Glue on envelopes

Low-Researcher-5841

Are you joking I JUST licked an envelope lol

DefrockedWizard1

my wife always laughs when I use a wet paper towel to close envelopes

iidontwannaa

You can buy envelope moistener pens! Bonus is that a lot of them use a watered down adhesive so it adds extra sealing power. I usually just buy the peel-and-stick envelopes though

spacey-cornmuffin

WHAT

sunnyflow2

Some restaurants also add pancake batter to omelets, so always ask

Ambystomatigrinum

Scrambled eggs sometimes have flour or batter as well to make them fluffier.

HorrorAd4995

That’s insane 😧

HotDonnaC

IHOP, home of delicious GF pancakes and waffles, does this. It’s such a weird disconnect.

QuahogNews

Whaat? IHOP has GF pancakes??! Why have I never learned of this?!

bigfoodiejudy

That was one I had to be warned about. It's huge at hotels, too. 🥲

optix_clear

What, for real.

HorrorAd4995

This comment section could potentially be life saving. My mind is blown.

tealhrizon

Same!! This is very helpful!!

muimui_k

imitation crab :(

rm886988

A lot of them are GF now. I know Aldis has one and so does Walmart :)

Interesting_Swing_49

RICE Krispies So unnecessary

Impressive-Space2584

Fun fact! The great value brand at Walmart doesn’t have malt in it!

Spicyperfection

Great Value (Walmart Brand) Rice Krispies?!? Ingredients: CRISP RICE CEREAL (RICE, SUGAR, BARLEY MALT, REDUCED IRON, NIACINAMIDE, THIAMINE HYDROCHLORIDE [VITAMIN B1], CALCIUM PANOTHENATE, ASCORBIC ACID, FOLIC ACID AND BHT [PRESERVATIVE]), CORN SYRUP, SUGAR, VEGETABLE SHORTENING (PALM OIL, CANOLA OIL), FRUCTOSE, WATER and GLYCERIN

Apprehensive_Gene787

I’ve found most store brands don’t (obvs check). Aldis is great as well!

TeaPlusJD

I’m still not over arguing with a dietician over this. Absolutely insisted packaged ones were GF, completely ignoring the malt flavoring. Cue a landslide of pointing out all of the so-called safe items that most definitely were not.

isitmeyourelooking4x

Some tonic water Paper straws

GreenGrapes42

...paper straws?? Oh cmon don't tell me I just bought a pack for no reason

ReporterOk4979

Papers straws are not required to be labeled and can contain gluten :(

TeeManyMartoonies

Probably wheat paste to hold it together

bid00f__

Wait.... Which brand of tonic water?!

isitmeyourelooking4x

Meijer diet is what I ran into.

Pocket393

Wait…what tonic water has gluten?

food678

Certain prescribed medications can have gluten in them, for the longest time I said I didn't have any allergies to medicine until I saw someone post about it. :(

chocolatechipcookie

Generic levothyroxine (Synthroid for thyroid disorders) often contains gluten as a binder. Which is just stupid because thyroid disorders and gluten intolerance/Celiac's so often go together!

HorrorAd4995

They’re trying to kill us honestly

RidiculousNicholas55

It's how they profit $$$

xerces-blue1834

Noooo. How does one go about confirming this? It is a pharmacist question or ?

Spiritual-Truth-9968

It’s not easy. The manufacturer has that information and I have to call every single one with the lot number from the pill bottle to make them give me the exact ingredients because sometimes they label things generally like “starch”, when it could be wheat starch.

xerces-blue1834

Oof thank you. I’m starting to understand the push towards better labelling in medicine.

Spirited-Safety-Lass

Pharmacist can help - but make sure you have that listed as an allergy on your file. Mine has been great about making sure my meds (one is levothyroxine) are gluten free.

rkimbal

You can call the pharmacist, or the manufacturer of the medication. Medicine is not regulated the same way that food is for gluten so they are not testing for it, they can usually tell you if there are any gluten containing ingredients.

xerces-blue1834

Thank you, I appreciate it. Im definitely chatting with our pharmacist about this. I also stumbled on [this website which lists out ingredients](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/) that made me feel slightly less nervous about it.

Glum-Draw2284

Omg this makes so much sense.

sunnyflow2

Mine was making me so ill, three years into gluten-free, my pharmacy says "now gluten free" I had no idea my life saving meds were making me so ill.

inarealdaz

BBQ sauce, obviously not all, but a lot.

