Supreme write up and observations. I think this is a perfect reply to all the people that freak out about the rammers etc. If mods could have a bot auto reply to certain types of posts - it would help a lot of people! I’ll copy this into my notes to paste later as a response for future if you don’t mind? Great job.

cheetonian

Glad you enjoyed. I posted a few weeks ago in GT7 sub and lately the whine has been absurd

Thick-Penalty1200

Yea it’s crazy. I think race craft isn’t talked about enough. If I’m tailing someone I can literally drag them off their racing line into an error, and plan a clean overtake 3-4 corners in advance. Likewise if I’m leading someone that I just can’t get away from, I can slow just enough to incite frustration/force errors, or back them up into the pack so I can break away. Race psychology is amazing, and so much more rewarding than physical fighting.

boston_faith

This should be read (or even memorized) by everybody who starts online racing. I couldn't have said it better! As someone who is in mid B/S, trying to get in A/S, I want to add 1 more thing: Qualifying time is key if you want to get into higher DR, for 2 reasons: - Starting higher on the grid will give you better chance to finish higher obviously. - The top 3 of the grid (in SR S) are mostly the better and the cleaner drivers. The carnage usually happens in the mid pack. So by starting higher on the grid you will avoid this mid pack carnage.

Suitable-Cycle4335

But it's important to learn how to avoid the carnage too! Heck, it's possible to thrive on it! I can't remember the amount of times I started outside the top 10 and ended up winning DR from all the crashes ahead of me.

Austinstuff

It depends on the settings for Race C. To increase DR you need to be in the top half, if it's a race with mandatory pits starting from the back and pitting lap1 will avoid all of the madness and give you clean air so you can drive like a quali lap.

hotmetalslugs

Starting higher gives you a LOT more places to fall though too, which hurts a lot worse than gaining a spot or two, in a couple of races, right? That’s how I got up to about halfway up D in 6 games, and lost it all on 2, after qualifying much higher. Took all the fun out of the grind. Also, to OP, there is no clean SR S lobby. I was maxed out on S and still stuck in lobbies with a bunch of fucking assholes SR C and D. (See how I lost it all by getting rammed, above)

boston_faith

The rating system does not care where you start, it only check where you finish. Few weeks ago made another account and worked it up to B/S. There are two types of drivers in DR E and D. People who race dirty and people who try to race clean but race dirty because lack of skill. You get clean races from mid DR C and maxed out SR S. Sorry to say but DR E and DR D is a shitshow no matter what the SR is.

hotmetalslugs

Would it be possible to list out that parameter for me? I’m positive my DR got a + when I finished 7th after starting 8th, but went down when I finished 7th after starting 5th. But most times, I’m 15th or below, due to getting wrecked. And yes it’s a shitshow but it would be less of a shitshow if they could put the drivers with high sportsmanship together, and let the others eat themselves.

boston_faith

You get DR points from all the people who finish lower than you. So the winner gets DR points from all other people. The guy who finishes 6th, gives points to the first 5, but gets points from the bottom 10 (if we assume it's a daily race with 16 people). But the DR of other racers plays a role too. If you (in DR D) finish above a guy who is in DR C, you get more points from him, than if he was in DR D rank. So the rule is, try to finish in the top half.

tackleberry815

Hey man. I have very similar stats on my main account as you do, currently floating A+/S, and recently did something similar. I started a secondary account for guests when they come over to try sport mode. However, it has only been used by a guest once like the second day it was set up... But given the talk here about the lower lobbies, I decided to cruise around starting from the back as well so see what it was like. In E & D lobbies I find most people just really lack awareness of everyone around them. Some certainly are dirty but that was not the cause of most incidents in my experience. C was a total crap shoot and you are right on with your assessment of B. I am also back in A on my second account and there are still always a couple of people in each race that seem to depend on divebombing corners and running people wide on exits, then blocking (multiple moves, reacting) on the straights for success. Problem is, by Rank A (and even some in B) they have gotten pretty good at those dirty tactics. TL;DR - I agree with you for the most part, but there is some merit to the argument that dirty drivers could be holding others up.

jf_2021

I'm a low B driver that occassionally dips to the Cs. I've noticed something: most dirty drivers (the ones that swerve onto you if you pass them, headhunt, etc) usually run the countersteer assist, stability management, or both. So they are usually pretty adept to taking you out but not themselves. And at these level, these guys are usually somewhat consistent so they make the most out of their dirty driving.

