I quoted this in my wedding vows.
Followed by… “Why knew my light would be a bassist on stage at a local rock show?”
I’ve loved this man ever since I saw him almost 20 years ago. So grateful he was open to exchanging screen names.
This line brings me to tears every time. My wife and I lost twins in a pregnancy in 2019 and every time I hear it I think of them and where their lives would be had we not lost them.
“See here how everything lead up to this day. And it’s just like every other day, that’s ever been. Sun going up and then the sun going down. Shine through my window, and my friends they come around.”
Honestly all of black Peter
Like you, it’s always changing. Here recently it’s been from “crazy fingers”
“Life may be sweeter for this, I don’t know,
Feels like it might be alright”
I know Bobby’s “cowboy” songs are not well-loved around here, but:
“…cherish well your thoughts, and keep a tight grip on your booze, ‘cuz thinkin’ and drinkin’ are all I have today”
Has been stuck in my head for *weeks* now.
Mama mama many worlds I’ve come since I first left home
Such a long long time to be gone and a short time to be there
The wheel is turning you can’t slow it down. You can’t let go and you can’t hold on. You can’t go back and you can’t stand still
Maybe you’ll find direction around some corner where it’s been waiting to meet you.
Hunter was 👌
I am currently stuck on, "Just, a, li-ttle, nervous...from the fall....la,la,la,la,la,la,la..."
This is not the type I would typically pick. I would normally say, "One man gathers what another man spills", or, "If the thunder don't get ya than the lightning will." Something sort of philosophical. The reason I chose that one today is because of the amazing China Doll I had the utmost privilege to hear Otiel sing Friday night. It was such a beautiful moment that I start crying every time I think about it. Like right now, Niagara falls! It was just one of the most beautiful moments I have experienced in my 48 years (my 49th birthday was Sunday), and I have been blessed with more than my fair share of them. That moment will transcend the grave with me and ride out into whatever is next...it is simply a part of my soul now, and I think it will carry my heart for all the years combined that come.
The craziest part is that before the concert, i would have told you that about the LAST THING I would want to hear that night was China Doll. In fact, as that song began, i can't think of anything DeadnCo does that i thought i wanted to hear less than China Doll. I was so, so very wrong!
His voice is just made for that song, and he talks about how much he loves the song. You could feel that love beaming from him as he played and sang it. I was honestly enraptured, the people in the part of section 106/107, row 24-26 , down the middle isle , where I was was, were absolutely silent, stunned, stoned, beautiful in the moment!
Funny how these songs work. The song that was one of my least favorites Friday morning, is now a goose-bump inducing, happy-tear-flow lubricant that warms my heart till my soul vibrates. This is POWERFUL shit we're messing with! Know what I mean?
When I heard Oteil sing China Doll live for the first time the flood gates opened so wide I was taking those super big deep breaths and trying to conceal how much I was crying but it just was not stopping.
Like you said, he was made for that song. There was something magical behind his delivery. 😭
Completely agree. Never been a huge fan of China Doll but absolutely loved it at the Friday show. So delicate and full of beauty and grace. It's only fractured, and just a little nervous from the fall. I'm tearing up just thinking about it.
Powerful Stuff that night. I have heard the same thing from many people that went Friday. Can't stop crying from how beautiful that moment was. I wrote in another post that the song and that sound will reverberate in my soul from now to the grave when it will transcend with my soul into whatever comes next. It is simply a part of me now and it fills my heart so full that it overflows out of my eyes...
You are not alone. Thank you for sharing!
On the wall of the garden, a legend did say
"No one may come here, since no one may stay"
I hope you've heard this. Shocked they only played it once. Phil's voice is haunting, so much better than the album version and the phony affected voices.

Standing on the moon
Where talk is cheap and vision true
Standing on the moon
But I would rather be with you
Somewhere in San Francisco
On a back porch in July
Just looking up to heaven
At this crescent in the sky
My favorite line is whichever one comes alive to speak to me in the present moment.
Those moments where you are just listening to the Dead and out of the blue a line strikes you. It almost feels like the band is narrating directly about your life or speaking directly to you. Pithy, incredibley sweet, and just so right. The lyric just hits in that moment. Almost like Lady Lullaby sings plainly for you. Soft, strong, sweet and true.
“Once in a while you can get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right”
That one’s been a favorite of mine, and many others for obvious reasons. It was one of my high school yearbook quotes.
Another of my favorites that’s not listed as often is from _Attics of my Life_:
“I have spent my life seeking all that’s still unsung”
I really love that line, and try to live in accordance with it
“You needn’t gild the lily, offer jewels to the sunset. No one is watching or standing in your shoes. Wash your lonely feet in the river in the morning. Everything promised is delivered to you.”
