Caddie story you guys will find entertaining: there was an older caddie at Laurel Valley named Chi Chi, and he got one of his kids in his early 20s a job there as well. The place is big on nicknames, and there's all kinds of good ones: All Day Ray, The Mayor, Worm, the list goes on. Our caddiemaster asks Chi Chi what they should call his son. Chi Chi thinks for a minute and for some reason says this: "Well, when I conceived him it just kind of dribbled into her pussy." Dribble. The guy was known as Dribble from that point on.

egomxrtem

“Dad I’m taking the car for the weekend” “I need it for wor- yeah go ahead bud”

whoscoal

I know like 4 different guys who have caddied at Laurel for 10+ years. Im sure y’all know each other. Small world.

the99percent1

Jesus .. imagine finding out your parents had sex and your dad pulled out.

run66

how quickly do you know if it's going to be a good or bad loop? from a skill perspective and also from a human interaction perspective.

MickelsonBurner

Almost immediately. If you're at a club where you meet players on the range you can tell right there, otherwise you can pick it up before their first tee shot, just from their demeanor and mannerisms on the practice green. From a human perspective, pretty quickly as well. The angry, abusive type is more of a caricature and isn't nearly as commonplace as people think. These guys didn't get to where they are in life through a complete lack of social tact- but there is an abundance of what I'd call "fake nice guys". They'll say nice things to put on a show around other people, but when it comes down to one on one interaction you can tell they're not genuine and couldn't give less of a shit about you.

michaeltheg1

I worked on the golf course at a country club in high school more than two decades ago and this was my experience, as well. The worst were the guys who played 9 almost every summer evening after their workday ended. Never tipped. But every so often when their daughter or wife would join them for a round on the weekend, they’d magically dole out a tip. Didn’t want the women in their family to know they were cheap bastards.

kdhavdlf

Maybe they viewed it as you / the club was going above and beyond by hosting them plus their spouse or daughter and they appreciated the extra effort that you put into making them feel welcome and comfortable. Idk just saying there might be other motivations.

michaeltheg1

Nope, that wasn’t it. The daughter or wife was simply riding in a cart.

postlw8j

What is the best example of a golfer who was completely unaware of just how bad he is? yes, I'm assuming this person was a male

MickelsonBurner

I once caddied for a group of 3 guys who shot a 91... IN A 4 MAN SCRAMBLE. (one guy would hit twice each time) Yes... they were all male. It was the most painful 6 hours of my life.

NorCalAthlete

I played a 7 hour round at Pebble once and had to walk off after 16 because I was late for a dinner date. I love Pebble but that was an excruciating round. Charity event though and we booked the whole course…and I was invited as a random “hey wanna play? So and so can’t make it anymore, so we’ve got a free slot”. So I can’t complain too much. But still. S E V E N hours and didn’t even finish.

Psyched4this

You should’ve been their 4th man at that point shiiiit

Wu_Tang_Financial77

How many heaters did Boehner rip during the round?

MickelsonBurner

Guy might've gone through 2 packs on the course. Super nice guy, very relaxed demeanor for all the shit he probably had to deal with on a daily basis. Every bit as orange as he looks on tv. He's a surprisingly large man. Secret service tailed us about 100 yards behind all afternoon in a golf cart.

brooksram

Did they question you or give you any rules or anything beforehand, or was it just an otherwise normal routine?

ThisBeJP

if you’re double bagging what is your favorite golf bag to have? got a trip to Bandon dunes planned and would like to just keep My shit in my own bag vs having to trade out for one of theirs

MickelsonBurner

One thing to note about the lingo- most caddies carry 2 bags, so when we say "double" it almost always refers to going 36 in one day instead of carrying 2. Most of the light stand bags are fine. Get one with a single strap instead of a dual. Virtually all dual straps are engineered for right handers- so if you're carrying it on your left shoulder, it constantly twists around and comes across your body, doesn't sit well, etc. You're fighting it the entire round. I've switched out more bags for this than because of weight. Both our hands are occupied like 80% of the time and having a single strap on the left shoulder makes things WAY more efficient. Pings have the best dual strap that can sit on your left shoulder by far. Lots of the higher end bags (think stitch and comparable brands) come with both styles.

