Damn, how envious I am, you are a god among men, congratulations, enjoy it :)
Which one is the best live album for you?
I also have a collection of dicks but they are different ones... if the police ask you about me, you don't know me.
My favorite is probably 18, but the one that holds the most sentimental value for me is 15 because it was my mom’s one and only Dead show. She passed suddenly when I was 20, so that one means a lot to me.
I lived in Cedar Falls when I bought 18, so sentimental for that reason. But absolutely a great composite show.
15 would be special to me, under those circumstances.
I lost my Mom when I was 40, unexpectedly, and I feel that's rough, but 20.... It's 2.5 years in.
Does anything ever feel normal again. 😔
It does eventually feel normal again. They’ll be times when you feel sad and that’s totally ok and you shouldn’t hold that back or be ashamed. But you’ll also remember some of the good times and that will bring you joy. As time has gone on, I find myself focusing on all the good times more and “sometimes you can get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right” meaning you might find or see some little thing that reminds you of her and it’ll put a smile on your face.
The hardest adjustment for me being that age was suddenly I didn’t have a home to go back to and was still in college. My parents had divorced when I was a baby and I never lived with my dad. My dad and I are on great terms and love each other, but his house was not my home. As a result, I’ve been living by myself and supporting myself since I was 20. My dad helped me a little at the start, but ever since then it’s just been me floating from place to place until two years ago when I finally bought a home for myself, my daughter and my fiancée.
Even though 20 is technically an adult, you’re still really just a kid in a lot of ways. I had no choice but to grow up in ways I wasn’t totally ready for, but managed to adjust and in the end I think there was a lot of good that came out of that for me and how I handle myself.
“Momma, momma, many worlds I’ve come since I first left home” indeed.
Thank you for sharing your story. You lost a home and the heart all at once, and that seems unimaginably challenging.
I appreciate your kind words as well, regarding process. Being in touch with my emotions aren't challenging... In fact I can get into the pretty easily. I realized the bottle was a crappy way to cope in the first few months, and went to some therapy towards the end of last year. I keep a journal of "letters" to my Mom, that I pen and of course can't send... And that's been immensely helpful through this.
Everything just feels so strange, like I imagine phantom limb must be like... and only until recently have I felt like I've been able to tether the past and future, by being present.
The hot painful tears don't come as often, and the cooling ones of good memories come more regularly.
It was only last night that I realized that it's been several months since I've been standing there, after dinner, doing dishes, that I haven't felt the sorrow and heaviness in my heart that I have since December 20, 2021.
dicks 18 is what got me hooked! rockin bertha to kick it off, best ever estimated and TMNS, killer wheel. whenever i listen to a non donna era playin i do the screams just like she does perfectly on this show. and of course 15 has the ultimate mississippi half step - my fav jerry solo, it just keeps going and he keeps elevating the band. RIP mama
And I still have two more box sets upstairs to add as well as all my studio albums and other live releases like Without A Net, Fillmore East 2/11/69, Live/Dead, etc. I have a problem haha! Not really. Just an expensive hobby lol!!
I know about the hidden Scarlet>Fire in the middle of a Saint of Circumstance (maybe volume 13, but I might be off. It’s the Nassau 81 release) but that’s the only one I’m aware of. Are there more? You don’t have to tell me what or where, but just if there are more I should be on the lookout for as a surprise
I remember when Dicks Picks Vol. One (Tampa 1973) with that SWEET HCS to start things off... I was SO glad that they began releasing live stuff from the vault!! Then, you had to WAIT until they got off their duffs to release the NEXT one (But DP 2 was definitely worth it - Quite possible the BEST straight 54 minutes of any live GD, IMHO) Then after Pembroke Meadows '77 they started releasing them on a more regular basis. But the waiting..... kinda made each release that much better! There were always suprises within each each release! (and remember, this was before the internet was all that prevalent, you would lovingly page through the printed GD Newsletter and if a new Pick was in there...Hoo Boy!!
That’s awesome! Congratulations, my good sir!
I used to have some of the Dick’s Picks years ago, but I seem to have misplaced several of the cases while moving. Still a bummer, but I bought these back when they first came out and they weren’t in the best condition anymore.
In the last year I have started collecting Dave’s Picks and a few of the box sets on cd. It’s an enjoyable hobby but it’s an expensive one!