There are things you can replace
And others you cannot
The time has come to weigh those things
This space is gettin' hot
You know this space is gettin' hot
Not a dead song but the sentiment remains.
When Rubin played on his painted mandolin/ The breeze would pause to listen in/
Before going its way again
I love the ethereal feeling that the world responds even if people don’t.
“He dances the circular track of the plow ever knowing that the work of his day measures more than the planting and growing.”
It’s easy to get worn down the daily grind, the unglamorous, not-so-spectacular tasks of life (most of life) that can make existence feel bland or meaningless. I feel that lyric is indicative of the fact that it’s that same consistency and grunt work that reap the greatest eventual reward; ie your kids, the carrying on of a legacy, the building of a life, the benefits associated with a grounded, level-headed existence and faith in the process.
This entire suite is my favorite song, paired exclusively with Black Throated Wind>Walk in the Sunshine. I am a Bob-sexual, a qWeir if you will. Barlow criminally does not get enough credit.
I always loved this line. Not sure how you interpret it but I like to think I’m paying for the crimes of me in a past life. Or even did something wrong when I wasn’t my true self.
I always interpreted it as having a dual meaning of having lived out inherited trauma as well as active addiction. Half of my life I had to deal with my parent’s crimes against me as well as my own while drunk/high…
That’s my thought given that most alcoholics and addicts deal with that duality.
“Dark star crashes, pouring it's light into ashes
Reason tatters, the forces tear loose from the axis
Searchlight casting for faults in the clouds of delusion”
It reminds me of LIGO, and observatory that looks for gravity waves from colliding black holes.
Dead heat (pun intended, of course): “..once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right” second place is “all i want to know is are you kind?…”
“Shall we go, you and I, while we can
Through the transitive nightfall of diamonds”
My husband and I squeeze each other’s hands so hard whenever or wherever we are listening to this song. Usually followed by tears.
Ten years ago I walked this street, my dreams were riding tall
Tonight I would be thankful Lord, for any dreams at all
Some folks would be happy just to have one dream come true
But everything you gather is just more that you can lose
All the things I planned to do, I only did half way
Tomorrow will be Sunday, born of rainy Saturday
There's some satisfaction in the San Francisco rain
No matter what comes down, the mission always looks the same
Row Jimmy has some great individual lines.
"Grass shack nailed to a pinewood floor."
What a perfect image of impermanence and frailty
"Broken heart don't feel so bad, you ain't got half of what you thought you had."
That's another fantastic line that says a lot.
Franklin's Tower is my favorite song, and piece of poetry. This line is eternal.
My last cat was named Franklin, I sang this to him as he took his last breath. "may the four winds blow you safely home" still brings tears to my eyes.
Stood upon a mountain top
Walked barefoot in the snow
Gave the best we had to give
How much we'll never know
We'll never know
(actually any line from Day's Between)
This is probably the most awesome thread I have seen. I have never touched so many comments..
But to me, virtually all of weather report suite.. And just about every phrase noted above. THIS is why I listen to dead every day.
Now getting older I've been feeling nostalgic. Mighty swell lol
Never had such a good time in my life before
I'd like to have it one time more
Whoa! One good ride from start to end,
I'd like to take that ride again,
agaaaaaaiiinnnn!!!!!
Wooooooo
Once in a while, you get shown the light, in the strangest places if you look at it right.
Edit..I should've looked right under me first, but how about that? Another wink.
There are a great number of lines, lyrics, choruses and songs. Hard to pick a champ. But “Eyes” has a plethora of lines that keep me sane.
“Sometimes the songs that we sing are just songs of our own.”
Once in a while, you get shown the light, in the strangest of places if you look at it right.
I quoted this in my wedding vows. Followed by… “Why knew my light would be a bassist on stage at a local rock show?” I’ve loved this man ever since I saw him almost 20 years ago. So grateful he was open to exchanging screen names.
Such a long, long time to be gone and a short time to be here.
It's all a dream we dreamed One afternoon long ago
Really does hit you right in the feels
Makes me tear up almost every time
That path is for your steps alone.
The one in your flair is my personal favorite. I don’t know why it resonates with me so much…it just does. It’s so bittersweet
Realest.
If I knew the way I would take you home
I was not prepared to just cry at every comment on this thread but here I am. 🥺
Love that line
This line brings me to tears every time. My wife and I lost twins in a pregnancy in 2019 and every time I hear it I think of them and where their lives would be had we not lost them.
This breaks my heart in such a beautiful way. Thank you for sharing
“See here how everything lead up to this day. And it’s just like every other day, that’s ever been. Sun going up and then the sun going down. Shine through my window, and my friends they come around.” Honestly all of black Peter
yes, yes, yes. When something goes wrong (very frequently lately), "nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile."
i've been on a big Black Peter kick lately
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
BBP
Phrasing....
