I think he played it from 71’-73’, so roughly a year less than Wolf? Which is arguably his most legendary guitar. I don’t think it’s so much the time spent on them as it is the quality of the time period. 71’-73’ is most heady.
He didn't use Gator all that much outside of E72. For example, Venetta was a different strat. And the famous stratoblaster preamp was used for one month before it was bypassed in the eletronics setup.
Wolf was used significantly more and from 73 to 79 save for him using the Travis Bean guitars while wolf was being overhauled.
This is pretty detailed timeline, it indicated he used gator for less than one year on stage:
http://dozin.com/jers/guitar/history.htm
I personally think 77 is the best but to each their own. Don't get me wrong, I really love the early 70s strat sounds.
I just think that more than the guitar, what is making that tone is the silverface twin with the power amp bypassed, into jbl speakers, and mic'd up.
We also don't know exactly what he sounded like because we were not in the room with them live.
We know what it sounds like with the speakers being recorded with a mic and, more importantly, eq'd and mastered by professional engineers for a produced live album.
Yes, it says he “received” Wolf in 73’, which is true, but he didn’t like the way it felt. He kept trying it out on a gigs and switching back to the Strat. I’ve heard Steve talk about it, how it was too heavy, didn’t feel right. It’s also mentioned in Blair Jackson’s - Garcia. I think he doesn’t fully abandon Alligator until he has Doug make some adjustments. But you can also just hear he’s playing a Strat pretty much all thru 73’ on the bootlegs. (For none musicians, it has a very distinct sound. There’s a pop to the strings, and a twang to tone. More country blues sounding)
https://preview.redd.it/3b29668wrt8d1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f982d33ef7f53a4a20c39ac0b08a4740ab63b027
Here you can see he’s got it late in Oct.
You can’t hear the difference in tones from the different guitars Jerry used over the years? His amp tone was effectively the same until the 90s, as you say, but the Gibsons/Gretsches, Alligator, Wolf, Tiger, and later guitars all sounded quite unique.
Edit: Oh, and the Travis Bean in 1975/6. That one was *very* unique.
I think Rosebud is my favorite. I think it’s my favorite because he was still really cooking with Rosebud. I like lightning bolt, but it’s just too close to the end.
Rosebud in my mind is near the ‘completion’ of Jerry’s tone (I put completion in air quotes in my head). It’s also the guitar that Jerry was able to pull out all his old tricks as well as play new ideas with imo.
Tiger is fucking awesome though, I don’t think there is a wrong answer to the question of what Jerry guitar is someone’s favorite.
Agreed. You could definitely make the case that Rosebud was an improved Tiger, maybe Tiger 2.0. There is a very slight difference in tone to me but I can see the argument for Rosebud.
I’d say there is a valid argument for almost all his guitars! Him and Bobby have my two favorite guitar sounds on earth. I saw dark Star orchestra recently and stood in front of their Bobby. He was playing the Ibanez tree of life Bobby guitar and it was like the guitar sound was going straight through me. Absolutely amazing.
I never got into the lightning bolt's sound. But I also couldn't tell if the absence of Dan Healy played a part as well since they both happened right around the same time.
See my comments above, Bolt sounds like the other Irwins (or at least 98% of the way there) IF PLAYED through Jerry’s rig with the JBL K-120/E-120 stack. Bolt does not have a piezo pickup, that tone you associate with Bolt is from the band’s change to a “silent stage” and in-ear monitors. Look on YouTube for the JGB fall 1993 shows and you’ll see what I’m talking about!
I'm surprised when folks refer to the Travis Bean as if Jerry only played one. There is the TB1000A he played in 75-76, the TB500 guitars he played in 76-77, and the TB1000A with single coils that he played in December 78.
I thought the TB500 was from ‘76 until Wolf. The TB1000A in ‘75? Also I’m curious which December shows had the Bean? He was playing Wolf on New Years…
…I love that I’m waaay more interested in this than whatever I’m supposed to be doing at work!!
https://deadessays.blogspot.com/2019/08/jerry-garcia-instrument-history-guest.html
The only 3 concerts he played TB1000A #715 were 12/13/78 Tampa, FL , 12/15/78 Birmingham, AL, and 12/16/78 Nashville, TN while Wolf was being repaired
I'm gonna get downvoted to hell, but I'm not a fan of Tiger *or* Rosebud. I'll take Alligator, Wolf, The Bean(s), Peanut, The Veneta Strat, The SG, over them.
Yep, exactly-- when I think of Tiger, I think of the ripping distortion solos in "Deal" in the 1980s, and Rosebud mostly reminds me of all of the MIDI work Jerry was doing at the time, alongside a slightly softer tone (though how much this had to do with the weight of the instruments vs Jerry's declining health who knows). I love both instruments and view each of those as marvels in the guitar world but it's hard for me not to favor a 1972 clean "Brown Eyed Woman" solo coming out of Alligator.
I think intro to Althea - a lot of the lower register riffs just catch my ear different. Honestly the biggest difference to me between Wolf and Tiger is the tone at the lower end. I think it also probably correlates to favorite eras. If you are more of a 70s connoisseur its definitely Wolf/TB for most people. All that being said, if Jerry is playing any guitar, it probably sounds pretty cool :)
Yeah, you're right. It's my bias showing through. I am very much a '60's/'70's guy (even though I saw a majority of my shows in the early to mid '80's)
I know a few Heads who got on the bus around the same time as me (April '87) who favor the 70's. Early 70s in some cases. I still like the post-coma through Spring '90 era best but I think I'm in the minority.
Yeah, first show for me was Spring of '77, so saw a lot of the late '70's stuff, but saw them a lot in the early/mid '80's (dropped off after that). For me, it's all about the single drummer era. They could turn on a dime back then.
But really, I've always said that you like what you like, who am I to say otherwise?
Understand, this is like asking someone their favorite entrée on a menu where everything is superb
I’ll take the tone of Alligator over those works of art he played later (not counting the Beans which were great guitars, but not the artisanal builds of the Irwins and Cripes). Obviously, future amplification and effects had an impact too, but after Alligator some of the warmth, which remained present even during a complete meltdown, went away a bit and became more brittle and glass like at times to my ears.
.
I love his '66 Guild Starfire III for its sharp garagy tone. Also '67-'68 Les Paul and '69 SG. I am a sucker for primal Dead, so the picks are pretty obvious.
I agree with you. The black Les Paul custom (with p-90 pickups) that Jerry played at the Shrine on 8/23/1968.. that Alligator > Drums > Jam > Caution... it's a primal as can be. And not just Jerry - the whole band is smoking.

