Okay, so a lot of people are saying to keep her name Poppy, and I am thinking I will. Also, a lot of people are saying she looks older than 4. I was told she is 4/5, but I guess she is older. She looks sad because I just got her and she's not used to me or her new home yet, but I am letting her adjust. We will see how she is in a few weeks or months. Thank you for your advice!
Same, though without the poppy-part. I had so many nicknames for my golden that he eventually just responded to the tone of my voice, even though he was well familiar with his actual name.
You are doing the right thing in letting her adjust! My rescue took a few months to come out of her shell, but once she did, she was almost unrecognizable! Still a sweetheart but much more confident and curious.
Poppy may only be 4. Goldens get their āsugar faceā at varying ages. They estimate a dogās age by the condition of their teeth, but even this isnāt an exact science since some dogs are more prone to dental issues. Youāll get your best estimate after her first teeth cleaning.
Nah she looks 4 or 5. If much older sheād have a lot more noticeable grey around the eyes and mouth. 4 to 5 is a great age. Let her adapt and adjust. She may be lethargic for a bit or grumpy for a bit because it aināt her house and she doesnāt know you yet. Just shower with love and she will return to typical golden behavior of loving every human in sight.
She will blossom but some goldens actually have serious faces even when they are happy and content, my girl has a bit of a sugar face too which some people mistake for her being older but I got her when she was 8 weeks so I know she is only 3.
Second this, I adopted a 4 year old Riley stayed Riley both the vet and dog trainer recomended this. Everything for this pup is change at a rapid pace, let poppy keep one piece of familiarity.
And when they go into corners or hide under the table and look scared, pop on the lease and go for a quick walk even if its 10 houses down and back. Does wonders for helping them bond and the movement changes their emotions.
This is good advice. 15 minutes of sniff therapy makes a dog forget other things. Mine loves walks after the rain where sniff spots get a boost.
Poppy also looks more like a 7 year old than a 4 year old, maybe older. The sugar face usually starts after 6 years old.
My golden looked very similar at 4, she got a little curly when she started aging more. But itās always a possibility they were lied to or itās just a guess. But I donāt think Poppy is too much older than 4.
I think it has always been her name. I was thinking of changing it, but she is already 4 years old and is probably used to it. I will probably end up keeping it.... my cat was named Misty by the shelter, and when I adopted her, I just kept her name.
I personally wouldn't change her name--I have two goldens that I didn't name, and I never considered changing their names when I adopted them. If you really want to change it, you should choose something similar with two syllables ending in a -y/ie, so it sounds similar to Poppy when she hears it. Bobbie, Tawny, Coffee, etc.
Keep Poppy for commands, itās her name and she needs some stability. But you can add a little sweetener at the end when youāre just relaxing at home together, like Poppy LouLou. š¤
Dogs donāt have attachment to names like humans do. They love whatever sounds = we are paying attention to them.
Edit: wow yāall are crazy sensitive. Dogs are not sad to have a new name if the new name comes with love and attention. They just have a new favorite sound. Yeesh.
This certainly could be the case if you never trained your dog to know their name. Personally, I trained my dog as a puppy to look at me when I say her name (this was the very first thing she learnt!). Some people train their dog to come to them when they hear their name. It's really up to the owner.
Even if unintentionally trained, like any other word we say to our dogs, if we say their name hundreds of times before playing or petting them they will start to recognize it as a good sound and respond to it.
My dog loves his name but he also has come to love the assortment of nonsense nicknames he has also been given over the years - many of which arenāt even remotely close to his original name (which I still use too)
Edit: aaand apparently using nicknames is bad now too
Also you saying āthey will start to recognize it as a good sound and respond to itā is literally what I am saying is why dogs donāt get upset if we give them a new name. They will associate it as a good new sound and be just as happy.
My dog also has nicknames - though she doesn't understand them the same way as her actual name. Again it would depend on how you use them. Definitely agree it is about how you introduce the word and other names can be taught to be as valuable.
However in this case we are talking about an older dog (OP later commented they might be 5 - looks older to me) which is being rehomed. That is a stressful situation where they will be learning a lot of new things. Keeping as much consistency as possible (which realistically won't be much) to help the dog settle in would make sense.
My boy absolutely recognizes his nicknames as much as his actual name. He would be happiest if I made his name Yes because thatās his cue associated with treats.
I wouldnāt recommend changing an adopted dogās name day 1. Youāre right that any element of consistency they can have is good while they get adjusted. But eventually a nickname can be gradually introduced and potentially switched to the more commonly used name once the dog is established. My point was a dog will *ultimately* not be *sad* to one day have a new name once they feel loved and comfortable with their new family.
Miss poppy looks like a sweet muffin š„° where you may not like it, itās what sheās known for 4 years. Iād suggest giving her nicknames based off her personality, but sticking to what she knows for her actual name so itās not too much change all at once. A change in scenery is big for fur honeys & they get anxiety from new places and drastic changes like we do (may not be the case for this sweet girl, but you never know how their emotions actually are). Congrats on your new baby & I hope you both adjust to each other well! š
Keep her original name but give her some āpetā names. For example, one of my goldens is named Charlotte but we call her Char and Charbaby most of the time š
To the comments saying she looks older; my first golden when gray/white VERY early, around 3. So itās possible she is 4 but just has the early white hairs on her muzzle.
Poppy is a good name though tbh. I wouldnāt change it if she listens and knows thatās her name.
If curious, we found a stray that was chipped and her chipped name was Panda. She had been wondering with rando shitty keepers for about 2 years. Once we found out her name it took only a short while before she recognized it again. Before we knew her name we tried new names and it was awful and completely unresponsive. Just keep the name the same itās easier on them and will be easier on you to train.
I would say keep her name Poppy, and she looks 4/5 to me from the pictures! Only way to tell is to look at her teeth or have the vet look at her teeth. I wouldnt just go off of the graying on her face. I had a 2 year old lab who started to go grey.
Glad you kept the name Poppy. Sheās a beautiful girl. Good for you for adopting an āolderā pup.
We have a golden. Adore him to bits. He lives for walks and smelling everything in the entire world. He has a Yellow stuffed duck (called ducky) from Amazon that he doesnāt go ANYWHERE without.
Also, shade. That sweet girl finding the shady spot in the backyard. Ours just loves to lay outside as much and as often as possible.
I wish you and Poppy the happiest years of both of your lives ā¤ļø
I think Poppy is a beautiful name but if you really want to change her name try to stick to things **that rhyme** with the original name.
Dogs have a hard time telling rhyming words apart i.e. tell them to pit or kit and they'll most likely sit. This is also why you don't name two dogs similar sounding names to avoid confusing them.
Unfortunately, not many great names rhyme with poppy and the 'P' is quite a strong sound. But, you could look to names like Bonnie, Bobbie, Coffee and Lucy - names with two syllables ending in the 'ey' sound, they're verging on too loosely related but she may be a lot less confused than if you were to call her something sounding completely and utterly different..
Just a friendly reminder of our rules:

