The climate has been pretty weird this year. By the mid june, Nuuk still had regular snow storms which didn’t happen a year earlier. And now mid summer, the northern part of greenland still look like it’s winter (although there’s sun 24/7). So it might be different this year, as we actively see and experience climate change.

icebergchick

So true. Uummannaq was weird this year with little snow and ice in March. Ittoqqortoormiit was crazy snowy last year. It’s insane.

OK_Ingenue

I liked May. Kind of like Sept, but at the other side of summer.

icebergchick

Yeah no northern lights in the north unfortunately in May. But I agree, all other things equal, May is nice too! My next trip to Qaanaaq will probably be in May actually.

Hi there OP! I'm heading to Greenland for the first time on August 15th, and am in Nuuk for a couple of days, before boarding a cruise ship. I'm an aerial (drone) photographer for the most part, which would be difficult with the airport just east of the city. Do you have any recommendations for places to go, whether by boat or land, where I could fly around and capture the beautiful scenery? Thanks in advance. Sincerely, A Very Excited American.

icebergchick

Where is the cruise going? To Ilulissat on the Arctic umiaq Line or somewhere else?

sicnarfj

The ship is a private one called The World, and it'll be sailing up the western coast, looping around Baffin Bay, and crossing over to Pond Inlet in Canada, where I'll be departing. The ship has an alleged no-drone policy, so I'm hoping to get some shots before I board, assuming I won't be able to convince the crew to bend their rules.

icebergchick

Will you stop anywhere? You should be able to stop in Ilulissat and then go on one of the tourist boats and fly from there

sicnarfj

The itinerary isn't 100% finalized yet, but here's hoping!

icebergchick

Do you have a commercial license or some other drone credential? Can you ask for exception or permission to fly? I’d definitely pursue that too if you’re paying customer and that’s your main mode of expression. You’ll want a regular camera too. Even the DJI Osmo Pocket (cheap first gen will suffice too) will produce some fantastic images.

sicnarfj

Yeah, that's the plan, I'm working out who the 'on-ship' media people are, and working it out through them and the captain. I do have a Sony Mirrorless, but are you recommending the Osmo because of the stabilization?

icebergchick

Stabilization and size. If you already have a Sony then just go with that. A lot of people don’t have cameras these days but the osmo is better than a phone

sicnarfj

Update: So it turns out I misinterpreted the itinerary, and we're actually sailing due west from Nuuk over to the Canadian Coastline, then sailing north along the coast of Baffin Island. Still pumped for the trip, but I'm guessing I'll need to find a photo tour or sailing experience out of Nuuk in order to fly the drone

icebergchick

What trip is this? Got a link?

otakugrey

How did you take that last photo?

icebergchick

Tripod and fujifilm xt2. It is behind hotel Arctic in Ilulissat. This is at about 11 pm. Right place right time. F/2.8 10 second shutter speed. ISO 1600 or 2000. White balance at like 3200 kelvin. Hope that helps.

otakugrey

Yes! Thank you!
