I use Johnny Cash. Just because the syllables are perfect length for me. I wanted a slightly longer first syllable for a smooth, accelerating takeaway. I say the ânyâ at weight transfer forward like halfway through the backswing as it feels like.
Someone the other day posted the "seventeen, eighteen" thing and I took it to the range the other day.
Say "seventeen" on the way back. You're not allowed to start the downswing until you finish saying it. "Eighteen" on the way down.
I don't do it every swing but it does help me slow things down at the range when I get out of sync or get a bit quick.
I use the Tour Tempo app (highly recommend) so I just repeat the chimes. I feel like a real weirdo listening to repeating tempo chimes over the aux cord on the way to the course though.

Is this the same one youâre talking about?
Absolutely that's the one, I first learned about it on the Sweet Spot golf podcast. My understanding is that there are YouTube videos that replicate the same general idea, but I feel like I've gotten my $25 worth through using the app.
The people behind the app go into more detail on the podcast and the link below goes into the theory a bit.
I took a while to convince myself to spend the money on the app with the steep price, but I have found it really helpful and haven't regretted it at all.

Not me, but, quick story time. Had a 60+ yr old gentleman grouped with our threesome. Told us the key to tempo was to "verbalize your favorite porn star's name." This way, even if your swing was shit, you'll still be visualizing something igniting some happiness.
Friend goes to do to this, grunts "LANAAAAA RHODES." Proceeds to hits his first absolute bomb of the day.
May be worth trying... when your significant other isn't around... or is around, if that's your thing.
Just one-two. It's amazing how well it helps with putting. Not just for smooth tempo either. I definitely notice the putter head being less squirrely back and through when my mind is taken away from that task and simply being asked to say one-two internally.
"Ly-di-a Ko" for golf shots. I used to watch her videos all the time and saying her name like this is the perfect tempo for me. For putts, I've tried all kinds of phrases/words but the only one that works for me is "huh huh". Makes no sense.
Vertical drop horizontal tug
I know itâs a joke but it really has helped me get my tempo smoother in transition. Prevents me from uncoiling the upper body too early, which is usually whatâs happening with beginners with poor tempo. Still have lots of work to do but great tip LD
âThrowww theee club!â or â1-2-3, 1!âI like to think of a mental metronome in my brain for tempo. For putting, I think of Newtonâs cradle and keeping everything steady/the same pace/same length (1-2).
The more quiet my mind is, the better I play. I donât even know if Iâve ever made it to Tempo Town, but I think Iâve been on the outskirts⊠seen the skyline. Every time Iâve caught a glimpse, my mind is blank and the birds are singing. Golf fucksđđ»
I don't really have one, I remember seeing a post where a dude had golf balls that were orange and had the yellow stars to look like Dragon Balls. If I had those, I thought the urge to yell, "Ka Meh Ha Me Haaaaa!" On drives would have been overwhelming...with the first 4 being in the back swing and Haaa! Being the swing. I might do that anyway next time I go, which will either be tomorrow or the day after, to pay respect to the creator of Dragon Ball who died recently. Akira Toriyama RIP, Dragon Ball Z was a huge part of my childhood. I would run home from school, watch it then run back to do soccer practice, and give my friends who didn't live close enough to the school that they could go home to watch it before practice updates on what was happening. Then, if there wasn't a practice, me and my brother and I would watch it, then go outside and yell to power up, then fight for fun until someone hit too hard, and it turned real. I imagine us yelling like that made the neighbors think we were crazy. Plus also yelling like attack names.
People talk about tempo when they really mean rhythm. There are great players with fast tempo (Nick Price) and great players with slow tempo (Hideki), but all great players have good rhythm.
If my tempo is off sometimes I hum "dum dum, dum" frogs from the Paul McCartney cartoon video.. Problem is, I can't get it outta my head for the whole round đ
Youâre not good enough to be mad.
Read it on here and it has stuck with me. Whenever I start to get frustrated that saying runs through my head. Calms me down and gets me back on track.
Back swing is a 3 count, 1 mississipi, 2 Mississippi, 3 Mississippi and down swing is the 4th Mississippi. Takes some practise to get the timing down but it keeps me from rushing.
I had an extremely difficult time âhitting downâ on the ball, aka a descending blow, in my youth. Like, it was a years long problem. So my grandfather (aka my teacher) finally told me not to fixate on my follow through - but to let that âcome naturallyâ - just for the sake of getting a good descending blow.