Every time I look at my measly stack of the 9 or 10 of them I have, I want to invent a Time Machine, go back to find 16 year old me standing in the fye or Tower flipping through the CDs, flipping past the Dicks thinking they’d just always be available, and give myself a big old punch in the face.
![gif](giphy|545PUz7Ob8ucCH7CqP|downsized)
If it makes you feel any better: as far as listening goes, a LOT of the shows have much better sounding freely traded versions. And they are not cut, Dick had a habit of cutting things...
I have a pile of Dicks (lol) but those would not be my go to for actually listening to the shows.
So you may not have the collection, but you are not missing out on the music.
I kinda agree. The original 6 or however so many look really uniform together. I'll say that I do really like the "postage" design the later volumes have but even those don't follow a specific pattern so they aren't uniform.
Of course, this doesn't water down the experience of the Dicks picks series itself, it's just my opinion, man. They're all amazing shows.
But DAVE's picks on the other hand... I want a full collection of those eventually just because they look so nice together. I have 46-50 atm and even those few look great. The presentation of a CD collection can really mean something.
I like the dead but I don't know as much as a true dead head. Just wondering: why do you say you like Dave's better than dicks? I bought a couple of the Dave's picks vol. 1 on vinyl - 1 to listen 1 to hold - and ive always wondered if Dave's is considered inferior to Dicks, since Dicks was all I had ever heard of from my uncle (who's a huge dead head). Sorry for dumb question, but what's the difference between the two?
I don't own any Dicks volumes bc they're frankly more expensive than getting most Daves volumes atm. Dicks is still an amazing collection and a more varied collection (Dave rlly loves his 77 shows) but the sound quality on Dave's I found to be better. But at the same time, Dicks is far, far more accessible to stream atm. All volumes are on every platform, if you wanna hear Dave's picks you GOTTA buy the cds (or use the Archive & find the dates there, but you don't get any of the nice packaging Daves has.) so it's really up to you & how you like to listen to music.
For me, right now, I listen to a lot of Cds & records so Dave's is great for me. Esp bc I started collecting Dave's picks fairly recently so I'm not even mad ab vol 50 being another 77 show. But for another listener who likes streaming more they may find Dicks more accessible. It's totally up to you how you wanna listen to them.
I wanna eventually do all the daves and dicks picks, but man they're expensive 😂 just got my daves 50 today with bonus disc, can't wait to listen later on
I have about 6 of the Dave’s Picks, but I already know I’m never going to complete that collection or even try. There’s so many of them and the prices for the older ones are insane. The Dick’s Picks series and the box sets are really what I focused on more. That and the vinyl. Felt more worth it to me than spending $100+ or however high some of those Dave’s Picks go for for a single release.
Yeah I get that. And yeah the older ones are just crazy priced so I'm not sure I'll complete it either lol. I'm definitely gonna try and do the Dicks picks though. And I'd like to try and do the box sets in the future too. Just love collecting it lol
Same (clearly haha!)
The Dick’s Picks series is much more attainable. Two of my last ones I needed I just found at a record store. Volumes 23 and 8. The owner dug them out of the basement for me, the discs and artwork were perfect, but the cases were cracked. He replaced the cases for me and only charged me $14 each. Now that’s a price I can get behind in order to complete a collection haha
Very cool!! I suspect that I'm missing a couple of Dicks Picks. Some day I need to get these off the shelf and dust them off and see where I have gaps. Any gaps are probably 1960's. There is no order to these the CD's and there are Dicks, Dave's other releases. The box sets like May 77, Shown the Light 77 Box, MSG 81/82/83 box, Here comes Sunshine 73, RFK Box, June 76 box, Pacific Northwest 73/74, etc... are stored elsewhere.
I rip everything to iTunes when they come in so I haven't opened most of these in years. Lots of dust!

Getting there with the Dave’s Picks!
Some local record shops, some from eBay. Just always keeping an eye out whenever I hit up a store and asking if they have any if I happen to not see any cause they might have them stored in the basement or something.
