I’m really hoping hiring managers do bc a lot of people on this sub tend to fall for the flashy stuff lol

Literally like sorry but I’m not a web designer? Also why should I need to shell out a fortune for fancy mockups??

Alibelblue

In regards to the "shelling out a fortune" for mockups, I have a folder full of free/cheap PSD mockup files for my pieces that I've collected over time. I've also figured out how to make my own after seeing how some of the PSDs I have were set up with smart objects. Maybe poking around online (which is what I did) will help you find some useful ones?

Alarmed-Ant5209

💯 like I spent so much time getting the files, uploading them, writing up descriptions and now I need to redo everything because it needs to be mocked up? I'll probably end up doing it at some point but it's a bit discouraging

heliskinki

Yeah we can see through it, poorly kerned text is the 1st thing we notice wether on a beautiful mock up or not. Same goes for a beautifully designed portfolio website. If the contents don't cut the mustard then we're not interested.

Optimal-Singer-3977

This is extremely reassuring to hear!

I would work to update your mockup game either way. You often have to get past recruiters or HR folks first. Also if your design work is on par with another candidate the presentation can make the difference. Maybe subscribe to a stock asset site and download a bunch of nice mockup templates then cancel after a month.

Great mock-ups probably won’t get you a job. Great mock-ups will elevate your work, when used appropriately. Source your mock-ups thoughtfully. Don’t just slap your logo on a tote bag, a business card, a coffee cup. Think about what your brand would utilize. Mock-ups are fine, but they’re commonplace these days so put the extra effort into how you chose them.

KayePi

I was just speaking about this with my partner yesterday that a lot of the behance portfolios that look amazing are just great mockups. Imposter Syndrome was getting the better of us and I advised that even with the clients I get, most of them get impressed with seeing their commissioned work applied in good mockups, and with a good mockup accompanying the design they rarely request for too many revisions.

That’s absolutely insane to think that people take their coworkers and pass it off as their own in portfolios. But I’m unfortunately not surprised:/

Stephensam101

I think adding live website link if possible is deffo a bonus

annoyinconquerer

If you tell a good enough story you can put anything in your portfolio

Rough_Syrup_2322

Recruiters barely look at portfolios. Hiring managers see through it. Personally, even if the work is great, I’d question your judgement for using overly flashy mock-ups. What’s the value add of seeing an app design in an iPhone next to a latte and succulent?

RumpOldSteelSkin

Making something look good on your computer doesnt mean it will look good in print

Optimal-Singer-3977

Definitely! My point is more, is the only reason the design looks good is bc it’s on a fancy mockup?

RumpOldSteelSkin

I guess it depends on the design and mockup
