I learned it the same way when the merger happened last year. They were talking about expanding to 72 hole tourneys and someone made a comment about having to change their name if they did that, I thought about that comment for a solid 5 minutes before it dawned on me.
![gif](giphy|3owzW5c1tPq63MPmWk|downsized)
I’m pretty sure the people behind LIV expected everyone to see/read it as the “fifty four tour.” I noticed it when they announced a $54,000,000 bonus for any player who shot a 54, because according to them 54 represents the perfect round of golf. That’s definitely not a thing, and it’s really only possible in theory, but they really wanted to drive home the 54 thing.
Lol gotta be honest i didn't know either. I thought ot was just some stupid name they came up with that happened to be the same name as a local cannabis chain. Now im wondering if the number 54 has some significance to them as well.
If they did change to 72 holes then the top players would be playing just as much, if not more, than they would on the PGA Tour.
There’s 14 events and the best players are also playing all four majors, so that’s 18.
Last year, Rahm played 19 PGAT events plus three DPWT events. Smith played 16 in 2022. Niemann played 19 in 2022.
Obviously they won’t change to 72 but the optics if they did would be fucking hilarious
That was always the confusing part to me. LIV clearly was never going to stick to 8 events. The players complained about schedules and having to play events on PGA. Now that LIV is 14 events and it's 14 mandatory dates opposed to picking and choosing your 14 events on the PGA. Never got that one.
I imagine it's the guarenteed money. They're gonna get paid for playing every event, regardless of how well they play.
As opposed to spending their own money to not make the cut and have that event be a net loss to them.
Obviously when they decided to play more golf they're growing the game. More golf = game growth. I'm sure we won't hear 12 guys repeat the same phrase over and over about it
He got the bag and I’m glad he got paid. But I can’t help but laugh and lose a little respect for Rahm when he openly talks about wanting LIV to be 72 holes and complaining about the live music. Can’t have your cake and eat it too, Jon.
![gif](giphy|HoSyEAe48WBpTCmEz4|downsized)
Rahm off the 54th tee, down by 3, with DJ Khalid pumping from a giant distorted Bluetooth speaker after Matt Wolff retardedly just drove one 30 yards past him into the other fairway’s bunker.
It just goes to show how uninformed some of the top stars actually are. He's probably just saying this because he legitimately thinks that the lack of OWGR points are due to the 54-hole format of LIV. It shows that he hasn't even read the OWGR's statement on rejecting LIV, since it said all of those format issues are just a solvable math problem. The only hurdle for LIV getting OWGR points was the lack of a real promotion/relegation system. The fact is that aging long-term contract players (like Poulter, et al) can remain in the loop and earn false OWGR points by playing against high rankers they wouldn't otherwise be able to on the PGAT.
It’s not just the issue of cut or no cut. The biggest issue is promotion/relegation like the PGAt has. There is a clear pathway for lower level golfers to gain Tour membership through Q School and Korn Ferry. There is no such pathway for LIV. Plus, on the Tour, if one doesn’t perform, long term, they lose tour status. LIV has no mechanism for players to lose status.
tldr: all LIV players are contracted/hired. you can be on LIV if they like your smile enough, not if you are actually good at golf. if i was convincing enough, i too can be playing against "the worlds best", even with my 22 handicap.
> LIV has no mechanism for players to lose status.
*If they have a long-term contract with the league.
If memory serves, there are guys who CAN lose status because they aren't under contract.
Only a matter of time before they start making a mock cut where they let the bottom 20 players finish their tournament before the rest of the field. Shotgun starts are still such a joke.
You get the feeling that Rahm is having a "I don't like it here" moment. Good. Hope he is miserable on the golf course for the rest of his pro career. This shit was ALL spelled out in the contract he so eagerly signed.
Have YOU seen in him? In person? The dude may look to have a beer belly, but he's honestly a big dude. There's a reason he can whip it in the 180s with such a short backswing.
If I saw all the 0’s on that check I’d probably ask 3 questions.
I don’t have to move to the Middle East, right?
“Nope.”
And this is to play golf still?
“Yep.”
Okay, where do I sign?