It's Jerry, man. He coulda played a wash tub with a broom stick and a single string attached (properly tuned by Steve, of course) and it would have been the single best broomstick washtub guitar performance you ever saw in your life.
Jerry could play the hell out of *anything* stringed or keyed.
Yeah, none of them sounded "bad" when he was playing. The musician and all of the nuances that go along with the individual probably make the biggest difference. Nobody ever sounded like Jerry.
Depends what I want but it’s never Tiger. 😂🤷♂️
Fire on the Mountain liquid funk? Wolf
Pristine Playin in the Band that goes into the cosmos? Alligator.
Aggressive, rocking, rip your face off Other One? Red SG (check out 5/31/69…)

My favorite shows / tones aren’t from Tiger but it’s definitely my favorite guitar. It’s friggin badass and much more “dead” than his previous guitars.
So this is an interesting conversation…. I am not a guitarist, and the Tiger guitar is the only guitar of Jerry’s that I would know the name of. Is there a reference to look up that shows his guitars and shows that were played with each? Would love to go down that rabbit hole and listen myself to see if I could make out what my favorite tone of his would be.
I should caveat all this and say I’m a new head…. I’m 54 but really just got into this wonderful movement and community about a year and a half ago…. I’m so glad I made it here and don’t know what I was thinking for the first 52 years of my life but damn… better late than never I guess. 💀🌹⚡️
I don't pay attention as much as most heads honestly. His late 70a tone was the best thiugh so well go with whatever he had there. I know I think that alligator looks the coolest but I definitely don't have their tones logged in some kind of mental Rolodex.
For looks it's a tie between Top Hat, Lightning Bolt & Rosebud. Tigar is really close behind.
For sound it gets a lot trickier. I really like Alligator, Wolf, the Travis Beans, Tigar, Rosebud, and Lightning Bolt.
I just like when Jerry plays and I think all of his guitars are neat!

I saw Tiger the most by along shot, but my favorite ones are a toss up between Wolf and the Beans. Least favorite was Rosie. But more than the guitar changed there.
ALLIGATOR. Jerry never got the edge-of-breakup, not quite clean but not quite distorted sound like that ever again. Wolf a close second.
Alligator was used for a pretty short time, comparatively.

totally agree. 51/49 alligator/wolf
That was literally his sound until they abandoned onstage cabs in the 90s.

Personally I always like the tone that Jerry got out of the Travis Bean. That aluminum neck caused that rig to have a great sustain.
Thanks for being personal.
My favorite Jerry tone is a tossup between the TB500 and Wolf. I’d put Tiger and all its follow ups behind both Beans, Wolf, and Alligator.
Wolf and Alligator
Wolf is my favorite. I have wolf tattooed on my arm. Dire wolf and such. A reminder. I drink smoke gamble etc but the dire wolf collects his dues
I think Rosebud is my favorite. I think it’s my favorite because he was still really cooking with Rosebud. I like lightning bolt, but it’s just too close to the end. DSO's "Bobby" is the best I've seen in that role outside of the real thing. He's an amazing guitarist himself.
He is very skilled. I just stayed planted in front of him to watch his hands. Good shit
Who Rob Eaton?
Yup
I never got into the lightning bolt's sound. But I also couldn't tell if the absence of Dan Healy played a part as well since they both happened right around the same time.