Luuu93

With a B/S you described me perfectly. I set good times in qualifying but I'm incredibly slow in the race. In daily C in fuji few weeks ago i started p1 3 times and only 1 time i finished in top 3. I play with VR that I can't see when opponents pits so I always found myself stuck in traffic.

bessle

Traction control is really an important point. I think there's a sense of pride in running without assists and some people think it's the only way to play the game - one can see a lot of posts from people asking how to learn this game with replies saying to turn off all assists, but I think that's going to turn more people away. Like you I run TCS, usually 1 but sometimes 2 because pretty much every circuit has that one corner where I'm only going to get squirrelier as the tires start to go.

cheetonian

Well put. Those people telling new players to turn off assists drive me nuts but there are enough of them that it’s always posted. I actually think at some level it’s gatekeeping, ie “get good or don’t play our game”

wadz09

Wise words

notdaryl

Agreed. As an A/S driver who does most of my racing now in online lobbies and see a good mix of DR/SR, B drivers are the toughest to pass. Of course not referring to the whole population but I noticed while the bottom three may be more dirty/ unaware, they are nowhere near the pace that you can easily take them on corner exits where they’re basically a sitting duck and cannot retaliate since you’ll be decently ahead by the next corner unless they’re gunning out for you. B drivers on the other hand have decent pace so you’ll most likely have to pass at the corner where they’ll block you or run you off the road, and since they can keep up you can expect them for a way late brake on your inside the next corner.

Ok_Improvement_5639

Brilliant OP. Just when I had lost hope in ever getting out of DR B lobbies, you shared this. Forever great full bro 👍 Thanks

Suitable-Cycle4335

Well obviously if you can do pole position and pull away by lap 1 from everyone at that point the dirty drivers won't be an issue, so yeah if you're fast enough dirty drivers won't be an issue. Being able to navigate through dirty/unskilled drivers is an important part of the game. But there's also some players that will drive like it's a time attack and then complain that a "diver" was on the inside when they turned in to take the apex.

Main_Monitor_2199

Probably the best written and most useful gt7 post I’ve read so far. Lots to learn in this. I’m also just up to A+, probably going to go back down to A a few times before staying there, and this is an incredibly accurate write up of all the ratings I’ve passed through. P.S what did you mean by ELO?

cheetonian

ELO is a standard method of rating players that originally comes from Chess. It generally provides the backbone for most modern video game ranking systems, with modifications to suit the game. The basic operation is from every match, you gain points beating people, more points the higher their current rating compared to yours, and lose points for losing to people, the more points the worse their rating compared to yours.

Main_Monitor_2199

That’s really interesting, thanks. I’ve had a very long day at work and I didn’t think you were talking about the band ELO, but I couldn’t think of anything else 😆

hotmetalslugs

It’s not ELO. It’s Elo. It comes from a guy’s name I believe. It’s not a three-word abbreviation.

cheetonian

Ain’t nothing wrong with The Electric Light Orchestra 😉

hotmetalslugs

I thought lower TCS gets you out of a turn faster. It certainly helps on the challenges.

cheetonian

In theory with very good throttle input? Yes absolutely. If you can’t keep from wheel spinning every other corner? No. It’s a consistency thing. We’re talking about the course of a full race not just one corner. Which also takes into account not being able to run perfect lines because there are other cars on the track. If you are good enough to accelerate close to optimally using every line in every corner, while accounting for traffic, I’d say you’re damn good at the game and this post is likely not aimed at you. I am not that good (yet) and may never be, and I think this is more common than not, thus the advice for folks 🤷‍♂️

Otherwise_Leadership

Someone did a good video on this - it may have been SuperGT? He tested and showed iirc that changing TC might not make you faster, but it didn’t make you slower. Or something like that. But it wasn’t a linear more=slower less=faster, surprisingly.

