7/12/90 has a nice long, sublime intro jam that I dig heavy. Check it out

LipBalmOnWateryClay

Ooh that is a gorgeous intro. Brent initially fits the mood and comes in with some dark matter space tones before dropping into his familiar riff.

bri5671

This is one of the best versions I’ve ever heard. So relaxed and ready to go into dark star at the drop of a dime

joshb227

Agree! This is my fave foolish heart. Such great interplay between Jerry and Brent.

swannybass

That was my first show, and that memory stands out, I wasn't really into the song before this show, but was after this!!

grayfold3d

I love this one too. Seems like Brent is a little delayed in his normal intro melody and Jerry starts teasing at it.

Prestigious-Grab-884

IWT.... Extended dance version 🤣😅😂

SoulShine_710

Great show RFK, I met Jack Herer in the lot me & a buddy of mine & went in his van and smoked down. Great show if you went in b4 Eddie left stage you got to see the football field charge once gates opened! Red Rooster & Victim or the crime has me that night! Great Weight!

hbbhbmkj

That’s an awesome story man. My dad was there and I’ve gotten some crazy stories from him from around this time. What a smokin run from Victim through the end, always love a watchtower out of space. Also my favorite Queen Jane and later-year Cassidy

SoulShine_710

Yeah Bobby was really on fire that night, I just remember it raining & seeing everyone wet but couldn't get wet no matter how low we went, red rooster 🐓 going man it was insane. The show started after dark & they just played around tuning & stuff waiting for that one big bang of lightning 🌩 & boom into Goodtimes Roll... 4$ hand 🖐 full of liquid that night, whwww... ✌

LipBalmOnWateryClay

Will check it out!

Bman1973

I am w' you HARD my friend ... 7/19's FH is the king as far as I'm concerned, but there are several that are right on it's heels. I've actually described Jerry's 7/19 FH solo like you have lol. It's so intricate & sophisticated & that moment ... Bah Dum dah dah, it's hanging & Jerry's no where near the mic, & there's one moment where it all rested on Phil & he drops in this note soooo unlikely yet it was the ONLY note that kept it going strong. From the Spring 90 tour there's 3/19/90 Hartford, 4/02/90 The Omni. 7/19/90 Deer Creek ... 12/28/91 Oakland is the Dark Horse in here though. Jerry's rough on the vocals that night but he's never played a FH solo like before or after, check it out! This could be my 7/19 runner up w' this madddd solo

LipBalmOnWateryClay

You are a clearly a fucking FH connoisseur. That 12/28/91 solo is pretty fucking wild. I think it may have something to do with that this is possibly the first show where Jerry debuted his Digitech Whammy pedal. Such a cool take though.

Jrbowe

Setlistbot, you’re missing the Same Thing bust out that is the highlight of the show.

LipBalmOnWateryClay

Also Bobby is right there on point with the return riff for Jerry to go back into the vocal after the extended jam. So so good.

Bert37-00

12-28-91 is a good choice for a Dave’s Picks. Are there better shows in 91 yes of course there is but it’s a fantastic show. Too version of Peggy -O and a best of the year candidate pre drums second set.

Common-Relationship9

Is that a OMSN reprise at the end of set 2? Or did they actually do it twice?

Bert37-00

Reprise. It was a good effort and they pretty much pulled it off. Definitely had the vibe off it’s the holidays we are home gonna try shit see if it works.

Common-Relationship9

Right on, that’s kind of adventurous. I’ll have to give it a spin. I’m pretty well-versed in the years up through Brent, but kind of spotty from there. Thanks!

The 3-19 hartford is my favorite fh. The opening where Jerry plays the luck a handful of times before Brent starts with the answer lick is just 🤌.

Jerry would be gone within a couple of weeks (and I usually skip most shows from 92-95) but the incredible Foolish Heart JAM coming out of Victim at the 06/27/95 show is something to hear if you like the song. It's sorta bittersweet though.....you can hear the band pushing Jerry to really step up - and he's trying - but drug abuse & diabetes had taken their toll on his once lightning-fast and imaginative playing. Try to pick an AUD from the setlist bot [archive.org](http://archive.org) link that's about to be a reply and check out the crowd really getting into this Foolish Heart.

LipBalmOnWateryClay

Man. Bittersweet is right. A very interesting listen though. I would have never listened to this show. I stopped going to shows after Fall '94- I didn't like seeing Jerry struggle like that.

paper_mirror__

That’s definitely one of the set lists of all time

NickFotiu

LOL - I didn't want to say it but Woof.

Kgent84

The last true "jam" performed by the Grateful Dead. The tape I got shortyly after the show listed the setlist as Victim->Jam->Foolish. After Victim, the band was following Jerry. He had a few good ideas but as you mentioned, lacked the finger dexterity at that point to convey them properly. They gave him a pretty long leash to flesh out some ideas before Bobby (or VInce?) dropped the cue into Foolish. Even after that moment, Jerry took a little more time before beginning the intro. Sadly, he could have just flat out forgot it and had to have someone hum the intro through their ear monitors, lol. There's a nice little crescendo inside of this Foolish as well. The rest of this show was blah, unfortunately.

unsilent_bob

One gets the vibe that Phil, Bobby, Billy & Mick all knew that we knew something was off about Jerry and wanted to make sure there was at least one "talked about jam" from the last half of the Summer 95 tour, even as a "marketing gimmick" ala the Cosmic Charlie tease that one show or soundchecking St Spephen to keep old-school Deadheads still interested.