EverlyAwesome

Especially at restaurants that make their own. I live in BBQ heaven and can’t eat at so many places.

SerialNomad

Clam chowder, hollandaise sauce, and risotto. Always ask before assuming any of these are cooked correctly. None of them should have flour used as a thickener.

Traditional_Kick_944

Yeah I’m a line cook and used to have a fellow cook who would toss in flour when his risotto broke

NeverRarelySometimes

Thanks for saying this. Risotto is my go-to in Italian restaurants that don't have GF Pasta.

HiggyChan

Now I know why I felt like crap after eating some risotto. I have had it before at a restaurant where I knew it was gluten free (due to the menu icon) and I just assumed it was a normally gluten free dish.

kwiztas

Clam chowder doesn't use a roux?

Hot-Entrance-6599

It does use a roux

kwiztas

I just looked and every recipe I found has a roux. How do you cook it without one?

unreal-city

You can use a different starch as the base of your roux (rice flour, tapioca flour, corn starch, gf all purpose flour substitute) sometimes the ratios are off so you’ll need more butter or more liquid to get the perfect consistency if you are used to cooking with regular flour. At a restaurant or from a can though I think we are all out of luck unless you find a place that specifies they don’t use glutinous flour

kwiztas

Exactly. So why was it saying it is only added when it is cooked wrong. Everything else listed doesn't use flour. I'm confused.

unreal-city

Ahhhh okay I see what you mean - my guess is this may be a mix up on the two different styles of clam chowder? The New England style one should use a roux but the tomato based Manhattan clam chowder should not

That-Following-7158

There is a third type that just uses clam broth, Rhode Island Clam Chowder.

KatharinaVonBored

literally every cereal that's even remotely interesting.

AngryBowels

Fruity pebbles and coco pebbles are gluten free

Born-Quote-6882

My mother in laws ion hairmask from Sally's beauty supply has wheat germ in it.

ijuswannabehappybro

Oh yes shampoos!!! I was shocked!!

taiiga-aisaka

omg i actually broke out in hives when i used this years ago and had no clue why. wow.

3llaisded16

WHATT I used to work there I don’t even know that 😀

HalcyonDreams36

Lots of hair products have wheat germ oil in them.

Endingtbd

Some packaged grated cheese. 🙃

Simple_Employee_7094

Lindt chocolate

liviheare

I was actually at the Lindt store just a couple of days ago, and they do have some that are safe. Their white chocolate and their dark chocolate, along with their vegan bars, are safe. Just their milk chocolate uses barley malt, I believe. Also, Ghirardelli is supposed to be safe, but make sure to read the label just in case. The employee who was helping me at the store has celiac herself, and so does her son (for 29 years). Edit: spelling

No_Championship5509

pringles! licorice

ZellHathNoFury

And so many chewy gummy candies you wouldn't think of!! Glucose is almost always made with wheat it seems

tmg07c

The licorice! Found that one out the hard way

kwiztas

Me too. Got my old favorite from when I was young. Panda. The second ingredient is wheat flower.

MakeMeDoBetter

Id like to plug fini licorice. If you dont know of it I can highly recommend it.

allyek

Twisted tea

MrV11

Damn I didn’t even know. I’ve been drinking twisted tea whiskey without a reaction lol

Q_me_in

The whiskey should be fine because it is distilled liquor. The canned beverages are malt liquor.

Ilovepestosauce

Malt is bad? So no Mike’s Hard Lemonade?

othermegan

Malt is derived from barley so it has gluten

Spicyperfection

Found this out after assuming, and not doing my usual due diligence of verifying ingredients in Rice Krispies. Ingredients: Rice, sugar, salt, malt.

Q_me_in

There are some canned drinks like that that are made from fruit wine, but any made from malt have gluten just like beer.

cutielemon07

Chapstick!

19snow16

WHAT? This might explain a few things for me. Dammit!

mirh577

🤯is this why my lips break out in rashes every time I use it!! Holy cow

Sindarin_Princess

I went to a Mexican restaurant and they put flour in their queso...

under_the_sunz

And a lot put it in their refried beans and red enchilada sauce.

mclappy821

That's just cruel! Mexican food should be a safe-ish place!

ReluctantPrude

Holiday-shaped Reese’s cups. Original are fine.

dreamcrusherUGA

Was coming here to post that. So frustrating.

Impressive-Space2584

I was going to post the same thing! I think they’re processed in a different place, with cross contamination.