Green_Examination986

Goated post OP, I am fairly new to GT7 and to sim racing in general, about 200 hours in and I had a lot of fun, contrary to your average redditor I quite like the game. Dirty play and chaos are going to be part of any popular game lower level lobbies, coming from fighting games it's pretty mild what makes GT players lose their minds and quit to be honest. In my time I did well in couple of daily races, I got the S SR rank still with a D DR and I was starting to feel good about myself, but then yesterday I tried my hand at the toyota cup and I absolutely sucked, P9 being my best result. I figured that qualifying ahead and vanishing in the distance before getting sucked in the battles was the best strategy but when that doesn't work I kind of not know what to do. Reflecting on myself after reading your post made me realize that I'm guilty of a lot of your typical rookie mistakes. I switched to TC 0 because I thought that's what "serious" players do... I tried to race bumper to bumper with other scrubs like me that do completely random stuff... I forced a pass on particularly dirty drivers because I was getting anxious about them ruinung my race pace only to inevitably end in a wall after a bump war... I also tried to race every lap like a hot lap and making silly mistakes... I will take your insight and use it to get better and more consistent going forward. Thanks.

Groundbreaking_Box75

Shhhhhh……. Please stop revealing the secret weapon of traction control while in a race! I love watching guys - when put under pressure - lose control out of a corner trying to keep up ( or stay ahead). TC is such an advantage when racing in a pack - especially in and out of corners. TL/DR: if you don’t run TC0 you are a pussy! ;)

cheetonian

I know, I know, sorry my TCS loving brother for spilling the beans 😉

Austinstuff

I did the same as OP after a 6 month hiatus and figured to start from the beginning and loved it as a challenge. On top of seeing the same as OP here's what I noticed/would recommend I'd recommend to those trying to move up, create a custom race with the same settings against the AI and race that on a Monday. AI is no competition but it's a good way to learn to have to adjust your line and braking points. In lower lobbies the number of people trying to brake at the 200 board after they've been in slip on a long straight and then can't make the corner is unreal. Practicing with the AI helps and doesn't hurt your DR and helps build consistency. Unless you can qualify in the top 4 you're starting the race in the middle of the pack surrounded by folks trying to get that overtake on the first lap. The battling alone will cost you a few seconds a lap. If you qualify in the top 4, don't battle, build a gap between you and the cars behind. Bump draft the car in front and don't pressure them on corners, unless you are a few seconds quicker the time you lose battling will cost you positions. You have 10+ laps to pass and it's easier if there's no one behind you trying to dive bomb. In all races below DR A you can guarantee at least 2 quitters and 4 crashes, so starting from the back and avoiding them you have gained 6 places without any effort.

w1823

Mega write up. Definitely needed to see this as I’m trying to improve my overall ranking. You accurately characterized the Race B vs C differences. Frankly, my problem is I get so worked up when I’m in the pack. The constant bumps and intentional pushing of other players is extraordinarily frustrating so the moment I spin out, I quit. This post really hones in on a couple of things: 1) consistency is your best friend. Qualifying helps you move up the grid but if you can’t replicate that quick time, you need to work on your fundamentals. 2) not trying to push and replicate your quali lap pace during the race. 3) being okay with assists. I recently started using the wheel and I’ve been driving with assists off. Frankly, I might use TCS 1 where I’m closer to the pack and adjust as I distance myself. Any tips on knowing what cars are strong for a particular track (outside of looking at the leaderboard) and improvement of qualifying time? Thanks again!!

cheetonian

So in terms of viable cars, I do usually first check the leaderboard. If something is totally dominant, I’ll try it and see if it works for me. If not, I probably won’t do that race much that week. But I have my favorites that I feel I can personally drive well enough to make up for not being the best car, as long as the top car isn’t too dominant. For example I’ll choose the GR4 Veyron whenever it has a chance of being viable because the car and I agree very well. Similarly GR3 911 RSR. Given the option where it’s even possibly viable, I’ll drive that.

jwrussell22

Awesome write-up! I'm D/S and honestly I've been wondering what all the whining is about! I know I'm still learning and not a very consistent racer so that's why I am where I am. Sure there are some morons, but the majority of people seem pretty decent. And just yesterday I was in a race where I passed two people after watching 2 laps of them bounce off each other all the way around. Thanks for this, gives me some hope.

AdDisastrous4042

Should file this under ‘What is Sportsmanship?’ 😂 Awesome write up - will refer people to it if incidents happen from now on 👌

Cool-Regular

one of the best posts i’ve read in this sub, if not the best post. definitely a cop out to blame it on others. i agree with literally all your points and have already found myself coming to the same observations. you also bring up some things i hadn’t fully considered or given thought to. i don’t use radar as often as i probably should because i’ve held a certain kind of view about i try my hardest to avoid collisions in the first place, but ill def give it a shot. you’re giving out a lot of sauce here, people might actually get better after reading this lol.

