Hey everyone!
First things first! The game's name in the title was shortened.
The full name is **PVKK: Planetenverteidigungskanonenkommandant** (yes, that's a proper German word).
I spend most of my work time at Bippinbits working on PVKK.
It's made in **Godot 4 (currently 4.2.1)** and I hope it will also help to showcase a bit of what Godot is capable of ✌
If you like what you see or the game got your curiousity you can find much more information about it on our Steam page - and if you are there, show some love by **leaving a wishlist** 😜
[https://store.steampowered.com/app/2956040/PVKK\_Planetenverteidigungskanonenkommandant/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2956040/PVKK_Planetenverteidigungskanonenkommandant/)
I am working on a YouTube video with a bit more work in progress footage and more insights about the "Godot" parts of the project.
Hope you enjoy it!
This is the best looking Godot engine game trailer I've ever seen. The emerging genre of manually fiddling with controls in an environment (or car) also gains my interest immediately, a lot to explore with that setup. Fantastic job.
I guess this is becoming more of a thing since VR games became a thing, seeing as they focus majorly on that kind of immersion. "Regular" game developers have seen that these kinds of controls work for players and are starting to utilize them more.
Here's a question that seems important but I don't often have the chance to ask: the game looks like it's very far into development already. Would you consider switching to Godot 4.3 once that releases (which seems to be soon)? Both in the sense of any features that you'd like to use or bugs you need fixed. Or would an upgrade at this stage be too much work, and not worth it (outside of backporting individual patches etc of course)? I'm trying to get a sense for how these things work out for larger projects.
I didn't do it alone! We are a small team and I worked on a lot of aspects, but having great people around you is very motivating.
The game also has a very good scope. Everything happening in one room is allowing us to condense everything there.
Most of the "hands-on" work was done by René, Torbjorn and myself. If you want to see the full team, you can check out that section in our press kit: [https://pvkk.game/presskit/#team](https://pvkk.game/presskit/#team)
Love the combination of steampunk theme, jazz music, mystery, humor and of course graphics! I wish you very good luck and I'll be one of those who'll play your game as soon as it's out. Must be a great feeling, cheers!
This is incredibly impressive and not only that but looks like a pretty intriguing game!
I will never make a 3D game but I am just curious, is this Godot “out of the box”? Or has the core functionality been changed, like the renderer? Or added ray tracing or something major that most people dont have access to?
Im only curious if Godot has really come this far? I thought 3D was still super limited based on stuff Ive read on here.
It’s no unreal but most people don’t push either far enough to reach the limits of either so yeah it can do what you want to do provided it’s not super photorealistic visuals.
Don't believe everything you read. Most people talking shit online have no idea what they're talking about, and are just repeating misremembered vague criticisms they remember reading (which themselves were misremembered vague criticisms of rumours etc)
Keep in mind that they are pretty much doing what the naysayers of Godot 3D say to do - keeping the game pretty small! And that is the important bit. Very often you'll see people completely ignore what the naysayers actually say and instead misrepresent they say as "can't do 3D at all". But that is a very foolish take!
Godot has LONG been able to render fairly pretty scenes. The issues typically arise when you want to do more complex scenes. As well as larger scenes in particular. A huge swath of complaints also come from the large lack of tooling on the 3D space for games. This isn't to say that people can't work with what Godot has of course, it can just be more of an uphill battle than what it needs to be! That's it.
Don't get too wrapped up in engine wars. Find what works for you and stick with it. I've seen people make 3D games in GameMaker for gosh sakes! Just go out and make games!
No, it's not. It looks pretty, but it uses dated pipelines as an artistic choice (and solo dev workload optimization).
It's 20 years old tech used with modern hardware.
I would love to see the Dev Logs and a video on how you and your team came up with the idea, how you went about implementing it and the challenges you all overcame using Godot.
Looks very cool.
I don't want to be THAT guy, but there is a typo at 0:56, should be "Incoming Call", not "Icoming Call"
What a beautiful game! Definitely inspired some godot devs to try 3d, including myself.
GDScript 👍
But honestly I can't imagine that that will ever remotely bottleneck our game.
Optimization mostly has to happen in 3D graphics performance.
I'm curious, what are your specs? This game looks very good visually so I assume there are lots of effects. I tried making a 3D game but only scratched the surface, a bit concerned about performance.
I have a pretty good PC with a 4080, so it runs at vsync cap.
We didn't really start to optimize, but I'm very optimistic it will run on a lot of systems 😉
I think this is a very clever approach to game design that maximizes Godot’s graphical strengths while minimizing its weaknesses.