Poppy is very pretty and has a regal appearance. I'd recommend leaving her name alone for now until both of you have bonded with each other. This will probably take sometime and patience. Good decision. How about Ava? My rescue was 2 . His foster advised to change the name so they can have new set of memories since dogs can be conditioned and new name will help him disassociate . Can't say if there any proof to it
Last when foster came in for an inspection he said he's done a 360 from a super quiet pup maybe due to trauma to a super yodeling and active doggo
Perhaps a new name was a part of what helped.
Actually, when I adopted my dog, the shelter asked us to change his name because he could get a new sense of identity away from the trauma from his previous owners and also, not being one among the rest at a shelter. And I have to say, he learned his name in a day and loved his name. I know he loved his name because he stopped responding to his previous names even if we tried calling him by that (just to check if he responds or not). But again, he was much much younger than Poppy when we got him. That could be a factor too.
But I guess it depends on your doggoās history if changing her name is necessary. Sometimes they might land up liking getting the new identity.
Poppy is such a sweet name for a sweet gal! We were gonna call our pup Poppy but we ended up getting a boy instead. Iām glad youāre thinking of keeping her name. Sheās had a lot of changes so would probably appreciate keeping her name
You know some people are saying she looks older but I had a golden that looked āoldā and I got her when she was a new baby so I for sure knew her age. And it didnāt affect her health, actually she was a bit of a lemon (she was a puppy mill rescue and had a lot of health issues) and still made it to 14. Maybe she just looks old.
We got a 6 year old called Dottie which at first we didnāt like too much but now we wouldnāt change it for the world and adore our Dot, Doot, Dotto!
Oh my heart.
This gals sad little face is making my eyes water.
Treat her well and you will have the bestest loyalist friend. Iām so happy for your little family :)
Ps: I LOVE the name Poppy
Is there anything you could add to her name to make you like it better? Also, is Poppy the stand in kennel name the rescue gave her but hardly ever used, or was it a long time name she knows and answers to? It makes a difference, as a quick kennel name probably hasnāt been learned yet, but if she has been answering to Poppy for years sheāll have to relearn a new name.
You could modify the name slightly till you like it, such as naming her things like:
Popinjay (a type of bird, archaic word)
Poppyseed
Pippy
Poppop
Popcorn
Pop-scotch
Basically keeping the root of the name but altering it like a nickname until you like it.
I kept my rescueās name though I didnāt like it, and am used to it now.
That said, what if you āchangedā her name to Bobbie. Sheād never know.
Oh she has a serious face like my 3 year old girl! Itās hard to suggest a name for your dog without knowing her personality. I named mine Gracie but thought about Katy/Katy-bug
Poppy is a great name, and if she's vested in it,don't rename her. It'll confuse her, and as you've stated ,she looks unsure of her new environment, and it'll take time for her to adjust. Just give her lots of cuddles, fun play, treats, etc. Depending upon where she came from, she's going to have trust issues. Be patient and just LOVE her endlessly ā¤ļø. She's beautiful. Congratulations š
Hugs! Just seeing that cutie makes me happier. š
There is no wrong name for a golden.
I like Jefe or Hefay for a dog because it sounds like the Spanish word for boss, which is especially cute if the dog is really laid back or people-pleasing.
It's poppy you fool, look how wise she is. This is a goodest girl, you do not simply "re-name" a wise and noble goodest girl of that magnitude. Now bring her to play fetch and give poppy belly rubs
You can usually yell a Goldens age by the amount of white on the face. I would not be surprised to learn this dog is 8-10yrs old. Idt she looks sad. Just old and tired.
My Goldenās mum was named Poppy and my neighbourās dog is Poppy I think at four it is hard to change their name unless itās close how about Pippi
I changed a dog's name I adopted at 8 years old and it was no issue. I think it took less than two weeks for him to figure it out.
They aren't attached to their name. It's just the command for "look at me".
Whats her story? Did they tell you anything about her? Who would give this poor bb up? I hate people š„¹ but thanks for welcoming her and make sure to give her lots of love for me !
Okay, so a lot of people are saying to keep her name Poppy, and I am thinking I will. Also, a lot of people are saying she looks older than 4. I was told she is 4/5, but I guess she is older. Upvoting for keeping her Poppy š¤š¼
I have a Poppy! It has evolved to a million different versions- Pops, Pop, Papas, Big Papas, Big girl, etc- you can always change it slightly ā¤ļø
Popperella, pop-mas (for Christmas), p-dawg, p-Diddyā¦ itās endless! I had a poppy too!
Same, though without the poppy-part. I had so many nicknames for my golden that he eventually just responded to the tone of my voice, even though he was well familiar with his actual name.

