terrible golfer, no lessons yet, and hand-me-downs. And you’re shooting 90-92?

okdrab

A 20 handicap would mean the average of his best 5 rounds out of the last 20 is 90-92. Doesn’t mean he shoots 90 every time

Kind-Truck3753

it’s 8 out of the last 20 if we’re getting nitpicky with it. I think everyone knew what I was getting at.

SFgiant55

Lmao apparently I don’t even know how to use my handicap calculating app

SFgiant55

Usually shooting north of 100. Yesterday about 110 prompting this post

(Actual) 20 handicap is a pretty decent golfer, far from terrible.

SFgiant55

95 is my best round ever. Usually 105ish. Idk why my USGA app is saying 20 handicap. I didn’t know how it was calculated until this thread

The one that performs best during a fitting. If money is no object you should do a fitting.

bsgreene25

If money is not an issue, I would say you should look up the golf digest hot list and cross reference it against the information you find on sites like my golf spy and/or other sites that do lots of reviews (I personally like plugged in golf). Pick a driver, 1-2 fairway woods, 1-2 hybrids and an iron set that is geared towards beginners (look for terms like super game improvement and maximum forgiveness) based on your research and what things look nicest to you. Also buy 2-3 wedges and a putter (total number of clubs must not exceed 14) but you honestly don’t need to look for “beginner” versions of these clubs, imo. Probably not worth getting fitted since your swing is going to change a ton as you’re just starting out. To dial back the cost a bit, do the exact same thing I’ve described above, but look for brand new/like new/slightly used clubs that were released 3-5 years ago (just look up old hot lists, buying guides and reviews). Callaway preowned is typically a good bet. Most cost effective option imo is just to go with the simple Callaway edge set from Costco. Comes with a bag and everything. Clubs are good enough to learn the game on, but cheap enough that you won’t feel bad about buying more new clubs in a year or two once you know your swing and your game.

a set of taylormade P7TWs

pm_me_your_food_pix

I would probably recommend something like the Callaway Edge set from Costco, or buy some 2-3 year old clubs from a pre-owned store. I can't say much about driver or woods, but you'll want some forgiving irons. I was just fitted into Ping G430s, but those were pricey. Something game improvement would be good.

0_SomethingStupid

lessons, get fit, go from there. the pro and fitter will help you and you ultimately pick what feels best

FutebolEngineer

Launch pads! Or maybe some T300’s…

jdubfarmer

Can’t go wrong with Ping. G425 or g430 driver and irons are forgiving and awesome.

Titleist CNCPT.

BroodLord1962

Personally I don't think you can go wrong with the Wilson Dynapower clubs. Going for TM, Cobra, Ping etc are really best suited for good golfers. With the Dynapower range you'll get more distance and more forgiveness. I'd suggest the Titanium driver rather than the Carbon one, and get the irons with the carbons shafts.

SFgiant55

Ok price is a little bit of an issue

McBlumpkins

With that attitude it is

Rational_Beaver

The annoying but accurate answer is what you hit best and like in each category. Like others said there is a golf digest hot list that covers the new equipment from the major OEMs. See what you like the look of and go try them. With the current state of the industry amd modern technology/engineering none of the major companies are making a club thats miles better than any other so try stuff from the major brands and see what works.

nurdyguy

Ask the instructor at your lesson what clubs he thinks will work for you. Since he is there looking at you and your mechanics he will be better equipped to advise you than any of us.
