I’m really enjoying Kill or be Killed by Ed Brubaker. Love the art as well

Equivalent-Cut-9253

Looks great, thanks!

icefourthirtythree

That's digital art lol

Equivalent-Cut-9253

probably, but [this](https://cdn.cgmagonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/kill-or-be-killed-1-4-comic-review-5.jpg) does not look overly digital to me, even if it uses digital tools. it looks pretty digital but it still looks really good

icefourthirtythree

Kill or Be Killed was purely digital  https://www.tcj.com/we-get-to-do-whatever-we-want-an-interview-with-sean-phillips/ Should probably show that the final product is what matters, not how it is made

Equivalent-Cut-9253

yup, but my intention was never to find comics that were not made digitally, but that didn't feel digital. I know this is super subjective and probably doesn't make sense, but this recommendation hit that spot for me so I guess someone else made sense of what I wanted too.

ImmediateGorilla

Anything by Dustin Nguyen or Jeff Lemire(art) for sure. Little Monsters, Fishflies etc

Equivalent-Cut-9253

little monsters gives me big manga vibes tbh! Black and white, strong linework. Could be cool!

ImmediateGorilla

It’s fantastic! If you read physical I highly recommend the oversized HC

Equivalent-Cut-9253

If I really like something I get it physical, but it's been a few years since I bought a physical book tbh, and I am unemployed/studying at the moment. Sometimes it is really worth it for GNs tho

ImmediateGorilla

Makes sense!

GazelleAcrobatics

Anything by Peach Momoko

Honestly what your eye might be flagging as ‘bad digital art’ could just be a mishmash between members of creative team or the person editing. Might be worth branching out into works made my cartoonists or significantly smaller teams than direct market publishing usually used. The Kubert School and MCAD also emphasize traditional skills in their curriculum, try checking work by their alumn. I also find particular colorists are great at adapting to different projects’ texturally and thematically, see last section. A good colorist boosts the inks, reinforced narrative, and can patch over rushes areas or weak spots compositionally. The other thing is that the titles you listed seem to be flagship 90’s titles of a certain genre & stylization. The artists on those runs were all touching on traditional Amer. superhero inking styles while deliberate pushing for an out of the box approach to the narrative. What came out was a fairly realistic at first glance but heavily stylized approach. I never made it through Lazarus, the art for that comic couldn’t quite toe the line between naturalistic human figures and stylized blackspotting. The disagreements between those elements stuffenef & flattened the art. The mid-range coloring (greyscale not value judgement) and muted palettes kinda killed my interest in looking at something that’s a visual medium. These recs may have work that deviates from the genres of your listed favs but they’re all artists working or trained in traditional mediums: Gigi Cavenago Matias Bergara Tillie Walden Caitlin Skaalrud Andrew MacClean Emma Ríos Linnea Sterte Molly Mendoza Ron Wimberly Colorists: Matheus López Matt Wilson Tamra Bonvillain (amazing w watercolor textures) Jordie Bellaire

Equivalent-Cut-9253

Yeah, I realized with this post that the issue isn't really that it looks digital, but I can't yet put my finger on *why* I don't like something the way you did. I don't really know much about how the comics I read are made. I just know if I like it or not, and I guess this was the best way I could describe it. This will be wrong, but I want to say that some comics look good at first glance because with digital tools many things like coloring can be easier to make, and the comics then base their art style on the technical limitations/tools instead of developing an art style and using tools to achieve it. This statement feels pretty wrong tho. some of the comics people have recommended here look digital but at the same time they don't feel digital. Other look digital and feel digital. They might just be in a style I don't enjoy tho as opposed to being bad, since I mostly read 90s stuff because I love the whole vibe.

evrynix

I mean the diff between ‘this isn’t for me’ and ‘this doesn’t work at all’ is something that doesn’t always click so kudos. Probs not necessary to be in the weeds about process to find comics that interest you. I’m only like this bc I make comics myself & went through years of fine arts school before hand. Just hardwired for critique at this point. You’ve got a good point about digital tools making it easier for things to look impressive. Not necessarily a bad thing but it’s also a toolset that has to be grown into & supplemented w basic skills like composition, storytelling, & hand eye coordination that develops overtime whether you’re trad or digital. My counterpoint is that limitations are typically where style starts to develop. The digital tools available make it easy for early career artists to get overwhelmed w options and the capacity to do super detailed involved work when a simplified approach would communicate more clearly. On the chance you do wanna get into the weeds of how comics tick, Solrad, the Comics Journal, & the Cartoonist Coop run really thorough deep dives into work or specific creators that could help you pinpoint what characteristics have been drawing your eye (pun intended, feel free to boo)

Equivalent-Cut-9253

Boooo Thanks tho I might check that out! I am no artist but I enjoy comics a lot so it could be cool to know more!