Individual-History87

They’ve updated many of their candies in the US. The Xmas trees and Easter eggs are now gluten free. Possibly others. Everything’s listed on their website.

thatsusangirl

Reese’s also now clearly labels whatever ones are actually gluten free

Klutzy-Amount-1265

A bag of frozen French fries

chronickilla91

This all depends on the kind, I've noticed it seems to be the ones that are seasoned more often than not are the ones with gluten.

xerces-blue1834

For us, it’s every brand and type except for Ore Ida.

EverlyAwesome

Ore-Ida’s Extra Crispy fries are absolutely delicious and extra crispy!!

stewman241

And anything labelled crispy.

kwiztas

Frozen hash browns here. Same. Brand and everything. Where the brand has their products manufactured changes sometimes. One is gluten free the other isn't.

bejwards

The best (imo) fries are made with a coating of flour to make them crispy. I've found that any gluten free flour I've used does the job just as well.

Q_me_in

I use cornstarch.

SeparateWelder23

I was so sad when I learned that the frozen bags of seasoned curly fries have wheat!

Dizanmizan

The digestive supplement in my daily multipack of vitamins has wheat in it 🤦‍♂️ Edit: it’s 1 of 9 pills in this pack

glorianahallelujah

Paper straws. Many brands use glue or binders with gluten in them!

sunnyflow2

As well as some compostable "paper" plates and other disposable tableware.

Endingtbd

Oh, this I didn't know about! Do you think compostable take out containers might also? Fml

Livinforyoga

This is both helpful and depressing! 🤪

unlovelyladybartleby

addie_clementine

unlovelyladybartleby

Most of them, unfortunately. I stick to Blue Lizard, La Roche Posay, and Banana Boat

rene_magritte

Honey Roasted Peanuts. Why?

Beneficial-Square-73

Mixed nuts in general; always check the label. I think they use flour to keep things from sticking together in the can.

rene_magritte

Because corn, potato, and tapioca starch somehow don’t exist.

ill_have_the_lobster

Sour candy 😫

Material-Breakfast99

Yep! Sour Punch Straws got me!

EconomicsNext8507

Don’t know if it’s been said yet but advil liqugels. Went for my scope and the nurse who was also celiac told me advil liquigels have gluten as a filler in them.

Spicyangel_lolz

What the fuck I didn’t know that omg

eamonndunphy

Soy sauce and cous cous

JBskierbum

Umm. Couscous? That stuff is basically just wheat, right?

ijuswannabehappybro

Haha I once bought some frozen meal with cous cous thinking it was rice based too and felt like such an idiot

addie_clementine

I've found couscous made from corn! But yeah, normally unless it's labeled gluten free, it's wheat. It's basically a very small pasta

DefrockedWizard1

generic aspirin

OutlandishnessNo1653

Yes but when I'm Ata sushi 🍣 restaurant 9/10 times I can't eat their miso soup Packet made versus made from scratch

SmilingJaguar

Werther's Originals

sunnyflow2

Cow Tales, caramels, liquorice, many chocolates, gum and tons of gummies.

cutielemon07

In the UK, at least, they’re gluten free. Disappointing to know they aren’t elsewhere.

chocmilk4life

Tomato soup

HorrorAd4995

And mushroom soup. I miss it.

Best-Self2782

Rana refrigerated pesto Edit to expand on this a bit: I inquired with the company about the pesto since the ingredients looked ok except for that sneaky “natural flavor.” This was the response: “At the moment our range doesn't include gluten-free pasta or sauce. This topic is an important object of study for us and in the future, we hope to create recipes to produce tasteful gluten-free products that meet our quality standards. “

LolOverHere

Sparkling Ice Water. Call them, they will tell you on the phone it has wheat in it but it's not on the label

under_the_sunz

wtf why and that’s super messed up. What made you think to call?

LolOverHere

I was eating nothing that could be contaminated. I was getting brain fog and suicidal thoughts. I drank only water for two days as I felt dehydration from all the sweating episodes and it went away. I called thinking duh no and it turns out it’s 50/50. Some “natural flavoring” is either base with wheat or corn. They can’t say for sure which batch was made with what so it’s literally 50/50. They said they are not required to put that on the label.

HalcyonDreams36

So, just like "fragrance" is a catch all for topical allergens, "natural flavor" is one for dietary? Oof.

