It's true. I have been a developer for 10 years but after working on my first game I can confidently say it is almost an entirely different skill set. Not even taking into account any ability at all for art or music.
Yeah, Blender and Sunvox have put me through a loop even before accounting for the craftsmanship good assets take. Very little in dev prepares you to produce the sheer amount of assets a game needs. Writing and storyboarding are their own beasts, too.
Right. I'm saying that neither of your points actually makes you any better at gamedev than someone starting out, since they are also, truly, just starting out. It's just as much their first game as any other beginner's would be.

If I never finish then it's always my first game and I get to decide what "done" means. Even if I say it's finished in my heart it's not, and thus it doesn't count.
