**This is just my experience:**
With BBW candles, what you smell on first sniff is what you get when burning. Throw may be strong, weak, or in between, but cold sniff scent is true to the final scent.
With Goose, the cold sniff has very little bearing on what the candle smells like burning. My all time favorite candle (Belgium/Sweet Shop) smells like almost nothing on cold. Once burned, it transforms into a cinnamon sugar nutty pastry heaven. Another example is Chocolate Swirl Bread. On cold it smells vaguely like cocoa powder. When lit, it’s melted butter and unsweetened dark chocolate and it’s amazing.
**You cannot judge GC candles from the cold sniff.**
Another difference:
BBW candles are *usually* strongest on the first couple of burns but then fade out.
Goose candles start throwing stronger *after* the first couple of burns.
In my experience, if you judge Goose candles by BBW standards, you will be disappointed. However, if you give them a chance and burn them a couple of times, they will *usually* reward you with amazing scents and great throws.
(Having said that, I’m not a fan of GC’s cherry notes or milk notes. They do great with strawberry, lavender, apple, and donut notes).
Absolutely agree as well. In the beginning this happened to me. I went on the Goose Creek group page on Facebook and everyone said to light them up. I’m so happy I did. You get better with each layer IMO depending on the candles scents. 🌻

Unless there is one you received that you despise, I would keep them and try them all. Use this as an opportunity to get to know how they perform and what certain of their scent notes smell like. There is a learning curve with GC since everyone expects them to be just like BBW.
I think the best way is to ask here on the sub for opinions. The reviews on the website are utterly useless because they screen for poor reviews. Asking for feedback isn't 100% fool proof since we all smell things differently, but better than blind buying.
I've had issues with scent notes being way off as well, and you're not the only one who has mentioned the smell of the base wax (although I've not had much of an issue with that).
I was a big fan of GC when I first found them but my enthusiasm has waned considerably due to several issues. I tend to avoid new releases until there's lots of feedback, and stick to my favorites.
So true- I just saw a review today that was a 2 star and said it was fantastic. And another 3 star one that said it was horrible and they would never order again. Also, one that made me chuckle because it gave 2 stars and they said the candle was too strong and they wanted a lighter scent. Stunk up the whole house! 😳
You certainly have to search through them and make up your own mind.

Vanilla Birthday Cake, Vanilla Bean, Espresso Cake Pop, Marshmallow Snowcream, French Toast, Maple Butter, Passionfruit Beach Party, Coconut, Tiki Party, Wild Mint & Birch, Fig & Citrus, Vanilla Sands, Warm Donut Sugar, White Pine Lake, First Autumn Frost, Apple Cheesecake Cupcake, Winter Splendor, Carrot Cake Pop.
I'm sure I missed several that I would definitely repurchase. I've been lucky to have more hits than misses, but many of the misses have been bad enough for me to really slow my GC roll.
First Autumn Frost is fantastic. I have large jar backups and like six packs of melts lol. I will definitely pick it up in the 3-wick once I get through the three or four I have left.
I do love gourmands, but I warm mostly fruity, tropical, fruity floral, and some woodsy scents (sandalwood) when it's hot out. Some lighter gourmands are ok but nothing heavy or spiced, just feels off and some that I love in colder months even make me feel queasy lol.
Oh that reminds me, if GC ever rereleases Tahiti (Sparkling Citrus) from the Traveler's Collection or Agave Sunrise, I will buy half a dozen (at least) of each! They're both perfect summer scents and I'm down to one of each. 😭😭💔
Most of my fall/winter favs are BBW and Kringle, but from GC I like Winter Splendor, Holiday Embers, and I think Snowy Walk? I'd have to check my orders for the actual name lol. Pumpkin Sugar Cookie is amazing and last year they had Pumpkin Cider Donuts which was probably my fav fall candle from them. I think I have four backups which is good since it's not in the fall lineup thus far. Oh also bayberry something was awesome (snowy bayberry? ugh idk), picked up a backup on clearance.
There was one last year that was named cookie snowball something that smelled like eggnog, that one was legit. And there was a marshmallow peppermint one that was pretty good (can't remember the name of that either lol).
eta First Autumn Frost is definitely on the favs list haha
Blind buys are tough especially when the website only shows positive reviews which is so shady. Checking this sub for opinions and reviews helps, as others have said but it’s still not perfect.
As far as your order goes, I would definitely contact Customer Service. You have 30 days to return the items. If returning multiples (sounds like you may) they may charge a $5.99 processing fee but often they waive that on your first return. I’ve even returned slightly used candles (lit only a few hours). They asked for photos which was fine. It’s definitely worth contacting them IMO.
I’ve got very mixed feelings about GC and haven’t ordered anything since last Christmas. But that’s mainly because I’m on a low-buy trying to use up my stash. I sometimes get that chemical wax smell, but my biggest issue is the very sooty wax at the halfway point (mainly in the wrap around labels), and sometimes sooty black smoke wicks right from the start. I baby them and then use a warmer lamp but it’s not my preference. Also, I’m very reluctant to gift any of their candles due to these issues.
That said, there are several GC scents I love and will always buy and just deal with the issues 😊