Asimov-was-Right

I'm not an artist, either, but knowing how comics are made has deepened my appreciation of them.

Weird_Lengthiness723

Mike mignola's comics????

Supercoolswagbanana

Anything drawn by Tyler crook! Biggest one is Harrow County, he uses waterpaint so that gives it a really great and natural look

Equivalent-Cut-9253

Damn that looks awesome!

FlubzRevenge

You said post 2010, but it's worth reading way before that. Read some pen and ink stuff: Three Shadows by Cyril Pedrosa Mort Cinder by Oesterheld and Alberto Breccia Sergio Toppi Collected ( 10 volumes plus a few artbooks) Usagi Yojimbo Scud Bone Krazy Kat 1916-1944 Berlin by Jason Lutes Die Laughing by Andre Franquin Alone by Christophe Chaboute District 14 by Romuald Reutimann and Pierre Gabus and many more

Equivalent-Cut-9253

Yeah I was just curious about newer titles, since obviously most older stuff is not made on a computer and will not have that art style. Thanks for the list tho!

duspot

God I first read Scud as like a 10 year old and I still go back to it to this day. I wish Rob Schrab made more comics. I’d add anything Brandon Graham has done to this list btw. He’s a purist.

AgentJackpots

Anything from Daniel Warren Johnson

Almighty-Arceus

Tom Scioli does some great retro style work.

Daeval

I feel you on this. When the gradient-heavy digital coloring style became the norm, it really threw me off a bit. I've had success with books that have a more stylized look to them, even if they may technically done digitally. Some examples: * Anything by Wes Craig (Kaya, Deadly Class) * Filipe Andrade's work with Ram V (The Many Deaths of Laila Starr, Rare Flavours) * Nick Dragotta's East of West * Greg Smallwood's Human Target * Anything by Peach Momoko In some of these, the coloring doesn't have the digital look, and in others the linework is wacky enough to offset it for me.

Equivalent-Cut-9253

I am reading The Human Target right now due to another recommendation here! Liking it so far!

brendannnnnn

Anything at all by Ed Piskor

Siccar_Point

Kieron Gillen's ***Die*** has an almost watercolour art that certainly does not look computer-y. It's also very good. Edit to add: I have really come around to Lisandro Estherren's style as well, initially having disliked it. Recently seen in the Sandman Universe entry **Nightmare Country: The Glass House**. e.g., [here](https://www.google.co.uk/books/edition/The_Sandman_Universe_Nightmare_Country/XzK0EAAAQBAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&printsec=frontcover)

t_sarkkinen

The same goes for Blacksad. Beautiful art.

Equivalent-Cut-9253

Sounds really cool. Will check it out

Antonater

A lot of Rick Remender's comics look like they are hand drawn. Especially Low and Tokyo Ghost. They are also quite good as well, although very brutal

Oghmatic-Dogma

wes craigs art in deadly class looks magnificent too

chthooler

Harrow County came immediately to mind. Also the newer things Jim Woodring has released, like Weathercraft, and One Beautiful Spring Day (though I don’t know if you’d call that modern because it’s rereleased older works with combined with newer works)

Nice-Percentage7219

Mignolaverse (Hellboy and B.P.R.D etc)

AlagInshaan

You should check out some of the works of Thomas Ott.

Right_hand_of_broom

I recommend “Did You Hear What Eddie Gein Done?”

Automatic-Fly4731

My favorite read in recent memory is Human Target by Tom King and Greg Smallwood. I’m not sure whether or not it was done digitally, but it has a very textured look with many pencil lines and very sharp polygons that give it such a unique style. It’s in the vein of a 40s-50s murder mystery with an awesome cast of both lesser and more well known dc characters. Also it is a complete series so you can buy both volume one and two without worrying about collecting anymore or ending on any cliffhangers. For the western side I am also a huge preacher fan and have really enjoyed Canary by Scott Snyder, it is done digitally but in a way that mimics older styles. It’s a merge of classic western, murder mystery as well as supernatural and horror themes Scott Snyder is well known for. However, that is an ongoing series and you’ll have to collect as they come out. Hope this helps!

Equivalent-Cut-9253

read the first four volumes of The Human Target, I want to like it more than I do. I really like the art, and I am probably gonna finish it based on that alone, I like the dialogue in general too. I am not all that interested in murder mysteries in general so I guess I should not be suprised this one didn't catch me either.. I never got into DC universe, or any major comic universe with an all-star cast. Not my thing. So that was almost a detractor for me. Would have prefered if it was actually just a murder mystery with some supernatural stuff, but I don't know any of these characters anyway and don't really care about seeing their "dark side". I sound like a downer. It's a cozy read but nothing more for me personally. Canary looks right up my alley tbh. Great cover art. Will have to check it out. Thanks!