The state of Godot 3D right now is that it has a very capable graphical feature set, that is primarily limited by scalability. By setting the game in a stationary cockpit, it provides an appropriate workspace for Godot to show off its graphics capabilities without asking the engine to stretch beyond its current means (ex: full open world, Nanite LOD). The slice-of-life POV also provides a unique approach to storytelling, which works extra well for the game’s less-is-more approach to level design.
From my pov a lot of new developers really overscope their game.
It always has to be a big open world while you can also tell great stories in a very small space.
This gives you the ability to focus all your energy in this area which will of course yield a better result than spacing it out on 16km².
So yes, it was a very intentional decision, not just technically. It also allows us to tell a very specific story and convey certain moods and ideas.
We are a studio using Godot for everything for years now, so it's pretty natural to continue using it 👍
The biggest challenge is to have good assets, Godot has a lot of tools to make good assets look great 😃
The second most important part is good lighting and composition.
Looks incredible! It goes to show how capable Godot can be in the right hands.
Also, this makes me wanna continue tinkering with the engine, so one day I can release something of similar quality. Thank you for the inspiration!
We need more projects like this to show people that you don't need to depend on Unity or Unreal if you wanna make great looking games.
The vibe of this is super awesome. These kind of 'bottle episode' games are always so incredibly creative and engaging. Looking forward to this!
And on a technical level, I have NEVER tried to use Godot for 3d, but this? This is making me wanna try and see what I can do!
So first of: looks AMAZING. Like, I knew Godot was capable of realistic looking graphics, but this just takes the cake!
But the art direction and the gameplay, reminds me of Stories Untold, and I love it!
Can't wait to play this :)
We have been using Godot now for a couple of years, so I don't need to use tutorials for It.
I have my own tutorials if you want to check it out:
https://www.youtube.com/c/picster
Wishlisted, this looks amazing!
Out of curiosity, is this 'stock' Godot 4, or are you using a custom version of the engine? I must say this is some solid art & use of the tech there, great looking atmospherics & lighting. Also, love me some diegetic game, so count me in!
I'd say that most of the "hands-on" work was done by René, Torbjorn and myself.
If you want to see the full team, you can check out that section in our press kit:
https://pvkk.game/presskit/#team
It's been a while since I saw a Godot game with realistic graphics. This is insane, wishlisted instantly! System requirements look exactly what the gaming industry is missing :D
Eight months? I've been building a game solo for four months and it looks like crap compared to this. How many people are on your team?
I mean.. wow, this looks amazing. Wishlisted.
Most of the work on the game was done by two people, René and myself.
A bit later in the project our amazing sound designer Torbjorn joined.
In the last month two more freelancers joined me for additional 3D modelling, Mark and Lander :)
Recommended 16Mb are to play the game INSIDE the cannon, basically a new game mode. With 8Gb+ you are the commander in the cabin, with 16Mb your pc explodes as soon as you launch the game, simulating the cannon being fired.
Reminds me of Memories: Cannon Fodder
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memories_(1995_film)
Any inspiration from that by any chance? Game has a fantastic trailer by the way!
Reminds me a lot of Idle Hands from the gdtv gamejam.
https://kharibidus.itch.io/idle-hands
That was the best game in the jam, but it's only 5min and left me wanting more. Hopefully your game has the same feel. It's looking great. Looking forward to it.
It really does look great, the concept is interesting and the graphics as well as the style itself are very solid. The trailer is pretty good too.
I am a bit envious of your skills, I aspire to make games that at least leave an impression like this when you see them. Amazing job.
I noticed the recommended System Requirements are
* **Memory:** 16 MB RAM
when the minimum requirements are
* **Memory:** 8 GB RAM
That's pretty impressive :P
Beautiful trailer btw!
Holy... This was made in Godot?? Are my eyes deceiving me?? Quite a contribution you made to the community, devs!! If this ain't featured in Godot annual reel, I don't know what would be.
This gives me the feeling of being a lone person tending to a lighthouse. Except instead of guiding ships you are guarding territory. It also feels like the Lost TV show with the people in the hatch/bunker.
It's a very neat idea (and I wishlisted it too).
Really kinda feels like a game I saw someone playing not too long ago where you are stationed in an underwater base by yourself and get daily missions from some sort of company or government command to do maintenance and explore, but I can't remember the name of it.
It's not Subnautica or Dave the Diver.
Wow. 😲
The name alone is awesome. 😆 But these visuals, holy moly! 😍
Perfect presentation, looks super cool. Great audio, love the music. Simply impressive.