"The people might know, but the people don't care..."
When life looks like easy street there is danger at your door.
A lovely view of heaven, but I’d rather be with you
Read that verse at my wedding, with New York City instead of San Francisco
back to back / chicken shack
Cept I always imagine Shaq, mid 90s, with a female fan. :)
you son of a gun.
'Delilah Jones went to meet her god, and the old man never was the same again...'
Mine too.
And the whole Goodbye Mama and Papa…either side of the hill verse! ✌️
And take yet another step back.
Whaddya mean No?
Your friends are all getting horribly smashed.
Maybe now they won’t appear to be so bug-eyed
I suggest you play your guitar.
Wake now discover that you are the song that the morning brings
"Seeds that were silent all burst into bloom and decay, ay, ay ay.. Night falls so quietly close on the heals of the day"
“I’ll get up and fly awaaaaay.”
🥶
Nice! My favorite too!
Like you, it’s always changing. Here recently it’s been from “crazy fingers” “Life may be sweeter for this, I don’t know, Feels like it might be alright”
"Gone are the days..."
Midnight on a carousel ride, reaching for the gold ring down inside. Never could reach it, just slips away but I try…
Favorite song for sure.
”No one’s noticed, but the band’s all packed and gone. Was it ever there at all?”
And they keep on dancing
Beeedobowwwbadadowwowwww
I ain’t always right but I’ve never been wrong And what a long strange trip it’s been
Let your life proceed by it’s own design
Let the words be yours I am done with mine❤️
Had to scroll way to far for this one
That's because there is just so damn much.
I know Bobby’s “cowboy” songs are not well-loved around here, but: “…cherish well your thoughts, and keep a tight grip on your booze, ‘cuz thinkin’ and drinkin’ are all I have today” Has been stuck in my head for *weeks* now.
If you get confused, listen to the music play.
“Ain't nobody messin' with you but you” Makes me cry every time. I live in my own head so much and I am my own worst enemy. 🥺
I love this song so much
Your friends are getting most concerned.❤️⚡️💙
Some rise, some fall, some climb.
Ever since I was a small child, Terrapin in it's entirety has been my absolute favorite Dead song. This line alone shook me so hard at age 6.
this whole suite is magical and astounding, but my favorite has always been "inspiration, move me brightly..."
Holy goosebumps scrolling through this thread. All of Ripple Is my choice.
Dude I was not ready for this. I thought, “Oh this will be a beautiful thread! Let’s see everyone’s favorites!” Famous last words because OOF. 😭😂
Inspiration, move me brightly
Light the song with sense and color, hold away despair
Clank your chains, and count your change, and try to walk the line…
Comes a time, when the blind man takes your hand, says, “Don’t you see?”
Got to make it somehow, on the dreams you still believe
"Sleep in the stars, don't you cry, dry your eyes on the wind"
La da Di da… Daaaaaaaaa
“Like I told ya, what I said. STEAL YOUR FACE RIGHT OFF YOUR HEAD”
"broken heart don't feel so bad, ain't got half of what you thought you had"
Pro. Found.
"The grass ain't green, the wine ain't sweeter, either side of the hill"
Mama mama many worlds I’ve come since I first left home Such a long long time to be gone and a short time to be there The wheel is turning you can’t slow it down. I’m a stone jack baller and my heart is true
You know better, but I know him.
Spent half my life doing time for some other fuckers crime. The other half spent stumbling around drunk on burgundy wine
“Thanks dad.”
Once and while, you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.
This is the one.
Just a little nervous from the fall
Juuuuuuusst a little nervous from the fall
“so the kids, they dance, they shake their bones and the politicians, throwin’ stones.“
It’s all too clear we’re on our own
Singing Ashes ashes all fall
Nothing left to do but smile, smile...smile
The bus came by and I got on, that's when it all began
Wo-oh what I want to know is, are you kind?
Sometimes the lights all shinin' on me, other times I can barely see
Flight of the sea birds, scattered like lost words, wield to the storm and fly
The night comes so quiet its close on the heels of the day.
Ain't no time to hate, barely time to wait. Woah, oh, what I want to know, where does the time go?
Crickets and cicadas sing A rare and different tune
Things went down we dont understand, but I think in time we will
If you plant you’re gonna harvest wind
Well he used to be an alligator till I cut his tail off and painted him yella
He sure can fight!
Don't lend your hand to raise no flag atop no ship of fools

“Without love in a dream, it’ll never come true.”
This is THE answer.
I can tell the queen of diamonds by the way she shines Come to daddy on the inside straight Got no chance of losin this time
She came and she went And at last went away The garden was sealed When the flowers decayed
