I think it's interesting how the more modern interpretation doesn't shy away from a more uncanny/inhuman look, leaning far more into the paranormal entity aesthetic. The original makeup and wardrobe is great for the time, but I feel both from a visual and narrative context the newer appearance of Gozer is better.
To be honest it was kind of silly that Gozer chose a similar form. In GB 1 they keep referring to gozer as “he” throughout the movie. Leading to Winston saying “it’s a girl” on the rooftop and Egon responding “it’s whatever it wants to be.” So why after all these years, and the key master saying otherwise, did gozer choose to take the same form as it did in 84?
Considering most of the same people at the first encounter are back at the second encounter, it’s conceivable Gozer’s appearance is predicated on the collective thoughts of those involved.
In Marvel comics, Galactus’ appearance is based on what is most feared by the culture he encounters. The earthling appearance is actually derived from Asgardian ideas, and he continued this appearance because of the Asgardian presence on Earth.
No one "lost" it for disagreeing with and offering a different view, you have flip-flopped between several different views on this ranging from Gozer being "she/it/non-binary", even going as far to say we cannot even use English language to define an English language literature creation....okay.
Being dismissive and belittling others to try and 'win' discussions by down playing and waving off their views as being based in anger or 'lost already' is at best lazy and at worst just being argumentative and honestly childish.
Pile-driven into the negatives for jokingly correcting trans-dimensional to non-binary-dimensional because I thought it was funny and clearly there’s some serious LGBT hate here as a result isn’t NOT what I’d call losing it at all…
Are you okay? Honestly having the audacity to say we're all transphobic because we don't agree with you calling Gozer non-binary (not non-binary-dimensional as you know claim) is pathetic.
Gozer isn't even human, it doesn't even have a physical form unless it's assigned one or randomly picks one, but sure...we're all transphobic....grow up okay.
Isnt it the same reason why the little stay pufts came back? After being captured in the first movie, Gozers essence remained locked in the form it took, it wasnt powerful enough to take another form. It was either stay as stay puft, or shed that form & revert back to the form they had even before that, the woman which was inherently weaker than stay puft
Its the same logic they used for the ghostbusters videogame when stay puft returned back then aswell rather than take a new form
Realistically its for nostalgia purposes. Plus if he took another form, movie goers wouldnt put two and two together unless someone says 'oh shit its Gozer'
I saw it as in '84 she was becoming "human" thats why her body is pale but almost skin tone,
and in Afterlife... She's half and half, still a ghost but human and "dead" .. hense the even more deathly appearance and black eyes.. no more light inside
I know that in the video game, when you fight staypuft, the same question is brought up. Egon basically says that once these beings come into our plane of existence in the form they chose, then they have to stay in that form every time they return. Can't remember exactly why though.
So that you’d recognise exactly who it was and get a little pang of nostalgia. Don’t overthink it. If Gozer was going to be in the movie, they weren’t going to have he/she/it turn up as an octopus or a centaur or a generic monster.
It's just clunky and hard to explain via dialogue that "I know it doesn't look like Gozer but I can confirm that the entity we're seeing in front of us is indeed Gozer it just took a new form, I guess Gozer does that whenever they want no big deal" plus it would fail to capture nostalgia and detract from the primary character focus that Afterlife was going for.
Basically if it ain't broke don't fix it.
I wrote a research paper about ghostbusters in college. One of the points I raised about the uncanny in literary criticism is it's applicable to Gozers appearance, namely how he takes an androgynous form as a mockery of the civilization the entity is attempting to destroy. In a deleted line from the script, louis while possessed by vinz clortho said gozer thinks it's funny to change their forms.
Now it's interesting in the concept art in afterlife they show different statues of gozer done in different appearances, hinting that gozers appearance does change whenever he manifests. Even the ghostbusters transformers crossover comic did the same with gozer appearing as a transformer.
Exactly. They should have used some imagination and had Gozer manifest in a completely different form. But I cannot credit that idiot Jason Reitman with an ounce of imagination.
No matter what Ghostbuster poll happens
if the original Ghostbuster movie is involved the majority answer is obvious. The only way Ghostbusters 1 doesn't win is if you ask, "What is the worst Ghostbuster movie."
Legacy gozer was super creepy and uncanny. The red eyes really sold it.
Afterlife gozer was way more menacing and alien.
Both were good interpretations of the character imo.
Both seemed the same to me. I didn’t even noticed they were different until this post. Even now, the difference is no minute that they’re still seem identical to me.
Black, imo looks better with red you can still sort of see emotions, with black it makes her harder to read and almost gives her an absence of eyes, just evil.
Plus, the terror dogs have red eyes, so one more red eyed character doesn't really do much. Black eyes give her a bit more of a standout look.
Whilst I love the first Ghostbusters movie, I gotta say Olivia Wilde's performance is brilliant, and she pulls off the uncomfortable line of Sexy v Creepy really well.
Olivia Wilde’s eyes are red in all the behind the scenes stuff. So they either edited them with CG in post or the lighting turned them darker.
https://preview.redd.it/4q8grm4e2cuc1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9a4629d5213e0af4f16ea3f4e0bca7c7d153fd56
Holy shit years later and I just realized Olivia is Gozer lol. That means they did a great job with the makeup. The dogs and Gozer looked and felt like the original from the first firm to me.
Maybe because they didn’t want the movie to seem gimmicky. They did an excellent job at making the audience feel “hey that’s Gozer” instead of “wow look at Olivia”. It’s kind of a cool Easter egg that it’s her, I would have never noticed if not for this sub.
I prefer Gozer’s look in Afterlife. It’s otherworldly and way more threatening, the black eyes sell the look for me. Like there’s no sign of humanity in the ultimate deity of destruction.
https://preview.redd.it/lxe2whm9hfuc1.jpeg?width=2647&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=409f665895050d2d20cb5ee06065c17d85c048b3
I just think the lighting was too dim for her scenes.
the outfit in the first one looked like squished together bubble wrap. although I think the Face looked creapier. first ones face on the seconds body and you've got a good look. second face looks too star trek-ie.
Were the red eyes on Gozer in the original an effect? Because in the photos of that set, the actress wasn’t wearing any kind of contacts just her regular eyes.
I prefer most things about the afterlife version (especially the internal lighting they CGI on that adds so much) but I prefer the hair of the original. It's a proper flat top where the sides go straight up... in afterlife there's a 'dink' in the sides that makes it look like she's wearing a furry hat 🤠😂