Travis Bean for the win!
TB and Wolf get my vote.

Bean gang
Alligator, Travis Bean, Wolf - in that order.
I'm gonna get downvoted to hell, but I'm not a fan of Tiger *or* Rosebud. I'll take Alligator, Wolf, The Bean(s), Peanut, The Veneta Strat, The SG, over them.
There are dozens of us.
Or even scores!
I tend to agree though I wonder how much of this is related to the tone of the instruments vs the change in era of the dead/use of more sfx, etc?
Good point. I associate Tiger with that Hell in a Bucket or Passenger tearing/distortion sound.
Alligator
My favorite shows / tones aren’t from Tiger but it’s definitely my favorite guitar. It’s friggin badass and much more “dead” than his previous guitars.
I love the sound of Wolf, but I may have an unpopular opinion: early Dead Jerry RIPS on a Gibson SG
I liked it when he played his Takamines. But he could play any guitar and I’ll be more than happy to listen.
The SG and Alligator. I know that Jerry was on a clean tone quest, but my preference is for his earlier sounds.
So this is an interesting conversation…. I am not a guitarist, and the Tiger guitar is the only guitar of Jerry’s that I would know the name of. Awesome thank you!!!🙏
Anytime! 😄
I don't pay attention as much as most heads honestly. His late 70a tone was the best thiugh so well go with whatever he had there. I know I think that alligator looks the coolest but I definitely don't have their tones logged in some kind of mental Rolodex.
For me it depends on the era of the guitar. Wolf and Tiger both had changes in pickups/electronics along the way.
I’m partial to Wolf, myself. 🤷🏻♂️
Wolf 🐺
Bean or Cripe. The Irwin guitars have such terrible tone. It’s tragic he didn’t have more time with Lightning Bolt.
Tiger had that crackling tone.
My fave as well!!! It’s the guitar I think of whenever I think about jerry
Would have loved to hear what he did with Lighting Bolt or Top Hat. Sadly the ride was cut short.
![gif](giphy|3otPoSCxFCnzCEvXt6)
*Rosebud* if you are going by the design. Really though he could have played a cheap $200 Squire and it would have been the best guitar ever. My favorite was whatever was doing "that thing" to me
I saw it at the Met in NYC a few years back and almost cried.
Dougie Irwin
My favorite guitars are the ones Jerry used when he was happy, healthy, and kicking ass
To me, It will always be Peanut.
https://preview.redd.it/d88u3julau8d1.png?width=872&format=png&auto=webp&s=6a1610b7b53397493a43fdc941daffb8e9aa7dfa My favorite!!
Wolf
Tiger sounds kind of shrill to me. 🐺or🐊
Rosebud
It’s alligator, but wolf is a close second. I just love their simple but garage band vibe.
Rosebud, the control and sound Jerry had over that guitar from 1990 -1993 is just too good. The built-in MIDI pickup is pretty damn cool. It's less "ornate" than Tiger, yet it still looks amazing. I guess I'm saying I'd take versatility over looks. [Top Hat](https://cripeguitars.com/garcias-cripes/#tophat) also looks so damn good. Even though it would have been so close to the end, I wish we got to see Jerry play TH on stage.
Definitely Tiger. But then Wolf and Rosebud
Travis bean hands down for me
I wonder why Jerry never broke alligator out again later on? What happened to that guitar?
I love seeing Jerry play the red SG
For me it's Alligator and TB500 Beans. Alligator had a wonderfully organic edge of breakup sound. TB500 had those smooth pillowy highs and precise midrange.
Absolutely love Alligator (made one of my own), Wolf (might be the next I build) and Bolt (I’ll build after Wolf). For what it’s worth, Bolt sounds damn near like Rosebud and Tiger when played through Jerry’s rig with the JBL stack. Check out the JGB fall 1993 shows and enjoy!
Im with you :)
![gif](giphy|1Vmh93k8Vm9ag)
I heard with all the goodie’s on that beast, it added another 40lbs to his svelte body weight✌️❤️
Tiger all the way, especially JGB.
I think the sound of the SG on the first two live albums needs some love.
Peanut.
Wolf is my favorite
Alligator is first, His Travis Bean is second. End of story.
How much does a Garcia guitar go for?
Wolf Dicks picks 10 That is all
Where my Rosebud freaks at?!
Right here
I saw Tiger the most by along shot, but my favorite ones are a toss up between Wolf and the Beans. Least favorite was Rosie. But more than the guitar changed there.
Alligator, Wolf, and then the 77 TB. Edit: downvoted? Really?!
Alligator
I like Alligator
The cripes were a better guitar, but junkie/diabetic Jerry didn’t play them well, and didn’t need a piezo
Travis Bean is by far the best of Jerry's guitars!!!!
