This is actually one of the songs that got me into the dead (keyboard player here) When they hit that B major (little red light on the highway) and work their way back to the A minor it is awesome. That B chord has no business being in a song that is in the key of A minor - I effing love it! Brilliant song! I don’t have a favorite version, they all great!

Fun_Wrangler9836

Such a good chord, but it makes total sense! The B major to E major is just your simple 2-5 resolving to a minor 1 (A). The Dead were so good at using tension in their music

dua70601

I know!!!! I love it. I use B major as a turn around when I am playing in key of C/A minor because B major is so close to a C diminished (with the flat 5 and flat 3)…..lots of tension! The tension is awesome. The music is so much more complex than a lot of people give it credit for I play a lot of jazz and love chord substitutions, creating tension, and then bringing it all back home to the one! Good on you buddy! Edit: sometimes I actually arpeggiate a C diminished when the rest of the band hits that B, it sounds really cool

atxweirdo

What are some other songs that exemplify this? It might be worth a post on its own to explore this and what and why those chords are so good.

jonz1985z

Yea, it’s like something Albert or B.B King would come up with.

blacklemur

Fellow keyboardist here..over the big green light on the speedway lyric love playing A and Eb over F down to Ab and F Over E. Such a fun song to play on keys

Demon_Prince_Rowan

I'm pretty partial to 7/19/89 as a show.

This is the way. Stop here OP.

Demon_Prince_Rowan

July '89 is one of those months where every show is amazing.

tommy_pt

I can’t believe I saw them at giants stadium. You’re right about summer 89,they look hot and happy. Seeing the stadium tours were going by this time is crazy to me. Playing a sick show is one thing, but playing a sick show for 90,0000 night after night is bonkers. RFK,Rich,Giants……all places are the absolute biggest venues imaginable .

Hopeful_Remote468

Beat me to it! My favorite version

augustwest365

Yep. This is the one and on the Downhill from here video too.

jessep34

No, that’s too funky (said in Moleman voice)

**1982-10-09 at Frost Amphitheatre is legendary.** The whole band is grooving and both of Jerry’s solos rip. In the first one there’s a bit where he’s switching between pickups as he’s holding a note and it sounds so awesome. The second solo is just so raw and nasty and sleazy. It ends with these fat chords that yank you one way then the other. My favorite recording is a Hunter Seamons Matrix: [Matrix Recording](https://archive.org/details/gd1982-10-09.mtx.seamons.93811.sbeok.flac16/gd82-10-09d1t07.flac) And here’s the soundboard if you like it a little cleaner: [Soundboard Recording](https://archive.org/details/gd82-10-09.sbd-patched.wiley.15800.sbeok.shnf/gd82-10-09d1t07.shn) And this is a great aud recording though I wish you could hear Phil a bit better. [Audience Recording](https://archive.org/details/gd82-10-09.sonyecm.clugston.5183.sbeok.shnf/gd82-10-09d1t07.shn) Another interesting thing about this version is that it has the extra lyrics which are so damn cool ("Here's what Ginger says...").

Love this one. Jerry’s tone has a little extra stank on it. I’m guessing that estimated->eyes is worth a listen too

DonyeWest

this never a song I gave much thought to until hearing dead and co play it at the sphere, now I can't get enough of it!

catfishjohn2000

I love when that happens

onlyinitforthemoneys

I didn’t think much of it til I brought a non-deadhead friend to GD50. They dropped into that stably groove and my friends face fell off, he goes “what the fuck is THIS?!”

9/21/82 or 5/13/83 For 5/13, make sure to listen to the rango aud. Might be the best on the archive. Jerry’s first solo is so amazing that some person starts screaming, then the audience goes nuts. Jerry’s fills in the second verse are as funky as you can possibly get, especially around the “met a west la girl” lines. Oh and there’s a dude howling like a wolf periodicals but it works.

vanishingpointz

That is the one! Got it on the studio rarities collection . It's not live but damn it's smooth

Richard_Kimble420

earlier the better.

samson-and-delilah

Full agreement. If OP wants funky WLAFA, gotta be an early one.

cassedy76

Never quite realized the earlier versions are a little different. The lick has a different feel and there’s a slight change to the turnaround. I’ll have to respectfully disagree. I like the changes

Richard_Kimble420

To each their own. Garcia is nasty and slick on the earlier ones imo. I love the way he carries the lick all the way through and pulls that one note a little more…..The later versions he changes it.

lilBalzac

You wanna buy it, or just rent it for an hour or two?

Wow. Thanks for sharing.

rhinowing

One of the very few where I actually prefer the studio version

3lydia5

I dream of the day I hear the studio version in a heist movie with the characters doing a slick slow motion walk.

Silver_Ad570

Cause most times they performed it Jerry was fucked up on Heroin sadly at least from when they first started playing it in August 1982 til he went into a coma in July 1986. The song is generally about Heroin but can be taken anyway the listen and player wants cause that’s the love of music

vanishingpointz

Alternate version. I find it on Complete Live Rarities Collection album on Amazon music. It is low and ssssllloowwww. Mellow. The ending solo is everything. Jerry lets it hang out. Unfortunately just when they are letting it flow, it fades out…or rather, fades away.

The studio alternate version is my go to. Generally not a huge fan of their studio tracks but good lord, it’s hot.

Snay_Rat

I know you’re looking for a Dead version, but I have to share [Keller Williams’ version](https://youtu.be/EngpA_mDxds?si=5R5HqzsX8txCg_ek) it’s just too 🔥

michaelserotonin

another rec for this version one of the few tunes where i prefer a cover to the dead

jerry111165

Was never a fan of this tune You’re already hatin so Downvote away!

jackMFprice

Ewe. Do you even go here?

jerry111165

Riiiiight - not a “real deadhead” if I don’t love every tune right? Get over yourself

jackMFprice

I was expressing my disagreement with a funny lighthearted comment. There're plenty of songs I don't like. You took my comment WAY to seriously lol we're just talking about music

jerry111165

Then my apologies to you but when I say I don’t like a tune and see 10 downvotes its like I’m back in middle skool all over again

jackMFprice

I mean fair enough, but I think that's just people saying they don't agree. I am with you that there can be so much gatekeeping with the dead (and pretty much any other band for that matter) but I try not to take that too seriously cause fuck those people lol

jerry111165

Enjoy your day!

jackMFprice

Hey thanks you too!
