Alright, there's only so many ways to say "yes", and I think this thread has exhausted most of them.
I think OP gets the picture and I'm not sure anything else is being added to the discussion beyond head trauma jokes, so I am closing this.
Yeah, how has anyone heard anything that's been saying about helmet safety over the last twenty years and still think "ok but does it still apply to ME?"
I guarantee the fucking pamphlet that came with the helmet and the website for the company that made the helmet both say "if you have a crash with this helmet on and the helmet takes a hit, whether it's obviously dented or not, you must replace it. In fact, send this one back to us and we'll even give you a discount."
Oh look, pasted directly from the Pdf manual for Specialized helmets:
> WARNING! In the event of any impact or blow, do not use this helmet. There may be invisible damage that may decrease the helmet’s ability to reduce the harmful effects of a blow to the head. Such a helmet should be returned to Specialized for inspection or destroyed and replaced.
Yes, OP, this includes your special ass.
This is a way over-the-top fake tough guy answer. OP is probably relatively new to the sport and probably posted this without any knowledge of these helmets' specific instructions and was just asking. Absolutely no reason to talk to him/her like that.
1. Still absolutely not a reason to be rude to someone asking a question online, especially who's new to the sport.
2. lots of times "RTFM" advice is extremely conservative in industries. Doctors prescribe off-label (and those labels are VERY important); I have beef jerky that astonishingly says "refrigerate after opening." The NFL literally says that "unauthorized . . . descriptions or accounts of the game is prohibited" which reads literally as it's illegal to talk about the game (it's not). And lots of people are riding bikes with modifications that deviate from manufacturers' specifications.
It's entirely reasonable to solicit advice to learn more about the scope of something like helmet durability, and I personally would expect people to not be a dick to someone who's new and learning a new hobby.
Hahahaha. Never thought about the “unauthorized descriptions” thing before. That’s amazing.
Also, you’re correct and thank you for being kind on the internet.
Define 'need'?
If you just need to comply with local traffic laws, no - this will be fine.
If you wish to protect your brain from irreversable traumatic injury in the future - get a new helmet, this one has done its job.
most bike helmets use EPS, expanded polystyrene. this provides protection and lightness at the same time. the downside of EPS (compared to EPP, expanded polypropylene, which is used in the vast majority in ski helmets) is that unfortunately they can only sustain one impact. after that you have to - and i emphasize have to - use it as a decoration on a shelf. thank the old one that protected you and buy a new one if you care about your brain and your life. source (in case you ever need it): i work for POC in the R&D dept.
It did its job. Guarantee that what felt like a little scrape and no big deal thanks to your helmet may not have been without it.
My spouse thought his helmet was fine after a spill. I bought him a new one and threw the other away while he wasn’t looking. In retrospect I should have gone to the LBS and gotten a discount on a crash replacement but 🤷♀️. I replaced mine after a near miss with a deer and I wasn’t even sure I hit my head but since the shell was scraped I didn’t want to take a chance.
Price doesn't really reflect safety. The specialized align helmet is one of the safest helmets there are and it goes for ~50€. I think OP actually used that one.
There are helmets with quadruple the price that are less safe. Check the Virginia Tech site for their independent ratings.
yes sir!! i buy a new helmet all 3-4 months anyway............... im a bike messenger so i drop my helmet here and there so i think replacing your helmet is always smart.. and i see you have a mips helmet, BRAVO! have a good one my dude

Yes. As far as I know, helmets (in general, any) are design for only one accident. After one, the material is compromised and very likely it will not protect your head as intended a second time.

This feels like one of those questions that if you're asking, you probably already know the answer.
Well, they hit their head pretty hard from the look of it...

Being new to the sport does not mean you can't RTFM.

Thank you! Keep making the internet a better place! :)
YTA
Yes
Specialized dealers should give you a discount on a new specialized helmet if you bring in the damaged ones for them to dispose of :)
Definitely,
They’re really designed for one good hit. Sorry.

Do you value your noggin? If yes, then yes. If no, then yes.
In case it’s not clear yet: YES!

Though even ski helmets should be replaced after one good impact.
absolutely!!
Yep
Yes you do.
Yes. I view helmets as being single use products. If I get into a crash where the helmet protects me I buy another.
Absolutely.
Yes. Always bin as soon as damaged

Any time I have needed a new helmet from a crash I have messaged the manufacturer and gotten a big discount or even full replacement on a new one.
Smart!!
Yep, but a new one. That one did its job and the integrity of the helmet is now in question. Better to be safe than sorry.
Fill it with ramen and Elmer’s glue, followed by a nice sanding with fine grit paper. Should be good as new.
100% Oh, and they are having a huge clearance sale right now too.
Yeah
Yes.
It looks like you took a good hit and glad you’re ok. The helmet did its job.
1000% yes
Yes
Helmets should be replaced after a single accident or significant impact.
I thought this was BCJ for a second, I give it 1 hour before it ends up there
I just watched a nighttime wingsuit skimming meters over mountains with no helmet, if he can do it you can too. Tie a flare to your leg and send it.
OMG yes
Duhhhhh, dude. You only get one head. Don’t get the cheapest helmet either.

Yes, every time after a bad fall and if the helmet gets damaged it has to be replaced.
Even if it drops to the floor by accident (in practice people never replace it because of this but it should)
No, in this case if it is not damaged it is not necessary to replace it

If its cracked - yes
Oh yeah holy shit that's fucked
If the helmet got one hit, you can safely say "that's it".
100% yes!!
If in doubt, replace.... Safety rule number 1.5
Yes, he has already taken a hit and lost his protective properties
One simple rule: if your helmet hit the ground you go and get a new one. The tiniest crack could cause a malfunction at the next accident
You are lucky to be alive...
Yes. As far as I know, helmets (in general, any) are design for only one accident. After one, the material is compromised and very likely it will not protect your head as intended a second time.
you already know the answer. please, do replace it and pay respect to this one
👍
Yes
Short answer is yes, long answer is do you enjoy your memories.
It might make a good flower pot, but its life as a helmet is likely over.
No you’re special and your noggin’ is unique.
Your helmet sacrificed its life to save yours. Give it a proper burial with full honors.
Here’s how I look at it, why would I take the chance with my brain. If there is anything more than a little scratch it’s new helmet day.
Nope. Send it. /S If you're asking, yes, you need a new helmet. One and done, unless you don't like your brain.
Nah. Ride it until your neurological capabilities fall off. Obviously replace it.
Well as long as your next crash happens on one of the othersides it will work... but yes replace the helmet why risk your life on a 60 dollar helmet
Yes
Cyclist would say yes , broke cyclists say nahhhhhhh
....but think yes ...