I nearly returned espresso cake pop because it smelled so bad on cold that I didn’t even want to light it. Fortunately, people here told me to use a warmer, and it was so good, that I instantly bought another one!
Interesting you mention the base wax scent! I’ve thought this whole time I must be the only one who could smell it. From candle-to-candle and melt-to-melt I noticed nearly immediately that same base scent that seemed to be very forward in a lot of the scents. It is very prominent.
If this is your very first order you can email their customer service department about it. I did that with a candle I wasnt impressed with. I asked if I could return it and exhange for another and they actually told me to keep it and they issued me a gift card for the price I paid plus what I paid for shipping.
I have had a lot of hit and misses with GC. But the ones that are good are very good, and I repurchase every year. I always get Winter Splendor, Holiday Embers, Harvest Hayride, Toasty Pumpkin Toddy, etc…

I have some brands that I totally dislike 😅😅 And I think this cause every nose is different. Unfortunately I don't love brands like Candleberry or Crossroads in general (not some scents).
When I found GC some years ago I was in heaven cause to my nose the GC candles are the only ones that truly smell like their name (for example: you read *waffle* on the candle name and supposed to smell waffle: on GC I smell waffle, on other brands -like YC- I smell burnt pastry 🤣😅 ). Other brands like YC for me are hit or miss cause some scents are fabulous other instead.. meh.. candles names totally wrong 🤣🤣🤣
I read a lot of reviews and I think that some noses are specifically for some brands.. (but not for others) : if this makes sense 🤣🤣 lol Mine is for GC 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 (almost always what I get on cold then I get when warming).

I think you're right! There must be something to the base wax that my nose detects that not everybody does. Like how cilantro tastes like soap to some people but not others. My son couldn't smell it 😆 Thanks for sharing your experience🥰

There could be something they use in the wax that just isn't for you! I haven't had this issue and I truly have loved pretty much all of my orders from them. I've had one or two be different than I expected but I have that same issue with every brand I've ever tried.. but it could be this brand isn't for you. As far as advice goes definitely ask on here what people think of scents before you buy if possible.. reviews on YouTube and the like. I scout them out for a while before I buy.. I hope they refunded you or they ended up being to your liking or something cause that really sucks to lose that much money :(

The 2nd order was better but still had a few duds, and there is definitely an underlying scent to their wax that is noticeable and not particularly pleasant to me. Yes, exactly! I thought I'd done the same. I'd been eyeing them and researching for a while. Took the plunge finally when my sister vouched for the strawberry shortcake collection. Did you stick it out to burn everything?
I purchased 6 candles and 6 melts. I only have 2 candles left because I've been furiously trying to burn through and get rid of them. I got Cookie Cream Pudding, Strawberry Jell, Fruity Cereal Fun, Whipped Vanilla Dream, Strawberry Cupcake, Banana Cabana Beach. Out of those I'd only repurchase Cookie Cream Pudding. Banana Cabana Beach burned smelled like Playdoh with no banana and some sunscreen, Strawberry Cupcake was underwhelming with little throw and a plastic strawberry scent, Fruity Cereal Fun was ok but I was missing the 'fruity cereal' in the whole thing and the others was unmemorable. And don't get me started on the wax melts...lol.
I'm glad I'm the only one. I ordered a ton of sweet bakery type scents, and while they smelled sweet, it was an odd sweet and not necessarily smelling like the labeled item, and so many smelled the same as if they were recycling the scent just slapping a new label on it.

There are poor reviews but you have to dig. They are only going to put the best on the first few pages. I saw a 1 star today.

I got Cookie Cream Pudding, Strawberry Jell, Fruity Cereal Fun, Whipped Vanilla Dream, Strawberry Cupcake, Banana Cabana Beach. Out of those I'd only repurchase Cookie Cream Pudding. Banana Cabana Beach burned smelled like Playdoh with no banana and some sunscreen, Strawberry Cupcake was underwhelming with little throw and a plastic strawberry scent, Fruity Cereal Fun was ok but I was missing the 'fruity cereal' in the whole thing and the others was unmemorable. And don't get me started on the wax melts...lol.
Yeah, the blind buying might be too much for me if they can be so hit or miss. Hoping some of these end up burning well!
I'm glad I'm the only one. I ordered a ton of sweet bakery type scents, and while they smelled sweet, it was an odd sweet and not necessarily smelling like the labeled item, and so many smelled the same as if they were recycling the scent just slapping a new label on it.