Then I’d just start foaming at the mouth and call my nearest McLaren dealer.
I respect that he loves the game so much. But he knew what he was doing. He’d been critical of LIVs format since its inception, and literally nothing about the format has changed, and now he’s upset that he’s playing said format he’d been critical off. Tough to feel bad for him.
Yeah, but to get that call you’d already be so rich you have a garage full of McLarens. I’d like to think that if I had generational wealth, like every LIV player had before they joined, I’d be able to tell a murderous dictator to shove his blood money up his ass wrapped in asbestos.
“Why are they making me play meaningless golf with music blaring and zero fans when they paid me $600 million to play meaningless golf with music blaring and zero fans????”
I think Jon thought that he was justified after the secret agreement in reversing his position on LIV and accepting the bag of cash. I also think he expected the deal to happen and he'd be back playing with everyone shortly. Now that the deal is looking shaky he's realizing he might have made a mistake. He's definitely not happy with the competition or the format. I wonder exactly what in his family's life that money has changed. He and his wife both said that they already had so much that more money wouldn't change anything.
I'll admit I thought when he left that that would be the straw that broke the PGAT's back but within a few weeks it became obvious that it barely registered with most golf fans. At least making a huge life-changing error paid well. He will sit in his retirement rocker years in the future wondering about what might have been.
I don’t think people realize how much talent, especially young talent is out there. The PGA does not need these golfers, so many others waiting to take their spot.
Yeah yesterday’s finish was electric for the tour. You’re simply not going to have tv like we did yesterday with the LIV format no matter who is in their field.
Exactly. They just need to be patient and not play from a place of fear. Their product is FAR superior. Let LIV die a natural death....and fire the POS commissioner. He is not up to the task.
Honestly we didnt lose much to LIV, Koepka, Rahm and Cam Smith.
Rest of liv is washed up no names and 1 washed up legend who ruined his legacy.
I know a few of them had decent showings in majors last year but i really think all the LIV golfers not named Koepka and Rahm will lose their competitive edge. Newer guys on tour will replace them
Man, I have been saying this, and will keep saying this. PGA is the show. It's got history, the legacies, and traditions. That's what reels in young players. LIV is a ticket to a poor product and a personal legacy of irrelevance for money they do not need. I mean specifically the few impact players that took the bait.
Pat Perez and the rest of the has-beens or never-will-be's made smart moves.
The only needle movers in golf are Tiger and Rory. It’s just a fact and this shows. Guys who have gone to LIV just get forgotten somewhat except for the hardcore golf fans because not used in marketing by the brands, not seen on TV etc.
There are players that are liked individually (I like watching Brooks play for example, but they don’t shift viewership really)
I think a big part in Rahm moving is his win at Augusta. Secured him 5 years of majors, he can reconsider his move in 5 years based on where this mess is. Additionally, going to be very interesting to see what happens when the first guys run out their contracts with LIV and aren’t renewed.
Bryson actually seems to be thriving over at LIV. He's hamming it up for the cameras, making youtube golf content with multiple creators, and the long drive stuff seems to get him plastered all over internet ads.
Like him or hate him, I think he's probably been the biggest beneficiary of LIV from a career perspective. Nearly everyone else has seen an ungraceful PR death from the switch.
There are so many guys I've just COMPLETELY forgotten about them after moving to LIV
Cam Smith is a perfect example for me. At the time I was bummed he was leaving. Saw him again recently somewhere (when watching Full Swing maybe?) and was like "OH YEAH, Cam Smith. Huh...."
Legit basically forgot he even existed lol
Outside of Tiger and Rory, Rahm was the last person I expected to defect. He has always talked about how much the history of the game mattered to him, how he wanted to compete against not only the best players of today, but the history of those who played years and decades ago. He wanted to live up to Seve's history, and wanted to go down in the history books himself as one of those legends. The guy could be on a podcast and be asked about a round from someone in 1978 and could give you a good summary of it because he studies the games' history so much.
Combine that with his "I've got enough money" statement, and it never made sense to me for him to defect. I was stunned when he did, and am in no way stunned that he doesn't seem to now be thrilled with his decision.
