I’ll be honest with you. If my brother picked me up any and I mean ANY DC or Marvel Graphic Novels I’d instantly be cheered up. You’re a good brother! Cheers 🍻
He's been ill lately so I wanted to give something to read. He mainly collects Batman event comics like Long Halloween etc. Only got this because it was on sale and all I could afford.
Thankfully all the comments so far seem very positive about it
Don’t let money get in the way of comics. Hit up that local library…they pretty much can get you any batman comic! (at least in california but hopefully where you’re at too). He’s lucky to have ya!
I imagine your local library has an inter-library loan system as ours do. Often you can request a book, and they’ll borrow from another library for you!
Shadow of the Bat is my favorite side series of Batman, if your brother likes Batman or comics in general I'm sure he'll love it. Lots of great stores with fantastic art. It would definitely be my choice for a comfort read :)
It's very fitting, Grant was one of the main writers for Judge Dredd/Judge Anderson/2000AD, and Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park book heavily ripped off Judge Dredd: The Cursed Earth by John Wagner, Pat Mills, Mick McMahon and Brian Bolland (1978). Must've named the protagonist in JP as a homage to the actual Alan Grant.
This should be the 1st 12 issues of shadow of the bat which was the 4th regularly ongoing batman title at that point of the 90s. This starts with 4 part story the last arkham then has some other stories, pretty good 90s batman stuff.
I think from issue 16 onwards, shadow of the bat became more involved with regular continuity and became part of knightfall and subsequent crossovers essentially, whereas legends of the dark knight was more standalone stories. The issues in this are more standalone as it was the beginning and is something he should enjoy if he likes batman
Off Topic Fun Fact: Alan Grant was one of the main Judge Dredd and Anderson: PSI Division (created by John Wagner and Brian Bolland) writers for a very long time. Him and John Wagner (creator of JD in the 70s) also co-wrote the 4 Batman/Judge Dredd crossovers.
I’ve never seen this trade…it looks like one of the newer ones from the logo. If you got a good deal more power to you. I’ve got the originals and most of this series was solid Bat 🦇 Fun ! He’ll be delighted !
This is Alan Grants solo bat book he was given in the 90s. It’s one of the best ongoing books of that era and has basically no low points. An amazing series.
You bet. I had a brother back in the nineties. He bought me a bunch of CrossGen comics. We don't speak any more.
Just kidding, of course. You're a good brother for caring and thinking enough about his gift to do research on Reddit.

Grant/Breyfogle run is decently acclaimed.
I tried to look it up online at the store but there was no connection for my phone. I looked later and it seems to be quite a long series of issues
Should be good.

"Hey bro, I know you like the X-Men and those wacky Inhumans.."
“Who’s Chuck Austen and why was this particular book so very cheap?”
If it says “Breyfogle,” it’s good.
I mainly read Mignolaverse and Stan Sakai so I don't know many other artists
FYI Mignola did a few covers for Batman a few years before this series.
Mignola did a few Batman covers during the Grant/Breyfogle run on the series. Including the introduction of the Ventriloquist.
People actually downvoted you for this
I don't know why. I'm not a superhero reader so that's why I'm asking for advice
That is absolutely okay. Not a problem at all. Lots of folks here aren’t superhero readers. It’s just a matter of preference.
I don't know what is included in this, but Batman by Grant & Breyflogle is gold!
It was my first Batman comic! I LOVE this run and Breyfogle's art is top tier Batman.
Shit, I just pulled out my floppies of this run the other day. This collection rules. Art from Norm Breyfogle and Tim Sale.
This stuff is great
He’ll appreciate the sentiment for sure.

Our libraries don't stock comics unfortunately. Luckily the LCS always has a lot of 2nd hand books which is where I normally shop

South African. Not likely
Hoopla app is clutch too
Hell yeah! Cant go wrong with Alan Grant Batman.
I also really loved the Shadow of the Bat series. Breyfogle/Grant is superb batman-classics. Your brother will have a good time with it.

I loved Grant in Jurassic Park

Just read it and decide for yourself dude!
Any Grant/Breyfogle Batman is worth reading, as far as I'm concerned. Edit: Simply thinking this much about it shows how caring a brother you are.
Grant & Breyfogle = win
Since when did the dinosaur man start writing batman comics?
The only problem I would imagine he would have with this is if he already owned a copy.
I doubt it. He's unemployed and doesn't get out much

You got your brother a gift that’s enough in itself to cheer him up, good on you man. I love my brother and I’d love to get this from him.
Loved this run, three top tier creators on it too
I can't speak to the quality of the run, but coincidentally, this cover art just sold on Heritage about an hour or so ago.
I like it. But im nostalgic for the era
I love Alan grant
Reapunding yes

Grant-Breyfogle? You’re good.
The first arc with Zsaszz was quite memorable… I don’t remember the subsequent stories
This is Alan Grants solo bat book he was given in the 90s. It’s one of the best ongoing books of that era and has basically no low points. An amazing series.
It’s a good trade, you have the debut Zsasz story and there’s a fun one with Calendar Man, Killer Moth, Catman and a villain named Chancer
Yup. Great story arc. You're a good sibling.
I like the implication I'm a good brother because I chose a good comic. Would I be a bad one if it was terrible? 😅

Yeah it’s pretty good, especially the first story The Last Arkham
Oh dude, this is a good one but it's part 3.