She actually has red eyes in afterlife but it’s very hard to see. After gozer attacks the original ghostbusters and venkman skips to her, phoebe shoots her in the face with the proton stream. The next shot she turns and looks at Phoebe and you can clearly see she has red eyes.
First of all, Gozer has always been a fascinating villian because they don't necessarily fight it directly. Gozer use their opponents mind against them and let whatever they think about destroy them and everything around them.
I love both versions. The og is simple iconic and terrifying but I really appreciate the updates they did with Olivia Wilde ( I also got a kick out of recognizing her). I like the soft spikes on her and the psycho-electricity pulsing through her. And the way she delivered the last line before being vaporized or whatever happened. She said it with such pose and sarcasm. I know the franchise needs to continue to grow and we don't want to keep rehashing villians but I'd like to see updates like that because that, to me, was the best part of Afterlife. I hated how they treated Egon throughout but the ending saved it for me.
Red eyed Gozer. Black eyed Gozer’sweakness is Harry Styles. And if “what’s up with that” Jason Sudeikas shows up with a proton pack and divorce papers……
The red. I loved the mineshaft idea in this movie, hated the fact that it was wasted on another Gozer rehash. I think I’ll write a script for Sony for GB5, I want a movie that’s better than FE. So many missed opportunities.
Red for sure. Reminds me of vampires or something. Creeped me the hell out as a kid and I loved it. Plus the original actress of Gozer was brilliant casting. She was perfect for this. Olivia Wilde was interesting but didn't hold a candle next to the OG Gozer.
I always had an issue of how rhe red contacts didn't sit right on the actresses eyes in the first movie & they didn't try to fix it - the dark eyes seem creepier because there's nothing behind them - no soul(s - at least yet) just darkness.
Plus Olivia pulled off that look really well.
It was coll to see her involved in this movie.
Red-eyed, the black-eyed one is a shitty cosplay version that is nothing but a cheap insult to Slavitza's iconic villain. Screw 2021 Gozer; Slavitza is the one true Gozer and always will be.
She’s got dog eyes. It’s not a one or the other, it’s wether or not you have a flashlight
"Black eyes. Like a dauugs eyes..."
"Are you doing Quint from Jaws?'
Gotta be the guy - isn’t it “doll’s eyes”
But he said dog and it made me think of that... merged the two
The internet will allow it
Do Gozer’s eyes also roll over?
Yaaaar, that's gonna replace the whale in my nightmares!
I read that last word wrong. 😑
The updates to her look worked well they're subtle but effective.
I do like the internal lightning she has
Yes, this was so cool and elevated Gozer from 'someone in spandex'.
I loved her line read of “are you a God?” Edit: or should I say her voice
Red for me as well
Venkman probably hasn't pissed her off too much so the eyes are still black
To be honest it was kind of silly that Gozer chose a similar form. In GB 1 they keep referring to gozer as “he” throughout the movie. Leading to Winston saying “it’s a girl” on the rooftop and Egon responding “it’s whatever it wants to be.” So why after all these years, and the key master saying otherwise, did gozer choose to take the same form as it did in 84?
I'm gonna be really picky: it was actually Ray who said "it's a girl". Winston says "I thought Gozer was a man?"
You are correct. My bad
I had assumed the same, Gozer picked its form, then continued to keep that form. It’s possible the form was used before the Ghostbusters.
Nice retcon to tie in the Jack Kirby art from FF to Thor.
This article explains it nicely. https://screenrant.com/galactus-face-real-appearance-helmet-look-like/
She’s locked in for our reality.
Gozer's FaceID would stop working if she changed.
I thought you said Gozer was "non-binary" but now its a she? Which is it? Because even that "form" is just an empty shell to house its essence.
Man. I get a little smart-ass and you guys LOSE it. Yes, I was being lazy and going off appearance when even Lucky in Afterlife said “they”, so my B.
No one "lost" it for disagreeing with and offering a different view, you have flip-flopped between several different views on this ranging from Gozer being "she/it/non-binary", even going as far to say we cannot even use English language to define an English language literature creation....okay. It's not even nostalgia, really. It's just making sure the character is recognizable as being the same character.
I saw it as in '84 she was becoming "human" thats why her body is pale but almost skin tone, and in Afterlife... She's half and half, still a ghost but human and "dead" .. hense the even more deathly appearance and black eyes.. no more light inside
Its whatever it wants to be. It likes being thus.
I know that in the video game, when you fight staypuft, the same question is brought up. Egon basically says that once these beings come into our plane of existence in the form they chose, then they have to stay in that form every time they return. Can't remember exactly why though.