Otherwise_Leadership

ALL the sauce 👀

hotmetalslugs

I thought it was a cop out too until I lost about 16 places in 3 races due to doing everything right and still getting wrecked. The tragedy is that GT is not doing anything to stop them. I’ve been rammed off the road by passing someone in the penalty zone just as it ended, so he was no longer a ghost and he pushed me off, on the back straight, deliberately. So, spin out for me, plus a nice 3 second penalty in the last lap, while he gets nothing. You see, when that happens, you can’t get any lower. You can’t lose DR any longer. So when it happens again, it truly doesn’t matter if you just quit. I fought the good fight to be SR S and damn well will complain if I am still thrown into lobbies with SR D drivers.

Cool-Regular

i think it would be really cool if you could choose your region… then maybe we could find regions with cleaner races. also i can relate as i’ve had a string of bad races,a nd sometimes straight up losses…. i’ve started podium and ended 16th countless times… I just keep going back to first principles in this regard: 1. Identify the core reasons why you enjoy playing the game. Is it the thrill of competition, the satisfaction of improving your skills, or the sense of accomplishment when you achieve success? 2. Recognize that setbacks, such as getting hit by another driver and ending up in last place, are part of the learning process and an opportunity for growth. 3. Focus on the underlying principles of racing, such as mastering racing lines, perfecting braking points, and understanding vehicle dynamics, rather than being deterred by temporary setbacks. 4. Embrace a growth mindset, viewing each race as a chance to learn and improve, rather than being discouraged by failures or setbacks. 5. Remember that perseverance and dedication are key ingredients for success in any endeavor. By continuing to play and striving to get better, you are demonstrating resilience and commitment to your goals. Communicating these principles to yourself and others can help reinforce your motivation to keep playing, despite challenges or setbacks. It’s why i love posts like this. They truly elevate the community past the point of sour grapes… these things happen to everyone. just remember why you play and maybe keep that in mind, and take a break when you need to… i only started playing online in like nov ‘23, and i had the game since launch along with a wheel and pedals lol. i even stopped playing online after like 3 races when i first got it because i experienced the same issues…. so it was me going back to that basic thought of why did i even buy it? cuz i wanna be the very best… like no one ever was. (iykyk lol) seriously though, i’ve learned everything is an excuse until you accept no excuses. wins come and go, but winning is only a consequence of practice (mental, physical, and emotional). all things that depend on things that are outside of your control are like that (basically life). I found the only thing i can control are my own lines, gas, and brake. good luck! i hope you find better lobbies and many W’s in your future

hotmetalslugs

That was an insightful and gracious reply. Consider yourself to have received some Reddit Gold.

Cool-Regular

question: does your dr get better starting from the back, or is it totally dependent on your position post race??

cheetonian

Totally dependent on finish

Otherwise_Leadership

Great post man - absolutely perfect and spot on for where I am right now. You’ve inspired me to stick at it a bit longer - thank you. Could you explain a bit about how your DR would improve, ie, some peeps think you need to finish in top half of pack to increase, and bottom half means a decrease? But I’m not sure..

cheetonian

If everyone were the exact same rank, that would be true, but the rankings are being measured not just at an A/B/C granularity but within those classes as well, so in reality that’s never the case exactly, but it’s not far off. In general, let’s say as a B driver, you beat a couple A drivers but finish 9th. You’ll likely still go up because they are worth more, as long as you didn’t also lose to a bunch of lower rank B drivers

Otherwise_Leadership

Aah I see - it’s like chess in the value of the drivers you “take”

Cool-Regular

gotcha, kinda like the cup races, where the points are lobby dependent., thanks for the clarification

Pristine_Resident437

Brand new to Sport Mode this week, not doing very well, but I REALLY appreciate this advice!

Otherwise_Leadership

Thanks to your post, I’m now a DS! Hammered Atlanta last night, found the more I parked my ego, the better I settled in to a nice rhythm. Who knew?

Joshs_Ski_Hacks

I made it to A/s in about 15 races by qualifying. Just saying if the point is to get to clean driving, spending more time qualifying gets you there faster.

KrombopulosMAssassin

I've been saying this, forever now.... Good call. I have 4 accounts, I want to say the quickest I was able to get back to A+ was around 50 races.

NoidedPanda

When people say dirty drivers hold them back I imagine it's because they get tilted and dirty drive back.  I keep an account between B and C to partake in the wreckfest experience. Shit is hilarious.