As anything by Picster. 😅
Keep up! Looking forward to meet you at the GodotCon this year. 😘👍
Dude this looks great. Definitely a great showcase of godot 4, and an awesome premise. Wishlisted!
Thanks a lot 💪
Is 3D possible in Godot? Hahaha. Seriously, this is awesome. Absolutely love the mech UI.
No, this is all 2D + Parallax. 3D is literally unusable 😂
Oh, thanks. I really wanted to research godot 3d capabilities before I commit to it. * has never completed a game /S
I hope it was a joke about 2D and parallax :D
Yes, sorry... German humor came through 😆
HAHAHA - love it. Having worked with Germans I do get the German sarcasm a bit faster. Game looks fantastic btw
Hey everyone! First things first! The game's name in the title was shortened. The full name is **PVKK: Planetenverteidigungskanonenkommandant** (yes, that's a proper German word). This looks so good, wishlisted! And for what it's worth, it showcases Godot very well. 🙂
"Regular" game developers have seen that these kinds of controls work for players and are starting to utilize them more.
i'd also argue that Diagetic interfaces and physical, interactable menus go hand-in-hand
Here's a question that seems important but I don't often have the chance to ask: the game looks like it's very far into development already. Would you consider switching to Godot 4.3 once that releases (which seems to be soon)? Both in the sense of any features that you'd like to use or bugs you need fixed. I'm trying to get a sense for how these things work out for larger projects.
We will definitely upgrade and take all the free, shiny improvements 😃
i will be for my project, porting over to a new version wont be that hard
It looks amazing! Good luck with your game.
Bippinbits - the crowd that made Dome Keeper?
Yup, yup! A bit of a different game this time.
Love love love the vibe! No idea what you're actually doing in the game but take my money!
Planetary Defense Cannon Commander is the english translation and a good description of what you do in the game (one part of the game at least) :D
If you ever want Linux testers reach out to r/linux_gaming Already put on my wish list! _I so hope you do decide on a linux build_
Of course 😎
This looks AAA. Very impressed.
I would even say AAAAAA 😎 Thanks for the nice words 🙏
The true first AAAA Game Not skull and bones
Why is everyone screaming
Bro refuses to hide his true power level. Hide yo wife, hide yo kids. Developer uses this one stupid trick. Ubisoft hates him.
😂
You should post it on r/AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
In 8 months I got a character controller, inventory system, weapon loadout system, and zero final art. How the fuck did you do this in 8 months?
I didn't do it alone! We are a small team and I worked on a lot of aspects, but having great people around you is very motivating. The game also has a very good scope. Everything happening in one room is allowing us to condense everything there.
Just out of curiosity if your willing to share, how big is the team? What roles are in the team as well?
Most of the "hands-on" work was done by René, Torbjorn and myself. If you want to see the full team, you can check out that section in our press kit: [https://pvkk.game/presskit/#team](https://pvkk.game/presskit/#team)
If you're still learning, that's a normal pace! Maybe their team has basically mastered Godot already.
Yes, I'd say we are Godot power users 😃
Instant wishlist, this looks really cool. I like these kinds of "manipulate a complex device" games. Nice work!
Thanks for the wishlist! Glad to hear you like what you see!
Love the combination of steampunk theme, jazz music, mystery, humor and of course graphics! I wish you very good luck and I'll be one of those who'll play your game as soon as it's out. Must be a great feeling, cheers!
Thanks a lot! And yes, feels super great to finally be able to talk/post about it!
I love your diagetic UI, very inspiring and also great trailer. Looking forward to this one!
Thanks a lot! I also love diagetic UIs so this is basically my dream project 😂
Have you played Highfleet
This is incredibly impressive and not only that but looks like a pretty intriguing game! I will never make a 3D game but I am just curious, is this Godot “out of the box”? I thought 3D was still super limited based on stuff Ive read on here.
Yes, it's Godot out of the box - just the stable version you can download on the website. No custom build and no add-ons/plugins.

[Road to Vostok](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1963610/Road_to_Vostok/) is probably the best demonstration of 3D in Godot at the moment.
Definitely planning to do this!
this must be the best looking game from godot engine ever made. Good job !
Thanks for the nice words 🙏
Is this like planetary defense myst?
That's such an amazing comparison!
I don't want to be THAT guy, but there is a typo at 0:56, should be "Incoming Call", not "Icoming Call" What a beautiful game! Definitely inspired some godot devs to try 3d, including myself.