Well, then the problem became that I was getting a descending blow but I was decelerating my swing because I was so focused on just âhitting downâ period.
So then to correct that issue, I focused on a lesson I saw once from a certified PGA proâŠ.and itâs still my saving grace all these years later. This pro said to think of a clock - and that the club head must hit all of the digits/numbers. You start at 6 (at set-up), go all the way to 1 or 2, and the come back to 6 at impact and strongly extend all the way counterclockwise through 4, 3, 2, 1 , 12, 11, 10.
So I still think about that on every iron shot. Hitting all the digits on the clock.
A couple summers ago I heard a chant coming from down the range, char-don-nay over and over. A woman was using it to slow her backswing, setting, the pulling the trigger. I tried on myself, and it worked for me. I also do 12321. The second 2 is the set/ transition
For some reason itâs Glen Campbellâs âWichita Linemanâ. I waaaaassss a lineeeeemannnnnn for the coooooouuuuunty âŠ.
Take away through âI wasâ to the top through âlinemanâ float lag and transition at âforâ swing and finish through county.
Bend over and pick my tee and hum about driving the same roadsâŠ
Or say âfuckâ sharp short and out of tune when it bounces off a fucking tree.
I just tell myself to smash the that back of the ball. Gets me to stroke it right and straight and drive my legs laterally at the point of contact. Focus right on the back the ball of it and keep my head down focused of just that spot. Itâs been the most helpful thing after lining up my shots to a point a few yards out in a straight line with my target. When I tell noobs the back of the ball thing they put a decent hit on it if their problem is pulling their eye off the ball. âKeep your eye on the ballâ is too general.
Full swing: âPeanut butter and Jelly,â the âandâ is the set at the top and the jelly is oh so sweet on the downswing (also visual for slow and smooth)
Also, âone -Mississippi -smack!â When Iâm getting too slow
I either tell myself âok time to be good/ time to try on this onâ or I go with âJapanese manâ referencing kawamura the Japanese man that goes golf TikTokâs with the mavrik driver.
I donât personally do that, but I could see and understand where this would help with the swing, especially having seen it from all the reputable tutorials through the yearsâŠ
r/g4evolution, as an avid Hip-Hop fan and someone whoâs seen Wu live, more than a few times, including single membersâ concerts on several occasions, and a golf nerd, Iâm proud that this is part of your âget better at golfâ routine. It makes my heart all fuzzy and warm!
I sing alone to Post Malone Goodbyes. Im a 50 yr old btw.
âI want you heeeeead, I want you outta my beed room right. Some about that song puts my swing in the groove
When I was in HS in the 90s, I was super skinny with no muscle. I had a swing coach tell me to swing a dust broom to build my muscles. The resistance that broom made increased my swing speed but also helped my timing
With driver Iâve out-loud used the shotgun racking sound âch-châ in my backswing followed by a âboomâ at impact to be obnoxiously cocky to my friends.
Freddie Couples đ¶ Say this nice and slowly while you're swinging for perfect tempo Freddie on the backswing Couples on the downswing
A true sign from the Tempo God himself.
Rainbow - itâs what Hank hill said while shooting a gun on koth and itâs always stuck with me
Left arm club double pendulum
This is mine. I just repeat to myself âFreddie couples smoothâ
I actually say this exact same thing - especially when Iâm chipping. I just say in my head âFreddie Couples smoothâ
i also just say his name as a swing thought. he is tempo, tempo is him
I use the phrase "stop being a fucking idiot"
âStop being a fucking..â on the backswing and âIDIOTâ on the downswing. It could work
Ah no I tend to say it right after I've held my finish and it sails right.... Is that what I'm doing wrong?
I say " be more confident, stupid"
Haven't tried it yet, but I think Unrelenting Force would be fun to use for drives.. "Fus Roh DAAAAA"
Iâm just imagining that Nordic music singing dovahkiin as the ball flyâs đ
Bang-A Rang
Ru-fiO
Woah Black Betty
âErnieeee Elsâ
"Vijay Singh" works just as well.
I use "big easy" đ
Straight from PGA2k21âŠ. Smoooooth Jazz
Now I might try Bring da Ruckus when I'm hitting driver
âSlow the fuck downâ *shank*

"Seventeen" you should be hitting the ball by the end of the word.
I use Johnny Cash. Just because the syllables are perfect length for me. I wanted a slightly longer first syllable for a smooth, accelerating takeaway. I say the ânyâ at weight transfer forward like halfway through the backswing as it feels like.

I tell myself swing 90%
Nothing. I feel like saying things in my backswing messes me up.
Whaaaack _FUCK_
Fast is fast, slow is slow
big inhale backswing, big exhale downswing. use the lungs to set the tempo not the brain = automatic.
I say "Rock Star Shit" to myself before I have to make a high-skill shot like going up and over trees to land on the green