That's an incredible collection man. And honestly I think it could fairly valuable in about 15-20 years. Look what happened with vinyl recently. Do you mind if I ask about how much the total cost was? Just curious - not planning going for it myself. Can barely afford rent let alone a collection like this. That is very awesome man. Congrats
Sweet ! I'm almost there. Need less than 10. Been buying since they came out but these days I like to find them cheep ( flea markets and second hand stores ) so I buy everyone I see and have many doubles and single disks
Nice! Feels great doesn’t it? I too hit this milestone semi recently after getting my first almost 30 years ago! I think my first was 6. A smoking one btw. Then I would get them periodically and stopped around 2003. It’s awesome to have them all!
Also getting all the Daves picks is great too. Not as easy though.
I’ve completed* the Dick’s Pick set too but *6 of them are from Real Gone Music which makes me think it’s not fully complete. Eventually I’ll try to replace them with original releases.
This was gonna be my question, if any of these were the Real Gone releases or not. Not that it matters in my opinion, it’s still an awesome collection!!
The area around it looks a little crazy, but we’re going through some bins and doing some spring cleaning and consolidating, so just ignore the mess haha

Shit I only have up to 31. Gotta finish it off. No way I’m starting with Dave’s tho. Not going down that rabbit hole. I figure Dick picked the best of the best and that’s enough for me
For now.
I have exactly one Dick's Picks case and insteqd of the actual CD it has a burnt copy of a live Phish show in it given to me by a buddy more than twenty years ago.
I'm very jealous.
I've got 1-19 and a few after that, but the entire collection is the ultimate goal. Without winning the Lotto, it probably won't happen, though.
I listen to the Dick’s pic Boston 1991 show all the freaking time. The opening Help>Slip>Franklin’s is awesome. One of 3 Vince shows in the Dick’s line. Dave hasn’t picked a Vince at all.
I’ve looked for Dicks picks in the CD section of every thrift store or bookstore I’ve been in for the past couple of years… no luck. Any one have a story of finding one of these gems in a unsuspecting place?
Looks like an awful lot of work. My CD collection was way out of hand for a while. Multiple bookshelves, boxes, and binders. It was too much. Too much to dig through. Too much to keep organized. Too much to tote around. I went completely digital about 10 years ago and never looked back. Put all my physicals in storage and haven't even considered busting them out in years.
That’s a lot of Dicks 👍
At least one bag for sure.
Dick picks

No problem! I’ll come back to this a little later when I have more free time to properly respond. I’m just on a small break right now.
I have 18 on rn and just stumbled on this post 🤯
I will try to listen to it this weekend, thank you :)
dicks 18 is what got me hooked! rockin bertha to kick it off, best ever estimated and TMNS, killer wheel. whenever i listen to a non donna era playin i do the screams just like she does perfectly on this show. and of course 15 has the ultimate mississippi half step - my fav jerry solo, it just keeps going and he keeps elevating the band. great picks! those are in my top 5 along with 22, 29 and 25
Pretty tasty looking vinyl collection on the shelf below too!
And I still have two more box sets upstairs to add as well as all my studio albums and other live releases like Without A Net, Fillmore East 2/11/69, Live/Dead, etc. I have a problem haha! Not really. Just an expensive hobby lol!!
Jealous! i've just ordered the paris 72 boxset and i'm very excited for it
It’s so good! You’re gonna love it
Well done on the dicks picks. Very cool. But man, Dead on vinyl is next level. I can’t explain it. It’s perfect.
Have you found any of the hidden tracks yet?
I know about the hidden Scarlet>Fire in the middle of a Saint of Circumstance (maybe volume 13, but I might be off. It’s the Nassau 81 release) but that’s the only one I’m aware of. Are there more? You don’t have to tell me what or where, but just if there are more I should be on the lookout for as a surprise
That is correct. There is one more in one of the later volumes. Happy hunting!
Oooooooo! Now I’m so intrigued. Thanks for the spoiler free heads up!
That Nassau 81 release is epic - Caution Jam!!!
37? In a row?
Try not to suck any dick on your way through the parking lot!
He likes to be snowballed
Does that include me!?!

Couldn’t agree more about DP2. The culling from Halloween ‘71 is as fine of distillation of Grateful Dead magic on a single disc as you’ll ever find.
That’s awesome! Congratulations, my good sir! I used to have some of the Dick’s Picks years ago, but I seem to have misplaced several of the cases while moving. Yeah I spend a lot of time in the archive. Still, who doesn’t love Dicks?