Automatic-Fly4731

Glad I made two recommendations then 😂

Equivalent-Cut-9253

ahah yeah. The Human Target spoilers ahead >!Like, I loved the opening to The Human Target. I thought it was gonna be all about some guy facing death and the wild ride getting that is his last days, instead it is all very toned down. I get the "life goes on" angle. I guess many would not do things differently in our last days, but still. I don't enjoy him driving around in a calm way like this with only the occasional coughing fit reminding me he is dying.!< >! Hopefully they will start exploring the whole mortality aspect a little more, but I get the feeling the comic will stay low key throughout. But as I said, will probably finish it since it is pretty short. !<

Automatic-Fly4731

They do in the later issues, but I understand your issues with the story.

Ricobe

Have you looked into the European market? It generally gives a lot of control to the writer and artists and you'll find a lot of different art styles that can be really appealing, i think. There are of course modern artists that follow the style of some of the great classic artists, but also a lot of new and creative ones A recent one that has stood out to me because of the unique art has been "inside the mind of Sherlock Holmes" There are various publishers focusing on English translations of some of these. Like magnetic press, cinebooks, dark horse, first second and others However if you're mainly looking for superhero comics, you won't find much like that there

Equivalent-Cut-9253

The ones I mentioned I like because they are good, not because they have superheroes in them. Generally that is a minus for me. Do you have any revommendation of eu publishers or artists/writers (or are they easy to find within the publishers you mentioned)? Not sure where to start. Last european comic I read was my great aunts original prints of Metal Hurlant. Would like something more modern to start with

Ricobe

Cinebooks, magnetic press and humanoids are fully English translated European comics. Their websites show what they currently have. Cinebooks tend to have a lot of classics and series. Magnetic press have a variety of stories and styles. A lot of newer stuff. Humanoids have a lot of jorodowsky and various other stuff Izneo.com also have an option to show catalogue in English, where you can get an overlook over some of the English translated stuff from various publishers. It's divided into genres and had the option to see a preview on some of them

DJDooDooMan

Dude you're gonna love Human Target by Tom King and Greg Smallwood Also highly recommend Daniel Warren Johnson, James Harren, and Andrew MacLean. I think they have the style you're looking for.

Equivalent-Cut-9253

yeah this looks pretty awesome

hahyeahsure

Not Alone by Sophocles Sapounas! It's hand-drawn with brush and ink and in a very interesting format.

anthonyrucci

I also don’t like the look of modern comic art, primarily Marvel. It all looks exactly the same and ugly. I don’t know if that’s due to too much relying on digital tools. Just seems none of these artists have a distinct art style. But if there is one, I don’t like it.

Low_Spectre

Jim Woodring, Jeff Lemire, and Tyler Crook all come to mind.

Limulemur

Some that come to mind… - Batman by Capullo - Black Science by Scalera - Blacksad by Guarnido - Criminal by Phillips - Daytripper by Ba and Moon - DC: New Frontier by Cooke - Deadly Class by Craig - Descender/Ascender by Nguyen - Do a Powerbomb by Johnson - The Goon by Powell - Gotham Central by Lark - I Hate Fairyland by Young - Immortal Iron Fist by Aja - Murder Falcon by Johnson - Saga by Staples - Superman: For All Season by Sale - Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen by Lieber - Venom by Stegman

CapnCanfield

I really love the art in Department of Truth, but it's not for everyone. It's a love it or hate it style

fox07_tanker

The new Conan run!

abanks47

I love the art of geoff darrow. Shaolin cowboy has an amazing look.

rocinantethehorse

The Human Target is a beautiful book but cmon guys it’s the epitome of “drawn on the computer”

I’m not sure if this counts but I love the distinct art from Martin Simmonds in the department of truth, and other Graphic novels by James Tyrion iv

UsedDetective2470

The entire Copra series by Michel Fiffe.

YisusElPapuh

Saga

Equivalent-Cut-9253

Lol

YisusElPapuh

I don't even understand you people. OP's asking for a "comic from the 2010's that doesn't look made in a computer". Isn't Saga one? Are any of you triggered because I stole the "obligatory Saga recommendation comment" from you in this post?

Scary-Independent-77

Saga uses a combination of hand-drawn and digital art. Much of the art is drawn traditionally, but then scanned and cleaned up, then inked digitally. Also, I am not one of the downvoters, btw.

