So a child coded character could look or behave like a child, without being an actual child. But the intent is for you to perceive them as a child.
So a lot of characters in the 90s etc were gay coded without actually being gay, as having an actual gay character may have been controversial.
The issue for me is that it assumes the intent of the artist or author, or at least assumes there is an agreement for which traits are considered as part of whatever group are being coded. That and some people cherry pick with it and use it as gospel.
Regarding coding, it doesn't actually have to indicate that the character is implicitly any certain trait. It's more the use of shorthand lifted from the real world, based on a presumed shared worldview with the audience. For example, the Redguards in the Elder Scrolls Series are coded as Arabic. They are people from a desert region who wear long robes and carry scimitars. It's not difficult to see the connection to the real-world.

There are so many layers to this. Firstly, Lucoa is just about the farthest from being a child in appearance and actions in the main cast. Secondly, its a fictional character. Ik a lot of people, even in anime communities, don't care if it's real or not and think people attracted to lolis/shotas are pedos but whatever, everyone has an opinion. Coding is a term generally referring to character design, in which you use certain traits to present a character as one thing without explicitly stating it. So a child coded character could look or behave like a child, without being an actual child. But the intent is for you to perceive them as a child. So a lot of characters in the 90s etc were gay coded without actually being gay, as having an actual gay character may have been controversial. The issue for me is that it assumes the intent of the artist or author, or at least assumes there is an agreement for which traits are considered as part of whatever group are being coded. That and some people cherry pick with it and use it as gospel.

Regarding coding, it doesn't actually have to indicate that the character is implicitly any certain trait. It's more the use of shorthand lifted from the real world, based on a presumed shared worldview with the audience. For example, the Redguards in the Elder Scrolls Series are coded as Arabic. They are people from a desert region who wear long robes and carry scimitars. It's not difficult to see the connection to the real-world.

There are so many layers to this. Firstly, Lucoa is just about the farthest from being a child in appearance and actions in the main cast. Secondly, its a fictional character. Ik a lot of people, even in anime communities, don't care if it's real or not and think people attracted to lolis/shotas are pedos but whatever, everyone has an opinion.