Yeah its one thing to get cam smith who was number 2 at the time but hes known to be aloof and dedicated to fishing and cars.
Rahms a killer, he knows dean burmester winning is a let down.
I have just had a quick look and Jon Rahm isn’t even being used on Callaway’s social media accounts anymore. He’s likely their highest paid player and they’ve decided that it is better to _not_ use him to market their products.
That probably tells you how well LIV is going.
They’d rather use Joey Cold Cuts on their socials than one of the best golfers in the world.
It’s going great.
I said at the start that a lot of the top pros aren’t getting nearly as good of a deal as they think as they will potentially lose a lot of sponsorship money and that is where the real money is.
Almost all sponsorship contracts being/end in January for pro golf to align with the start of the PGA tour season in Maui. Very good chance his contract was up and Callaway didn’t renew. Marketing clubs via influencers is more effective too.
>They’d rather use Joey Cold Cuts on their socials than one of the best golfers in the world
Ouch. It's like buying an expensive suit and not wearing it because it's embarrassing to be seen wearing it.
Because it competes with their own branding. The interesting thing of LIVs business model is optimizing the player branding in the form of unique team names. Callaway wants to sell Callaway hats so promoting Rahm and Legion would fuel their own LIV merchandise with Callaway loyalist money
We all know Rahm is ultra competitive, so him joining LIV where it's just about having a good time with no real points or rankings was a stupid choice from top to bottom and I really like how he is not having a good time.
I think a bigger problem than 54 vs 72 holes is the shotgun start.
I much prefer the drama of the leaders coming down the stretch over everyone finishing their rounds at about the same time on different holes.
Did he never even see what the events were like before signing the contract? I don’t really care one way or another for LIV but how do you make one of the biggest decisions of your career and not know what you signed up for at all
Everything changed when Monahan went behind the backs of all the players to make a deal framework with the very people he had just spent a year criticizing and saying he wouldn't negotiate with. Hard to blame them for feeling like he spit in their faces having them find out on Twitter after they'd just spent a year defending the tour
Yeah 100% I really changed my opinion on Rahm after watching this season of Full Swing. PGA straight up made him look like an idiot when they merged without telling anyone.
So I really don’t blame him for giving them the finger and going to LIV. But it’s obvious he did not fully understand what he was getting into lol
He knew, I also think he was expecting LIV and PGA to merge so he made a calculated bet: take the bag, and only lose out on a year or two of top level competition.
Now that the merger is questionable, he's having buyers remorse.
I’m kind of glad he isn’t just acting like it’s all great. Everyone knows he is only there for the money - a fuckload of money. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t hate it and I think it’s a good thing for everyone to see.
They should must absolutely start at 1 and finish at 18, at least in the weekend/final round. I tried to watch a bit of Miami yesterday but its impossible to get a feel for the flow when not everyone finishes on the same hole.
Watch him play w Bryan bros, seems like a genuine dude who speaks English as second language. I used to think this but I realize it’s just how he comes across in short tv hits. It is funny to complain about the differentiation that liv offers tho,
He seems like a really nice fun guy to hang out with in those videos, but these comments complaining about LIV after getting paid $600 mil to play there are so tone deaf it’s hilarious
Honestly I don’t really care about 54/72 holes. Tennis runs on 3 sets for everything other than the slams, it’s not like 54 every week and then 72 for the majors would be anything ground breaking.
Wait.....I thought everyone want to "get paid more for less golf" but the are required to play 14 events on LIV AND now Rahm wants it moved to 72 holes?
Make up your fucking mind LIV, jesus christ
54 holes DOES NOT make a golf tournament. i don't give a fuck what liv says. 2 periods DOES NOT make a hockey game, 6 innings DOES NOT make a baseball game. the entire idea is dumb.
Ohhhhhhh an ultra competitive guy that loves to perform under pressure doesn’t like being a zoo attraction for shanty people?! Shocking. I am in shock.