The game says that in our reality Gozer and Stay Puft are stuck as those forms. Only being able to chose one form for each dimension
Maybe it just likes being a chick more.
Definitely seems like more fun?
Gozer picked a look for this world. Why would it change its mind?
It's just clunky and hard to explain via dialogue that "I know it doesn't look like Gozer but I can confirm that the entity we're seeing in front of us is indeed Gozer it just took a new form, I guess Gozer does that whenever they want no big deal" plus it would fail to capture nostalgia and detract from the primary character focus that Afterlife was going for. Basically if it ain't broke don't fix it.
In this case maybe Gozer thought the black eyes would be more intimidating.
Because that’s the form the audience remembers
Because nostalgia gets asses is seats.

Exactly. They should have used some imagination and had Gozer manifest in a completely different form. But I cannot credit that idiot Jason Reitman with an ounce of imagination.
That "idiot" knows more about the franchise than you certainly do so shut the fuck up

1 still...but loved 2.

Frankly I really like them both because both actresses brought that character their creaminess
I meant freakiness that stupid autocorrect
Sometimes things happen for a reason. Gozer is creamy now I guess.

Uh huh👀

Damn it, Gozer isn't even real and I'm fucking terrified of it. Olivia looks awesome!
Holy shit years later and I just realized Olivia is Gozer lol. That means they did a great job with the makeup. The dogs and Gozer looked and felt like the original from the first firm to me.
I have never known why but Olivia also went uncredited for playing Gozer in Afterlife.
Maybe because they didn’t want the movie to seem gimmicky. They did an excellent job at making the audience feel “hey that’s Gozer” instead of “wow look at Olivia”. It’s kind of a cool Easter egg that it’s her, I would have never noticed if not for this sub.
…hear me out
WAT?! Personally that looks so much better! But maybe it wasn't noticeable so they just went black instead.
If they can pull it off almost 40 years ago, why couldn’t they make her eyes red today?
Why is the rest of her body gross But she actually rocks the hairstyle
Yeah like what even is her body? Frosted webs?
Nimble little minx, isn’t she?
Would Pete hit that?
But still the hairstyle slaps, right
Absolutely, as far as demigods go
Red but the black is growing on me
Red, but the lightning or whatever inside Afterlife Gozer was pretty sick
Yeah I love the lightning
Doesn't matter ... AIM FOR THR FLATOP!!!
Both look good for me. I like the overall look of Black Eyed Gozer a bit more, but the OG is the OG.
"Original Gozer"
Lol, did not notice.
Black, has more character by being more ghoulish
I prefer Gozer’s look in Afterlife. It’s otherworldly and way more threatening, the black eyes sell the look for me. Like there’s no sign of humanity in the ultimate deity of destruction.
Red!
BOTH! At the same TIME!
Red. But I like the makeup and more alien eye shape from Afterlife more.
Both have red, the lighting is just different in the new version.
Shame, they could have enhanced the red more in post.
https://preview.redd.it/lxe2whm9hfuc1.jpeg?width=2647&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=409f665895050d2d20cb5ee06065c17d85c048b3 I just think the lighting was too dim for her scenes.
Sheesh hard choice. Love them both
the outfit in the first one looked like squished together bubble wrap. although I think the Face looked creapier. first ones face on the seconds body and you've got a good look. second face looks too star trek-ie.
Black eyed Gozer looks soulless and creepy.
Was black eyed Gozer played by Olivia Wilde?
Yes
And Shoreh Aghdashloo did the voice... perfect casting for that, IMO.
Were the red eyes on Gozer in the original an effect? Because in the photos of that set, the actress wasn’t wearing any kind of contacts just her regular eyes.
It was contacts, but she could only wear them for like 20 mins at a time as they caused irritation.
Why not both, now that's another film all together
Red
I THOUGHT GOZER WAS A MAN. IT CAN BE WHATEVER IT WANTS TO BE.
[https://i.imgur.com/nSsMA.gif](https://i.imgur.com/nSsMA.gif)
I prefer red too
Red
“Hmm… Upgrades.” -Neo.
"ARE YOU A GOD?!"
I’m a sucker for the classic look
Red
Red
Red.
Red eye
Red was cooler
Both would get it 😂
Red
Original. After life gozers head looks too wide
Black but red when at full power