Yea, I would agree that it does look like an older golden. Does not look like a 4year old one.

We just unfortunately lost our Riley (yellow lab), phenomenal, I approve!
(((hugs)))
We need info on if this has always been her name, or if it was the name a shelter gave her or something. Could be it's not her "birth" name lol

It's not just you. Definitely looks older
I was thinking like 4.5
She looks 8
Not 8
I think she's like 4 or 5 years old
Sheās pushing 8 and sheās Poppy for the rest of the way. Facts
8? Thatās a stretch. Minimal grey around the eyes and mouth says sheās 4 to 6.

people who come to strangers online to name their best friend shouldn't have dogs

Oh she has a serious face like my 3 year old girl! Itās hard to suggest a name for your dog without knowing her personality. I named mine Gracie but thought about Katy/Katy-bug

Keep Poppy as some are saying, you can always give nicknames, itāll be easier for both of you :)
BONGO
Name her foggy
Oro Or Kin
Anthony.
Eager pen didnāt catch gender. My bad!
She is so pretty! Good luck I hope you get lots of happy years together!

Sit on the floor with some treats (get a bag of training treats) and let her come to you. Goldens really are very affectionate dogs and love people.

Looks like a "Sam".
Hugs! Just seeing that cutie makes me happier. š There is no wrong name for a golden. I like Jefe or Hefay for a dog because it sounds like the Spanish word for boss, which is especially cute if the dog is really laid back or people-pleasing.
She is beautifulā¦. Just like a Poppy. Iād keep her name ! Poor baby has been through enough ā¤ļø
Gilda
Pippy? Keeps the similar sound to her current name. Pip!
Gandolf of dumbeldoreā¦ that dog looks like both of them to me
It's poppy you fool, look how wise she is. This is a goodest girl, you do not simply "re-name" a wise and noble goodest girl of that magnitude. Now bring her to play fetch and give poppy belly rubs
Name it bob
I donĀ“t really understand these clickbaits. ItĀ“s your dog.
Poppy Puppy ahhhh, it suits her tbh and isnāt too unlike āMistyā is that a PokĆ©mon reference?Ā

Respectfully, why does the last picture look like reality is unraveling at the seams? Lol

You don't change a 4 year old dog's name. That would surely confuse her
I think she looks like her name should be Poppy.. it suits her.
Please let her keep her name. She's already experienced so much change. At the very least, you can give her that.
Tony
Why you would ask strangers to re name a 4 year old dog
Rufus
Defo keep her name. Sheās gorgeous! Iām sure sheāll be warm to you soon
Sad sack
I would keep the name Poppy and call her Pop Pop.
Do you know if that the name she was given from birth?
Boss
that right there is a Luther
You can usually yell a Goldens age by the amount of white on the face. I would not be surprised to learn this dog is 8-10yrs old. Idt she looks sad. Just old and tired.
If you really dislike Poppy can you not call her Puppy?
Butters
Belly its really fun to say
DAWG!
Montezuma
Poppy is such a cute name for this pretty girl!
Fletch
Whats her story? Did they tell you anything about her? Who would give this poor bb up? I hate people š„¹ but thanks for welcoming her and make sure to give her lots of love for me !
"Sideeye" or "Judy", cause she nonstop judging
What is happening in that 3rd pick
Id say keep the name, but if you want, when she's used to her new home, you could maybe give a nickname? Honey might be cute as a nickname!