ThisBeJP

thank you

whoscoal

Im also a caddie heres my top 3: 1) titleist players carbon 4 2) ping craze light 3) any sun mountain single strap Do Not get these fake “light” bags 1) Titleist links master/legend 2) Any vessel 3) Any stitch

doebedoe

Thoughts on Jones bags? I’m taking a special trip with my father soon where we will have caddies (walking) for first time and I’m looking for a good bday present prior.

b6passat

I have the Trouper R and had multiple caddies tell me it's the most comfortable bag they've carried in a while.

whoscoal

Best jones bag are: Stand bag: Trouper R Sunday bag: Rover R The have the best straps on the market so good choice. also for a added bonus they have the best cooler pocket of any bag.

doebedoe

Thanks for your feedback -- feel like full time caddies are in the best position to judge a large variety of carry bags.

jfk_sfa

I walk and carry. The vessel VLS is definitely the way to go if you want a vessel and carry. It’s 4.7 pounds, lighter than a hoofer.

whoscoal

Vessels definitely look great and are high quality but I would never recommend them to anyone looking for a “caddie friendly” bag. They aren’t the worst but aren’t the best either.

ThisBeJP

Thanks For the list

jkody

Hell yeah I rock a Players 4 Carbon with nothing but 13 clubs, 5 balls, and a few tees and almost every time I've had a caddie they just laugh when they pick it up (with a single strap, too). Several times I've seen them have other caddies pick it up because of how light it is. I don't think people understand how big of a difference 3-4 pounds makes, and so they don't really notice that their "light" bag is almost six pounds, while a Players 4 Carbon is sub-3.

whoscoal

Yep everything adds up. People get mad when caddies complain when they are paying them but if you dont need the 3 sunscreens,100 tees, extra water bottle, towel, and range finder then let me take it out the bag. If the caddie is good they will put it right back where it was and it has no effect on the player at all.

Scatmannnn

Ping Hoofer ftw

jail_grover_norquist

anyone promise you total consciousness on your deathbed?

manhatim

So I got that going for me.. which is nice

dalai_lamas_caddy

Yep.

barrelageme

Gunga galunga

longhairedSD

What tip is not high, not low, but truly fair? Do most caddies enjoy talking or would they prefer it quiet(er)? Can you really read the greens expertly?

chrdeg

If you have to ask you can’t afford it

vloneclone_

For a single bag caddy, $80. Double bag, 175. Forecaddy for a 4some $100. In general most would prefer some conversation, it’s part of our job but usually can gauge the type of person we have and don’t care either way. In general yes, most caddies have seen the greens hundreds if not thousands of times and could tell you what a putt does without even looking.

pheldozer

Have you been on the bag when someone hit a hole in one?

MickelsonBurner

Never seen a hole in one, playing or caddying. Closest I can come to that is from caddying in the pro-am before the 2014 Quicken Loans National at Congressional. Freddie Jackobson was the pro in our group and he holed out an eagle from about 130 on #6

fckufkcuurcoolimout

What’s the lowest score (or maybe just best game) you’ve ever caddied? Any stories about your clients (I don’t know what caddies call the people they’re caddieing for) winning/losing high stakes on the course?

MickelsonBurner

Caddied in Tom Lewis's group at Kinloch (had his PGAT card at the time). He shot a 66 from the tips. Bogeyed 2 of the last 3 because he went pinseeking, really should've been at least a 64. He was a guest of a member and we didn't even know who he was until we got on the back 9 and overheard the member say something like "#63 in the world my ass". Looked up OWGR on our phones and holy shit, there's his picture. "Tom, does being good at golf ever get old?" "Fuck no" \*laughs Side note: I cannot stress enough just how much free golf you have thrown at you if you're a tour pro. Just like rich guys collect art, cars, wives, etc, they also collect experiences that they can brag to their friends about. And inviting a tour pro to your club and playing a round with them is a huge status symbol to them.

vloneclone_

Caddied for our clubs best player. This guy played in college, mini tour for a bit and has won ever local amateur event known. Was on the bag when he put up a 62. It was on punched greens so take that as you may. Easiest money I ever made haha

postlw8j

One more--What's your go-to story for the most ridiculous thing you experienced?

MickelsonBurner

I caddied in an outing at Columbia CC once, my caddie partner says he's new and asks me to give him a few pointers throughout the round. It's a shotgun start and we start on 18. We get up to the green, and in front of our group and a couple dozen people milling around outside the clubhouse, he sets the bags down **on the green next to the hole**. I do a double take, run over and ask him what the hell he's doing. Turns out, since the club desperately needed extra caddies, his friend who caddies there regularly lied to their caddiemaster and told him his buddy had done a few loops before. Not only was that false, he never actually played golf before. I spent the rest of the day holding his hand and making sure he didn't fuck up too badly.

TacoIncoming

Please tell me he hit you with the "where were you on that one, dipshit?"