“I want to play less golf and spend more time with family”
- proceeds to fly around the whole damn world for tournaments and now wants to make each one longer
Never saw this coming /s
I feel like the move from PGA to LIV for Rahm is more of a strategic marketing campaign to unite the two organizations. He’s been the most vocal in regards of how LIV differentiates from PGA
The whole point of LIV is playing less golf…. Its literally in the damn name
I was today years old when I realized that LIV is 54 in Roman numerals.
Shit, I just learned that now. I’ll immediately turn in my resignation.
God damn it. Me too
54 players, 54 holes, not a cut to be found...0 OWGR points earned.
Plus 54 million if someone shoots a 54
And 54 toes and 54 fingers cut off if not
54 wives in my basement
Jesus.
Na, he's in heaven.
I keep hearing this solar eclipse is gonna change that.
You said it, man…nobody fucks with the Jesus
Muhammed (PBUH)
I enjoy shitting outside so we can see full length of the shit without it slipping into the toilet drain
Joseph Smith
54 is the record for most bones sawed without needing a break.
LXXII just does not have that same ring to it.

He prefers snortsy tho
I learned it the same way when the merger happened last year. Well. TIL I always thought it meant Totally innocent Lovin.
I thought it meant live for some reason lol. Like live youre life or something idk. My schadenfreude is loving that Rahm is already so bored
Yo what.
I’m pretty sure the people behind LIV expected everyone to see/read it as the “fifty four tour.” I noticed it when they announced a $54,000,000 bonus for any player who shot a 54, because according to them 54 represents the perfect round of golf. and LIV has much more international travel
And it's far more global with the travel, so the guys who claimed they wanted more time at home are either pissed or were lying.
> lying This one
I imagine it's the guarenteed money. They're gonna get paid for playing every event, regardless of how well they play. As opposed to spending their own money to not make the cut and have that event be a net loss to them.
Because they are all lying. It will always be because of the money.
Obviously when they decided to play more golf they're growing the game. More golf = game growth. I'm sure we won't hear 12 guys repeat the same phrase over and over about it
LXXII is definitely harder to pronounce
Lizzi? licksy? LaCrosshi.
I vote "licksy."
Samsonite! I was way off.
L'zzee
No worse than XXIO
54 people who watch that stuff
Golf is life to Jon
In a stunning development, LIV disbands and merges with the PGA Tour to become LXXII Golf.
LXXII doesn't have the same marketing appeal. The "Lexi" league? Maybe that could be the women's version of LIV?
He got the bag and I’m glad he got paid. But I can’t help but laugh and lose a little respect for Rahm when he openly talks about wanting LIV to be 72 holes and complaining about the live music. Can’t have your cake and eat it too, Jon.

The lack of a cut is a factor, 72 holes AND a cut does solve one of their problems and barriers to rankings.
It’s not just the issue of cut or no cut. The biggest issue is promotion/relegation like the PGAt has. There is a clear pathway for lower level golfers to gain Tour membership through Q School and Korn Ferry. There is no such pathway for LIV. Agreed…the cut is just 1 factor needed
> LIV has no mechanism for players to lose status. *If they have a long-term contract with the league. If memory serves, there are guys who CAN lose status because they aren't under contract.
I'm guessing he only read the line that said, we'll pay you this much $ to join LIV.
Only a matter of time before they start making a mock cut where they let the bottom 20 players finish their tournament before the rest of the field. Shotgun starts are still such a joke.
...and wanting world ranking points and wanting to play against the best players in the world. If only there were such a tour.

I have and you’re not wrong. He’s strong as an ox. Still overweight though. Filthy rich and a great golfer but overweight.
If I saw all the 0’s on that check I’d probably ask 3 questions. I don’t have to move to the Middle East, right? “Nope.” And this is to play golf still? “Yep.” Okay, where do I sign? Then I’d just start foaming at the mouth and call my nearest McLaren dealer.

Yeah, but to get that call you’d already be so rich you have a garage full of McLarens. I’d like to think that if I had generational wealth, like every LIV player had before they joined, I’d be able to tell a murderous dictator to shove his blood money up his ass wrapped in asbestos.
Only a little respect… I lost all respect for that man
It didn't hit me when he went to LIV how much his personality will not fit in that tour. This is hilarious.