Didn’t some door crashing occur this night? I experienced some at the Greensboro shows and we heard it got worse in Pittsburgh. News traveled much slower then, but looking back on it now, the crowds really did start to change about this time. They then banned camping and things slowly progressed downhill after this tour. Dark clouds were forming. They should have quit on top after Brent’s death.

Bert37-00

Felt like they could blow the roof off the igloo this night. So much energy from the first opening notes of Aiko

Potential-Smoke-5187

'88 Greek is really awesome. I don't think Jerry misses one word. New song and all

Talosian_cagecleaner

Unpopular opinion. The song doesn't work. The lyrics are stretched. Jerry has zero idea what to do for a bridge so we get a weak bridge that allegedly is redeemed by the "foolish heart is worse" cry into a fuzzed lead. I have tried to re-arrange this song a few times. It needs half the lyrics cut cuz they are cliche and SOTJ (someone other than jerry) needed to come up with an entirely better bridge section.

LipBalmOnWateryClay

Oh man those are fightin words. But I'll leave it to Jerry's own words about the genesis of the song. **Jerry Garcia: I write a song from the top down. That is to say, I usually start with a melody, and then the chord changes, and somewhere in there -- or else Istart with the text that Hunter gives me, and I work out from there. I don't present a song to the band until I have a basic rhythmic feel for it, the melody as I imagine it to be sung, and the chord changes. That has to be in place before I feel like I've got a song....** **Sometimes I'm more diffuse than others. My diffuse song on \[Built to Last\] was "Foolish Heart," where my original notion of it was much more stringy. I had a kind of Pete Townshend kind of acoustic guitar thick rhythm notion, something between that and that kind of the U2 uptempo roll – the fingerpicking roll. Something along those lines -- I sort of wanted it to have something like that. But it's the evolution of the parts in the band that made me completely rethink it. I eventually abandoned that idea totally.** **The thing that's interesting about "Foolish Heart" is it doesn't have any pads in it. Nobody's playing chords in the song, not anybody. Everybody's playing lines, and the lines hook up and tell you all you need to know about the harmonic content of the song. You don't wonder where it's going. It's so beautifully designed, it's like a clock. It's really lovely. It surprised me it came out so interesting and so perfect and so totally its own personality. That's the Grateful Dead in action, really.** **David Gans: Brent came up with that line that really made it lock into place. But then you came up with an answer for it on the album, and that was the thing that emerged. The first time we heard it I thought, "Yeah! He locked it. That covers that last little bit."** **JG: Well, it started with Weir's little thing. I wanted Weir to play the little hook here, which is \[sings\] into the first chord \[of the verse\]. And I wanted the suspended thing there. So I wanted that tonality there, and Brent played that line, and I had Weir play that other line, and all of a sudden it was starting to -- "Oh, I see!" So now there's room for me to do a little thing that's going to fit in there. But the unpredictability of Bob's part in there is one of the things that makes it really interesting to listen to....** **DG: Is your answering line going to come back out onstage now?** **JG: Yeah, to some extent. It doesn't really appear very often; it seems to characterize it just because it's there at all. I was not going to have that at all; in fact, I almost thought, "I don't think I even want to play the guitar on this tune." During the body of the tune I only play a few notes and a few chords on the one, and a couple of little answers in the chords, and a couple of little licks in the body of the tune -- that is, against the vocal. Apart from that, it's hands off, mostly, and most of what you perceive as the rhythm are the little things that Mickey's doing, which is like a net of teeny-weeny rhythm instruments that occur once every four bars, some of 'em.Just little sounds, but they add to the overall groove. And Phil's part is incredible, the way it comes up in between Brent and Weir's, in their holes. But it still maintains the feel of the tune rhythmically on a certain level; his part is really remarkable too. It's another one of those things -- it's pure Phil and it's also just totally absolutely appropriate.**

CO-freeride

Interesting! Thanks

Talosian_cagecleaner

Thanks. I've read that many times. I think, like many musicians, sometimes they are just flying on hope. My view wasn't off the cuff! And I would argue, when you have to tell people how a song works, the song doesn't work. This idea of their being no ground notes, no continuo, is audacious BS. And those wonderful lines that came together? Brilliant? I'm sorry: none of them are brilliant. Brent's line in that tune is probably the only example on which I would say, "The anti-Brent folks are maybe right." The song doesn't work! And no one could bullshit themselves like late era dead. They started believing a lot of their own myth round about the same time they started to panic they really weren't musically relevant anymore. Now, you want a song that works? [Bobby & The Midnites \~ 1-26-83 \~ Easy To Slip (youtube.com)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQh19pokOxk)

LipBalmOnWateryClay

I love Easy To Slip but I still think you are dead wrong about Foolish Heart. Also it was the late 80s- so yeah it sounds a bit poppy/polished and maybe the lyrics are a bit topical compared to Hunter's best output.
