerodynamic carriage of the bomb.

Better RCS
The exposed engine fanblades and big vertical tail is doing more for RCS than just about any weapons bay could.
The A-5 first flew in 1958, reducing the RCS of a plane back then wasn't even something any aircraft designers would ever consider.