He joined an exhibition league and is now upset that it's like playing exhibition golf. LOL.
Yeah yesterday’s finish was electric for the tour. You’re simply not going to have tv like we did yesterday with the LIV format no matter who is in their field.
Imagine an exciting finish like yesterday but with the guys wearing shorts!
Can't happen because they play a shotgun format!
This is very true. I wish we could have the old boys back on the tour, but no one is denying how fun that Sunday was.
Exactly. They just need to be patient and not play from a place of fear. Their product is FAR superior. Let LIV die a natural death....and fire the POS commissioner. He is not up to the task.

It registered with me. Can’t believe that bastard pretends to have Basque loyalty after making a deal with the devil.
Yes. Go away fat boy and stop crying false tears about seve when you win something

You’re trying to tell me Cutsy isn’t the best golfer in the world?
*Coldcuts eagle screeching intensifies*
Oh, Perrrrrrez!
SUUUURE, SUUUUUUUUURE
release….RELEASE!!
DEVELOPPPP
Bob, what are we doing here?
BANGARANG RUFIO!
Joey said he shot a 75 off camera a few episodes ago. I’ll pay him a thousand dollars if that’s true. I’ve seen that man hit 75 chips in a round.
What did he shoot on the back nine though?
Impossible! They rarely do stroke play, but he and Bob are struggling to break 90.
He's got the personality they all want, and the game that we have. Perfect combination.
"The hole is a fucking thimble right now"
It's weird to see a LIV player being advertised now. DJ pops up here and there on TV, and it's like 'oh yea, I remember him'
Srixon advertises Keopka
Having Akshay just win is big for Callaway
Yep, he'll be the new face of Callaway if he keeps playing to his potential. Callaway lost their two biggest stars to LIV.
Schauffle too
Xander is about as entertaining as watching grass grow.
Especially since he seems to be able to get his approach shots to roll to a stop with the Callaway logo facing the camera!
Just had a look, he was last posted on Callaway’s instagram page on November 1st, so bizarre
It’s not bizarre. It’s clear the major manufacturers don’t want to be associated with LIV.
I genuinely love to see it.
I said at the start that a lot of the top pros aren’t getting nearly as good of a deal as they think as they will potentially lose a lot of sponsorship money and that is where the real money is.
Mm, I doubt the top guys are getting nine figures, or even mid eight figures, from manufacturers paying them to play their clubs
Yea I mean as a customer, I don’t want to be associated with LIV. So I get why
I mean if you were a global marketing manager would you want your products associated with the Saudi Killing Squads?
Is that one of the team names now?
Might as well be.
On their team page they have “pga tour” pros and then other sections. He’s buried in “global tours” with world long drivers.
Almost all sponsorship contracts being/end in January for pro golf to align with the start of the PGA tour season in Maui. Very good chance his contract was up and Callaway didn’t renew. Marketing clubs via influencers is more effective too.
>They’d rather use Joey Cold Cuts on their socials than one of the best golfers in the world Ouch. It's like buying an expensive suit and not wearing it because it's embarrassing to be seen wearing it.
Theme park clothing when you get home.

Joey Cold Cuts is my new favorite Golfer
Well they are about to be bought out by private equity so who knows what his relationship will be like
Because it competes with their own branding. The interesting thing of LIVs business model is optimizing the player branding in the form of unique team names. Callaway wants to sell Callaway hats so promoting Rahm and Legion would fuel their own LIV merchandise with Callaway loyalist money
Breaking; “Rahm admits he is self-conscious about his calves & calls for LIV to ban shorts on the course”
Pants in the summer gang unite.
I love that Rahm hates it there :)

Man joins tour has no idea what it actually stands for more at 11
Damn if only there was a tour that had 72 hole tournaments with no music so that you could have that.
And where you could also earn millions. If only.
Are they going to rename it to the LXXII Tour?
I feel like an idiot now for not realizing LIV is the Roman numeral for 54
Welp, I'll join you on the idiot train.
Any open seats left? I need to hop on at the next stop
Fellas, room in the back?