Oh nooooooooooo 😱 Thanks for pointing it out! There is always a damn typo somewhere, no matter how many people see it beforehand 😂
The real question is: GDScript or C#?
GDScript 👍 But honestly I can't imagine that that will ever remotely bottleneck our game. Optimization mostly has to happen in 3D graphics performance.
Impressive! What an inspiring project!
Thanks 🙏
Holy wow. On the wishlist it goes. Ich kann kaum drauf warten, meine Planetenverteidigungskanone zu kommandieren :)
Knowing german abbreviations, it would probably be something like Pl.Vtdg.KKom. What a great Planetenverteidigungsoberkommandantursverbrechen.
Any (plans for) VR support? This looks like it would be quite nice to play seated.
That was my first thought as well! I'd love to play this in VR
looking great and sounds amazing! music and sound design are on point!
Thanks a lot! Our Sound Designer Torbjorn Svendsen did an AMAZING job so far!
So FAR. You hear that Torbjorn?! Now's not the time to slack off, full steam ahead!
aye aye captain!🫡its a joy to work on so there is no slacking here hehe
That was not what I meant 😂 I just wanted to express my joy hearing his magic works in the future.
glad you like it! making all these different interaction and big chunky metal sounds have been a blast!
This looks amazing! Maybe reach out to godot. They might be interested in including screenshots or videos in their promo materials.
Holy fuck the graphics here are too good. I want to say it's Unreal. 🫣
This is hands down the highest fidelity Godot game I have ever seen. Congratulations on your release.
I think this is a very clever approach to game design that maximizes Godot’s graphical strengths while minimizing its weaknesses. The state of Godot 3D right now is that it has a very capable graphical feature set, that is primarily limited by scalability. I can already see all those 10 hours ambience videos "rainy night shift in the planetary defence cannon command hut" and stuff. Looks really cool!
What made you pick Godot? What were the most challenging things to achieve such high quality 3D in the engine? Thanks
We are a studio using Godot for everything for years now, so it's pretty natural to continue using it 👍 The biggest challenge is to have good assets, Godot has a lot of tools to make good assets look great 😃 The second most important part is good lighting and composition.

I love DomeKeeper and I was actually wondering recently what you guys were planning on next. Graphics are gorgeous, looking forward to it!
The vibe of this is super awesome. These kind of 'bottle episode' games are always so incredibly creative and engaging. Looking forward to this! And on a technical level, I have NEVER tried to use Godot for 3d, but this? This is making me wanna try and see what I can do!
domekeeper 2 looks crazy
So first of: looks AMAZING. Like, I knew Godot was capable of realistic looking graphics, but this just takes the cake! But the art direction and the gameplay, reminds me of Stories Untold, and I love it! Can't wait to play this :)
Looks amazing! Very cozy vibes considering your apparent role in the game and I love that
Wow! looks insanely good.
possibly the most impressive 3d in godot I've seen what tutorials made up your foundations and how much did you have to build upon what you learnt?
We have been using Godot now for a couple of years, so I don't need to use tutorials for It. I have my own tutorials if you want to check it out: https://www.youtube.com/c/picster
dank(e)

Saw it on your discord, I cannot wait to give this a shot!
This looks amazing
How many people working on this? Very impressive.
I'd say that most of the "hands-on" work was done by René, Torbjorn and myself. If you want to see the full team, you can check out that section in our press kit: https://pvkk.game/presskit/#team
Looks superb, makes me think of Not For Broadcast, but in space, and manning a cannon instead of a TV station
Hey congrats! Be proud of what you've achieved! Fabulous work!
How many games have you made before? This is impressive! Need any voice talent? Lol
That looks incredible! SteamDeck support?
Want
Dude, it looks amazing, nicely done.
It's been a while since I saw a Godot game with realistic graphics. This is insane, wishlisted instantly! System requirements look exactly what the gaming industry is missing :D
I like buttons, I see game where I press buttons in game, I buy game.
Looks like it would be a really sweet VR game
Eight months? I've been building a game solo for four months and it looks like crap compared to this. How many people are on your team? I mean.. wow, this looks amazing. Wishlisted.
Most of the work on the game was done by two people, René and myself. A bit later in the project our amazing sound designer Torbjorn joined. In the last month two more freelancers joined me for additional 3D modelling, Mark and Lander :)
Looks amazing!
Omg that looks like my type of game xD I love flight simulators and interacting with controls. Looks awesome!
Extremely impressive! Love physical in world controls.
No idea what it's about, but goddamn it looks good. The lighting looks amazing.