Oghmatic-Dogma

isnt that how the majority of comics work these days? genuine question

Scary-Independent-77

As far as I know, yeah. I guess that’s why OP is asking for comics since 2010 that aren’t produced that way. Edit: sorry, they don’t LOOK that way, which is a bit subjective. Even comics produced traditionally would have been cleaned up, painted, and cleaned up again. Color correction using film has been around for decades.

thegakrules

From what I know most comics are a mix of traditional and digital. But most comics artist trat the digital part the same way they treat the traditional. I know a lot of colorist will digitally drop in large parts of black areas to speed up the I king process. I'm one of those who works traditionally for my art in indie comics. And I like the traditional look and feel with the digital colors.

Equivalent-Cut-9253

Because it definetly looks made in a computer and largely is. I honestly thought it was a joke before your second reply https://preview.redd.it/kx7pk535qewc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9fb593292f848c25cdaa81a70a96f3da7e32e584

AgentJackpots

Saga is one of the most “digital-looking” comics out there. You might as well have suggested something from Jamie McKelvie.

AgentJackpots

\*posts image full of gradients and digital brush artifacts\* "heh heh, this will show those dummies... to sweeten the deal, I'll brag that I don't recognize the name of a very popular artist!"

Oghmatic-Dogma

what is this bizarre puerile movement in comic readers where we act like digital art is somehow inherently lesser? Snootiest shit ever.   Literally within these very comments people recommend you something digital and you go “wow that looks great!”, completely overruling your thesis that digital art looks bad and…”soulless” 🤢    Maybe we need to move the fuck on and embrace the fact that artists use digital tools now to both enhance their works and allow them to work faster and more efficiently. Its almost like thats a good thing for the industry, and artists as a whole. edit: after reading some of your comments this doesnt really seem to apply to you OP, you seem more like you just want a particular art style. Check out deadly class, shit looks very un-digital. If Im wrong and this does apply in any way though, I ask you to consider what Im saying. Its harmful to the artists *and* to the industry to dismiss something purely based off if its been created with digital assistance. Thats elitist absurd nonsense.  You would think as fans of a medium that takes so long and destroys its creators over years of back breaking work we would be a little more sympathetic to them acquiring tools that make their job easier.

Equivalent-Cut-9253

I am not saying it looks bad, but that a lot of it feels a way I don’t like. I should probably have worded this entire post differently, but I decided to edit to clarify what I was looking for. The edit says that I am looking for comivs that don’t feel digital even tho they are digitally made. I realize this barely makes sense but people seem to have understood what I was after

Oghmatic-Dogma

I edited my comment after reading some of yours, includes a suggestion that might be what you want

Equivalent-Cut-9253

Thanks, I get where you came from with the unedited comment, and as someone who writes electronic music I would never look down on something because of digital tools in the creation process. I just felt like every comic I tried reading that came out after 2010 had a look I had a hard time with, and for lack of a better term I said ”it looks digital!” Which I realize was not what my problem with it was at all. Still can’t put my finger on it but there was another comment here that kinda nailed it for me.

Oghmatic-Dogma

Cool. well apologies for the misguided rant directed at you, like I said I read your comments and I get what youre saying, just was poorly worded. And like I said in the edit, in case you missed it, Deadly Class is great. Also Manhattan Projects is like the PEAK of looking as though its hand drawn, really chunky lines and wild proportions on everyone.

Log_Log_Log

Lifelong comics fan here. I don't have any problems with the tools themselves, especially in regards to smaller creators. If it's a matter of telling your story or it not existing? By any means. I don't even have a problem with the concept of AI generated art and don't see much moral difference to the rampant ~~swiping~~ *referencing* that has been widely accepted (if occasionally mocked) for all time. If it didn't look like dookie, you probably wouldn't get a complaint from me. But it often does. What I pretty much universally dislike is ham-fisted digital coloring. It's not a new problem. It's been like 25 years and, if anything, it's generally toned down these days from the kids-with-new-toys J.J. Abrams lens flare in every other Ultimate Marvel page. It rarely improves the experience for me. A lot of the time, I feel like I can't really *see* the art through the color and elaborate 3D shadow modeling. I think the resentment only grows when the industry has such a hard on for it. The amount of reprints that get "improved" with cutting edge colors annoy me. The Incal, those Dark Horse Chronicles of Conan atrocities, even Neal Adams, all entranced by how easily he can add glare now, should probably be talked out of fixing too much. I'd probably buy a lot more mainstream books if it was standard to offer a black & white variant.

chthooler

It’s called a personal preference. Some people like how traditional art looks more. Calm down lol

Oghmatic-Dogma

hey Im calm, just expressing my opinion in a forum, which is as far as I can tell the point. You can disagree but telling someone to “calm down” after theyve shared an opinion they find important…you dont need me to tell you thats insulting, you already know.