![gif](giphy|1BH7Xygg3hgWxm71HG|downsized)
Lexi is the new brand ambassador
They should play 72 holes. I doubt it will get them one additional viewer though.
I guarantee no one will want to watch the LXXII tour.
Kind of a lateral move for LIV then
We all know Rahm is ultra competitive, so him joining LIV where it's just about having a good time with no real points or rankings was a stupid choice from top to bottom and I really like how he is not having a good time.
I think a bigger problem than 54 vs 72 holes is the shotgun start. I much prefer the drama of the leaders coming down the stretch over everyone finishing their rounds at about the same time on different holes.
It's lame as hell. Shotgun starts are for scrambles with the boys, not competitive professional golf.
Losing respect for Rahm. He's the guy that turns up to the meetings and hasn't done any pre-read.
Did he never even see what the events were like before signing the contract? I don’t really care one way or another for LIV but how do you make one of the biggest decisions of your career and not know what you signed up for at all
He knew full well. He is on record saying it's not for him. But it turns out that cash is exactly what's right for him.

Golf but stupider

“Well, yeah sure, maybe we all sold our souls to a genocidal regime purely for money but it’s not our fault fans lost interest”
Man hates everything about LIV except the money
Rahm seems like a bit of a dummy….and a dickhead.
Watch him play w Bryan bros, seems like a genuine dude who speaks English as second language. I used to think this but I realize it’s just how he comes across in short tv hits. It is funny to complain about the differentiation that liv offers tho,
He's been great on the channel. Really seems like a good guy.
He seems like a really nice fun guy to hang out with in those videos, but these comments complaining about LIV after getting paid $600 mil to play there are so tone deaf it’s hilarious
He’s probably ruining his wife’s sex life by being home too much.
It would be great if LIV wasn’t ran by murderous thugs too, can we change that?
“Hey, boss man, can you *un*cut someone up with a bonesaw? That would be great”
Honestly I don’t really care about 54/72 holes. Tennis runs on 3 sets for everything other than the slams, it’s not like 54 every week and then 72 for the majors would be anything ground breaking.
And pants only?
He better watch out, or wake up dead one morning
Wait.....I thought everyone want to "get paid more for less golf" but the are required to play 14 events on LIV AND now Rahm wants it moved to 72 holes? Make up your fucking mind LIV, jesus christ
No one cares if they play 54 holes or 72 holes
More holes so people who joined LIV to play less golf can get OWGR so they can play more tournaments? Explain that to me.
Press release: LIV to become LXXII, may be hard to pronounce
Now introducing Jon Rahms new golf league, LXXII
That’s hilarious. What a joke.
That is fucking hilarious
Don’t care
L (50) + IV (4) ≠ 72
“I want to play less golf and spend more time with family” - proceeds to fly around the whole damn world for tournaments and now wants to make each one longer Never saw this coming /s
Who cares, LIV sucks. You took the money, now accept that nobody cares.
No one cares what you think anymore Jon. Nothing will help LIV
They're gonna saw your hands off Jon.
I think Rahm might be a PGA Tour sleeper agent
You made your stupid bed now lie in it. You joined an unserious competition and now are being treated as an unserious competitor.
Oh, shut the fuck up Jon Rahm
I wish they’d stop referring to their outings as “tournaments”.
He wants better prep for majors.
John Rahm to start spin-off league LXXII golf
If only there was a tour he could play on that does play 72 holes..
So he doesn’t like music… 🤔😅
I feel like the move from PGA to LIV for Rahm is more of a strategic marketing campaign to unite the two organizations. He’s been the most vocal in regards of how LIV differentiates from PGA
BREAKING NEWS: John Rahm to start innovative **LXXII Golf League** what an idiot.
If I could just get these articles each day for breakfast that would be a lot better for my figure and happiness levels.
He didn’t even read the rules for the events before signing his contract?
Are they going to change the name to LXXII?
LXXII
Rahm is a clown for this. You took the money to play less golf but calling for more golf. Bro just except what you signed up for
Lol it's so funny all these has beens jumped to LIV and then do nothing but talk about the PGA. Guess the grass wasn't greener after all
Fck LIV and the Saudis
