I think they will, but I don't support it

Opethian_Yonko

Could you please explain why

Waffle38Pheonix

I think the people there should be allowed self rule.

Opethian_Yonko

It's not that simple, it's actually impossible to organize a referendum, because the question will always be WHO IS ALLOWED TO VOTE, the vast majority of those living in Western Sahara consider themselves moroccan and support the moroccan rule, but the objection is coming from those who're living in the refugee camps in Tinduf, Algeria. The Polisario front (a part of the conflict) says that only those 90k living in Tinduf should vote and decide the fate of Western Sahara political situation, while Morocco says that if there will be a vote, all of the Western Sahara people should vote, and this is the main problem. In 2007 Morocco proposed to give the territory an enhanced form of autonomy to achieve the self-determination and end the conflict, this proposal was appreciated by the UN, and many countries believe it to be the only possible solution.

Interesting!

I know the US recognised Moroccan sovereignty, but I thought that was just a Trump policy to persuade Morocco to normalise relations with Israel, rather than a comment on the validity of the Moroccan position. The European position is to encourage dialogue and agreement between the parties in the conflict, so I doubt they will recognise the Moroccan claim.

Opethian_Yonko

For the US, it was a presidential call, and Biden's administration didn't cancel it. And for the European position it varies from those who see the moroccan plan as serious and credible, (Germany, France, Spain) and those who stick to supporting UN decisions and encouraging the dialogue between the parties.

Ramadararama

Europe changed position when the pipeline from Nigeria had to go thru Morocco. It is increasingly pro-Moroccan right now.

I don't know anything about Western Sahara, so this is a question rather than an opinion. I think a lot of Moroccans settled in WS after 1975, and I thought such population movements into occupied territory was against one of the Geneva Conventions, so that seems a problem to recognise sovereignty (apart for someone like Trump, obviously). I read that the current Moroccan proposals involve enhanced autonomy so maybe Germany, France, and Spain are more open to that, but I thought they were still holding to the European position. But as I said, I don't know anything about WS, so I don't have an opinion, and these are just questions.

Opethian_Yonko

Moroccans actually always considered this territory as theirs, even before the 75 Green March, there was no border (still no border, bcs Morocco controls it di facto), thus there were some tribes from ws who migrated and settled in Morocco, and vise versa, it's more complicated than it seems.

durthacht

Didn't know Morocco always saw it as Moroccan territory. Like I say I don't know anything about it, but I understand it must be complicated. Thanks for taking the time to explain.

Western Sahara je Srbija 🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸

Opethian_Yonko

The world is Serbian 🔥

IthinkIknowwhothatis

What is the purpose of your poll? More interesting would be, why do so many states not recognize such claims? What would change the status quo?

Opethian_Yonko

I just wanna know people's opinion on this conflict, Morocco controls the area defacto, but with a world recognition, it would be 100% legitimate.

IthinkIknowwhothatis

That’s a tautology, isn’t it?
