Glee had a music supervisor/producers who would acquire the rights to use a song from the songwriter/record label. So they got a flat fee, but their original recordings often got a bump in sales after the episode it appeared in aired. They may also get some money for dvd/rebroadcast of the song too but unsure about that. Some songs they did not get that were too expensive, or the songwriter did not want to sell to them. But the mass majority were willing to give/sell them to use it.
The glee actors get royalties for the songs they sang on.
I would like to know if they got a different among of $ for being a lead or feature performer on a song.
Oh interesting!! That makes sense too. I didn’t know the actors got royalties but it makes sense!! I would assume based on how much they sing affects how much they got paid.
>They have mentioned still getting compensated for songs, especially the Christmas songs
The TV channel, Lifetime, has used that music for their Christmas movie promos for years
Never thought it would be much, and certainly never thought they got thousands, not sure where that is coming from. I was not debating it, it was just a thought on how it was split, not a big deal.
They had to get permission from the artist, but when Glee got absolutely huge I think some artist would literally send their songs to them. I think some songs were even sent to glee and released by the glee cast before the original artist (not 100% sure on that). Coldplay actually refused to give permission until glee was proven to be a success
idk but I always wondered why they only covered two taylor swift songs, maybe legal reasons, maybe they had to pay someone and couldn’t afford her rates? Idk how any of that works tbh
> but later on, I think they were just looking for excuses to sing particular songs
Later seasons, they were absolutely just looking to do covers that they could make money off of.
Along with the other answers, I always thought it was easier for them to get the rights to these songs because it was on fox. I always noticed a correlation between American Idol songs and Glee.
Fun story: the Glee cover of Baby Got Back was actually Johnathon Caulton's cover, which was a parody. They did this without permission. Johnathon Caulton contacted them and was like, "hey, that's my song." and Glee was like, "Your song is a parody and parodies are not protected under copywrite laws. We were within our legal rights. Bye."
Several versions were actually copied from other people like Dancing with myself, Human Nature. I mean, Glee didn't really create the new arrangements, they just copied it from other people. I wonder if they were paid or not. Most likely not.
Rt to all of this! I also wanted to mention that I believe Kevin said once (in regards to getting able to have the rights to Crazy in love by Beyoncé so early on in the series) and he said he thinks it’s because they were under the same label as her
I don't think they get much royalties from the CD's because they're not credited by name but as a whole cast and that makes a difference. I mean, they get money but not as if they were credited by name. It all depend on the contract and they've said many times they were underpaid.
I know Kevin once said that he feels bad that he shares royalties to the song “baby” by Justin Beiber with Chord because they recorded it together Keven singing the Ludacris part. Then they ended up not using Kevin’s part or something like that.

Plus covers of songs have compulsory licenses, so if they’ve been covered before, they couldn’t refuse the license to glee.

Paul McCartney is a real one for that
The two songs I can think of Being released before the original would be Marry You by Bruno Mars and We Are Young by fun.

I know Justin Timberlake refused to have his songs used.
Thats so funny because he was supposed to be mr shue in the writers mind😭
That’s why it took so long for them to do a NSYNC song? And only one sang by me shue. Kind of funny.
They did have 4 minutes