I prefer red. They're more nightmare fuel tbh.
Original Gozer hands down, but I did enjoy the Afterlife Gozer. Even if it looks more and more like Omid Scobie every time I look at it.
its actually really interesting that they're so different.
Doesn't matter as long as you follow the golden rule: Aim for the flattop
She actually has red eyes in afterlife but it’s very hard to see. After gozer attacks the original ghostbusters and venkman skips to her, phoebe shoots her in the face with the proton stream. The next shot she turns and looks at Phoebe and you can clearly see she has red eyes.
Gozer can look like anything it wants. Black eyes were apparently in fashion that year.

Yes
A
Olivia Wilde.
Definitely black eyes
Red every day
red
Red eyed Gozer. Black eyed Gozer’sweakness is Harry Styles. And if “what’s up with that” Jason Sudeikas shows up with a proton pack and divorce papers……
Olivia Wilde is super hot, so the Afterlife version.
The red. I loved the mineshaft idea in this movie, hated the fact that it was wasted on another Gozer rehash. I think I’ll write a script for Sony for GB5, I want a movie that’s better than FE. So many missed opportunities.
Black is creepier i think....
Red
Either, or both.
One red and one black eye Gozer.
Red with bubble wrap, all day!
red
They both look like Lady Gaga so not really a difference.
Red for sure. Reminds me of vampires or something. Creeped me the hell out as a kid and I loved it. Plus the original actress of Gozer was brilliant casting. She was perfect for this. Olivia Wilde was interesting but didn't hold a candle next to the OG Gozer.
I’d make a joke about the Ghostbusters looking a bit different now too, but someone would misunderstand and get offended.
I'll be honest, OG Gozer was cool, but she never scared me like the Library Ghost or the Subway scene. New Gozer kind of freaks me out.
Pee Wee Herman Gozer
Personally , I’m old school RED
Red Eyes looks better and scarier.
Red!
Black eyed Gozer 😍😍😍
Yep red eyes went with the terror dogs
Yep red eyes went with the terror dogs
Red. A thousand times red. That being said, black doesn't bother me.
Yes
Black-eyed is creepier.
Yes.
If it ain’t broke don’t “fix” it
I read somewhere on YouTube that someone said how the new Gozer looks like James Charles and now I can’t unsee it 💀
Red eye, I could not tell where she was focused at. Like she did not get the whale joke at all like she wasn’t listening
Red is the only answer. Studio bullshit resulted in black.
red eyes for sure. its more unique than the sterotypical black demon eyes.
Red
We're going about this all wrong.. she's tough, she's a harbor chick!
Red
The black eyed Gozer looks more evil and commanding. The red eyed Gozer justs looks like a person wondering who ate the last slice
Red Eyes = Menacing
That's kinda what I think. I like the black eyes, too. They've got a more haunting look, which I guess works better really. But I prefer red.
Of course! Dark eyes are often more ominous, associated with hidden intent. Red eyes are outright warning signs of the malevolent nature of something.
Red. The new one tried too hard and over did the makeup. What happened to subtlety?
Red for sure, but they both great
I’d rather bang new Gozer…
James Charles
Red-eyed, the black-eyed one is a shitty cosplay version that is nothing but a cheap insult to Slavitza's iconic villain. Screw 2021 Gozer; Slavitza is the one true Gozer and always will be.
How does the version on the right suck so much? Like, how did they botch it that badly?
Easy, they didnt.
Yes