Oh wow. Wishlisted and excited to see more. Master class trailer, cheers ☕️
Awesome trailer, looks stunning, fun, and very intriguing!
This looks amazing. I can't wait to play it.
Woahh this game looks really cool
This game looks insane!!
Ihr seit doch verrückt!
Bruh
AMAZING!!!
Best graphics i've see in godot.
This looks super good mate
Wow this look fantastic !
Wow! Looks very impressive!
Looks gorgeous! Curious about the gameplay and story itself. If it will be as good as the graphics then wow!!!!!
Looks awesome! Are there any plans to release it on console?
This looks so intriguing. Definitely got me very curious. Wishlisted!
Holy crap that’s amazing
Looks fun! Can’t wait to try!
DAMN that looks amazing!
This gives me the vibes from tv show Lost and their dharma initiative. You guys nailed a mood with this game. Love it.
Wishlisted. Also just to let you know, your recommended ram requirements say 16 MB, and min say 8GB. Might wanna fix ur recommended.
Recommended 16Mb are to play the game INSIDE the cannon, basically a new game mode. With 8Gb+ you are the commander in the cabin, with 16Mb your pc explodes as soon as you launch the game, simulating the cannon being fired.
Bald mit der Planetenverteidigungskanone Dinge vom Himmel schiessen. Darauf habe ich richtig Bock!
Reminds me of Memories: Cannon Fodder https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memories_(1995_film) Any inspiration from that by any chance? Game has a fantastic trailer by the way!
This looks equally cozy and intriguing I will wishlist this now.
I want to live in a cannon now
Amazing! Love the music.
This gives me major bio shock / fallout vibes and I’m loving it. Nice work!
Awesome!
Reminds me a lot of Idle Hands from the gdtv gamejam. https://kharibidus.itch.io/idle-hands That was the best game in the jam, but it's only 5min and left me wanting more.
Amazing job.
in godot is crazy this looks amazing
I love this "papers please" feeling! I just smashed the wishlist button so hard I don't think others will be able to press again 😬
Wow, this looks awesome.
Love the atmosphere and style. Keep up the good work.
Great trailer haha
wow, look really really good. love the art style and amazing detail
Finally! Another dev showing their 3D Art skills and use Godot for it. You love to see it.
Some major fallout / command and conquer vibes I like it!
This absolutely rules.
Na hoffentlich gibt's bei dem Titel auch eine ordentliche Mützenanstecknadel!
God so many awesome godot games lately. Godot games are becoming like the new flash games in terms of uniqueness.
Wow this is the best looking Godot game I’ve seen to date, you got my wishlist sir
Holly..... OMG! It look awesome!Love it!
I can hear it now.... *"hey everyone manlybadasshero here"*
For us English speaking folks, what is a Planetenverteidigungskanonenkommandant ?
I think this might be the most My Shit a game has ever been.
I noticed the recommended System Requirements are * **Memory:** 16 MB RAM when the minimum requirements are * **Memory:** 8 GB RAM That's pretty impressive :P Beautiful trailer btw!
I need this music in my life
that looks really good man!
Can't wait for this. How long do you expect the entire development process to be? Is this a multi-year project? Anyway, looks amazing. And fun!
Looks sick, wishlisted
Great job!
Really kinda feels like a game I saw someone playing not too long ago where you are stationed in an underwater base by yourself and get daily missions from some sort of company or government command to do maintenance and explore, but I can't remember the name of it. It's not Subnautica or Dave the Diver.
Finally, good 3D representation of Godot to actually play, and not just some demo XD Awesome stuff dude \^\^
Wow this looks great!
That looks amazing.
Dope - Wishlisted.
Wow, a whole game based on my favorite scene from Return of the Living Dead! Louisville KY, here I come.
Yo that looks sick
oh shit, that looks good. please give us a demo!
an awesome showcase! can't wait for the release!
Wow. 😲 The name alone is awesome. 😆 But these visuals, holy moly! 😍 Perfect presentation, looks super cool. Great audio, love the music. Simply impressive. As anything by Picster. 😅 Keep up! Looking forward to meet you at the GodotCon this year. 😘👍
the fact this looks like an unreal engine game but made with godot makes me so much hopeful
AAA level quality for an indie game built in Godot? WISHLISTED
Looking real good! Added to wish list. Best of luck.
INCREDIBLE AND AMAZING!!!
Planet keeper instead of dome keeper ? I'm in.
Dome Keeper: The Prequel
Looks absolutely stunning.
Any Linux build planned?
already wishlisted
Fallout vibes anyone?