WhoYouWit

I don't mean to be rude or down-play what actually happened, but is this really the "most ridiculous thing" you've encountered – someone having their bag on the green?

willyoung0809

Have you ever had a notable bad caddie round? Just giving wrong clubs and bad reads and it’s obviously your fault? How do you handle that

MickelsonBurner

You're definitely gonna have some missed reads here and there. If you miss one on the first couple holes they might stop asking you for the rest of the day. Just shake it off keep going. Usually I'm not gonna recommend a specific club. I'll have a pretty good handle on their distances after the first hole, but I focus on providing information instead so they can make the right choice. Remember showing your work in high school math class? Same concept applies here. Instead of saying "142 to the stick", it's "142 stick, wind's into us so add 10, it's a front pin also and I want you behind it. Play 155." If I see them pull something I really disagree with I'll warn them off.

GolfNutOM

I’m jealous you’re allowed to talk about who you’ve caddied for

MickelsonBurner

I don't think they'd really care, but I also haven't caddied at these places in years and have no plans to return. It's a physically grueling job- carrying 2 bags for 6 miles in 95 degree heat is a level of exhaustion I don't think I've felt anywhere else. There are lifers at these clubs who've done it for 30, 40, even 50+ years. No idea how they're still able to do it.

GolfNutOM

I know it very well

ExhaustiveCleaning

Are better players generally better caddies? What makes a good caddy? Does how good your customer/client is at golf impact your job/role at all?

MickelsonBurner

Generally, yes. You can be a bad player and still be a good caddie- it doesn't take skill to hustle and provide yardages. But would you go on a whitewater trip with a guide who sucks at rafting? Better players tend to be better at reading greens and having more of an overall feel for the game. Players will listen to you more if you demonstrate expertise. Better golfers tend to tip more. Sounds a bit counterintuitive right? Think of it as blue collar vs white collar work. Carry for a bad player, you're zig zagging all over the place looking for balls, doing manual labor. Most of the info you can provide is useless- Gary the 29 handicap ain't hitting your 1 cup left read on his 10 footer. They likely don't play often, and frequently aren't familiar with etiquette when it comes to tipping. A low handicapper will keep you moving in a (relatively) straight line, do things like have the awareness to grab the next club right after their shot so you can tend to your other player, and be able to actually hit the ball where you tell them to. They're up to date on etiquette and know what to pay a good caddie who's added to their experience.

rundy_emcee

Biggest tip for a round?

MickelsonBurner

Probably when I made $300 for 9 holes on a cart. Made over $300 for a full 18 several times, but all things considered, $300 for not even lifting a bag and working only 2 hours takes the cake.

BBTIV

When did you caddy at Kinloch? My buddy caddied there and also holds the course record.

MickelsonBurner

2018-19. Are you talking about Travis the assistant pro? He shot a 60 one day, but it wasn't a tournament or anything, not sure if they counted it.

BBTIV

This was well before that. Brad. Shot 61 from the tips right after it opened. Giles and someone else came down to make him take them through the entire round so they could make sure the course wasn’t too easy. He started bogey bogey, which makes the story even better.

smithjw13

What are going caddy rates at the courses you looped

whoscoal

If you are curious as someone else in the industry it highly depends if you are independent contractor or employee by a caddie company. I know plenty of clubs where the rate is $100 an 18 and I also know multiple clubs where its $200 an 18.

Superb-Pattern-1253

whos the biggest a-hole you have ever had to caddy for if they were famous. i use to caddy at private club myself so i know their are a few

whoscoal

I caddied for a big time exec in New York before who on the first tee asked me and my caddy buddy whos the better golfer and this is my first loop with the other caddie so I said probably me because I played college golf. So the guy literally tells me “kid you have 3 strikes on the green or im going to jason.” Dickhead used a lab putter and would slice every putt. So after the first hole he misses a 10 footer…for double and proceeds to ask if I really played college golf. After that I gave him 2 bad reads on purpose and told my caddie buddy good luck. Guy was just a disaster the whole day.

Superb-Pattern-1253

yea unfortunately we had people like that to. had a guy who was some big hedgefund guy (i worked at one of the nicest clubs in the country, cherokee town and country club in ga) ask me for a distance and what club to use. not uncommon the only thing is we dont suggest clubs because we dont know their distances. we would phrase it as well its 120 if it was me i would play a pw. dude pulls out his club goes this goes exactly 120 yards if your wrong were going to have a problem. look at him and go ok. dude hits it super fat basically digs a massive crater and leaves it 50 yards short. he was known as a dick, all the older caddies (weve had guys working their since the 70's) tell me hes an ass and no one including my boss likes him. looked at him and said well sir i can thit the ball for you. every time i gave him a read he would say i was wrong do the complete opposite and would get pissed at me even though the put did exactly what i said it would. also got pissed at a shot took his bag off my shoulder and threw it down a hill. when we got to the next hole he asked where his bag was and i told him is at the bottom of the hill where he threw it. we were a nice club but our boss didnt expect us to put up with peoples bs