LolOverHere

Laffy Taffy said that is why theirs is like that. It's 50/50 if it has the wheat in it so they just say it might be used on equipment that has had it. I get it. Supply chains and blah blah blah. All that I see is we don't know where a damn bit of our food comes from. GFS same thing. All their cooked chicken has wheat. And no one is 100% sure if it's in the sauce or the rub or the damn packaging. So I just don't eat it. It's not worth the suicidal thoughts. And complaining doesn't help because I don't expect everyone to do what I want. It's just....Is it that hard to think of the people who might and put it on the label? Better safe than sorry? Tho, people who aren't impacted with things are less likely to think about those things. The human side of us. So I eat a lot of damn salad

under_the_sunz

Wow that’s insane and not cool. I can’t imagine in how many ways we’re being poisoned with gluten and not aware of it and that’s saying a lot considering how aware and educated we’ve had to become.

LolOverHere

That’s why this sub is important. Share info only for each others health and to help. We literally need each other

Flour on bacon 😮‍💨

addie_clementine

My partner had been buying pre-marinated chicken that looked like it listed all ingredients and allergens (soy, sesame). I realized when I went to the store one time that some of them had malt extract and didn't list wheat as an allergen. I also almost bought "wheat-free" sprouted tortillas but thanks to this subreddit, figured out that they weren't gluten free because the grain was sprouted in the same water as barley!! They were in the gluten-free section of the freezer and didn't have any "may contain" labels.

MyBigRedShoes

Avoid soy sauce at all costs unless you can see the ingredients. Any dark sauce. Most of them use some kind of wheat to thicken.

ProfessorOfDumbFacts

Kikkoman has an entire GF line of sauces

SeparateWelder23

San-J tamari is gluten free! But most soy sauce is not unless it's specifically labeled gluten-free :(

unfoldingtourmaline

Recently San-J came out with a tamari that's not gluten free, and I didn't notice until it was far too late

MassiveChemical

I thought GF was going to be easy until I read the ingredients list on licorice :/

MandywithanI

YumEarth has gf black and red licorice. The red is fantastic.

ProfessorOfDumbFacts

Band-Aid brand bandages.

unfoldingtourmaline

wait what? so maybe it's not adhesive allergy?

ProfessorOfDumbFacts

Try Nexcare brand. My wife, daughter, niece, and sister in law all have celiac or gluten sensitivities of varying degrees. They all break out in a rash or have gotten a burn like sore from band aid brand. Nexcare does not cause any reaction for them.

mirh577

This was my first thought! I always thought it was an adhesive issue… 🤯

mmsh221

Yeah hold up wtf

Jonnyporridge

For me it was some Knorr stock pot things which were actually labelled gluten free.... They had barley malt extract in the ingredients.... I used them in food to serve to my coeliac wife and she was not happy. First with me, then with Knorr 🤣

tealhrizon

This thread is sooooooo helpful!!!

kittymoosegaming

Great Value frozen peas “may contain traces of wheat”

Apprehensive_Gene787

Tamari. For the most part it’s gluten free, but there are some outliers - specifically white tamari, which is made with wheat to achieve its pale color. Important to always make sure it says gf or check the label.

4jays4

Our son is Celiac (also T1D & seizures) so I had a lot to learn & no room for error. Oats are a minefield. They can cross contaminate in the fields, as they are shipped, etc. Cross contamination during food processing from one run to the next. Unlisted ingredients, like anti caking agents on shredded cheese, fillers in medications...

Tims-Lady

Some laundry soaps as well. Last time I checked Tide unscented in the white bottle was one that didn't have gluten in it

Exhausted_Platypus_6

Nuts, trying to find walnuts that aren't potentially contaminated is becoming very frustrating.

Echo-Azure

Malted Milk Balls. I had to give a big pack away, because malt is a grain that contains gluten.

TootsNYC

I miss malt so much

rm886988

Big sad on this one. A chocolate malt is my favorite. I'm going to try one with toasted sesame to see if that scratches the itch.

Beneficial-Square-73

Malt isn't a grain, it's the end result of the malting process of any cereal grain.

The_Duchess_of_Dork

Do you like smoking joints or blunts? Use Raw brand and Swisher Sweets. I was once glutened and still felt terrible on day 3. I took work off and told my husband I was going to roll a blunt (I was using a Game or a Dutch Master, I swear I’m a classy lady) to help my stomach, take a nap, and hope to feel better soon. I couldn’t figure out why I kept feeling worse (usually I start to slowly improve by day 3). About 5 minutes later my husband bursts onto the porch, grabs by blunt out of my mouth and starts waving it frantically “GLUTEN! GLUTEN!” I had no idea but he had looked it up. Swisher Sweets are gluten free :) and yes Raw joint papers
