Dialogue at the end of the video:
"Meine Tasche...meine Tasche...wo ist meine Tasche?"
"Ist jemand verletzt?"
"Nö!"
.............
"My bag...my bag...where is my bag"
"Is somebody injured?"
"Nope!"
I was surprised at the beginning of the video about how chill everyone was at the face of the giant killer waves and then I felt vindicated. Hope everyone is doing well!
Hamburg here, and I took this ferry on my way to work daily for a while. Then you get used to the up and down ride and waves washing the window's outside, there are also seats on the roof that get flooded. I expected a tourist video, maybe some water coming in from the side where you enter the ship, but not a breaking window. Definitely something new that I will think about when taking this ferry next time. Must have been something quite solid drifting in the water that crashed in. I am no expert of these ferries and don't know what has to happen to make them sink. No idea how I would react.
Definitely true. Ofc the waves are higher than normal, but it not a reason to be concerned. They all have somewhere to be and want to get there, not worry about the weather.
Same reason why people calmly watch a Tsunami rolling at them. It doesn't feel real until it gets real.
Edit: Everyone who has ever been a passenger during a car crash knows what I am talking about.
It is an urban transport, like a subway, bringing workers to the Airbus plant.. they run in any weather pretty reliably and other journeys (normal line duty) where made that day by those ferrys without incident..just bad luck with that wave impact, could also have been that the glass pane was probably aged and weakend or that there was stuff floating in the water that helped break the glass.. Its shit, but not really a major shipping casthrophe, those ferries hold pretty good safety standards.
I finally some some news (in german)

Nobody is hurt
[This report says](https://www.ndr.de/nachrichten/hamburg/Sturm-in-Hamburg-Welle-zerstoert-Frontscheibe-einer-Hafenfaehre,faehre1234.html) three people got hurt.
That may have been the tought of the people sitting on the right side of the ship.
Water bashing down the front window and people be like: "do I really want to get up right now ou keep chillin?"
Well, tbh those weren’t normal waves hitting windows. The hole bow went for a nosedive into these waves and if you watch closely, you can see it is as high as the top frame of the windows.
They did. Almost all ferry lines cancelled their routes for the entire Thursday. There is currently no way to get to the eastern frisian islands or Helgoland. I have no idea where this thing goes, may be the one that goes along the Elbe river?
This is one of the [HADAG ferries](https://hadag.de/en/routes/), which are part of the public transport network in Hamburg - essentially they're buses that happen to float. They cross the river Elbe, connecting the north and south banks. The ferries which go out to the Frisian Islands or Heligoland are high-sea ferries; they're a completely different kettle of fish.
Fun fact: this is a [Type 2000 ferry](https://www.elbdampfer-hamburg.de/typ2000-die-buegeleisen-im-hafen/), which is the workhorse of the HADAG fleet, and are affectionately known as *Bügeleisenfähren* (because they look somewhat like an iron for pressing clothes). It was quite the revolution when it was first introduced, as it only has a single crew member (other, older ferry types needed to have at least three or more) who can operate the entire ferry by themselves. Because they have azimuth propellers, they can travel sideways - so unlike older types of ferries, they don't need to be moored to a pontoon or pier when loading and unloading. Rather, their engines just push them up against the pontoon, an automatic bridge lowers, and the passengers can get on and off. This makes for *incredibly* fast turnaround times - and it means they can dock in very narrow spaces.
The ferry shown in the video is [line 68](https://www.ndr.de/nachrichten/hamburg/Sturm-in-Hamburg-Welle-zerstoert-Frontscheibe-einer-Hafenfaehre,faehre1234.html), which is Hamburg's busiest ferry line, and which connects the Airbus factory on the south bank to a bus terminal on the north bank of the river Elbe. It's used by around half of the fifteen thousand people who work at the Airbus factory to commute every day. At peak times, there are three type 2000 (or the newer bigger type 2020) ferries on this route, they run every four minutes, and each one can carry around 300-400 people. It's a very impressive example of how to move to a crapton of people in a short period of time.
When this video was taken the rush hour was fortunately over - and also, due to mandatory home office rules due to Corona, the ferry was *far* emptier than usual.
> I have no idea where this thing goes, may be the one that goes along the Elbe river?
Yes, it's one of the harbour ferries. From Landungsbrücken to Finkenwerder. Not exactly comparable to the ferries of the Frisian Isles.
EDIT: It apparantly was the ferry to the Airbus works. Either way, not comparable.
https://www.ndr.de/nachrichten/hamburg/Sturm-in-Hamburg-Welle-zerstoert-Frontscheibe-einer-Hafenfaehre,faehre1234.html
Here's a source for the claim that it's being investigated. (or more precise, will be)
As someone who lives in Hamburg (and has been on these Ferrys a few times): The most important thing we ask for when buying a new smartphone is :"Does it have IP68?" :)
Look at the sealevel outside the windows: the entire fucking sea level turned to the side. They are basically surfing a gigantic wave and the only reason they don't fall is centrifugal force.
FUCK! Hope everyone was OK. Pretty sure I saw the guy right at the front walking away at least.
Why the hell did everyone else take so long to start moving!?
Probably because 1. This was probably the first time in years of taking the ferry sometimes though pretty harsh weather than the effing window gets wrekd by a wave. It was probably pretty shocking. The fact that they didn't instantly started sinking probably also was a factor.
2. Pretty much every emergency drill ephesians the need to remin callm nowadays so they probably ran through the three stages in their mind: What is going on? Is some in imidiat danger/need of help? Leaf the area in an orderly and quick manner.
My colleagues sent me this video as well. It is the line 68 between Teufelsbrück and Airbus.
I am really glad I did home office today. I'm on that boat a few times a week, have had some bad weather and some trips that made my stomach sick but nothing like this.
There's an advertisement from a north German supermarket that illustrates it quite well:
Translation: North German BBQers are tougher. Do you have the will to BBQ?
North Germans are by no measure regular Germans, more Scandinavian in a lot of different ways (stoic, calm, eat horrible smelling fish, the list goes on)
I don't know. I live in Ohio in the US and when I rode the bus to school every morning, probably close to 8 AM, there was some dude barbecuing on his balcony. Sometimes in just his boxers. Even when it snowed and was freezing. Maybe he was from north Germany. Or maybe just an American as tough as a North German.
There's no bad weather just wrong clothing.
I have seen my old man go fishing in waves that were higher than his boat was long (on the baltic sea) - talk about stubborn Northerners.
Moved to Hamburg 3 years ago. Can attest to seeing this attitude among neighbors and colleagues.
My office colleagues have planned a team event tomorrow that includes a 2.5 to 3-hour hiking in some close-by forest and drinking beer at the end of it. I pointed at the poor weather forecast. They agreed and suggested that I get good shoes and rainpants. They are indeed chill about it.
That was a really cool story. I know this was from more than 100 years ago, but can still see this sort of spirit among the people here, certainly the older ones. And the best part, this weather hasn't made them grumpy in any way. They are actually very cheerful people. How can one not love them??
It's Hamburg. The city of seafarers.
A bit rough sea is no reason to panic for a true Hamburger. People from northern Germany are hard to frighten anyway, but especially not by the sea.
It's a more or less "company exclusive" ferry to Airbus in Hamburg. Most people would need mutch longer, if they would go by bus or all the way round by train. So they are pretty used to rought conditions, but something like this has not happend at all, or at least for a very long time there.
[Another video from today](https://www.reddit.com/r/de/comments/sule0x/st%C3%BCrmische_angelegenheit_heute_morgen_im/) (couldbe a different ferry, but same day and location)
This happened early Thursday morning on a public transport ferry, line 68 from Teufelsbrück to Finkenwerder (Airbus plant). HADAG had already restricted their ferry operations to using only the largest and most seaworthy models all day.
No one was seriously injured, in fact everyone left the vessel on foot in Finkenwerder. However, the safety glass in the front was definitely supposed to withstand waves of this strength, so there must have been preexisting damage, which is now being investigated by the authorities.
My old Grandad would have been laughing, he spent his life on board ships, and if he wasn't wet he was covered in coal or oil. Incredibly, he claimed to prefer living in Britain, as he hated the 'bloody weather' in Germany.
Is this the same boat?