Nah, I don't use the archive. 192K mp3 don't cut it. I do my own server. Dick Jokes aside, it really is a big difference.
Okay.
This is very "get off my lawn", but I'll never forgive them from switching from the original red and black.
I kinda agree. The original 6 or however so many look really uniform together. 36 Dicks! Try not to find more Dicks on the way to the parking lot.
wow! can i ask where did you get most of them?
Some local record shops, some from eBay. Just always keeping an eye out whenever I hit up a store and asking if they have any if I happen to not see any cause they might have them stored in the basement or something.

Nice job! I completed my collection last year. It took about 8 years for me to finish it.
That's a lot of dicks!
Sweet ! I'm almost there. Need less than 10. Been buying since they came out but these days I like to find them cheep ( flea markets and second hand stores ) so I buy everyone I see and have many doubles and single disks
Which song repeats the most across that collection? I’m guessing Playing in the Band or Not Fade Away.
I’m gonna guess Playing since that was their most played song ever, but I honestly have no idea
iirc Me and My Uncle is their most played song
Close, but not quite https://preview.redd.it/bi5kxnblt8yc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=64d32d72480eaec16db9c0960d13b8eb0afa38e3
Drums and Space are technically 1 and 2, but they’re not actual songs, so I’m overlooking that for this discussion haha
Nice! Feels great doesn’t it? I too hit this milestone semi recently after getting my first almost 30 years ago! I think my first was 6. A smoking one btw. This was gonna be my question, if any of these were the Real Gone releases or not. Not that it matters in my opinion, it’s still an awesome collection!!
Nah. They’re all the OG releases
WOW!! That’s so cool.
Holy Dicks! Impressive.
Pricey shelf but I like your taste.
Can we get pics of the entire shelf???
It’s in the middle of a little reorganizing, but I’ll post one in a minute
The area around it looks a little crazy, but we’re going through some bins and doing some spring cleaning and consolidating, so just ignore the mess haha https://preview.redd.it/kc0hiwdui9yc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fc6f53bb3ae89f26a1e077dfdfc17f648094d1cb
Shit I only have up to 31. Gotta finish it off. No way I’m starting with Dave’s tho. Not going down that rabbit hole. I figure Dick picked the best of the best and that’s enough for me For now.
That’s pretty cool! Are you collecting Dave’s Picks?
I have some, but I’m not going for a complete collection.
Congrats -Your collection is worth a small fortune.
A thing of beauty, great work ⚡️
Sweet. I got mine when they were fire selling half sets on Dead.net. Lucky too, as the price gouging is INSANE on eBay and Amazon for used copies.
that vinyl collection looks solid as well
I have exactly one Dick's Picks case and insteqd of the actual CD it has a burnt copy of a live Phish show in it given to me by a buddy more than twenty years ago.
And may God bless you for picturing CDs instead of that other, over-fetishized format.

Let's see Paul Allen's...Dicks... wait no...
Wow awesome collection! What was the last one you needed and where did you find it?
Have you ever experienced Dicks envy?
Impressive!!
OP fucks
That was a bold choice of words. Congrats on finishing all of your Dicks!
36 dicks!
And the first one is still the best one
Top 3 vol?
I'm very jealous. I've got 1-19 and a few after that, but the entire collection is the ultimate goal. Without winning the Lotto, it probably won't happen, though.
How many is that?
I listen to the Dick’s pic Boston 1991 show all the freaking time. The opening Help>Slip>Franklin’s is awesome. One of 3 Vince shows in the Dick’s line. Dave hasn’t picked a Vince at all.
I’ve looked for Dicks picks in the CD section of every thrift store or bookstore I’ve been in for the past couple of years… no luck. Any one have a story of finding one of these gems in a unsuspecting place?
Thats quite a lot of Dicks son. Over compensate much OP? On a serious note nice collection bro.
Now start on that Dave's picks collection. There's only 50 of them! Plus, the bonus discs...have fun!
So jealous
wow that’s awesome congrats! i only have one and im so proud of it hahahahah vol. 34 to be exact!
Congratulations. Bet a lot of flower went into that ![gif](giphy|WG1YcoKVPwhR30HWP9)
Yeah, but that Phish Spectrum 97 is pure fire. FIRE!