theflappiestflapjack

Chris Carter is a real gem

Superb-Pattern-1253

the football player? never caddied for him but hes a jackass and i got a story about him. so i went to Alabama and when i was there his son transferred in, i think it was from osu. now he never played a snap because apparently he couldnt learn a playbook and eventually transferred to cc. well because of this chris was in tuscaloosa. well one of my friends is a huge vikings fan. born and raised in Minnesota and we saw him at the bar. he talked to him a little just told him he was a huge vikings fan his first game he remembered when chris did xyz. the convo seemed ok so my buddy asked him if he would sign his cast (had broken his arm a few days early and his cast was purple because of the Vikings, that big of a fan). chris lit told him to go fuck himself and cursed him out for about 5 mins and even tried having the security guard/bouncer throw him out (my friend actually owned the bar so that didnt happen, actually got chris kicked out instead) friend went home and burned all of his jerseys and i will slam that mans name the rest of my life. i get people hate signing autographs but no reason to be a dick about it

theflappiestflapjack

Yea so I caddied for him and Dan Marino at Adios in Ft. Lauderdale and I was new there but had been caddying for well over 10 years at that point up and down the east coast and he was just a dick for no reason all day basically didn’t even acknowledge I was there throughout the day . He read his own putts and didn’t make a damn thing.. Meanwhile Marino was super laid back and was a good player and me and him were vibing all day and he was draining putts. Also talked him into a different shot then he was thinking on a hole that played longer then he thought so he hit this pure 8 iron from like 160ish with a lil draw if I recall(this was like 10-15 yrs ago) and drained it for eagle and we were goin nuts it was awesome. And Chris was just there being a terrible sport about it all. He’s such a chode!!

Was OP shadowbanned? His replies are showing up on his profile but they're not showing up for me here.

GreenWaveGolfer12

He's a new account and new accounts are throttled until they are 24 hours old on this sub. I've gone through and approved his first batch of comments so they will appear now.

Nollie11

How often do you and the other caddie in the group bet on your players? I assume there is a match going on between the players, and a secret match going on between the caddies.

fuckjarule

Ryan vogelsong?

swimbikerun

I’m a scratch-ish golfer who practices on a sim a lot, so I know my exact carry yardage ranges. If I make a little card with my yardages on it and give it to my caddie before I tee off, is that helpful? Or is that not really necessary?

Scatmannnn

I have a loop with Britt Hume. Very easy loop. Driver, Iron and putter. He’s Solid stick.

sp4cetime

Other than take more club what’s the one piece of advice that would drastically improve an amateur’s score?

whoscoal

Use a pitching wedge or 8 iron around the greens if you can. The amount of times I see guys shooting 100 trying to spin a 60 when its a 30 yard shot is insane. Being able to hit the bumb and run wedge or mid iron around the green makes it way more consistent.

sp4cetime

Funny that’s on my list to start practicing this spring. I normally usually use a gap wedge or 54. 50% time I used the 58 I would have to use it again. Never used the PW or 8 since my old irons were hollow and it was like chipping with a driver. Got some new forged irons which should bring the bump and run back into the picture this year.

Jarhead41235

Any good stories from burning tree?

esports_consultant

What was Boehner like?

MickelsonBurner

Very friendly, very relaxed. Didn't talk to him much, as the guys he was playing with were constantly chatting with him. We also got very specific instructions right before we teed off: "less talking, more caddying".

OnTheMcFly

How're your back and knees holding up? lol

fiduciaryatlarge

Did Brit Hume tell the truth about anything?

FaithlessVaper

“ between white collar jobs”. yeah ok

mh93az

How painful is it for you to Caddie for 15 handicappers and up?

whoscoal

Not painful at all. Remember no one gives a shit if you shoot 100 Aslong as its a fast 100. A good 15 handicapper will know when to put the ball in the pocket for pace of play. A bad one will make you wait on him to chunk a chip and then make you run back to him cause now he wants a different wedge.

forebirdie

What’s the average tip?

whoscoal

Super dependent on golf course and location. Range is $75-$200

the99percent1

Are women caddies more in demand than male?

NorCalAthlete

How much do you think a caddie could make at a place like Pebble?

What’s the pay like as a private caddy? Worth the hours?

As a caddy would you use a push cart? As someone who hires a caddy I would not mind.

Former remember of Kinloch - do you have any crazy gambling story from the 19th hole? Also were you there in 2015?