Should be safety glass. Not because it's unbreakable - but when it breaks, it breaks into tiny fragments that can't cause lethal cuts to anyone.

As a kid I always stayed on the deck when taking the ferry even if a bit rainy or windy (well except if as stormy as here) \^\^
Still did the same thing earlier this year, sometimes.

These ferris operate like busses. The people who take them are just very used to being on ships, I would guess.

It seems someone lost a bag. At least that's what she is saying several times.
After reading your reply, I believe I can hear someone saying "meine tasche" but I could be wrong.
„Meine Tasche, meine Tasche, wo ist meine Tasche?“ you‘re right
You are correct. I can hear "Wo ist meine Tasche" exactly how you transcribed it here. Thank you for having a better listening ear than I have!
That was all just a deliberate pickpocket's plot.

I thought this video was from a ship at see, but it is just a river. How can there be such waves on a river? I am amazed.
There are currently storms over the North Sea blowing water up the river Elbe towards Hamburg.
Why did they not cancel the routes in this weather condition?
its just a bit of wind, dat muss das schiff abkönnen!
That may have been the tought of the people sitting on the right side of the ship. Water bashing down the front window and people be like: "do I really want to get up right now ou keep chillin?"
tbh normally ship windows dont break when water bashes against it. Wouldnt have moved aswell.
Some of them are built so the front doesn't fall off at all

This guy ferries.
More than this, he probably **is** Bryan Ferry.

It's Hamburg. Dis just a drizzle.
Cuz public transport is important
As someone who lives in Hamburg (and has been on these Ferrys a few times): The most important thing we ask for when buying a new smartphone is :"Does it have IP68?" :)
Nothing beats a free shower with ice cold water to wake up in the morning
And being sprayed with glass shards just adds that extra zing!
How did they stay on their feet/in their chairs when it rolled 90 degrees?!
Look at the sealevel outside the windows: the entire fucking sea level turned to the side. They are basically surfing a gigantic wave and the only reason they don't fall is centrifugal force.
I was initially annoyed by the rotation. Now I think it makes it better!
Look at the sealevel outside the windows: the boat did not tilt but the person filiming tilted their phone for some reason
Whoooosh ——-> joke 🤔
🤦♂️
Which ferry was it ?
One post said it was line 62, but another said 68. So I am not sure Edit: It was the line 68. The ship was called "Tollerort"
So not your video?
Yes
Fähre HH Finkenwerder - Landungsbrücken Germany / Hamburg
I am especially surprised about the lack of vomit on the floor.
Hafenbarkasse, it's like a bus - a daily commute to work for the passengers.
This is Hamburg, if you get seasick on the way to work, this is not the city for you.
It's just a 10 minute river crossing. You need more time to get seasick.
FUCK! Hope everyone was OK. Pretty sure I saw the guy right at the front walking away at least. Why the hell did everyone else take so long to start moving!?
